So I watched this the other day... I used to think I painted a pretty good sky... then I had a look at a painting I'm working on that I wasn't so happy with, I just couldn't finish it... I realised the sky was definitely not well done. So with your tips I just thought I'd start all over again. The result after listening to your video makes me very happy. It does take some practice though! You make it look so simple... it was a real balance of finding the right amount of water, brush pressure indeed (I was pushing too hard), and washing the brush. I get lazy there and had to do those parts again. Thank you again for your tips. You're a good teacher.
Hi Christie! I'm really glad it helped you! Acrylics are really really hard for blending... That's why I try to paint in a more expressive style most of the time. If I preferred a very realistic style (which I don't) I think I would have switched to oil paint by now... A tip that I didn't mention in the video, especially if you want to paint clouds and shadows, is to dilute the paint with matte medium instead of water... to create a translucent paint mix (the glazing technique). The blending process might be more vibrant in some cases with that technique. :o) Have a great rest of the week!

I prefer doing the blending part of the background first, because then it helps me to know what I need to change beforehand. Gradients are really hard to achieve, but I recommend thick paint with dampened brush, you first paint the lighter part and put a drop of the paint above/below it where you want the gradient. Then without cleaning the brush from the lighter part, start spreading the drop. This has helped me get some perfect gradients, especially while painting horizons.
