Dear Friend: this scene suffers from being edited perhaps even heavily edited. It is not what the audience saw when first this film appeared in theaters. The character of Jesus Christ who is portrayed by Max Von Sydow shows a prayer unto the heavens and commands in a manner of speaking "come from the four winds oh breath and breathe upon this man so that he may live" There is also this that was edited out "You wound, and you make alive" who is like thee oh Lord". There is in a manner of speaking a degree of continuity that has been edited out. I would not refer to what we are looking at here as masterful. There is indeed more to suggest however this is a motion picture.

This is one of my all time favorite Biblical epics. It's hated by many critics, but I personally think it's a masterpiece. It's one of the relatively few Bible movies that actually sticks close to The Bible, which is partly the reason why I love it so much. In about 10 or 11 years, I have seen it 7-8 times. Fun story that I want to share: I must have been 11 (so this is circa 2009) when I first saw it. I went to a flea market with my Mom and one guy had a whole section of VHS tapes. The Greatest Story Ever Told was one of them. I love old movies and the title intrigued me, as did the run-time of over 3 hours. And it was Rated G, and as a sheltered child, I could only see certain kid movies and I was only allowed to see a handful of PG-13 movies. My Mom let me buy it, and as I was paying for it, the man was telling me how good of a movie it was and a man next to him made a comment about John Wayne's line. (Something like "John Wayne is in it and he only has one line- Truly this man is the Son of God.") I somehow missed what the plot was from that. So my Mom and I went to the car, and she was putting my sister in the car (she had disabilities), and I read the plot on the back and went: "MOM! I read the back of the cover and guess what? This is a movie about Jesus!" This impressed her as well. :) I could say so much more about this movie, but in short I just absolutely adore it. What a beautiful movie about the Gospel! :)
Cinematography is beautiful. Captures perhaps the most pivotal moment in Jesus's ministry. Raising a man from the dead. Which of course renders his own resurrection moot. That's because Jesus did not raise from the dead. He didn't have to.
This scene has always given me chills. Truly a masterful work of art. And it's bittersweet to watch this first Easter since Max von Sydow passed. Actors of his caliber are few and far between.

Commanding and moving performance by Max von sydow. Also a great supporting cast.Hope they show some of these films at easter. Now that would be a miracle !
A great moment in a great film. The nexus of Christian's faith runs like a coursing river through the story of the Resurrection of Lazarus. "Lazarus, Come Forth!" and moments later, dressed in the raiments of the grave a grey-shrouded form is seen, briefly, making its way toward the exit of the crypt. Jesus triumphs over death through His faith as He petitions His Father, our Father, Almighty God, to mitigate nature in bringing Lazarus back to his family.
Yes he defeated death for all of us all we hsve to do is believe and tske hold of his promise somedsy soon he will put an end to sicknesd and death thank u Jesud
The music is so wonderful, too. The initial swell gives a sense of terror, and awe. You feel as if the entire world has just been changed, the fear of the unknown. Is he the devil? Is he evil? Then it is Lazarus. Alive in body and spirit. The music at once shifts to a sense of triumph, surging like water breaking a dam. It shatters the grip of fear and buoys your heart up to the heights of joy. Wonderful music.
If I had witnessed something like that I would be screaming to the top of my lungs I wouldn't be able to control myself for joy and of absolute thrill of knowing god almighty, then I would have passed out from Fear of this very same God. What a wonderful God we are so privileged to have and know

