LET'S PRACTICE: ACRYLIC PAINTING! (so we can improve and get better and not suck)

- The only way to improve is to...do. Which sometimes can feel like the hardest thing to accomplish. Well, I want to improve so I'm gonna try and make a habit out of painting something every month with my acrylic paints. To improve my color mixing, hand eye coordination with the brushes, and overall blending. There is a lot that goes into painting. Luckily, it all comes flying at you when you try. If there is something you want to improve on and just haven't felt the insp, this is the universe telling you to give it a try. ;)
Also, now that I've been looking at the finished painting for a few days. The green background reminds me too much of mold. and I don't really want mold to even cross someone's mind when they are looking at a delicious waffle and fruit. hahaha something to keep in mind for the future. XP

Agree
I’m primarily a digital artist, but I do find myself missing traditional painting so I painted for the first time in I’d say a year just a couple days ago. This video has me even more motivated to paint again.
I’ve recently stopped painting since art has become very stressful. I’ve kinda blocked art out for a bit, unintentionally. Even though it makes me so happy, it’s just become bland for me. Hopefully this video can inspire me to start painting again!
I wish you the best with painting Jelly!
@@snippyhera thank you so so much, Olivia!
i'm sorry to hear that. you might just need a little break. no shame in that. i find that when i do take breaks, i start getting that desire to draw after a while. Just gotta wait it out. If its been a really long time, then I'd recommend just sitting down to try. But otherwise, let yourself have a break.
@@drawingwiffwaffles thank you so much for your advice, waffles. It means a lot. I’ll try it out for sure
I agree, sometimes a mental breath is needed. Or try something completely different than your usual art style or type and see if it inspires you.
And again. I was just about to paint with acrylic paints. :0 now i can draw alongside that video ;--; thaaanks~♡

i adore when you work with paint, it’s so interesting watching you learn new things and what not. I have no artistic talent but it’s still lovely watching your videos 💗🥺
Thanks for the kind words! if you ever feel a desire to draw, i hope you'll let yourself do it without any judgement.
I was literally surfing UA-cam for smith to watch while painting with acrylics, and guess what you dropppp!
Also, kinda digging your nails gurl and up can you tell me how to keep up with a sketchbook, I have one, I even try but... the sad reality lol
But I’m happy now that you’ve posted ❤️💖
what a coinky-dink!
My recommendation would be to keep the sketchbook nearby. If its there, you might find yourself grabbing for it whenever you're not doing anything. If you have to get up to find it, you probably won't use it. :)
even though the question isn’t directed at me i just wanted to add a little tidbit that helped me a lot, if your sketchbook is sorta intimidating sometimes, it helped for me to just start drawing on some spare paper so that i didn’t feel the weight of “this is going to be in this book forever”, and if i liked it, i could reference it later or glue it in the book .v. it also helps to just get you into the feel of drawing so that you can create some more
@Nightshade I have the dotted lines on the pages that make it really easy to rip pages out cleanly and at first I was kinda afraid to take pages out but then I realized like you said that it’s just less pressure if it’s not like it has to be there forever
THANKYOU SO MUCH ALL OF YOUUU
Some sketchbook tips from someone how goes though a sketchbook a Month:
1. Get into the habit of drawing everyday (you don't have to get used to this right away, but slowly work towards it, if you want I can explain how I did this in more detail)
2. Buy an art supplies you really enjoy, and only let yourself use it in you sketchbook
3. Make OCs, designing OCs is a great way to fill up a sketchbook
4. Buy/find decorative paper and draw on it, and stick it in you sketchbook, I do this all the time with things like paper bag (this can also help you with your color theory and with being more cohesive)
5. Study color theory, you can fill alot of pages figuring things out.
6. Draw over unusual textures (I personally love drawing over paint)
7. Study new things (human anatomy, animal anatomy, plants)
8. Writing storys (coming up with places, people, clothing and world building can lead to you drawing things like scenes)
9. Buy small sketchbooks. (If you don't have alot of pages in a sketchbook it can give you more motivation to finish the next one)
10. Make welcoming pages (I full my welcome page with quotes) you can do this by adding a solid painted background, a finished illustration, etc.
11. Trying new art supplies (figuring out how they work can prompt you to draw for longer)
12. Working on you art style/devolving your art style. (You draw for longer trying to figure.out particular things about it)
13. Try art trends (fills more pages and can help you find a new art supplies to use in your sketchbook)
14. Study light Theory.
15. Draw whenever watching a certain UA-camr/podcaster. (If you make a point at first, over time you brain gets used to it and you start doing it subconsciously)
I have more if you'd like :)
this makes me want to get out my art supplies and start painting :>

