Glad you enjoyed the pies! Definitely a lot of good spots around Australia to grab some amazing ones. Fergusons can be good in a pinch, but they're also kinda like the Maccas of pies, just they're way overpriced (especially for delivery). They're a good place to dip your toe in and see if meat pies are your thing or not, but for the most part they're just mass produced and pretty generic. If you want to get into trying some really, genuinely good pies then you have to head out of the cities and more out into the country. My personal favourite is Tims pies and cakes out in Monbulk, about a 1h 15m drive out of Melbourne. Theyre in the Dandenong Ranges which has some of Victorias best touristy spots to hang out, but Monbulk itself is just more of a country town vibe. Theyve got pizza pies, curry pies, a bunch of different steak pie varieties that have proper chunks of steak in them, and a few really good veggie ones too if youre looking for that. Like most country bakeries theyre quite cheap for what you get too, and 5 pies would set you back maybe $30-$35AUD The classic example of an amazing country bakery is the Emerald Village bakery, about an extra 15 minutes away from the city and further into the mountains than Monbulk. Emerald itself is a stunning and gorgeous area up in the mountains, and that bakery has become so famous its a tourist destination in itself at this point, and they've extended multiple times so now its hard to even just call it a bakery. The range of pies and other baked goods they have there is craaaazy, and it has some of the best bakery-style foods you will get anywhere in Victoria (and Australia). They definitely take advantage of their popularity these days though and charge through the teeth for their food which sucks, since I remember growing up and eating stuff from here all the time and it was cheap and delicious. Theyre not quite what they were in their prime about 10 years ago, but still one of the best examples of amazing baked foods, and in a gorgeous location. Otherwise to get the genuinely amazing baked foods you have to go way out into the country, at least a couple hours from the city at local bakeries in small towns off the highways. These bakeries are almost always an absolute banger with daily handmade homestyle pies, and theyre usually cheap as hell. Theres so many good ones that its hard to list, and theyre so far out of the way that its hard to justify travelling for them unless youre driving between major cities. Still, if you find yourself out in the country somewhere I absolutely recommend stopping off at a local town off the highway and checking one of these bakeries out, theyre great.