A very powerful example of our human nature. It demonstrates how weak we truly are in ourselves and our understanding of God. It is easy to trust God when all things are working well, but when God delays what He says He will do we lose faith in Him. We do not know why He works the way He works, but if we will trust Him, according to what He says He will do, then we know we can rely on Him. The promises found in the Bible are based on the Nature of God's character. He is our rock, our fortress, our help when we need Him. But we must totally trust Him even when it seems He is no where to be found.
This film was unfairly maligned. (Never mind John Wayne!). True, it was stately and often moved at a snail’s pace, but there were scenes of great power and beauty. The raising of Lazarus combined with the music and the expressions on peoples’ faces is awesome. And nothing in the scenic values made it look like a typical Hollywood biblical romp
5:09 I find this sequence fascinating, and I like the way George Stevens handled it. To show the raising of Lazarus of the dead through the reactions of the people witnessing it, combined with the haunting music, make for a VERY powerful scene. Though I am a Christian, to witness a miracle of this nature would be extremely profound, and beyond what the human mind and heart can completely grasp. If I saw it happen, it would frighten the wits out of me. Anyone feel the same way?
It's too bad that clueless editors didn't realise what Stevens was doing and eviscerated this scene. In the original version it's a long, slow buildup of Lazarus coming down the hill with the reactions of everyone, whereas here, you can see he just sort of appears. I hope we can see the original version one day.
Absolute best version. The others are nervous, unfocused, and baldly melodramatic, with lots of running around ala "The Life of Brian". The arc of Stevens' first act ends here, book ended by the resurrection and ascension which closes the film's second and final act. I just realized why it's structured this way. Jesus' followers are looking for a sign of his divinity, and this is Stevens' proof, though David Mc Callum's Judas Iscariot doesn't believe it. -- Michael McDonagh on George Stevens
Amen. I struggled tonight as I was going to buy cider to drink and I had a battle with myself on the sidewalk as I wanted to go buy the booze but the holy spirit told me to walk the other way home, it was such a struggle but now I feel cleaner and better since listening to the holy spirit. I am an ex fentanyl addict so I have to be careful with my sin and with booze lest I go back to the needle. I almost died many times when I was in the city but I have been sober now for about 11 months. Jesus is all the credit. Sometimes I get sad at how I sinned so much but the bible says if we repent as far as east is from west thats how far god forgets are sins. I cant believe how good and loving God is. I was in chains and now I am free.
I am so happy to see that there are so many other people who see scene like I do, more importantly its so wonderful to see so many praising the living Jesus here too.
Interesting how this scene is less concerned with the act (which is seen from a great distance) than with the subsequent reaction of the crowd. Van Heflin and Sal Mineo rushing excitedly to tell everyone what they saw really propels the moment forward.
4:17 My God I cry every time.. Their doubt in Him but His love for us!! He teared up maybe because He knew this was the miracle that would lead to His death to prove to them because they lacked faith..😩💔!! Idk but my God!!And again the fact the camera never panned in but based it off everyone else's reactions when Lazarus was raised instead, the music is everything!! This is perfect!! 💔🙏🏾🙌🏽😭

