    A tuck shrink has to be trapped by flattening the point of the tuck first. Then you flatten the rest of the tuck from the point to the edge. Simply flattening the tuck without trapping it doesn't yield as much shrinkage. Ron Fornier explains this very well in his books and videos. I've seen methods of putting tucks in that actually stretch the metal first. Of course, that's counter productive. A tuck should be a bend only thing. The pliers you have can probably be adjusted so that they don't do any stretching. Cool Tool!

    clamp a piece of flat bar at each end of the flange and the shrinks can then be planished flat without losing any of the curve👍

    In the aircraft industry they call them Fluting Pliers. I am going to have to make one of these. I did do something similar to put a bead in a turbo tube that I shortened but didn't want it to blow of.

    Nice tool mod! My best was welding nuts on the threaded rod of a C clamp and using my rattle gun to spin it. Use it everyday. Yes, we need to move thick bronze castings quite a distance at times.

    nice tool. taper the bars for a more efficient tuck. also heat the tucks cherry red and then hammer them out, you'll only have to do it once.

    I wonder if what you saw was aviation flouting pliers. They do same thing but shrink in a pie shape. Those are cheap say under $20, but haven't priced lately you can get from aircraft tool supply aka ATS, Wicks aircraft, Aircraft Spruce and dozens of others. Isn't the Lincoln shrinker the one that forms a dozen small shrinks? Used on furnace duct stuff?

    It's a great idea I just wonder if another style of plier would be better, the vise grips look a little awkward, maybe a small bolt cropper? Just a thought.

    Much love to AvE…..but ToT is the Sensei of metal magic!!!! Nice trick with what could be junk pliers. Would changing the diameter possibly change the effect?

    • @RACGARAGE
      @RACGARAGE  2 роки тому +1

      I think it would be the same effect but it would also effect the time it takes to get your desired bend. I wouldn’t go any larger that what I used.

    Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !"
    Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
    Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
    Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
    Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
    Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
    Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
    Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?

    Dig the videos, BUT, please, please, please keep your welding hood far enough away from the arc/fume area because those gasses are going up under your head gear. Simply place your work piece slightly above the bottom of your gear at least a few more inches. Lot's of people that have had those gasses circulate under their hood are no longer with us. I'm far from a negative safety Nancy, just be smarter.
