I've been involved in RC since I was a kid and honestly I've never felt I've had so much control over a aircraft like I do my Phantom 2 Vision. Sure there's always risk of a flyaway but I agree with the other post......if you setup the phantom correctly and follow the correct steps to calibrating everything you should have no trouble. As with anything RC though you've got to understand that there's always a chance for interference. Fly smart! Have fun!

I don't own one of these yet- MicBergsma has me sold and I will, but a streamlined basic diagnostic-chart CARD that fits in your pocket would help if you don't do that already. i.e. Fly's in a circle→compass calibration. Control Loss→Switch top right switch to center (attitude mode). Stops and Hovers every 10 seconds→too close to power lines and Cell towers. Stuck in fail safe→unplug and replug battery. Fly's forward-left→calibrate compass. Takes off in one direction→update firmware. etc.

Yesterday I had a fly away occur and it was terrifying!
You loose complete control and all you could do is watch it leave.
In panic I switched my controler off hoping to activate its return feature.
It flew for a few more seconds and simply stopped in mid air at around 700feet away and 350 ft up. Then it slowly returned home.
I can't imagine what caused this but I thanked God for that failsafe you guys coded into the Phantom!! Very well done!
Love my Phantom and hope to keep it for years to come.

I was skeptical about buying a phantom after reading about all the fly away issues but 99% of the issues I read about really seem to come down to pilot error. I went ahead and took the risk, got the phantom version 1.1.1 with the NAZA M2. I do feel DJI could update their info on the setup process on their website but after gathering the details, I was able to perform the assembly, firmware update, compass & IMU calibration, and have had several successful flights. The return to home feature also works. At this point, I now feel most of the negative feedback comes from people who simply did not follow the procedures properly. If you do the necessary research, you should immediately be able to tell if the phantoms components are working correctly or not, even before the first flight.

I've owned my Phantom 2 Vision Plus for about three months now. I followed the instructions and did the updates on the firmware before flight and I've never had an issue. Follow the directions and even if it is your IMU it's not a big deal folks, calibrate it.. The customer service has been awesome and Tony in Florida is a great guy and a huge help, they need more like him. I crashed the Phantom into a tree (on accident) and it dropped from forty feet give or take. Besides a few broken props and it needed a bit of straitening, it's like it never crashed. It's a great tool to add to any photographers tool set or any hobbyist even. My two kids love it and it gets us outside and into nature and even into video editing as well.. Thank you Colin and DJI, great job.

Appreciate the description of firmware fix, but I wonder if/why you couldn't include an intermittent control code with the controller's signal - basically a heartbeat saying "hi, its really me, controller #32165798", and if say that control is sent on average 3-times every 10-seconds - then if the drone doesn't receive that code at all within say 20-seconds it'll know its not you talking to it.

Would be great if there was GPS in the controller and that fed to the copter before take off. THAT could be "home". And it would also be great if the user can verify first that the controller obtained the right location (ie. google maps, manual entry, etc). Seems like that would help. Thoughts?

OMG…I found my DJI Phantom Quad Coptor today. It was 150 to 200 yards away from where I launched it. Lost on Jan 29th. Found on Feb 2nd. Unbelievable. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Landed upright with no damage. It was just resting there. My Prayers were answered.

I love the Phantom 2, a great platform and extended flight time! If you perform a checklist prior to flight, issues like flyaway can be eliminated. Don't get me wrong, my first Phantom would take off and it took me awhile to understand the importance of compass correction and such. I may be on the upset panel soon as I am ready to use the ground station and operate waypoints. Once the FAA gets their cramp together I am going full commercial "Last Shadow" is around the corner! Thanks DJI!

What Colin and DJI has done here is simply brilliant and fantastic.. How to avoid DJI Phantom Fly-Away by Colin Guinn
I also wrote to several quad manufactures as well as DJI and Blade a number of weeks ago..about my concerns about what happens around congested invisible Wi Fi Hot Spots and saturated 802.11g in central city locations and cell phone towers and the instant disconnection and erratic uncontrollable flight that occurs and the high impact crash that follows. DJI was very proactive and confirmed the situation and the response is so professional..Go DJI Phantom..BUUUTT Let the buyer beware with the Blade 350QX is very unsafe to operate in a congested WiFi area it instantly becomes disconnected from the transmitter and flys up and loops uncontrollably then simply destroys itself in seconds as it crashes to the ground at high speed. The Blade 350 QX does not have the ability of any firmware updates, it is very poorly shielded from Wi Fi and they have already been forced to issued a safety bulletin regarding Wi Fi interface from the Go Pro Video stream ..this is only half the story..The Quad industry will be heavily over regulated because of the cowboy approach taken by Blade with their reaction to my documents simply saying that hidden inside the super fine print in the warranty section it say not to fly it near people or magnetic fields..Plus key spare parts for the repair of the BLADE 350 QX Quad are back ordered 2 months ... Comments please
PS A hot tip to help you - download an app called WiFi Analyzer play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer
Several are available for either your I Phone and Android and you will quickly see the 100% congestion levels if it is maxed out avoid flying your quad there a crash is extremely possible..Safe and happy flying for all