I relate so much to this video man- Whenever I drew, it left me unsatisfied and then I'd cover it up, tone it down a bit, blend it and I'd still be unsatisifed but by the end of the painting I'd go easy on myself and relax a bit. Also the waffles look epic
Im glad you're showing your progress with paint. I'm literally struggling with my 3rd acrylic painting right now. I don't paint at all and have been wanting to learn and this was the perfect motivation to keep at it tonight while listening.
I keep replaying the growl at 13:15.
"This is kind of my favorite way that it looks but... uh... I confess, I changed it and basically threw that away, so now we're back to the way it was before" *tiny growl*
This is the story of my life with art.
I really love what you did, that ending with the pop of saturated teal really tied it together in my opinion!
Also your nails are so adorable.
Ahhh I felt this process to the depths of my bones. The result is so beautiful and I definitely need to remind myself it's ok to struggle to get there!
"Oldy moldy" mismatched brushes and the random, messy pallet are such an artist mood.
Dear Rin
Just a underrated tip of advice from a fellow artist
Something that could really help you is having a scrap of artist’s paper beside you while you paint to test out your newly mixed colours on before putting them directly onto the canvas
Hope this helps 😊
Rin: a canvas isn't a painting unless you add (takes deep breath) bear with me...

The way she added the highlights and details to make it realistic, it looked like a commercial
I taught myself to paint with acrylics about 5 years ago. I love painting so much, but recently I have been struggling finding motivation to create and also the confidence to try. I have felt like I suck and don't know what i'm doing because I always have to paint over parts, and restart and that I seemingly can't blend colors and just my mind says "YOU SUCK STOP PAINTING". Your video and commentary has shown me that it is completely normal to redo things and start over and try multiple times. And if a wonderful artist like you does that, then I am not a weirdo and I don't "suck". Thank you.
As a Art student i can confirm acrylic paint doesn’t get easier the more you do it you always have the struggle of the plastic texture but honestly this is amazing ! And I’ve never thought of doing the darks first I always use the light then layer but maybe dark to light would be easier (more paint is used though )
I love it!! Kudos to you for not giving up!! You worked thru all the uncomfortable areas and kept it moving!! Very encouraging!!! In the end it’s a beautiful painting!
perfect timing! I was just about to do my art homework and now I can watch this while painting! ✨😋

"I grabbed a white posca to sign my name thinking i was done"
"Here i showed the camera my drawing thinking i was done, are you sensing a theme here?"
Yes,yes i am
Hey I just wanted to explain some of the points and give a critique to hopefully help you become a bit more comfortable with painting.
1) I really like that you toned your canvas, however I'd try not putting so much white. If you have a value scale and the original gessoed canvas is a 1 and ivory black from the tube is 10 you brought your canvas from a 1 to at most 3. Starting on a mostly neutral surface allows you to push and pull the value back and forth while you start the work.
2)This is definitely a personal preference thing but I'd also suggest sketching the drawing on the canvas with pencil. You're a good drafts artist and I think leaning into your strength to start on a good drawing foundation will help you a lot.
3)Around 7:00 you are explaining working dark to light. This is great and how most painters paint because the purest and most vibrant colors are the ones straight out of the tube. Even if you mix something with white you might lighten the value but you will dull the vibrancy.
4)When you start to render focus on value shapes not your preconceived idea of the object. I feel like this has something to do with your apprehension with paints because when you draw or use markers you're really really good at focusing on value shapes to build from.
5)There is a concept in painting(and, as you know, in drawing) called lost and found edges. The bottom right edge of the group of raspberries in your reference is a great example of it. Though there is 6 individual raspberries there is one collective value that they share. You don't have to separate them. Instead you allow that edge to be "lost" with one blob of paint to represent it and "find" the place where the light starts to hit. It creates this beautiful contrast!
My wife showed me your videos and we really enjoy watching them together in the evenings. Please keep up the good work!
I'd love to connect sometime and talk more about your painting as I think you'll pick it up really well by exploring more of the concepts! Again, love your videos and keep up the awesome work!
As, said mentioned wife, we do really love your videos. Please don't think he's trying to mansplain anything. He did actually go to school for fine arts (specialized in oil painting) so he really loves giving and receiving art critiques.

Rin, You are doing such good work! I believe your stretching yourself and with acrylic, this is brave of you! Entertaining for your viewers too, yet I am excited for you too. I recommend a stay-wet palette or a spray bottle if your really attached to your glass plate to keep your paint wet and ready to use. You might consider giving your painting a finish coat with a gloss or satin medium. This will punch up the berries and may have a settling effect to the background. Just an option to think about. Now go enjoy your week-end!
