very well informed video to us newbies! Thank you.
keep them coming!
thank you, this tip was so helpful!!
Very good tip thanks!
thank you great piece
Kenny
Very good tutorial! I've chosen the phantom 2 with gimbal... been flying the first times a few weeks ago... And knowing what to do really helps things along!
This is the result (for now..):
First Flight DJI phantom 2 - with Zenmuse H3-2D gimbal & Gopro Hero 3+ Edit
It's just a blast to film and fly this thing!
thank you for the info it helps a lot
Thanks for the info
Nice video!
Fantastic advice. Thank you. I was not aware that it would maintain a height above 60ft. I assumed it would descend to 60' since there is no documentation to the contrary. I will have to try this feature in a wide open field. It's a fantastic piece of advice.
HOWEVER it's worth mentioning that it is imperative that the Phantom has a GPS lock upon initialization for it to return home.
I just received my Phantom 2 a couple of weeks ago and was just experimenting with the fail safe. When I went a bit too far to tell which direction I was pointing and not wanting to risk loosing my 2k + piece of equipment, I put it into fail safe and to my delight and relief it came right back to me. It's an invaluable feature.
I'm all for you testing out things so I don't have to crash or loose mine.
Thanks again!
It is a great feature if used properly! We will continue to crash ours for you!!!
I just ordered the vistion 2 + they talked me into waiting hope its worth the extra bucks,,,should be getting it this week,,,cant wait
Valuable tip, thanks for sharing.
Our pleasure Rob, we have more tips coming online next week
oh man, thank you for the information, I was worried about that valley think. and the phantom flying over the 30 feet seating to go tome.
Thanks, mate! My Phantom 2 Vision is on its way and I appreciate any advice I can get. My first plans are to fly over my 80 acre wetland restoration project. It will be especially interesting when the ducks and Sandhill Cranes get here in March, as long as they don't see it as a predator.
My 2 + came yesterday and was great right out of the box now to learn all the little details
My tip! Stay away from trees and don't descend too fast!!
Thanks, very good to know :)
Very informative, I wish I had known this before mine hit a tree! Keep up the good work.
Oh dear! It happens ...... Hope you both came out of it ok!
thanks guys
Thanks for the video! Just got my Phantom 2 and trying to find as much information as possible on how these things work!
We will be posting lots of tips we hope you will find useful this year
Thanks
thanks.
Just a tip, if you want better control and steadier flying in wind remove the prop guards as they catch the wind.
I had to send my drone back in, it would get anywhere from 1 meter to 100 meters away, loose contact with the controller (still have video) and then come back and land about 5 meters from where it took off. This was its last 2 flights before it went in to the shop, each time it almost came down on a bush or a tree, 1st time I had to move a large bush limbs back and grab the thing to keep it from crashing into the branches... Unit was less than a week old, only had maybe 10 flights on it.
Great tip thank you so much. You have my attention now and enjoy the new subscribe. The Bare Kiwi film crew.
Thanks Guys! Hope you enjoy the new stuff we have coming online soon
Here's a lowlight test that I shot with GoPro Hero 3 Black, Dji PHantom & Zenmuse Gimbal. 1080p30f, cut using Avid Media Composer 6.0.

How do I know if the fail safe is on and how do I set the home base?
Sick track what was that?
Hi i tried to make the last upgrade 09.02.14 and this happens any clue what i have to fix? thanks
DJI PHANTOM Out of control
I put my Phantom into FS/Auto home mode, then as it descended it when into a death wobble. DJI Phantom 2, Failsafe crash,West Port My, 27Apr14
Thanks for that tip i thought it would descend to a preset height
Alan
One thing to watch out for is that it will descend at its home point and then stop at 60 feet and wait for 15 seconds... can be a bit unnerving when you wonder why it stopped!
yup just ordered mine..do alot of skiing and riding so cant waite to take it to the parking lots and the slopes..how is it in cold weather..if any ones ..
Lets us know how it performs in the snow!
hi guys, I have built an octo 6s with the Naza M V2.... So I assume all of your tips regarding the phantom versions will be the same as the M V2?
subscribed,
Hi Dizzychizzy,
I'm afraid we only deal with "straight out of the box" Phantoms, so I can't comment on if its all the same.
But please keep us updated with your Octo6 progress for our blog!
I plan to fly over a cliff so wanted to check this, have you tried resetting home position in the air over start point to add extra height to the failsafe, manual suggests it would then use that initial height plus 20m so could be a good option in high obstacle terrain.
I am unclear as to why you would want to set a new home position in the air?
Why not just set it where you are standing..?