If you start to experience a flyaway, try these steps:
    1. Switch to Atti. mode
    2. Switch to Manual mode (if previous step did not work)
    3. Switch off Controller (If other steps did not work)
This should help you regain control

Re the signal interference - why don't you get round this by using either encryption or an md5 # and junking any messges that don't decrypt / or # correctly before going into failsafe ? If you used encryption, it would also not be possible for anyone else to hijack your Phantom.

I have a DJI Phantom 2 vision and I luv it, I had to do one calibration when I first bought it and I have not had to install an update the Phantom fly's great.
I have noticed on occasion on the screen of my cell it'll say NEEDS COMPASS CALIBRATION but it will go away after I link up with the satellite and all the lights on the Phantom are green and good to go.
I'm kind of concerned about installing updates, every time I hear that someone installed an update they had troubles and I REALLY don't need TROUBLES.
I'm the kind of guy that think's IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT, I'm having a wonderful time with my Drone and getting really great shot's.
So do I dare ask this question? DO I NEED TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT NOT UPDATING ?
Does where I live have anything to do with me not having any issues or needing to update?
I live in the BEAUTIFUL state of COLORADO ( Mile High ).
Please let me know DJI personnel or anyone who knows about these things.
    Thanks Bill

i can explain it to you. 1st. without a good home point. failsafe will not work.
if you fly the phantom close to the ground, behind trees or whatever and you loose connection with the phantom, or something happens. the phantom will go up 20 meters from ground level. ground level is the hight the homepoins is set. if you are on top of a building and fly down and loose signal. it will climb 20 meters above where you started it. now. 20 meters above groundlevel if its unders 20 meters of hight. if you fly higher, it will stay at the last recorded hight on its way back to the homepoint. soo its always a good idea to fly high above trees and buildings just in case.. any more questions?

I don't know if this makes any sense, but why is the stronger signal interference problem being dealt with a "No input/No human" passive-fail detection approach?
Why not the opposite, an active-fail dectection routine written into the software?
It would constitute of an identification pulse from the control embedded into the signal and sent, say each 15 seconds or preceding every execute/command transmission. If another signal, no matter how strong, was missing that ID, the Phantom would then consider it a non-valid one and enter the "return home" mode.
    Wouldn't this be possible?

My Phantom 1.1.1 with 4.02 firmware repeatedly loses GPS lock only when the GoPro Hero 3 is attached and on/filming. WiFi is off on the GoPro. Turn the GoPro on: loses GPS. Turn it off: GPS comes back. You guys need to look into EMI produced by an RF leak on the GoPro cameras as I bet that accounts for at least some of the fly aways. I've wrapped the GoPro waterproof case in foil tape to try to minimize the problem: have yet to test/confirm whether that helps though. Thought I'd mention it though: turn the GoPro on and let the Phantom sit for a couple minutes to be sure your green light on the Phantom keeps blinking and no red. Mine goes red as soon as you turn on the GoPro! Or worse... it might blink green for a while making you think everything is OK but when you start flying, it goes red. So at a minimum, do all your pre-flight checks with the GoPro on and filming because if you don't start it right away, you might not know there's a problem.

Thanks for this. I lost my P2v+ on Saturday (brand new) and thought I followed all the instructions. HOWEVER a subtle difference. The calibration, second step, the way you turn/twist the P2v+. Hold it vertical and you turn 360 not twist the P2v+ 360 degrees vertically!
    Am I right?

Oh no.. I just pre ordered a Phantom 2, and now I read/heard a lot of issues.. At first I'm planning to buy the Walkera QRX 350 Pro, and I've watch a lot of videos here on YT about the two quads, there's a review he got both the 350 Pro and the Phantom 2, he also stated that he likes the 350 Pro than the Phantom 2, some videos also did duel test about all the features like gps hold etc etc. Obviously the 350 Pro won majority of the videos, but in the end I still ordered the Phantom 2.

The Walkera has a ~8min flight time.(from other youtuber) That is not a lot. I have (15m+3m)18 min total with gimbal and 26 min total with no gimbal. The software updates on the P2 are up to date and it's 100% worth it!

