I’ve changed my hair hundreds of times my whole life, never happy with anything I’ve gotten. I finally got dreads over three years ago and I have been happy ever since.
This sounds like me with my hair. I'm 3 weeks in and actually think this is the choice I've been meant to make forever. I wanted dreads since I was a child ❤
I had dreadlocks 3 years ago, I took them out after four months because my boyfriend at the time hated them. He was narcissistic and I was mentally abused by him. He made me feel so terrible about myself I took them out for him. Now I look back and think how on earth someone so horrible had so much power over me. My current boyfriend told me I looked gorgeous back then with them in. He quietly admired them back then and he encourages me to get some more because they make me HAPPY. He WANTS me happy. I did have problems with separating my dreadlocks from the roots, itchiness and sore scalp. However, I have always adored dreads from a very young age. I wanted them when I was early in my teens. I felt very confident with my dreadlocks and felt more myself. I'm hoping to get them back this year❤️
bless you i’m so glad you’re in a better place now, i hope you’re doing well :) you should deffo get them back though! especially if they make you happy💗
Happy to hear you with a non judgemental person that can see you and not just your hair. You are the best judge of yourselve. If it feels good....that's because it is. 😊
This was very insightful. You have inspired me to get dreadlockes ever since I discovered your youtube channel. Its been like 3 years! I won't get them yet but I plan to have them in the future.
What’s fascinating is your what to consider for number one is why I got dreadlocks! I’ve always been super impulsive with my hair, but I’ve always wanted dreadlocks. So I made the jump to LEARN that patience- because that impulsivity is affecting other parts of my life. I had my first impulse the other day so I sat with my hair and maintained it. It helped so much. Dreadlocks are not only beautiful but they’re teaching me some amazing qualities.
Thank you for this. I've had partial dreads for nearly three months now. Planning to dread the rest when my hair gets a bit longer. Weighing all the pros and cons in the meantime.
I have half of my hair dreaded now... It has taken me a long time but it is sooo worth it. Mum isn't supportive at all... But, it makes me happy so she is slowly getting used to them... I recommend a microfibre or super quick drying towel to suck up extra moisture from them... And plenty of oils for the frizz :) thanks for inspiring me to do it though... I love all the new hairstyles I couldn't do before (I have baby fine hair) very good video, so informative 💞 ❤️ much love to you dear 🌻
I was someone that changed hairstyles often, just because my hair is so thick and grows fast and I could never be satisfied with how it looked. I got mine locked almost 2 years ago and finally am happy with my hair. So although I changed often I never regretted my step to lock my hair :)
I love dreadlocks and I think it looks so beautiful. I totally respect every person letting them grow for so many years. I want dreads very bad, but I am not ready to commit to them. My hair grows super slow and it is very short. I love to change my style almost every month. So thank god there are synthetic dreads to braid in. I know that many dreadheads out there don’t like that because the journey of getting dreads is so much deeper and I totally respect that... but I’ll probably get real ones when my hair has grown longer.
