I have to share with you all, I was born in Mankato, MN. I’m a 3rd generation in the United States. Norwegian, Italian, and Irish. My parents told me the truth since I could remember. Our families were not here yet in the states. But our family empathizes with your families that endured such horrendous fate due to others. The hanging in Mankato is still scarred into the town. I grew up in DT Mankato. In 3rd grade specifically I remember seeing spirits and feeling so much darkness and sadness that I told my dad. That’s when he basically broke it all out to me and said look. Some white folks brutally murdered and stole from the Natives. So he told me not to be scared of the spirits they just want us to know the story. I’ll never forget this. Thank you for sharing your story. I could never in depth explain what you personally went through, just know that there are many that support you. ❤ I admire, respect, and honor all of you and your culture. 😊
Keep telling the story so that others know the true history. They don’t teach us in schools how corrupt this country is, I only knew because of my parents telling me 🙈 the whole thing was so inhumane. Like it’s disgusting to treat anyone like this. I feel you all deserve the best respect and love. Like idk how else to express my condolences on this matter. I will always share the story. The truth. Mankato is my home. The Minnesota river brings me to tears when I come back to MN to visit, I moved to SW Iowa a few years back. It was always a tradition for me to go to the land of memories pow wow for my birthday 9/21
I miss them. 🥺🙈 I will be back home by the River this Sept. I hope I can see the tradition of the powwow again this year. Love you all so much and thank you for sharing the truth to us all. ❤

I watched this over and forgot that they showed a picture of my great grandma Martina Medicine. I wish I could have known her like I knew my great grandpa William Miller Sr. It has warmed my heart to see her today, I've been dealing with racism all morning and it was very comforting to see this.

Thank you for posting. A powerful, moving documentary with a heartbreaking scene at 1:05-6 and the ending regarding Billy Ray & the others. No doubt, the pain is great but keep moving forward. What a wonderful way to commemorate those who lost their lives and to educate non-natives on the tragedies that occurred. It was good for the people of the communities to assist the rider and for the mayor of Mankato to declare Dec 26th Lakota Reconciliation Day. It's a start! The truth is starting to come out and to be heard.

I watched this film after visiting my sister in Minnesota. She took me to several of the sites involved in the movie and I wanted to know more. My great great grandmother hid in the corn fields during the uprising of 1862. She ended up on the Lake Traverse Rez. It took us 60+ years to find her. How sad this film is. As the elders leave this world, so do our reservation youth. They feel as hopeless as the Dakota leaders in 1862. Time for some new spiritual medicine from within our people. Thanks Jim Miller.

I'm leading a work trip for youth to South Dakota to help on reservations this summer. I've been doing all the reading and listening I can to understand what happened in history, what continues to happen today to drive such a deep wedge between Native Peoples and the U.S. I feel like I am finally starting to get the picture thanks to this documentary. It broke my heart open. I can't fully express the horror and grief I'm feeling on behalf of my white ancestors and in sympathy with all Native People. It's mixed with thankfulness and hopefulness that I see reflected in all the riders and everyone they met because Jim decided to listen to his dream. Thank you.

this journey is one brought to us by the Creator and no one else. Each rider especially ready for the challenge riding into the unknown, but through the entire ride, kindness can be seen everywhere, hearts are broken open with love and human understanding, the spirits of the riders are one with their Guiding Force. The young ones traveled many miles by horse but even further in their deep realization of where they were and what they were doing. Our prayers are with those who have gone home.

it broke my heart open, once again. It's a hard history, that must be recognized if we are to understand "how we got here from there," which is what I used to say to all my students in Native Studies; we had the privilege of having Snuneymuxw and Quw'utsun wise people present at all lectures to speak with & watch over them. This was absolutely integral to the Native Studies program because colonial history often causes more pain, unless there is also a healing with that learning. w/Thanks

Thank you. I have always loved horses. Horses on the other hand were in fear of me. It wasn't till my naming ceremony that I finally understood why. Our holy man explained that the horses only saw the wolf in me.(Wolf Clan) That is why they had always behaved that way around me. However, now that a name has been sent by our ancestors for me, the horses would see me as a brother. It is as he said...

Such a beautiful story. It is true that when we heal, our ancestors heal because we are carrying that intergenerational trauma in our genes. Our pain gets passed down. And also our happiness. Its time to heal be happy because we want to create a healthy gene to pass that down onto our children. Be happy. No one is stopping us from our relationship with the Universe any more. My auntie told me that there is an Awakening happening. I didn't understand her until now. This is a beautiful journey and just watching this is helping me to heal after I cried. This film reminded me why I feel in my heart what can only be described as pride. Though it is Native Pride! The true history of what this country did to our people is so heartbreaking and has carried over to each generation. I know and understand this PTSD that we all suffer from. The only remedy for it is love. Love yourself and love others, so others can love you.

This year the people on the east coast will remember Gus Higheagle and his life giving ride he made to Buffalo, Syracuse, Troy, New York and Newtown Conn, NYC and Danbury.with a wonderful stop in Woodstock. We honor this wonderful human being for his sacrifice. We are trying to figure out how we can travel to Menkato and be with the Dakota 38 riders. Any ideas?

OLD AGENCY VILLAGE - Seth Enoch Cloud-Chief Eagle, 18, made his journey to the spirit world on Dec. 17, 2008 due to sniffing compressed air (to clean computers). Seth died from "huffing" or "dusting". There are Hydrocarbons in aerosolized cans of computer cleaning products that kids use as a cheap and legal and untraceable way to get high that unfortunately can cause heart arrhythmias even in the young leading to sudden death. In one report I read that this practice is highly addictive, but, it only takes one time doing it to die. It was reported in a study done that 39% of first time users die. That is a very high number. Whether he was a repeated user or just tried it one time doesn't matter. It is a problem that affects many families in many walks of life and is cross-cultural. I am sad he is no longer with us. It is a great loss when the young are taken too soon.

I have looked and cannot find why Billyrae is no longer with us. It isn't really anyones concern but his family I suppose, but, after watching the film, of coarse I am curious and am sad because he was so young and it was not expected for someone so young to die. He seemed unhappy and troubled during the times this film captured him. I hope this was not indicative of his life as a whole. He deserved to have happiness in life. I hope that was the case.
