Dude. Dun fall into the watching art tube and making no art trap. Therein lies a dark and murky land haunted by the screams of broken dreams and wails of disillusioned ghosts. I was drawing on the train the other day and this little kid came up to me after peeking at my drawing for a few stops and asked me how I got ‘so good’ at drawing. I laughed, a tad embarrassed, and then showed him my pencil and paper and said you scribble on this using that and do that everyday for the rest of your life. The kid kind of stood there with his eyes wide open and the he smiled and I gave him my Blackwing and wished him luck. There is no such thing as talent in my opinion. There is only hunger to learn. Especially among professionals. A pro is really somebody who just keeps learning; who loves learning via creating and builds a life around that.

An interesting bit about what Trent said at the 21min mark: Don't "focus" on copying other people's styles. It fundamentally warps your understanding of how to build art. You'll still get better yes , but not like a complete package that fundamental basics will provide you. So yeah, don't compare yourself to other artists, I made that mistake and it grinded me for a few years. The art is incredibly subjective and the dividends can vary WILDLY. Learning to draw is for fun and personal curiosity. Learning to be an "artist" is a whole other beast that requires networking, an image to your name and lots of presence. So past the basics, the most important thing is to make a name for yourself.
Sometimes when I'm not sure about deleting something or erase-painting, I make a mask and paint the parts I want to erase there. If I feel they are good I apply the mask, but if the experiment ended not like I expected, I delete the mask and all those changes disappear. It's a good method to prevent destroying your work by doing harsh editions on it or when you just want to experiment a bit with composition by hiding stuff from different layers.
I've been watching random Adobe product tutorials on UA-cam for at least 7 years now. Never has anything actually explained a few things to me that helped me to understand the ease of actually creating my own shit in Photoshop, rather than just cropping/editing everything else I find on the internet. I got myself an XP Pen Deco on the way and I'm finally ready to look at the basics of being a digital brush artist. I've always understood that the tools don't make the artist, but knowing how to use those tools while learning a new art will always make your life 420.69% easier. I've been a painter of lights on stage as a Light Designer in the live theatre space for over a decade, but fine art has always been so foreign to me (other than that time I posed for the nude class in college). My brain was screaming defiantly, when I noticed that you were drawing on the "background" layer. It took me such a long time to not forget to create a new layer *before* beginning to draw. My advice for beginners: Drawing on the background layer will create problems along the way. Unless you know what you're doing, *always create a new layer first* and draw on that! To this day it makes me angry that Photoshop doesn't immediately create a new layer for you, like many newer art programs do.
@@scorpodile9649 That's a fair point. Still, I wouldn't expect the automatic layer every time a document is opened, but exclusively when you're opening a new blank file. I may be wrong about this, but there seem to be rather few scenarios where you'd open a blank file to touch up a photo.
For the mixer brush, think of it like blending makeup, where you can paint highlights and shadows, then blend them into your midtones. I've found an useful configuration to be: Enable clean brush after each stroke, wet: 5%, load: 20%, mix: 33%, flow: 33%. Those settings, combined with a brush that emulates one of those big, round, floofy makeup brushes, or simply a soft default round brush, will get you some decent blending action without being too over-powering.
This is helpful even for illustrators who're a little more experienced. I've been working with photoshop for years and still an idiot with keyboard shortcuts. Manually increasing brush sizes is time consuming and I've found it messes with my thought process. We're always learning, gotta stay humble and admit when we're not quite doing things right or efficiently. Thanks Trent, you've got yourself a new subscriber :)

Been using photoshop for the past 10 years, but never to draw. Don't really like the "feeling" of it 😕 I use it just to give the last "touches". Paint Tool Sai is my choice, it simple and very responsive, and really never crashed on me. And the watercolor "magic" you can do it's very pleasant 🙃 Not fancy as Photoshop, but that's what really make it perfect to me. Then Clip Studio Paint could be considered a combination of Photoshop x Paint Tool Sai. I just jumped on it a few weeks ago but I'm already amazing at all the features it has!
One thing I like when I get on here and i see people teaching others art is when they say "MATERIAL". I love it!....If you are a noob take that tiny bit of advice with you....that one word alone can separate an amatur from a pro as far as their knowledge and experience. In game design school if you said anything other than material it was bad news LOL. Love the channel~!~!