I've had my FC40 for a week, it's a great machine the range on the fpv works for the things I video, but I did buy a wi-fi extender that helps the range and signal of the FC40 wi-fi camera to keep from dropping at 300 feet. I bought an SR10000 and a couple high gain antenna's and power it off a spare phantom battery, it costs less than 50 dollars because amazon sells refurbished units. But most my video is less than 300 feet. Keeping your camera charged up helps as well, plus I have an 808 #16 720 p wide angle key chain cam that records sound I velcro to the back of my FC40 to get sound, and two viewing angles.

I posted on one of your other video's and spoke with your Twitter person, but he/she didn't point me here.
This video provides part of the answer for the Phantom Vision 2. Unfortunately the "is it human" function didn't quite work last time I had a control issue and instead of returning home it just hovered and would not respond to controls.
I've been using the phantom 2 to cover some of the Thailand political protests - which I admit is a extreme working environment with thousands of smartphones in a small area.
The Vision 2 went out maybe 80m & 30m high. Then no control. No lost signal message. Remained hovering and wouldn't respond. It did the stop and hover, but not the come home. It just kept hovering over the mob. In desperation I turned-off the controller and it started to return, flicked S1 down and regained control.
Unsure if it was government cell phone blocking or because of so many smartphones. Only happened the once.
Will check the firmware. Would a larger antenna on the controller help?
Bit concerned over poor visual feed, frozen / broken signal, but need to do some tests in less trying conditions. Great quality photos on the Phantom vision 2. Adds a great perspective to what is taking place. Image handling software needs a bit of work, ie, batch transferring capability, sharing.
Cuts down the amount of tear gas I end up inhaling and keeps me away from the mob and bullets, so very useful!.

Thank you Mitch for asking the question a lot of people have been wondering about and wringing their hands over. And thank you Colin for setting the record straight. Sounds to me like DJI has done everything within their power to address this situation, especially with the software update that looks for anomalies in flight behavior. What DJI cannot do is babysit those who are too lazy to do their part, in other words, calibration of your Phantom and observation of your surroundings. Personally I've never had a problem. If this video doesn't appease the naysayers, then perhaps you should stick with flying an airplane on a string.

Hi, thx for the info, but I have a very important question, I go every year to Norway for sea fishing, and I am considering to buy a phantom for filming us in the boat, but the boat is allways drifting, so when I start the phantom from the boat, and somehow something goes wrong, then the phantom goes land where the boat was, but the boat drifted maybe 50 meters away, so it will land into the water.
    How to deal with this???

    • @nycdrones

I wanna film my boat underway, I'm fitting foam floats and will lean to fly it without GPS. Isn't the GPS the cause of fly aways or not?

    • @1grinnbareit
      @1grinnbareit 10 років тому

If you can fix foam to the Phantom so it doesn't interfere with the camera or not add more weight, that would be cool, but foam adds weights and interferes with aerodynamics, wasting battery power. I fly over water all the time, got to check battery voltage before every flight and use a timer so you know when your batteries will run down!

    • @GranVlog

    Hey Colin,
I've had a pretty bad experience with the customer service in LA. I mean it was near horrific. Anyways. I got my p2v+ back, and a couple of days ago. What you are describing happened to me, except I couldn't gain control. And it crashed on a 3rd story roof of an apartment complex near my house. Luckily the kids in my area know that it was mine, and came and got me, and actually climbed the roof to get my quad back for.me. One of them even when into poison ivy to get my camera. (it detached from the gimbal, again). One of my propellers is not budging off of the motor. And that motor looks pretty tore up. The body is cracked, luckily the battery doesn't seem to have any damage. Zach and Daniel were the ones who solved my issues last time, but I can't seem to get a hold of them. Do i really have to go thru the customer service experience again? cause it was really really bad!

I have a phantom and when I received it, it did not have an owners/operators manual. I am not sure as to the use of the switches and the combinations of the way the switches can be set. I have flown mine and have to say It is awesome. But I am very Leary when it come to "fail safe". Do you have any documentation I can get that will help me improve my flying experience?

This is great stuff, you guys are the best !!! To share knowledge, is to share power, got to believe Happyness with these kinds of equipment brings hardship when having issues.... due to accidental miss-haps and the like. Recovery is the goal, but how to get there is half the battle !!!! Keep up the great work, Be inn-venting, Be safe.....and more importantly SHARE your skills !!!! Thankx for your time.

That's pretty crazy that random rf noise can be interpreted as control signals. Is there no radio ID to make sure that the received signal belongs to the bound transmitter?

    • @KolUtShan
      @KolUtShan 10 років тому +1

That is just their lame excuse, A bound 2.4ghz has a unique ID and the signal is a two way street. It is much safer than the old 72 mhz.

