  • This is an instructional video that is the first in a series of videos on the Roland VS1880 digital recorder. I'm starting this series to help my brother quickly figure out the functions of the VS1880. We are starting with setting the VS1880 for recording. There is a continuation of this video call "Digital Recording 1-2" that is the actual recording and how to undo a bad recording.

Sorry for the late reply I'm not looking at this much lately. The -12 is highlighted because you should be at least up to that level for the inputs. Best is inbetween -12 and -4.

Is that a dr5 beside unit?
Tip to take 2 tr drums to multi.
    to maximize bit depth ratio.
Take drum song/patterns turn all seq instruments
down except kick. Set recorder push play on seq.
Manually turn down kick turn up snare and do the same with
all percussion etc. It's best to launch each part by ear and
timing than midi. This gives the drums max volume per
track and resolution. A 5 min 2 tr will take about 30 min as you
re record the tracks but it'll sound so much better.

    Hi Joe,
There are adapters that go from XLR to 1/4 inch jack. that might be a way to go. they should be at most music stores. I got mine at Starving Musician.

Hey Nolan, Thanks for the tutorials, good stuff! I have the VS 1680 and can't seem to figure out what I have to do to record my tracks to CD Burner, any ideas?

    • @nolanreilly
      @nolanreilly  8 років тому +1

Sorry for the late response, I only look at this account when I post a new video. If you haven't figured it out by now, there are a few stand alone CD burners that are compatible to the Rolands, but I went and got the recommended on that connects by a 50 pin connector call the Que 525 CD burner. you could also go out the main outputs on the back into a regular CD burner. The advantage of the Que 525 is that you can back up your songs on data CDs.

@BASHINGTHEWORLD Do you have a sound card on your computer that has RCA output. If so get an RCA to Standard 1/4" jack and connect them to input channel 3 and 4. Make sure that you also hook up the computer and the VS1880 by MIDI so that you can keep the timing right. If you want to separate tracks this will be important as you will have to play them one by one.

    Peace be to you,
I use a Yamaha aw2400 with Waves module ygdai y96k.
Yrs ago during 2000's used Akai DPS 12 with ebm2.
The Akai was chosen for delta sigma algorithm 32 bit floating point
I refused the compression based recorders.
Does this do waves non compressed?

although on the jack the one I have goes from 1/4 inch female to XLR male and you would need the other way around.

Would this Mixer function as a "DAW" control surface; can it interfase into a PC, and be recognized with a DAW software running on Win 7?

I've had the machine for about 2 years now and have so many ideas that i want to record but every time i do what you did at the back of the unit nothing happens. in the box came....
    1. the unit
    2. the user manual
3.a lead with a plug at the end
    4. a quick start guide
    5. bubble wrap

Hello, if you are facing the 1880 from the front. In the back on the right of the screen (at least on the 1880) there is a square black button. You just push that button. If you are looking at the back of the recorder, you will see that it is or should be marked.

I recently acquired a VS 1680. Quite new to this. The internal Disk came with that was bustard so I tried two IDE laptop 2.5 HDDs (one after the other) fits perfectly but after boot up there is an error message " IDE UnFormat 8.4GB " Please help me to solve this. Thanks you!

    • @nolanreilly
      @nolanreilly  6 років тому

There are only certain internal HD that will work, you should be able to search the internet/google for compatible HDs and I believe they have to be 10 gig or less in multiples of 2, each 2 gigabytes of memory is partitioned into a drive. I have a 10 gig drive that has 5 partitions.

@bonusbmusic So 17 & 18 are mix down tracks. When you use the mastering room the default is to mix down on 17 & 18 vTrack 15 or something like that. You can have multiple mix downs by switching you vTracks in the mastering room (CD-RW then F1). You can record on 17 & 18 vTrack 1, but you can not include them in the mix down.

I totally can understand why you went from 49K views from Part 1 to 5K to Part 2.......you talk in tech-speak....assuming everyone has the same level of recording expertise as you.....this is not what you do on a part 1 tutorial....I had no idea what you were saying 95% of the time.......sorry.....this was terrible.....

    • @nolanreilly

Because the video was for my brother who knows a little. It is not a tutorial on how to record music, it is how to record on a digital recorder. Sorry it did not fit your needs.