Since you gave so so many tips to my journey to becoming a better illustrator as a design professional I can finally give something back. DPI or PPI doesn’t matter in this case. It won’t change the sharpness or amount of pixels. At all. It just virtually says how many it has per inch. Try making two files both at 3000x1500. And make them 72ppi and 300ppi. It won’t change the total amount of pixels or sharpness :) Thanks for all the videos!
Thank you so much! I previously drew 50/50 in Autodesk Sketchbook and Paint Tool Sai. I only really did colouring in Sai, because I dislike the sketching brushes there, but I preferred the colouring brushes over those in Sketchbook. I've managed to get Photoshop, because every time I see a profesisonal artist, they use it. I honestly think this is going to go far better than my last attempt, especially with this tutorial. For such a complicated program, the tutorial itself is appropriate for beginning artists who've decided to take the hard route. I love everything about it.

Just recently started using PS and I found out that you could draw on it and I was amazed haha, I know how to draw traditionally but never digital, I like your tutorial, very relaxed, very chill and helpfull 👍🏻👍🏻
DPI or PPI doesn't matter if you never print your images and unlike resizing, it can be changed at any point before printing without quality loss. *What matters is your pixel count.* The more pixels your image has, the bigger DPI or PPI you can use when printing without having to resize your image (and possibly causing loss of quality). A 4k UHD image will look stunning in print. We used to print 1 meter posters from a 6MP DSLRs back in the day. They looked amazing. 4k is 12MP.

Can fully recommend the Huion 13", can be connected to a compatible USB 4? port with a single cable, power included in that. I have the 13", found these better than the XP-Pens, eyeing the Pro model for more dots :D

Man my biggest struggle is transitioning from hard ink lines and bucket color filling to actually panting. For some reason I can't wrap my head around it if I don't have a hard line to tell me where the edge of an object is.

For colors if you rly want to be basic u can just look up some color pallets and it should show u a few. You should also try to learn color theory, there’s a few nice vids on that on yt. And idk much about painting since I normally draw in a more cartoonish style (so more solid lighting most of the time or just simple airbrushing). But yeah idk, that’s about the most advice I can give.

great video, love it, but i just have one thing to say. while the Cintiq 16 is a great choice, there are of course other options (such as huion's kamvas 16, which is 250 dollars less and has almost perfect reviews all across amazon and their website) not to mention non screen tablets. with that said, that's only one small detail out of an entire video, great tutorial.
Yeah when he said that right at the beginning i thought this as well. A Cintiq Is not even close to the realm of a "starter" tablet unless you're just made of money. My first tablet was an intuos pen and touch that i paid $80 for. to suggest a beginner throw down hundreds of dollars on a cintiq of all things is kind of absurd to be honest. A cintiq was always the unattainable dream tablet that i always wished i could have. I recently got an XP-pen artist pro (after using an ipad and apple pencil exclusively for a while) and i'm more than happy with it.
@@crystalgryphon Hey. I'm torn between getting the iPad Pro or just a drawing tablet like the XP Pen for cheaper. I'll be using it with a Macbook Pro. Can I ask, what's the reason that you switched from the iPad to the XP Pen?
@@iroquoispliskin3284 I still use both, but ultimately I just found the iPad too limited for what I wanted to do, at least for right now. I still adore procreate but animation and 3D sculpting options are severely lacking, on top of not really having any reliable streaming/screen sharing options. There’s a few other odds and ends that don’t really have a workaround or alternative either that would be a given on any PC programs. You’re not going to get photoshop levels of functionality out of it. I can’t speak for the more technical/hardware stuff though since I don’t have an iPad Pro, just the earliest model of iPad that supports the Apple Pencil. You might also have to worry about the iPad you buy becoming obsolete fairly quickly, if that’s something you’re worried about. Apple moves fast and you might have to upgrade to an entirely new device in a few years if you want to keep up with new art programs and features that require the better specs of newer models, That said an iPad isn’t a bad choice at all depending on what you want to do with it! I’ve been using iPads to draw for years and they’ve served me well, and the extra portability is an added convenience. If you’re just looking to do general illustration and similar work that’s not too technical I’d recommend it, otherwise you might be better off with the tablet.