I'm not sure if understand correctly
HypervisionAustralia To increase failsafe height to avoid obstacles/tree's, if you reset home position at 30M, failsafe height will then be 30+20M so 50M, so you can be assured return home will clear obstacles - I used this at the weekend and it works perfectly. Also useful if you are hand launching having set home position on lower ground.
Thanks ! now I know .. I tried to switch off my control & I panicked cuz my drone flew up hi ... Glad I viewd ur channel ! God Bless
It will only fly to 60 feet by itself. So be careful around trees etc
thanks again !! God Bless
I am thinking of getting a phantom vision but i wish they had fitted a similar thing like the i phone has where you could locate it if you lose it as i have seen loads of fly aways on youtube .
We will be dedicating a segment to "fly aways" in March. We think they are 99% avoidable! There are also plenty of GPS trackers or FPV units to watch your phantom or see where it goes.
So what would happen if you were on a hill/mountain/peak, and you were flying 'BELOW' your take off point (in a valley for example) and you lost signal?
MrSky084 It will go to the return to home altitude (default 66 feet) and then fly home. So if you were flying in a valley 100 feet below your takeoff point, it would ascend to 166 feet and fly home. If you are flying at 150 feet above take off point, it will remain at the height while returning home and then descend and land.
Can you regain control when your phantom is on his way back home? Happened to me yesterday and it landed safely but I couldn't control it when it came back in range.
Hi Denis, Yes you just use the right hand switch and click into centre position, you then will have control back.
But you must ensure Phantom lights have returned to green first, otherwise it hits the deck!
You can then return the switch to normal operation once you have control back
Which one would you prefer: is it better to buy - Phantom 2 with Zenmuse gimbal (I've got Pro3+) or Phantom 2 Vision? All happy DJI users - please let me know what you are thinking? Thx
Hi Roberto -
I am not experienced (yet); but I chose to go with the Phantom 2 w/the Zenmuse gimbal and GoPro Hero3+ Black edition. The reason why I decided against the Vision is because I wanted the flexibility to switch out cameras; and I think with the Zenmuse gimbal you get better stabilization given the reviews I have seen.
Every thing arrives next week, so I'll try to remember and come back and give you better feed back and maybe a link to a youtube video of the footage.
Thank you!!! I think about flexibility for switching in future. But would it be difficult just to take off Vision camera? and instal something else - I wonder. Thx
I think I'm going to make decision this weekend - I need it for May - have to practice first ;)
Not Bad. What's the price range. Also, what's the maximum controller range or distance. Also, what's the Maximum Controller Height. Finally, How is the machines Pitch and Yaw performance under conditions like Wind, Rain, Snow, and Cold Weather. Or any combination of the before mentioned...
Thanks I'll wait for reply...
Hi there, There's plenty of good info about all this on the internet available.
We tend to focus on the things that aren't in the manuals or spec sheets.
Also look at the DJI Web Site
I have just purchased a phantom 2. And I was flying it when he suddenly flew home by itself like in the video. (mine was a few blocks away) But I was right next to it with the remote. Could this happen when the battery is getting low??
MiniB
Hi There! With the new software, yes! It will just pack it in and fly home with only 10 seconds warning (which is annoying) Also if it runs out of range it will also just fly home after a few seconds. Hope that helps!
That does. Thanks alot :)
I want the phantom 2
can you start posting in 720??
Beware about using thread lock with the phantom
Don't kill your DJI Phantom
can failsafe be adjusted? as what you say is wrong.. I have video footage of the phantom entering failsafe mode, lowering to around 60ft and then trying to go home.. but never made it
chris digata
Please tell me more!
Also the new software update changes everythingwww.flightofthephantom.com/#!firmware-notes/cpke
I dont use a phone as Im running phantom 2 z-gimbal and gopro .. and as i said the phantom lost signal and i also lost video as using a vid trans system.. the phantom then lowered to around 60ft , spun around and whet to fly home and crashed into trees... it did not stay at the height of 40m that i was flying at email chris@digata.co.uk HypervisionAustralia
chris digata
HI Chris, Something is wrong there, unless you have the new phantom where the fly home height can be preset. This can be changed in your phone app.
About setting the home point on top of a building :). What do you think would happen if the Phantom miss the building and decided to land lets say a few meters off the building edge. Would it switch off its motors once it gets on the level with the building's roof (even if there is many more meters of just air under it) or would it continue descending until it would reach the actual ground (street). I presume that if it only knows the relative altitude from the take off, it would probably swith off while in the air and crash :) but I really wonder if I am not underestimating it :).
Hi Lukas,
It would go all the way to ground and land smoothly!
HypervisionAustralia
Hope I will never have to try it :). Do you know, how that is achieved? Or do I have some serious misunderstanding of altitude measuring? :).
