      She made that song. I've heard others do it justice, but it was really Maggie's/"Charlene's" song forever more. Never forgotten that song since I first saw them sing it on the Andy Griffith Show when I was a little tacker. RIP Maggie.
      Country, and Bluegrass music will be poorer without her.

    I was lucky enough to meet the Dillards and Maggie Petersen at a TV taping in Nashville many years ago. They were so gracious, and Maggie was just as sweet as she could be! Then in 1980 I saw Doug Dillard again at a Christmas party at John Hartford's house. I mentioned how much I loved this song, and their performance on the "Andy Griffith Show." He offered to send me a tape, which he did. That's where I learned the third verse. Absolutely the most beautiful bluegrass song ever written. Doug and John are sadly missed. But just imagine the jam session going on in heaven.

    This Song Brought Tears To My Eyes As A Child The Very First Time I Heard It On The Andy Griffith Show Over Fifty Years Ago, And As An African American Child I Learned That All Music Is Beautiful And I Longed To See Those Mountains And Valleys That They Came From. • @4sixLostSouls
    @4sixLostSouls 2 роки тому +23

    I located the complete lyric to the Dillard's original - "There is a time." - The final verse was not done in the TV broadcast - so I had never heard it before. Maggie has added it in this rendition - "So do your roaming in the springtime / And you'll find your love in the summer sun / The frost will come and bring the harvest / And you can sleep when day is done."
    It is a vital part of the message of this tune. It was good to see Rodney, Doug and the Dillard boys show they had emotions in real life. Though I had seen them perform before.
    "There is a time for love and laughter / The days will pass like summer storms / The winter wind will follow after / But there is love, and love is warm.
    There is a time for us to wander / When time is young and so are we / The woods are greener, over yonder / The path is new; the world is free.
    There is a time when leaves are falling / The woods are gray; the paths are old / The snow will come, when geese are calling / We need a fire against the cold.
    There is a time for us to wander / When time is young and so are we / The woods are greener, over yonder / The path is new; the world is free.
    So do your roaming in the springtime / And you'll find your love in the summer sun / The frost will come and bring the harvest / And you can sleep when day is done." This is a link to the song as broadcast years ago - ua-cam.com/video/mzQQibgciRY/v-deo.html

I could tell right away they weren't actors just faking the playing, I knew it was the other way around. She still has a great voice, it's nice to see them still doing these songs. I was a big fan of The Andy Griffith Show and its gentle humor. But those episodes with The Darlings (The Dillards) were extra special. It was real Bluegrass music by real musicians and also gave Andy a chance to play with them and demonstrate his own musical talents.
    Everyone who is inspired by a type of music has to hear it first and this was great exposure for many kids growing up all across the US. The other place for Bluegrass on TV was The Beverly Hillbillies with that theme from Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and their appearances on the show. One kid from New York City, Béla Fleck, became interested in the banjo from that TV show and he’s had quite the career since then!

      Andy was just ad-libbing playing on the show but he could really play the guitar.

    This is such a beautiful song.... I have always loved it, and although it's performed wonderfully by The Dillards, I think Maggie adds a most beautiful voice to it.

    I keep switching back and forth between this version and the original. The passage of time as described in the song becomes very real.

    Now that Rodney is the only one left, I hope some talented band and singer comes along to keep this song alive, otherwise, it will become little more than a memory