I just had my second flyaway yesterday (I got lucky the first time when it crash landed nearby) and now my F-450 with the NAZA-M1, BG and a GoPro are long gone miles away from here for all I know. Ironically I had just watched this video days before the flyaway happened and I would religiously and patiently follow all of these recommendations to a T. But none of these pre-flight precautions were able to stop the flyaway as it actually happened. I think some interference probably hijacked my transmitter signals and made it fly away straight in one single direction at full throttle. There was no response upon switching modes or activating the fail-safe switch. IOC was off. I had at last hoped that the "Receiver Advanced Protection" feature would kick in and bring it home but that did not happen as advertised. As of now I am not confident any longer to go and buy another NAZA flight controller. I think if something out there is capable of hijacking my signal and blocking me from sending some sort of failsafe command to the FC, then we are all at a loss for when (not if) it happens. So long DJI. Thanks MicBergsma channel for the outlet and sharing your love for the hobby. Your channel rules.

Hey Colin! I was on a party today and spent a night before upgrading my Phantom V2 with Zenmuse, arms extenders and iOSD. That was a charm test fly in the garage. But on party, after some beers, I stupdily forgot to calibrate compass before fly...so that's exactly what happened! Everything is lost, no one part is umbroken. Didn't remember to turn ATTI mode on neither turn TX off! So sad. And, there is some Customs barriers for GPS sistems imports (also Phantoms) to Brazil. Is that true? What we can to drible this?

Kind of your loss. I have dozens and dozens of flights on my Phantom and the only issue that I have ever had with it was something I caused myself. The Phantom is a lot of fun to fly and the people that have had fly away issues have obviously had something going on that they did not address in pre-flight.

Not my loss. I fly MultiWii and ArduPilot controllers. They can do everything the top level commercial DJI controllers do at 1/10th the price and with more flexibility. You NEVER hear about flyaways with those systems.

What happens when Course Lock direction and Home Lock point will no longer responds and randomly the Phantom decides to full on flyaway in atti1. for some seconds. There are no shops here and my shortest hold time for dji has been 1 hour and 31 minutes. I've received 3 separate Case Numbers, but noone follows through, Jeez...Case request 1388, 2584, and the last 2753.

I never had a problem with the phantom 1 or an older phantom 2. my phantom 2 plus less than 10 days old has been nothing but problems. flyaways, erratic flying, and flying highspeed right into the ground. DJI is the worst company, worst technical support, doesn't support or honor any warranty. they don't even honor their own authorized dealers or service centers. This whole firmware bs is nothing but crap. the firmware is garbage. the dealer is finally replacing my p2v+ with a new one, only after they heard the phone call with DJI totally scolding me, mouthing them, etc. they are dealing with dji hong kong directly now. also the supervisor lied to me and told me that p2v+'s do not have fly away issues. period. DJI is a poor excuse of a company (at least the LA Office, Agent 08 and his little supervisor.) record everything with this company.. DO NOT TRUST THEM

Some old dude was asking me questions while I was trying to fly fpv with my fatshark goggles and got me distracted (next time tell them I cant talk till I am on the ground) and clipped a tree and got it stuck. After the rescue I checked it out and it looked ok only the mount for the gimbal was bent a bit. Thought I would see if it was still running.. I fired it up let it sit, lights went green and props where turning.. I lifted it off the ground and it zoomed off with no control till it hit a small tree and fell into the river about 5ft deep.. only a week old:( I tried to cut the motor and control it but nothing.. Have pulled all the parts off it and put what I could into bags with rice to draw the moister out.. Any idea why it took off? No interference before clipping the tree.. Could the bump of done something? obviously I will have to recalibrate the compass and such but not sure if that's the only thing... Thoughts??

Alright, I was all set up and was excited to buy a Phantom 2, but after I heard about all these flyaways, I'm kinda scared. That's a lot of money for something I think I could lose really easily. Does anyone have a lot of experience with the quad and could they tell me if I should be worried about this? I have looked at most of the other quad choices, and I've heard they have other issues. They just don't seem as well made. Basically, I want to know if I'm going to have to be really nervous whenever I fly this thing.

People take heed if you are going to buy one of these, even if you follow all the steps properly, it is a machine and is subject to malfunction. I bought one about 6 months ago, already had a GoPro hero 3 black, and in February bought the zenmuse gimbal. I am a very cautious flyer as I see it as $1,400 of my money in the sky, and last week, I did all the preflight checks, had all green lights for 15-20 secs before takeoff to set home point, took off as normal and my Phantom shot into the sky without any additional stick input never to be seen again. I absolutely love the Phantom and the shots it gets, I have a few on my page, but after a heartbreaking experience like the one I just had, I'm kind of weary of investing that much money again on a Phantom, gimbal, and GoPro. Always make sure you do every step, but prepare yourself if the unknown happens..... I still get a little misty eyed on a nice day that I could be flying but now can't. Still a great and fun product though.
