When I listen to his story today, he was a hero to me. The Civil War brought a lot of suffering to the people back then, but I think the South was hit hard and I don't think it has really recovered to this day. After the war was over, the South didn't really have much luck governing itself. The Union troops were still present for a very long time and the South just didn't have a lot of opportunities to restructure its own life. I probably wouldn't have thought and acted any differently. So let's not condemn the people who did what was the only way for them to survive at the time. And what a handsome man Jesse James was, so easy on the eyes! A great documetary! Well done

I lived in Northfield MN in the late 1980’s. The city takes great pride in the history of fighting back against the a James -Younger gang. The stores on mainstreet had racks of postcards next to the cash registers. These featured the closeup photos of the dead gang members, postmortem. Kind of gruesome. Every autumn the town has a big celebration, officially known as the Defeat of Jessie James Days. However, most people shorten it to Jessie James Days, as if they are celebrating the criminal.

It’s called the Joseph Lee Haywood award. I understand the sentiment and to be awarded a “person of the year” award is probably well deserved, but I always thought Joseph didn’t put enough value on his own life that fateful day.
My great grandpas, great uncle Thomas Archer, ran with the James Gang before having his own gang in Indiana. Him and his brothers were all hung by lynch mobs in southern Indiana in the 1880s. It’s said Thomas was there with them in Kentucky and a few other ones in that area!

I'm actually related Jesse James & I never knew that until I went to a James family reunion in Kentucky with my sister! I was shocked! I couldn't believe it!
As a Cherokee, my family history is tied to the history of my Tribe. I'm related to the last Confederate General to surrender, Stand Watie. He surrendered well after General Robert E. Lee signed the surrender agreement written by another Native man Ely S. Parker, who was a Seneca Indian Chief. I've always found it fascinating that two Native Americans were distinctly involved in the ending of the Civil War. Jesse James was a very unusual person. The involvement of the Pinkerton Detective Agency just added fuel to the fire of Jesse's hatred of Union forces. Quantrill was a brutal man who punished those seen as Unionists in horrific ways. Bloody Bill Anderson was the worst of the bushwhackers. His cruelty knew no bounds. Jesse's admiration of Bloody Bill Anderson was a terrible precursor of what was to come at Centralia. The events were appalling. I'm a Cherokee and a combat veteran who has witnessed terrible scenes in my combat experience. I spent 15 years around the world fighting and it's left me scarred, both physically and mentally, still, it's likely less terrible than what Jesse James went through. I have some empathy for the man. Though I have more empathy for my Native brothers and sisters who have been fighting since first contact with European colonizers.
The amazing thing is how he died. The story keeps being told how he died but truly the only ones to witness the actual event was the 2 ford brothers. No one else actually witnessed the shooting. How true was the actual event?

If you had read Cole Youngers book, Cole stated that before the gang was leaving for Minnesota, Cole and Jesse had a little argument, and the rest of the group went up to Northfield but Jesse and Frank stayed in Missouri. Also Jesse James did not swear or use foul language ever.

I'm actually related Jesse James & I never knew that until I went to a James family reunion in Kentucky with my sister! I was shocked! I couldn't believe it!

As a Cherokee, my family history is tied to the history of my Tribe.
I'm related to the last Confederate General to surrender, Stand Watie. He surrendered well after General Robert E. Lee signed the surrender agreement written by another Native man Ely S. Parker, who was a Seneca Indian Chief.
I've always found it fascinating that two Native Americans were distinctly involved in the ending of the Civil War.
Jesse James was a very unusual person. The involvement of the Pinkerton Detective Agency just added fuel to the fire of Jesse's hatred of Union forces.
Quantrill was a brutal man who punished those seen as Unionists in horrific ways.
Bloody Bill Anderson was the worst of the bushwhackers. His cruelty knew no bounds. Jesse's admiration of Bloody Bill Anderson was a terrible precursor of what was to come at Centralia. The events were appalling.
I'm a Cherokee and a combat veteran who has witnessed terrible scenes in my combat experience. I spent 15 years around the world fighting and it's left me scarred, both physically and mentally, still, it's likely less terrible than what Jesse James went through.
I have some empathy for the man. Though I have more empathy for my Native brothers and sisters who have been fighting since first contact with European colonizers.

The Northfield raid was wrong. If you had read Cole Youngers book, Cole stated that before the gang was leaving for Minnesota, Cole and Jesse had a little argument, and the rest of the group went up to Northfield but Jesse and Frank stayed in Missouri. Also Jesse James did not swear or use foul language ever.