I know sidecar is available now so I wan't sure if PhotoShop screen sharing would be better than it was prior to Sidecar which is when I last tested it and didn't like it then. I'm also wanting to get into motion graphics and 3D work so I was thinking a bonafide drawing tablet would be better for those purposes as well. Have you been using After Effects and Blender with your XP Pen?
@@iroquoispliskin3284 yeah i thought sidecar was more trouble than it’s worth haha. It’s ok in a pinch but it’s a bit of a hassle to use since the iPad really just isn’t built for that functionality. There’s a couple alternatives as well but they all have similar issues as far as I’m aware. I have been using blender! I’m still a beginner and haven’t spent much time in it yet, but it works great with the tablet. I’ve yet to set up my hot key buttons on the XP-pen for blender but they’re a massive convenience when I’m illustrating and they would be fantastic for blender as well. You’re definitely going to want the tablet if you want to go all in on motion graphics and 3D, since iPad just doesn’t have that capability (yet). A new app came out recently for 3D sculpting and modeling that’s a lot better than the options iPad had previously, but it’s very much an absolute basics thing. It’s a processing power thing I’m guessing, since 3D takes a LOT of resources and iPads just can’t handle that yet.

You can just unlock the layer and rearrange/select and bring to diff layer

Been using photoshop for the past 10 years, but never to draw. Don't really like the "feeling" of it 😕 I use it just to give the last "touches".
Paint Tool Sai is my choice, it simple and very responsive, and really never crashed on me. And the watercolor "magic" you can do it's very pleasant 🙃
Not fancy as Photoshop, but that's what really make it perfect to me. It's just like having a sheet of paper right in front of you + the art tools! Very traditional feeling!

Then Clip Studio Paint could be considered a combination of Photoshop x Paint Tool Sai. I just jumped on it a few weeks ago but I'm already amazing at all the features it has!
One thing I like when I get on here and i see people teaching others art is when they say "MATERIAL". I love it!....If you are a noob take that tiny bit of advice with you....that one word alone can separate an amatur from a pro as far as their knowledge and experience. In game design school if you said anything other than material it was bad news LOL. Love the channel~!~!

Since you gave so so many tips to my journey to becoming a better illustrator as a design professional I can finally give something back.
DPI or PPI doesn’t matter in this case. It won’t change the sharpness or amount of pixels. At all. It just virtually says how many it has per inch. Try making two files both at 3000x1500. And make them 72ppi and 300ppi. It won’t change the total amount of pixels or sharpness :)

Thank you so much! I previously drew 50/50 in Autodesk Sketchbook and Paint Tool Sai. I only really did colouring in Sai, because I dislike the sketching brushes there, but I preferred the colouring brushes over those in Sketchbook. I've managed to get Photoshop, because every time I see a profesisonal artist, they use it. I honestly think this is going to go far better than my last attempt, especially with this tutorial. For such a complicated program, the tutorial itself is appropriate for beginning artists who've decided to take the hard route. I love everything about it.

Ctrl+Backspace will fill the layer with the current background color.

I use Affinity Photo and it is almost close to Photoshop. I did not wanted to get into a monthly subscription for now. I’m just practicing and is for personal use. Thanks for sharing this video.

watching this video because the last version of Photoshop I use was 1997, I am currently using Clip Studio, because I like doing comic art as well, but I am going to also use Photoshop as well, when I create I like as many options as I can.

DPI or PPI doesn't matter if you never print your images and unlike resizing, it can be changed at any point before printing without quality loss. *What matters is your pixel count.* The more pixels your image has, the bigger DPI or PPI you can use when printing without having to resize your image (and possibly causing loss of quality). A 4k UHD image will look stunning in print. We used to print 1 meter posters from a 6MP DSLRs back in the day. They looked amazing. 4k is 12MP.

Just moved from pen and paper to digital art with a Wacom Cintiq 22 (awesome!!) but as a complete noob to photoshop I was genuinely struggling to make any headway. Very few tutorials actually go into the "nuts and bolts mechanics" of how to use the program to get results. Instant subscribe and like from me. Can fully recommend the Huion 13", can be connected to a compatible USB 4? port with a single cable, power included in that. I have the 13", found these better than the XP-Pens, eyeing the Pro model for more dots :D

This is a great refresher! I've experimented with drawing in Photoshop quite a bit but have yet to try to complete an illustration there. With this video, I feel inspired to take a new step forward. Where can I download your brushes?
Man my biggest struggle is transitioning from hard ink lines and bucket color filling to actually panting. For some reason I can't wrap my head around it if I don't have a hard line to tell me where the edge of an object is.

