I have one pair of 10 inch locking pliers that I keep in my plumbing kit. Like you said, they are good for stripped bolts. They lock so tight and cut into the bolt grabbing it solid. They've saved me a few times. They are a a essential tool in your kit, imo.

For sure dude. I can’t tell you how many times I have used them and been so thankful that I had a good pair of vise grips. They are major life savers when you need them.

I have the original visegrip and the eye brand (Germany) for more than thirty years now. They are still in excellent conditions. True: you just can't beat the original.

FYI the old New Britain locking pliers are the exact same thing. I realized this when I compared the build quality and measurements. Then I compared the patent numbers stamped on both brands and they are identical.

I definitely have too many! All vintage mostly straight jaw. Even have a couple 1st ones with no release handle that are No7. I absolutely love vise grips. I have so many because I know my son will eventually need some. Whenever I needed them I never had them so I went on a buying spree and have more than enough now. Nothing like the old originals! They're so so much more solid. All mine the teeth are in excellent shape! It's crazy how good they stood up to abuse. I just like collecting vintage tools and these are one of my favorites. Thanks for the video

You can grip blades for cutting, a hammer head for hammering and prying, various bits for drilling or screwing, sockets for nuts and bolts...

Another brand to look for in vintage locking pliers is Proto. Some of the older Proto locking pliers have the Vise-Grip patent number meaning they were either licensed by or manufactured by Peterson Mfg. Proto had the curved and straight jaw versions in an 8 inch plier, with the patent, but they made many of the same versions Vise-Grip made.

I love vintage Proto. I’ll definitely snag those if I see them. Old Proto pliers are pretty rare in my area for some reason.

I bet they are great. I should pick some up before they shut down. I heard about that. Man they are pricey though! I still will probably get some though just to have them. At least I’ll know they are worth the money. Everyone says they are the real deal.

Soo good when one does not fancy losing grip if needing to twist something. Used multi purpose pliers and knipex wrenches and im just too weak in my old hands now. Vice grips are genial. :)

I buy them no matter how many I have. The og ones are great and when you find them at sales like you said they are $1 or so. Might as well get everyone I find instead of paying $20-75 for new ones

My thoughts exactly. The nice vise grips brand new are expensive! And the old USA ones are super cheap. I feel like I’m stealing a little bit when I get them for a dollar 😂

You're right about people having lots of them. My dad had them everywhere. He recently passed away and as I went through his tools I found 3 of the medium sized curved jaw, plus he had the small needle nose and the 5 inch in the kitchen junk drawer.

Yup my Irwin vice grips don't last. The pins got tons of wiggle in em and the teeth rounded off. The release lever doesn't do anything either anymore.

    Clean Vice Grips?
Not around my neck, of the woods.
    -
    Welding marks, staining, scratches.
    Rust....rust, rust
    Broken springs, jaws, strip threads.
    Tooth missing...
    -
Found a pair left by a burnt truck, on the side of the road.
The largest pair I've ever seen.
    Still worked, but ugly.
    -
I throw in the recycle bin, about 3 to 5 every month.
    Very common, road side debris.
    I warrantied two yesterday.
And a pair of slip joint pliers ive found.
    All Irwin.
    -
I use my vice grips, as pliers and wire cutters.
Also the one I use as EDC holds saws all blades really well.

I have several pairs most of which I bought for next to nothing at yard sales. Estate sales are especially good as the sellers sometimes are against a house closing date and they have to get the house cleaned out quickly. As a result the prices can be very reasonable. All of mine are original Peterson not Irwin or a cheap imported clone.