I do renaissance festivals and am a pirate re-enactor. I’ve seen many different people wearing dreads and have wanted to try them out for myself for years. I’ve already had the sides of my head shaved for roughly 6 years and loved the dread hawk look. About a month ago I was finally able to afford my first set of synthetic locs - the kind that you braid in - and I LOVE them! I just got a new set of synthetic locs installed this past weekend. I’m seriously considering starting/getting real locs, but am unsure if I have the patience and commitment for them. So, for now, I’ll stick to the synthetic braid in ones. I’ve gotten many positive compliments from people of different races and backgrounds saying that I “rock them” or that I “wear them well”, and it makes me feel really good about myself. 😊
I love my dreadlocks. I just let them happen, stopped brushing my hair 3 years ago. They look good now but were super messy for over a year. I never want to be without my dreads xxxxx as for drying them I sit in front of my log burner that speeds things up 😂🙏
I have one more reason :D If you want to have partial dreadlocks and you will forget to brush your loose hair at least ones a day, be ready to get big mats of hair
I literally bought some double ended synthetic dreads to try out because I’ve been neglecting brushing my hair recently because of my mental health and I’m sick of brushing giant mattes out at the base of my neck. So I’m hoping that having dreads and up keeping those will be easier. And my hair will always be done
I started with synthetic and then wool double ended, I'm on day 6 of having my hair in "real" locs, gonna attach some extensions when they're matured too, I hope yours are everything you want/need❤
This is me. Natural 3A hair type fine and it seriously tries to matte and loc on its own and stay so tangled. I'm tired of fighting the maintenance. People don't realize common European (Irish/Scottish) braids are only meant for a day or two.. it's not a long term style.
Good update to this topic! You were one of my go-to UA-camrs for advice & whatnot while I was researching dreadlocks & deciding if they were for me. I only had mine a year, do to issues of a personal nature, but in that time, some of these advice topics were BIG deals! The length of time to dry --& the weight while they were wet drove me crazy! My boyfriend was somewhat supportive --in the "this is what I would do if I had them" kind of way; my way was the opposite of his opinion, so he always thought he was super supportive but he was always more frustrating than anything. My family HATED my dreadlocks & decided right at the beginning they would simply ignore them & anything I said about them. I also had some issues with dryness through the summer that about frayed my nerves to the breaking point! All that said, I miss them immensely. My hair took quite a blow when I combed them out & while I had them I had half my head shaved, so I'm letting some time pass before installing a new set. Thanks for putting advice content out there, though. I'm doing more research while I grow out my hair so I won't have the same issues the next time around!
To all the people commenting that it’s cultural appropriation… you do realise locs go back through all of history within all races don’t you? The Neanderthals, Vikings, Scottish, Cornish are a small example of a few white cultures/places that had them hundreds of not thousands of years ago. EVERYONE’S hair matts when it is not brushed therefore it locs together this hairstyle was done sometimes out of necessity and for easy upkeep, sometimes for ceremonial reasons and other times just because it looks good. It’s not appropriation you just don’t necessarily know its history within other cultures than your own, the same as someone outside your culture wouldn’t or shouldn’t claim to know it’s history within yours. I wouldn’t claim I truly understand the cultural reason a Jamaican may loc his hair and the history behind his reasons the same as you shouldn’t if I were to within mine (for example).

