Everytime my wickedness gets the best of me, I turn to this Awe-Inspiring scene for redemption. Lord Jesus, You Are Truly the Son of God. Help me change my ways, a mere mortal not worthy of Your Presence. I ask that You rid me of my demons so I can be with You Forever and Ever Life Everlasting. Amen.
Yes this helps us to remember our impressive Lord. The maker of the heavens and the earth. The one who makes life and takes it away. The Supreme God! No one can compare!
Long ago in the darkest hours of my life I ask God to help me and he heard my prayers. God knows when you are ready for him to help you. Thank you God .amen
Totally awesome!!! The Creator came to this world to save the lost, healed the sick, cast out Devils!!! What a awesome God we serve!!!!! Repent My People, for the kingdom of God is near
When he called the four winds it was so majestic it was almost like I was actually witnessing it for real. I love this movie and Max Von Sydow did the best rendition of Jesus ever depicted in my opinion.
*"The Messiah has come, a man was dead and now he lives!* *I was crippled and now I walk!* *I was blind and now I see!* *Who has done these?* *The man called Jesus!!!"* ⛪🕍🙏
Ever since I was a little girl, this scene struck me powerfully. When I grew old enough to understand it better, it made me cry every time- to have it so silent, so dramatic, then to slowly bring in the Hallelujah Chorus (what has long been my favorite Easter song) leaves such an impact, it leaves me shaken- fantastic directing and use of Händel's Messiah - it's just...perfection. It has become tradition for me to watch this scene especially for Easter. Thank you for posting this and sharing! :)
Upon its release, it was proclaimed uneven, an "a noble failure" by film critics but personally I maintain that George Steven's epic work is one of the most inspirational accounts of the life of Christ ever filmed. And one of the most inspirational film scores by Alfred Newman ever written.
A great scene...from Jesus' humility in praying to His Father to the reactions of the people--not believing their eyes, then, almost reeling in horror .

In the Scriptures, it is not being religious, it is simply believing Him with your entire being that He is who he claimed to be and then one day he will call you from the grave never to die again! Believe him and at that moment you will belong to him forever!!
You need not be religious. Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. That He died for your sins and rose again and you WILL be saved.
no matter if you are religious or not, you can still appreciate Max Von Syndow's brilliant performance as Christ. this is my favorite religious movie :)
Best depiction of the life of Jesus !!! BUT, Max Von Sydow was too "groomed", no full beard, hair not long enough, etc. Love John the Baptist (C. Heston), Pontius Pilate (T. Savalas), and exc. disciples !! Jamie Farr esp. being Lebanese !!!
Jesus lives! Halleluja! I love this scene since I was a child, enjoying so much Haendels "Halleluja", which he wrote right after his recovery from death, still in deep despair but although full of hope und pleasance. Stefan Zweig described this scene in detail in his novel "Sternstunden der Menschheit".
brucefan26 Jesus is also angry at them as well. There was and is so much going on spiritually at that point in time. Honestly it’s incredibly amazing what God will do to speak to us. Our Lord is completely in all of His words and deeds.
it always hurts me the way they speak to Jesus..I hate it. It was not His job to raise everyone from the dead..their words and tone are So full of contempt and accusation..but Yes watching Jesus raise Lazarus is magnificent!! Scholars say His late arrival was intentional so that He could raise him from the dead.

Best scene in the film!!! Worth watching over and over again. Outstanding music score and outstanding crowd reactions especially Sal Mineo's character Uriah ( " I was cripple, and now I walk!!! " ) LOL at Judas as he takes a second glance at the ex-blind old man Thank you for posting (-:
Van Heflin was beyond extraordinary in this film and specially on this scene. The triptych formula made between him and the blind man with Judas looking in their opposite was very impressive, as much of the great photography throughout this film of the 1960s
Some comments on the music. The early part of the score by Alfred Newman, one of my favorites, was lifted almost note for note from one of Newman's other scores, "The Robe." The music which accompanied scenes of Van Heflin, Sal Mineo and Gary Raymond was the music used when Victor Mature gazed on Jesus as He died. Also, Newman vehemently objected to the use of Handel's "Messiah," but George Stevens insisted on using it.
Yes, the first part is from The Robe; the second part is Newman's own new contribution of his "Hallelujah", also found on the original soundtrack album track, "The Great Journey"; the final part of course is the Handel.
HE WEPT,he knew the people of this earth, his creation, were worthy of salvation, doing the will of the father,he empowered the son,to raise LAZARUS,to glorify the father, this movie shows mortal man how to be saved,no one gets to father but by him, thank you lord for your tender mercies
I've never been the religious type, but i am making more of an effort this Easter. My grandma always watched this film at Easter time. Such an awe inspiring scene ✝️
WOW Bethany seems to be in close distance to Jerusalem in this movie, they just ran there without getting tired. Even Old Aram was able to make that journey. This is the best cinematic portrayal of Jesus' fame spreading and shows how Jesus built up a crowd especially after raising Lazarus. Definitely a powerful scene to end the first half of the movie with. This is perhaps one of the most reverent portrayals of Jesus out there and one of the few that gives Jesus short hair.
Though I prefer King of Kings 1961. This scene is the reason Von Sydow I like better as Jesus, this moment is the most powerfull scene I have ever seen!!! No words, little music, and his face convays everything. It sends a chill down my spine.
John 11:4 When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” John 11:14-15 So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” Thank you Lord for your glorious miracles. He knew we needed to witness the greatest of all miracles. Without Him there is no life, with Him there is life everlasting, all we have to do is believe in Jesus, Glory Hallelujah.
Such a beautiful scene from a great film. I would love to see this scene with the original Alfred Newman score, which is available on CD. Newman was so disappointed. George Stevens used cues from Newman's 'The Robe' and Handel's Messiah.
I saw this film when I was seven. Lot of water has passed under the bridge. This scene STILL sits deeply as one of the greatest retellings of a bible story. The MUSIC ... if I coud play it on an instrument i would, each an every day. It truly brings wings to the regal liftoff. I hope this movie will be released in some way shape or form.
Saw this when I was a kid in its Cinerama premier, found it intriguing. For clarification re: the soundtrack in this scene: George Stevens insisted that Alfred Newman re-use his crucifixion music from The Robe for the build-up to Lazarus exiting the tomb. After that point, Newman had written a glorious "Hallelujah" to finish the scene and lead to the intermission. However, Stevens then insisted that Newman's Hallelujah be replaced completely with Handel's Messiah. Later on, Stevens then decided to re-instate PART of Newman's Hallelujah. It is the "filling" in the musical sandwich between The Robe music and the Handel chorus. Newman's Hallelujah is identical to a theme that he wrote that appears in the first part of the film, titled on the original vinyl soundtrack album as The Great Journey. This has some resemblance to Franz Waxman's main theme for Demetrius and the Gladiators, but it is actually quite original and idenpendent. You can listen to Newman's new, original Hallelujah written specifically for this film on the two-disc soundtrack album, where it correctly appears for the Lazarus scene - and, in a "quieter" rendition for Jesus's own resurrection scene. Both versions are simply grand. It is a pity that Stevens hired the venerable Newman but then so callously trimmed down his powerful original film score.