HI Lukas, Have a look at our BLOG, I think one subscriber explains what happens in detail
Damn, you already did the test :) I did not noticed that. So now it is one less experiment, that I can do :( :D. Thank you very much, learned a lot :).
Hi
I Need help
How can I change the
Vertical height in the failsafe more than 20 meter
For NAZA-M V2 in the DJI NAZAM Assistant ?
Would suggest looking at DJI Manuals for this information
HypervisionAustralia thank you for your replay :)
no solution in the DJI Manuals For NAZA-M V2 :(
my best regards
ok sorry about that. There are plenty of good forums that discuss software configuration, but I'm afraid we limit our info to straight out of the box.
Also see our links page

Hey weer2012, great question! I'm desperately needing to know the same thing. Did you find an answer? I live around allot of tall trees that I really don't want to run into while in failsafe mode.
good video. though it does tell you this in the manual.
HI There, As far as I am aware, it does talk about the 60 feet, but not the extra height you can fly at. But if I am wrong would be keen to see the info .... always keen to learn
HypervisionAustralia sorry for the late reply, here is the dji pdf link
download.dji-innovations.com/downloads/phantom/en/PHANTOM_Quick_Start_Manual_v1.7_en.pdf on page 14, figure 5 is illustrates the different modes. including the one you are referring to.
Thanks for the link. I have no idea why peoples replies don't show up!
I had a look and kinda see what you mean, but less than clear
But good information, thanks for sending it through.
I cant get the Phantom 1 to rotate the blades?
Elgin Laib
I don't understand sorry?
I get the green light on the Phantom but I can't get the propellers on the Phantom to rotate.?
Elgin Laib
Have you solved the problem yet?
I have had this problem before... I think from memory its when you turn the controller on after the Phantom and it cant find it
yes problem solved. operator error

Im absolutley gutted to think i could of had a warranty etc.....
Theres actually one listed on ebay usa that was found intact on a car park after RTH?? wtf
this shit is sick my nigga
And what when you start from a boat while drifting? "safe" home return? lol blub blub blub
funny!!! We are filming a segment about this at the moment!!
HypervisionAustralia Nice, I hope you can post the video before 11 juni of this year, because then I go to Norway. ( I am from Holland )
Hope to have it online late next week
HypervisionAustralia Nice, look forward to it ;)
We hope to have this video launched Monday
The tests were a little different than we expected
Excellent coverage of an important topic. The DJI logic that an aircraft should always automatically fly UP to avoid an obstacle during failsafe RTH is fundamentally flawed as evidenced by this video ua-cam.com/video/x--dX808aEc/v-deo.html and supported by your comment, "..what happens if there's a tree or building in the way?"
The fact that a pilot can customize the RTH altitude feature is an acknowledgement that different circumstances require different handling.
The problems are easy to address with a firmware upgrade which could include the following (note that I am writing about v 1.3.20 which was released in Aug 2015):
(1) The current RTH Altitude options are limited between 20-500M. 20m (65 feet) is too high to be the minimum altitude in certain situations. Solution: lower the minimum altitude range.
The max altitude of 500m (1,600+ feet) violates FAA regs in many parts of the US. I've not tested this to see how this interacts with the setting that auto limits altitude to 400 feet. Solution: Make sure the the airspace regs override the setting and provide user feedback during entry if there is a conflict.
(2) The current RTH Altitude options permit an entry of "0" which can lead one to believe it would not ascend. Why else would it accept the input? Solution: Field validation on input and clearer on screen feedback to prevent incorrect assumptions.
(3) You will note from the flight data in the video that once RTH was engaged the aircraft actually veered further from the home point, else it would have cleared the tree canopy at 60+ feet. Solution: Investigate and resolve.
(4) The accompanying aircraft video footage clearly shows me manually bringing the aircraft towards the home point in a safe and controlled manner. It was at 6.6 feet when the failsafe suddenly took control away from me. While this may be by design, I submit that the logic is flawed. Common sense suggests that interrupting a pilot's active command of an aircraft is dangerous. Solution: #1 above and #5 below would address this. Additionally, change the software to seek permission from the pilot to take over.
(5) In the event a low battery RTH is triggered and the pilot is locked out of manual control (presently when below 20m), there needs to be a quick and easy way to override the rapid ascent. In my scenario, the aircraft rose 6.6 feet per second. Solution: Joystick control should automatically override the ascent.
Hope this makes sense. Happy and safe flying!
warning do not down load dji firmware 4.02 it dosn;t work with the phantom one
it causes lose of power on take off and transmiter loses comunication at short distances and dji dosn;t offer a downgrade to fix this problum so your screwed