I have fairly thin hair, since dreads get thicker as they mature they should be good! (Depending on HOW thin your hair is) I have about 40 dreads and they look pretty awesome
Do you really have thin hair? Any texture of hair from straight to 4c can be thin or thick, as in amount/fullness of hair. If you mean that you have soft, straight hair as opposed to course hair, then you have “fine” textured hair and you can totally get dreads🤘🏻 fine hair is not necessarily thin, if you’re talking texture fine hair works well with the twist and rip method
I didn't think about missing brushing my hair... i love the feeling of the brush over my scalp but its been 3 weeks and 2 days now since I've felt it. I gotta say, I'm dreading winter as we get frosts where i live. But I've seen these caps that go on your head that a hair-dryer attaches to to dry dreads.
The Itch. Something most people here and me joke about. I live in a tropical climate, and in summer dreads are HOT and you sweat alot, especially at the back of the neck. The Itch can drive people crazy. Its like wearing a thick beanie all day every day. I've actually shaved my bottom 2 rows at the back of my head and that has made a huge difference.
You should get a hair pick, awesome for itching :) this one has rounded tips to not cause root damage www.amazon.com/Dread-Head-Hancho-Health-Beauty/dp/B002NG7V38 I ordered one right from the company a year ago and it's awesome :) (some reviews say the one from amazon is a knock off, but most people trust amazon so that's why I linked it)
Can you do a video on HOW the lady installed your extensions..? I remember in one of your videos you had said that instead of having them put in regularly, she had crocheted them with your hair.. I'm sorry I don't know how to say it lol
Really good informative video, but I do have a question. You talked about it takes a long time to dry (obviously). But how long does it actually take, because right now the only thing holding me back from getting dreads is that drying process. I would love to se a video all about the different washing and drying ways there is😊
Natasja Schønning Pedersen I only wash every couple of weeks and it does take a full day to completely dry. But it’s dry to the touch in a couple hours. I also leave it totally loose while dry. Don’t put it up at all.
I wash mine twice a week 😊 I use a blowdryer, for it to be possible for them to dry at all. But it does take about 5 hours for them to fully dry, even after using a blowdryer for quite some time 😊
hey I watched your video from 3 years ago and now I was wondering how you are doing and searched you up :D you look even prettier than I remember, keep doing you, have a great day

