  • Swapped out the HDD with an SSD. This time I did quick format and no surface scan. THis takes way less time. I was done in less than 5 minutes. All is working well.
I also unplugged the fan and changed the battery.

About the fan: Earlier this year I've mounted a little switch on the back of the VS 2480 between one wire connected to the fan, and I also build a blinking-led in the front of the case, so now I can see that the fan is switched off, when you record with a mike close to the machine it's better to switch it off because of the noise from the fan, on the other hand the fan blows the heat out.. so, in my opinion it's better to have the option to switch it on again after recording. BEWARE! Ian's excellent suggestions do NOT work on the VS2480 IF you have an early operating system (OS). Ian UPDATED to 2.50 (see the screen) but the original VS2480 is 1.105, and so on. This older OS has glitches with SSD,CF, and SCSI2SD, AND is limited to 40GB. I have NOT found *any* combo of new hardware/memory that works on the older OS systems, beside a IDE HD. IF someone has a fix on using the older OS's, then kindly let us know.

Hi chip I am curious if you have any resources or suggestions for me regarding my VS1680. I have been trying to update the OS from the old installed version 1, because I have a new solid state updated hard drive unit. I no longer have the SCSI cd player and those things are so antiquated that every time I purchase one, it's already dead. So I bought the MIDI Sport usb/midi interface, but now the Roland SMF player fails to open the folder/files. At my wits end. Nobody wants to touch these old units or they want to charge more than it's worth

@@kennethenos2716 I updated my O.S. on my VS1680 (back in 1999) by Midi transfer. I downloaded the update files (for V-Xpanded 1680) , which came in about 20 packets, (ie seperate files) & then just sent the files from usb to midi directly into the VS1680. It took a long time but worked without issues. Dont ask me anything, as I dont remember any more details other than, downloaded the O.S. & updates from Roland & sent them as Midifiles into the Midi in port on the VS1680. I hope this helps.

@@emeraldphoenix9229 thanks man I already fixed the problem apparently I had failed to extract the zip file, or it became corrupted so I re download the Roland file, extracted, then burned it all into the new drive slowly and carefully

Thanks for this, I might be buying one of theses soon and will definitely want to do this mod! ... I have a Roland-MC-909 Groovebox that was also released in 2002, like the VS-2480. I think this was an interesting time because the industry was trending toward computer and software, but these boxes by Roland were sort of a dying breed of boxes that could "do-it-all' with the latest tech that was not software. I'm pretty amazed by what the MC-909 can do. In my search for the perfect "studio mixer" for all of my synths - I've started to get really intrigued by this VS-2480. I'm just now trying to wrap my head around this thing. Since you are helpful enough to make this video resource for us, I'm hoping to ask a couple questions. 1) Can this be used purely as a mixer? I would like to be able to patch my synths into this, add the internal fx and processing, use the multiple outs into my audio interface and record the processed audio into my DAW. I will also record into the 2480 but I'm wondering if I can also still use this purely as a mixer with FX and multiple outs? 2) If I add the 3rd party VS FX, such as the UAD eq's and compressors... can those be added to every single track/input at a time? Also, are the UAD parameters controlled via the dedicated EQ and COMPRESSOR knobs above the faders? I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have UAD EQ and COMP on all of my connected synths with dedicated hardware control. Thank you so much if you find the time to reply. I might be buying one of these very soon!

Matt Play it can be a standalone mixer. the 3rd party fx can be used at input. The knobs can control fx parameters.

I've installed an HP SSD S700 2.5" drive in my VS-2480 and it has done absolutely nothing for the last 2 hours. It's still on the V-Studio screen with the version being displayed. Is there something else you had to do before you made it to the format screen or was there a time period before you got to that screen to format the disk?

Hi, I got a Roland VS 2480. When I turn it on, it says “Sub System No Response”. Is it possible to fix it or is it dead? Do you have experience with this? Thank you

      1) look up resetting the machine. If that doesn't work 2) Change all of the capacitors on the circuit board and reset the machine (cost US $600) if that doesn't work 3) remove the OS and Reflash the units OS with the latest version. I can say no more. and the details for doing these things are online or you can contact a recommended Roland Servicing company for assistance. Or just buy another unit. These units were great, they are old, and breaking down - move on.

Hi, I own an orginal 2480 with the drive caddy at the front right.
Would this mod work on my machine?
Could you please give me a link to buy the card and the drive you used please, I hear a lot of them don't work.

My machine currently has no internal hard drive and I need to get one (Or IDE/SATA adapter and SSD). I think my 2480 is the first version because it doesn't have an internal CD/DVD drive, but does have an open hard drive bay in the front of the unit. However, it's missing the drive caddy that plugs into it. Once I find and replace the drive caddy (the little plastic black case containing the HDD that plugs into the bay), can I just slide the drive caddy into the bay opening and plug it in directly (once a HDD or SSD is installed into the caddy of course) without having to flip the whole 2480 over and opening the bottom of it?