Hey trent, im 16 yo and just barely learning to draw and probably learn digital drawing in a few month so this video is really useful, probably you can give me or us like painting and color tips bcs that i really struggle a lot and i would love to improving it, anyway thanks your video really inspiring me :)
For colors if you rly want to be basic u can just look up some color pallets and it should show u a few. You should also try to learn color theory, there’s a few nice vids on that on yt. And idk much about painting since I normally draw in a more cartoonish style (so more solid lighting most of the time or just simple airbrushing). But yeah idk, that’s about the most advice I can give.

great video, love it, but i just have one thing to say. while the Cintiq 16 is a great choice, there are of course other options (such as huion's kamvas 16, which is 250 dollars less and has almost perfect reviews all across amazon and their website) not to mention non screen tablets.
with that said, that's only one small detail out of an entire video, great tutorial.
Yeah when he said that right at the beginning i thought this as well. A Cintiq Is not even close to the realm of a "starter" tablet unless you're just made of money. My first tablet was an intuos pen and touch that i paid $80 for. to suggest a beginner throw down hundreds of dollars on a cintiq of all things is kind of absurd to be honest. A cintiq was always the unattainable dream tablet that i always wished i could have.
I recently got an XP-pen artist pro (after using an ipad and apple pencil exclusively for a while) and i'm more than happy with it.
@@crystalgryphon Hey. I'm torn between getting the iPad Pro or just a drawing tablet like the XP Pen for cheaper. I'll be using it with a Macbook Pro. Can I ask, what's the reason that you switched from the iPad to the XP Pen?
@@iroquoispliskin3284 I still use both, but ultimately I just found the iPad too limited for what I wanted to do, at least for right now. I still adore procreate but animation and 3D sculpting options are severely lacking, on top of not really having any reliable streaming/screen sharing options. There’s a few other odds and ends that don’t really have a workaround or alternative either that would be a given on any PC programs. You’re not going to get photoshop levels of functionality out of it. I can’t speak for the more technical/hardware stuff though since I don’t have an iPad Pro, just the earliest model of iPad that supports the Apple Pencil.
You might also have to worry about the iPad you buy becoming obsolete fairly quickly, if that’s something you’re worried about. Apple moves fast and you might have to upgrade to an entirely new device in a few years if you want to keep up with new art programs and features that require the better specs of newer models,
That said an iPad isn’t a bad choice at all depending on what you want to do with it! I’ve been using iPads to draw for years and they’ve served me well, and the extra portability is an added convenience. If you’re just looking to do general illustration and similar work that’s not too technical I’d recommend it, otherwise you might be better off with the tablet.

You pretty much addressed my main concerns about the iPad. I know sidecar is available now so I wan't sure if PhotoShop screen sharing would be better than it was prior to Sidecar which is when I last tested it and didn't like it then.
I'm also wanting to get into motion graphics and 3D work so I was thinking a bonafide drawing tablet would be better for those purposes as well. Have you been using After Effects and Blender with your XP Pen?
@@iroquoispliskin3284 yeah i thought sidecar was more trouble than it’s worth haha. It’s ok in a pinch but it’s a bit of a hassle to use since the iPad really just isn’t built for that functionality. There’s a couple alternatives as well but they all have similar issues as far as I’m aware.
I have been using blender! I’m still a beginner and haven’t spent much time in it yet, but it works great with the tablet. I’ve yet to set up my hot key buttons on the XP-pen for blender but they’re a massive convenience when I’m illustrating and they would be fantastic for blender as well.
You’re definitely going to want the tablet if you want to go all in on motion graphics and 3D, since iPad just doesn’t have that capability (yet). A new app came out recently for 3D sculpting and modeling that’s a lot better than the options iPad had previously, but it’s very much an absolute basics thing. It’s a processing power thing I’m guessing, since 3D takes a LOT of resources and iPads just can’t handle that yet.