I took mine out after 5 1/2 years. I loved them but it was time for a change. My reasons for taking them out was these: I missed the fresh smell from schampoo and conditioner when you washed your hair. My dreadlocks Always had a smell of nothing.. Like they didnt smell bad or nice, just hair.. I also wanted the feeling of running my fingers through my hair, I love that feeling! I never felt really pretty when I had dreads, like if I was going somewhere and wanted to look nice, even a strikt hairbun didnt give me the same feeling as when i have my undreaded hair in some fancy hairdo. Dreadlooks works perfectly in festivals or when you want to look cool but I wanted to feel "normal" and pretty sometimes. They also were getting very Heavy after 5 1/2 years of hair not leaving my head. I love that feeling of not carrying around all that hair anymore. Well, that was about it. I did love them though and I´m glad I made them in the first Place, but I probably wont get dreads again..
Love to hear your reasons, but just quickly wanted to mention, that there are many dread shampoos on the market that are lovely scented and will leave your hair with a lovely smell after washing 😇
Yes I know :) I used a Nag champa scented schampoo from Dollylocks that smelled nice but I wanted the usual schampoo smell :) I only washed my dreads like once a month so after the Nag champa smell vanished after a couple of days it just smelled like hair, never Dirty smelling, just plain hair-smell..

Hmmm.. I don´t go with the opinion of...some jobs aren´t compatible with dreads...or what family or boy/girlfriend thinks... Our society needs more tolerance and we dreadheads can be a part of this too. Acceptance for the difference of ppl would be great! I am working for the federal state...I got the job with dreads. You need to know I have partial dreads but I never minded of showing them. My husband doesn´t like my dreads...and I dooon´t care xD cause it´s my hair. Open minded society is the key of a healthy society.
just took mine out, had them for a week before my hair noped right out, because of my fine hair i felt i was crocheting them everyday to try and keep them
11. if you are prone to migraines -.- especially if pony tails used to be triggers.... Still love mine though, but I always think of my hair when I get a migraine starting (usually I think it's diet related though)... So no more (not as effective) head massages as a relief... You can use a pick though to massage your head/stimulate your scalp if you really wanted...
Hi Elise! I would have to add that recently, sadly, I've received more and more comments that I'm culturally appropriating. It might depends where you are from and the colour of your skin, but if you are white, you might get targetted for having your hair in dreadlocks. I don't consider it a deal breaker, but it might be a huge drawback to some people who are considering getting dreadlocks.
Yes, if you live in United States I've experienced this is quite a big thing. If you live in Denmark or Scandinavia, you'll never hear anything like that 😊
@@EliseBuch I'm in Canada and a stand up comedian was banned from doing a show because he's a white guy with dreadlocks very recently.. It's getting a bit crazy here too, sadly..
@Bryony Sumner Right?! Anyone will get matted hair if they dont brush it, me first. It's also why I've decided to get dreadlocks so I wouldn't have to spend hours weekly just detangling my hair lol
@Bryony Sumner i feel you. Loll I can't say if I'll ever be tired of my dreadlocks( they are exactly 2 years and 1 day old today, yay!) But one thing is for sure, I'll always be tired of brushing my stupid tangly hair lol
Cultural appropriation is more about using someone's culture/ ethnicity as a costume (which I don't think you're doing) OR when a group in a position of power receives praise for something that a minority group is negatively judged for. Idk if I'm wording it right, but for example, if a person of color in the USA has dreads, people might say their hair is gross, dirty, or that the person is a stoner or criminal. However, if a person with lighter skin in the USA wears dreads they will USUALLY be "cool", "counter-culture", or "hippie". Personally, I don't care what hairstyle anyone has; its societys' perception of people that needs to change.
well, your hair isn't necessarily going to brake if you brush them out. it depends on how and if you have maintained them with a crochet hook, bleached them and so on, and of course how you brush them out. if you are in a hurry you probably will brake a lot of hair in the process.
Great Video. Do you think regarding #10 that you lost so much length due to using the crochet hook? I have partial dreads and they will be a yr old March 15th. I love having dreads and loose hair. I Palm roll after I wash them but I don't crochet them. xoxoxo
Indian sadhus... Aka naga babas , Acetics always have this . Infact india is first to bring this style comes from Shiva himself.... Aka jattas... There's are many spiritual reason yo have them... That people might not understand.. just keeping it for looks n styles is different matters.. you might like them.. but without knowing reasons n history... gonna make you quit this journey fast
I've had dreads several times but I just cant get past 4 months. Sooo i guess they're not for me mainly bc i'm somewhat sensitive and dont like how they feel on my head. Tho i love the look of them.
Hey Elise! I love your hair it is beautiful!!! I want to do dreads but I am 41 years old I feel like it would suit my life style. I am worried I will not get a lot of support. Also I am worried about it being uncomfortable sleeping and putting hair up on top of head if it is heavy and keeps you from exercise or activities. Please talk more about that. It looks like you wear your dreads down a lot ?
My style is just like yours. My top of head hair left lose. Do you wash all your hair or just lose hair? I have had my locs since 2013 and I do have ribbon and beads.lo I get hay in mine throwing it over the stall door.
Hi Elise, I'm considering getting dreadlocks when my hair will be longer (in maybe 3 years) and I was wondering if it's a go idea for someone that is training 4 to 5 time a week ? PS. I love your video and your online personality ♥
Hi! :) I work out quite a lot too, so it depends on your patience and how often you feel like washing your locks. If you sweat a lot, it will be necessary to actually wash them. I wash mine completely about 1 - 2 times a week. So when I've been working out in the gym I wash around my forehead and neck, when I've been at badminton practice I either wash it all, or put my long locks in a plactic bag, so that I only wash my scalp and the part of the locks that has touched my scalp. It is possible, but it all depends on you :) Thank you for the love.

