    Fantastic advice. Thank you. I was not aware that it would maintain a height above 60ft. I assumed it would descend to 60' since there is no documentation to the contrary. I will have to try this feature in a wide open field. It's a fantastic piece of advice.
    HOWEVER it's worth mentioning that it is imperative that the Phantom has a GPS lock upon initialization for it to return home.
    I just received my Phantom 2 a couple of weeks ago and was just experimenting with the fail safe. When I went a bit too far to tell which direction I was pointing and not wanting to risk loosing my 2k + piece of equipment, I put it into fail safe and to my delight and relief it came right back to me. It's an invaluable feature.
    I'm all for you testing out things so I don't have to crash or loose mine.
    Thanks again!

    Thanks, mate! My Phantom 2 Vision is on its way and I appreciate any advice I can get. My first plans are to fly over my 80 acre wetland restoration project. It will be especially interesting when the ducks and Sandhill Cranes get here in March, as long as they don't see it as a predator.

    I had to send my drone back in, it would get anywhere from 1 meter to 100 meters away, loose contact with the controller (still have video) and then come back and land about 5 meters from where it took off. This was its last 2 flights before it went in to the shop, each time it almost came down on a bush or a tree, 1st time I had to move a large bush limbs back and grab the thing to keep it from crashing into the branches... Unit was less than a week old, only had maybe 10 flights on it.

    I plan to fly over a cliff so wanted to check this, have you tried resetting home position in the air over start point to add extra height to the failsafe, manual suggests it would then use that initial height plus 20m so could be a good option in high obstacle terrain.

    • @HypervisionAustralia
      @HypervisionAustralia  10 років тому

      I am unclear as to why you would want to set a new home position in the air?
      Why not just set it where you are standing..?
      I'm not sure if understand correctly

    • @jamesb72
      @jamesb72 10 років тому

      HypervisionAustralia To increase failsafe height to avoid obstacles/tree's, if you reset home position at 30M, failsafe height will then be 30+20M so 50M, so you can be assured return home will clear obstacles - I used this at the weekend and it works perfectly. Also useful if you are hand launching having set home position on lower ground.

    I am thinking of getting a phantom vision but i wish they had fitted a similar thing like the i phone has where you could locate it if you lose it as i have seen loads of fly aways on youtube .

    • @HypervisionAustralia
      @HypervisionAustralia  10 років тому

      We will be dedicating a segment to "fly aways" in March. We think they are 99% avoidable! There are also plenty of GPS trackers or FPV units to watch your phantom or see where it goes.

  • @MrSky084
    @MrSky084 9 років тому +1

    So what would happen if you were on a hill/mountain/peak, and you were flying 'BELOW' your take off point (in a valley for example) and you lost signal?

    • @patrickmcnamar5705
      @patrickmcnamar5705 9 років тому

      MrSky084 It will go to the return to home altitude (default 66 feet) and then fly home. So if you were flying in a valley 100 feet below your takeoff point, it would ascend to 166 feet and fly home. If you are flying at 150 feet above take off point, it will remain at the height while returning home and then descend and land.

    Can you regain control when your phantom is on his way back home? Happened to me yesterday and it landed safely but I couldn't control it when it came back in range.

    • @HypervisionAustralia
      @HypervisionAustralia  10 років тому +1

      Hi Denis, Yes you just use the right hand switch and click into centre position, you then will have control back.
      But you must ensure Phantom lights have returned to green first, otherwise it hits the deck!
      You can then return the switch to normal operation once you have control back

    Which one would you prefer: is it better to buy - Phantom 2 with Zenmuse gimbal (I've got Pro3+) or Phantom 2 Vision? All happy DJI users - please let me know what you are thinking? Thx

    • @LakeHartwellSimon
      @LakeHartwellSimon 10 років тому

      Hi Roberto -
      I am not experienced (yet); but I chose to go with the Phantom 2 w/the Zenmuse gimbal and GoPro Hero3+ Black edition. The reason why I decided against the Vision is because I wanted the flexibility to switch out cameras; and I think with the Zenmuse gimbal you get better stabilization given the reviews I have seen.
      Every thing arrives next week, so I'll try to remember and come back and give you better feed back and maybe a link to a youtube video of the footage.

    • @robertoszczecin
      @robertoszczecin 10 років тому

      Thank you!!! I think about flexibility for switching in future. But would it be difficult just to take off Vision camera? and instal something else - I wonder. Thx
      I think I'm going to make decision this weekend - I need it for May - have to practice first ;)

    About setting the home point on top of a building :). What do you think would happen if the Phantom miss the building and decided to land lets say a few meters off the building edge. Would it switch off its motors once it gets on the level with the building's roof (even if there is many more meters of just air under it) or would it continue descending until it would reach the actual ground (street). I presume that if it only knows the relative altitude from the take off, it would probably swith off while in the air and crash :) but I really wonder if I am not underestimating it :).

    • @HypervisionAustralia

    Excellent coverage of an important topic. The DJI logic that an aircraft should always automatically fly UP to avoid an obstacle during failsafe RTH is fundamentally flawed as evidenced by this video ua-cam.com/video/x--dX808aEc/v-deo.html and supported by your comment, "..what happens if there's a tree or building in the way?"
    The fact that a pilot can customize the RTH altitude feature is an acknowledgement that different circumstances require different handling.
    The problems are easy to address with a firmware upgrade which could include the following (note that I am writing about v 1.3.20 which was released in Aug 2015):
    (1) The current RTH Altitude options are limited between 20-500M. 20m (65 feet) is too high to be the minimum altitude in certain situations. Solution: lower the minimum altitude range.
    The max altitude of 500m (1,600+ feet) violates FAA regs in many parts of the US. I've not tested this to see how this interacts with the setting that auto limits altitude to 400 feet. Solution: Make sure the the airspace regs override the setting and provide user feedback during entry if there is a conflict.
    (2) The current RTH Altitude options permit an entry of "0" which can lead one to believe it would not ascend. Why else would it accept the input? Solution: Field validation on input and clearer on screen feedback to prevent incorrect assumptions.
    (3) You will note from the flight data in the video that once RTH was engaged the aircraft actually veered further from the home point, else it would have cleared the tree canopy at 60+ feet. Solution: Investigate and resolve.
    (4) The accompanying aircraft video footage clearly shows me manually bringing the aircraft towards the home point in a safe and controlled manner. It was at 6.6 feet when the failsafe suddenly took control away from me. While this may be by design, I submit that the logic is flawed. Common sense suggests that interrupting a pilot's active command of an aircraft is dangerous. Solution: #1 above and #5 below would address this. Additionally, change the software to seek permission from the pilot to take over.
    (5) In the event a low battery RTH is triggered and the pilot is locked out of manual control (presently when below 20m), there needs to be a quick and easy way to override the rapid ascent. In my scenario, the aircraft rose 6.6 feet per second. Solution: Joystick control should automatically override the ascent.
    Hope this makes sense. Happy and safe flying!
