- Song Dedicated to Mitch Jayne. Mitch Jayne left us to be with our heavenly father on August 2, 2010. Mitch was a original Darlin boy on Andy Griffith show and bass player in the Dillards. As Maggie Peterson aka Charlene said he was the good looking one.

Mitch Jayne and Rodney Dillard wrote this song and is a bluegrass favorite where ever it is played or by any bluegrass band. Mitch will be missed by all, but there will be a time that we will all see and hear him again.
Maggie Peterson Mancuso passed away last night. Her path is new... the world is free. Thank you for the many, many smiles. I will always watch TAGS.

I loved The Dillards when I came of age in the '60s. So sad they've all walked on except for Rodney. But his voice is as clear as it ever was - and this song I hear in my mind's ear with increasing frequency, these days. ♥🎵♥

We are the biggest Andy Griffith fans,but our favorite episodes were when the Darlings were on! We love the Dillards, and especially the mandolin player from our hometowm,Bakersville N. C.

Oh My Goodness.... it's Charleen!!!!!!!!! This has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written...I was hoping that Charleen would sing it solo...I remember her singing it on the Andy Griffith Show and I literally had tears in my eyes....such a pretty song!!!!
I have the entire cd set of the Andy G show. I love the Darling's She sure wanted to marry Andy cause he was "purty and strong as a tree"

I always love all the songs on the show, but especially this one. Andy also plays it while when sitting on the porch with Aunt Bea in season 5 episode 24.
I fell headfirst in love with Charlene the first time I saw her on the Andy Griffith Show. It's still there! I love this type of music, folks, and well-done.
How fast the years pass. It seems like just yesterday I was a boy watching the Darling family sing this song. I grew up in the country and it was amazing how much Mayberry was like the small town where l lived. Except we weren't lucky enough to have a great band like the Darlings.

Other than Ron Howard who played Opie, she's probably one of the very few left that was on that show. Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, the man who played Howard the Barber, the lady who played Aunt Bee, the one who played Otis the town drunk are now all gone but never forgotten. I miss those times back in the 60's.

It's really hard singing when someone close has passed on. Particularly when you were close to them. I'm glad that it was sung, particularly the new verse.
Listening closely to the lyrics for the first time, this is now my favorite song. It just barely edges out Dooley. That last verse is heavenly.

Beautiful song. Every time I hear it, it stays in my head all day. I always enjoyed Any Griffith shows. I've seen all the episodes. My favorite was when the Darlin's was on the show. I enjoyed all their songs.

I'm only 41 but I remember watching the Andy Griffith show with my grandparents. I always loved the episodes with the Darlings. I use to have my grandfather play this and Dooley all the time. Bluegrass is in my blood and that is something I am proud of.

+Art Lee That's Rodney Dillard. He also wrote the song & is the one original member of the "Darlings" (besides, of course, Charlene). Rodney is who also sang "Dooley" with the Darlings on Andy Griffith. In real life, the Darlings were the Dillards--one of the pioneering "country rock" bands who have influenced everyone from the Eagles to Alison Krauss to Brad Paisley and everybody in between.