I just took my dreads out. I had them for a year, they were super dense and hard, everyone thought that they were at least 2 years old. Anyway, it was a pain to brush it out, it took me 4 days. I'm a person that changes hair color often and it was much more difficult with dreads. My hair condition is awesome, my hair is now longer than my dreads were.
@@TheDamina1 I used very small crochet hook and I picked small amounts of hair at a time. And just pulled it out. From time to time I brushed the loose ends with a comb and that's it. I did it on dry hair. I had my dreads down to my chin and one dread took me about an hour to brush out. Some thicker ones even more.
I have decided to shave of my hair (beard), it is practical. I also clean up my loo after it is done. So I get two things for the same price (it feel like thrift shopping). It is no style, so why can't you love a man like me?
@@mifiok7216 it's not just a black hairstyle and it's her hair, she can do whatever she want with it and she's being very respectful with the culture of dread locs and makes it looks good. You act like she's going around getting heavy tans and talking with a blaccent🙄

You should get a hair pick, awesome for itching :)

I ordered one right from the company a year ago and it's awesome :) (some reviews say the one from amazon is a knock off, but most people trust amazon so that's why I linked it)

Tara Kelly thanks😘
I wash mine twice a week 😊 I use a blowdryer, for it to be possible for them to dry at all. But it does take about 5 hours for them to fully dry, even after using a blowdryer for quite some time 😊
Elise Buch thank you😘
Karan Fox cool thanks😘
hey I watched your video from 3 years ago and now I was wondering how you are doing and searched you up :D you look even prettier than I remember, keep doing you, have a great day
So informative..thank you 💕
I had my dreads for 12 years now
Do you feel like you have less guys ask you out because of having dreadlocks?
Not at all. Actually might be the other way around.
this make-up is everything!!!!!!!
Sunny isles Jamaican black castor oil Also has a shampoo and conditioner And it's vegan friendly
I just hate combing my hair and it's all so knotted in some places
I see you've done the challenge ahhhh! Fangirling. You look FABULOUS. (Saw your rockin Blue eye look on Facebook 😄😄😄)
I have a new challenge for you Elise..If you are up for it 😉🌻
Could you create different looks for the NO black eye make up?
A couple of ideas could be🍃
A Neutral look 🌟 maybe golds, peaches, pinks, yellows and oranges?
A professional look 💟 (maybe navy blue or dark brown mascara and eyeliner because that would be the closest to black 🌈
A Going out look 🌵
A night/glam/funky look 🐦
Blues, reds, purples, 🍒
I even want to send you some makeup palletes, eyeliner and mascara to use to help you with your challenges 😁
I hope you have loads of fun with this! It will be a lot of fun to watch you do this 💫🌺🌻🌞🍇🌴🍓🍉💟💖
You're amazing!
I suggest using Sunny isles Jamaican Black castor oil and Their other oils you can Use for You're dry scalp☮❤😻😘😍🐇🐰
Jamaican BLACK CASTOR OIL.... NONE OF THAT TITLE SAYS "HEY WHITE PEOPLE USE ME"
@@BlackGirlMajik As a white girl I use Sunny isles Jamaican black castor Oil For dry scalp Don't just say it's only for you black folk As you know what I use it and I'm a white girl you need to get off your high horse Who can and cannot use These oils Thank you have a nice day
Loll
I can't say if I'll ever be tired of my dreadlocks( they are exactly 2 years and 1 day old today, yay!) But one thing is for sure, I'll always be tired of brushing my stupid tangly hair lol
I Palm roll after I wash them but I don't crochet them.
xoxoxo
the old video is cute don't even think of removing it
I think the worst thing for me would be to have people come up to me often & ask questions lol
I’ve bleached my hair and dyed it a different color is it still safe for me to get dreadlocks.
I've had dreads several times but I just cant get past 4 months. Sooo i guess they're not for me mainly bc i'm somewhat sensitive and dont like how they feel on my head. Tho i love the look of them.
can you still just sit and massage your scalp by fingers softly where the dreadlocks are, can you reach all parts of scalp, or 50\50?
How might one make his dreads more messy after they have already locked
Love you😍💞
Also... I forgot... the itchy scalp with dandruff... Another reason I wanted to take the out.
Hi! :)
I work out quite a lot too, so it depends on your patience and how often you feel like washing your locks.
Thanks to you for your quick and kind reply. I'm very hype to get my locks. have a wonderful day !
no more sweaty after-workout hair! just tie them up and ur all good 👍
You are 👸 queen I am a Dread locks man ppl fight u down can't get job the occult teaching of rasta fari it self reliance we have trads.we create are pay day blessings sister u have a good boyfriend it is a journey
Yeah hey am I watching this when I already have dreads ahha
I can naturally grow dreadlocks after my hair gets long. But I think they are not worth having. I had over 200 dreadlocks.
Would you please call it locks not dreadlocks.
You can get fired for having dreads??

I just took my dreads out. I had them for a year, they were super dense and hard, everyone thought that they were at least 2 years old. Anyway, it was a pain to brush it out, it took me 4 days. I'm a person that changes hair color often and it was much more difficult with dreads. My hair condition is awesome, my hair is now longer than my dreads were.
how did you brush your dreads out? :) which tools did you use? i just brushed out one of mine and i couldn't do it without damaging my hair a lot..
It's obviously different struggles for white people's dreads and black peoples but I like how it looks
I have decided to shave of my hair (beard), it is practical. I also clean up my loo after it is done. So I get two things for the same price (it feel like thrift shopping). It is no style, so why can't you love a man like me?
Will you sell your dreadlocks?
How many you have?
I had 50 :)
You think it's enough 45 double ended to luck same? Sorry but i don't speek english verry good 😂.

There is nothing dreadful about Locs.
Locs are a culture
1A hair takes longer to loc
Textured hair 3A-4C locs faster naturally without instant loc method although all hair can loc
This video must be for those of straight hair who has a harder time trying to loc that 1A hair
Having hair that defies gravity is a gift.
Throughout the history of loc culture Europeans never appeared.