This scene.. Man this scene. I watched this as a child and never grasped the magnitude of this scene or this mark in mankind's history thru the Life of Christ. The tears that weld up in Jesus eyes as He knew that this act would be his final before He would be betrayed and killed for our sins. The whisper of Lazarus name then the demand and authority behind His cry for Lazarus to come forth! Man oh man then the scene doesn't zoom on Lazarus but the expression of the many witnesses giving testimony through their faces and reactions!! Man PRAISE THE LORD!!!!!
i think there was no way for them to really do the subject justice, by not focusing on him emerging from the tomb , it leaves people to think and call up their own imagery and thoughts that they'd relate with better.
This movie played a major role in my becoming a believer... so much to say positive about this movie... every time I see this scene and hear the song, tears flow... involuntarily... awesome movie, awesome scene... May He reign forever
Lesson learnt. Simple question "Do you believe" Blessed are those who are yet to see but believe. Yes l Believe my Lord, please strengthen my Faith in Thee. With you all things are possible. Ask and you shall receive "God Added". Thank you Andrew, God bless you!
Of all the movies I've ever seen about the life of Jesus, I think this is my favorite. There's something "off-beat" about it, in a good way. Von Sydow's Jesus is so very human, and His personality engaging and friendly and winning on a level that most film versions of Christ's just aren't. This is a Jesus Whom you could see walking up to you, smiling in a friendly, down-to-earth sort of way, holding out His hand to you, and saying, "Hello. I'm Jesus. Pleased to meet you!" And the writing is so much better than in most such films; the stories in the Gospels are fleshed out and expanded into actual human interactions with dialog and characterizations that are true to the text, but longer and more complex than just anecdotes told in a paragraph or two. And you can't beat the score! The way this clip ends is a good example of the kind of exclamation point you keep running into whenever something especially significant happens in this film. When this movie was made it became a sort of status symbol among Hollywood stars, of all things, to have a bit part in it. I will never forget John Wayne as the centurion on Calvary or Sidney Portier as Simon of Cyrene. All through the movie, familiar faces keep popping up in minor roles in a way that adds something on yet another level. It's like everybody wanted to have a small part in the telling of The Greatest Story Ever Told.
I have watched this movie at least 100 times or more over the past 60 years. And, think it's probably the most beautiful telling of Christ. But, in the entire movie, this scene is the most powerful, emotional scene. It starts with Martha's emotional outburst, but really chokes me up when Sal Mineo's facial expression changes as he slowly steps backward. This scene always makes me cry. And, the wailing in the background blends it all together in a way that no one has been able to do since. "The Greatest Story Ever Told" is truly a cinematic masterpiece.
One of the greatest scenes ever filmed. Masterful.

Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior is on the throne for ever and ever!
Thank you for sharing this. So powerful, it gets me every time. 🙏
Words don't do this scene Justice, it is Wonderful, " a Man was dead and now he Lives, I was a cripple, but now I walk. I was blind and now I see"
Beautiful movie from start to finish!! One of my favorite classic movies!! Beautifully moving. ✝️❤️
I am so happy to see that there are so many other people who see scene like I do, more importantly its so wonderful to see so many praising the living Jesus here too.
My body is tingling, Jesus I love and adore you
We love you LORD because YOU first loved us!!!!!
AMEN!!
We hold fast on you, because YOU HELD US FIRST!
Amen. I'm in!!!
AMEN always and forever!!!
RIP Max Von Sydow. You were a mighty actor ❤
I love this, I can watch thousands of time and I still cry.
He looks into her eyes with conviction and empathy, with love and pain because he came to serve and asked only for our love. Beautifully acted.
Lazarus ,come forth....same voice as
Let there be light.and there was light.
Punaruthanavum jeevanum njanakunnu amen
And the same voice that will raise all the dead on the Last Day :)
This movie reminded me of what it was like in those days.
I love this story!! God is wonderful!
Lord Jesus Christ has set me free for all eternity. I will love, adore, honor, and praise Him forever and ever amen.

Thank GOD. for hi great mercy, and broad grace. Amen.
Beautiful, and inspiring. Thx
Powerful!
By focusing the camera on the people rather than Lazarus when he is resurrected, a moment was stolen from the viewers to also be in awe.
i think there was no way for them to really do the subject justice, by not focusing on him emerging from the tomb , it leaves people to think and call up their own imagery and thoughts that they'd relate with better.
But the faces of the onlookers left nothing to the imagination. One after the next. It was perfect.
Amen! I cry every time I see this movie!
This movie played a major role in my becoming a believer... so much to say positive about this movie... every time I see this scene and hear the song, tears flow... involuntarily... awesome movie, awesome scene... May He reign forever
Thank you for such a blessed video.
Lord bless you give me strength and courage to overcome grace also praises to thee
I'm Jesus. Pleased to meet you!"
And the writing is so much better than in most such films; the stories in the Gospels are fleshed out and expanded into actual human interactions with dialog and characterizations that are true to the text, but longer and more complex than just anecdotes told in a paragraph or two.
Handel’s music fits this scene very well
So wonderful is our king Jesus who is reigning as king in heaven ....
