- This video is also posted on the lincolnsonline.com website. I clean the EGR channel on a 1995 Town Car.
To update the video the light came back on. I suspect I did not clean the channel good enough leading up to the intake. I will have to do it again. Unless someone has another suggestion. This should give you an idea of how to undertake the job
Well I should say this is an almost repair video because the light came back on. I suspect I did not clean the channel well enough. I got up enough courage to undertake this job after talking with a few guys on the forum. It should give you an idea of how to undertake the job.
Perhaps someone can explain the clogged port along the side of the intake device. You will see in the video. I guess I will have to undertake this job again and clean the tunnel leading up to the intake. That is the only thing I can think of that may be causing the light to come back on. I connected a big syringe with a hose attached to it and drew vacuum on the EGR diaphragm when the engine was idling I figured this would stall the engine but it did not even change the idle at all that is what is making me suspect I need to clean the tunnel better. Let me know what you think.
Video still going strong in 2022 you did a good job sir thank you for the information and the great vid. 📡👽🇺🇸 RUN!!! 94 TC ROLLING.
Man you missed a big part, way underneath that throttle body there’s a hole that comes (from the top portion of the foil gasket) all the way up to the outlet you saw that was super clogged….😳 there was much more needed to be clean. I took the whole thing off to do it right. Man was I glad I did😱😱😱😐
yes if the light is showing that code it very well can be the port being clogged but there is another culprit that will throw this code even after replacing the gr and cleaning the port and that would be the DPFE sensor and that is the sensor that reads the egr valve to let the computer know what is going on.
southernrebel69420 is this a costly fix?
On this model there are more channels in the throat of the throttle body not just under the plenum but there is a channel above it that he doesn't cover. The 91-93 only has the one channel for egr under the plenum
Thanks for this video. My daughter car has the same fault code.
On your car there are 3 ways to clear a fault code.
1. disconnect the battery for 5 mins.
2. cycle the ingnission switch 22 times.
3 clear it with a scan tool like you did.
LTC 1994.
How is it holding up for you friend?
@@latamorewilliams6443 I sold this car, but I know that new owner cleaned it few times
Great video, thanks for taking the time to put it all together. Got a 1997 TC, no CE light on yet, but definitely something going on with idle and acceleration after. warm up at 120k.
Had 2 of these, same year and model. The first Lincoln TC the "check
engine" light came on at 110,000. It was running fine so I ignored it.
One day I had some time so I cleaned battery terminals, hooked 'em
back up and the light stayed off for 3 days. Then it came back on
and stayed on til I sold the car at 402,000 miles. The next TC the
light came on & stayed on at 130,000. It just turned over 200,000
and the light is still on. It runs fine and gets 21mpg city/ 28 hiway.
I think they designed 'em that way to scare old people back into
the dealership 'til they bought a new car.
or they need to clean the egr and replace the pcv, which should be done every 50,000 miles, and the computer detected the pressure change from the egr pressure sensor! (which is what happened with mine, and i fixed the egr and pcv every 100k or so and the check engine light went off when i did it, everytime) instead of making assumptions and conspiracy theories, how about googling it for a change?
I just got a lincoln town car with 144000 and this egr problem. Shop was saying 100 something to install im going to try to do it myself. Thanx for the great vid
Had the exact same issue with my 95, I also had to change the dpfe sensor, it is bolted onto the back of the throttle body.
Like you video, thanks
been a mechanic for 30 yrs, ran into this problem, different application though. Good thing is! This Cuts right to the chase on exactly what I need to do
Very nice video. My lincoln has the same problem and almost exact mileage as yours when you shot this video (within 500 miles). Thank you for your guidance and sharing the experience. I will be tackling this one soon.
You can reset the code and keep the p0401 from popping up again by staying out of the throttle and driving real easy. First time you peg the gas peddle the ce light will come back on. Just in case you need a quick inspection it will give you a fighting chance. Then clean it out afterwards
I do not own a 95 Lincoln I have no idea How I got to this video but it was well done and I Thoroughly enjoyed this video
I enjoyed your video. Thanks! I cleaned the EGR channels on a 1995 Crown Vic with 155K miles I owned back in 2009. They were completely clogged with dark brown/black grimy tar junk just like yours. When I got it all put back together I started it and let it warm up. It was in the garage pointing out so got in, put it in drive and gave it a little gas as I normally would when pulling out. Before I could get my foot over to the brake pedal I was on the other side of the street going into my neighbors driveway (thank goodness there was no car present). At first I thought it was some sort of fluke so after gathering my wits I proceeded to take it for a spin. The car's acceleration turned from uneven and weak to smooth and very strong. You did not seem to comment about any gain in horsepower and I am wondering if any of your other readers experienced what I did. Maybe I inadvertently did something that fix another issue while cleaning the channels? Any thoughts? Now I own a 1997 Town Car that is sort of gutless and am thinking about cleaning my channels even though it is not throwing codes.
Robert Wells we need help on 1994 lincoln continental.
Thanks for the video. I just cleaned mine and the CE light went off. I have more brake pedal and the a/c door stopped thumping. My thanks.
@Upnorth9 Thank you for that comment about being in the same situation as I am right now. I would rather try to replace that sensor than to take all this apart again and try to clean tract again.
I cleaned the egr and replaced the dfes2 sensor but the check engine light came back on
Why didnt you delete it?
What makes the water goes into the water bottle when it run and stain out the tailpipe but it's not really hot it's a Marquis it's a 98 V8
1995 it's obd1 scanner
I think they change mid-year. To the newer plug I have people that are amazed at that during inspection. With mine.
Thanks for the tip on the putty. I hate these piece of shit designs, especially the retarded hose under the intake manifold that will pop at the worst time imagineable.
In May of 2009 with 94,000 I had to do mine. It was just about totally blocked. I didn't reset anything. I left things alone and the check engine light went off after about 160 miles. Now in August of 2016 the check engine light and the same code has come up again. I am at about 146,500. Seven years and about 52,000 (+) miles later I have to do it again.
hey where you got confused where those two lines hook up on the right side of the throttle body where does that hose on the bottom hook up it looks to lead over to the egr
The fan belt tensioner most likely. I have a video about that also
Was your car running rich af blowing black smoke before you cleaned it 🤔
Great video, detailed HOW TO, I'm having same problem with my 95 Crown Victoria. Well do and post results.......Thanks
great video, i have the same issue on my 1995 t-bird 4.6 and need to do the same thing that u did on that lincoln....i will use this video as a reference......
@queentk1 What's the actual code you're getting? blocked EGR will cause the car to run rough, hesitate, stall and will normally give you a CEL when decelerating. It shouldn't cause problems with shifting.
thank you great video.
Did this on 93 Crown Vic a month ago and my check engine light has not came back on.
I gave you a thumbs up because i have a feeling this is one of your first videos, but if you were experienced, this would have been a thumbs down. Through all the shaky quick changing movements of your camera NOT ONCE did you say the EGR is held on by one nut in the back, and then you tilt it around a metal hook flange on the opposite side of the nut after disconnecting the wire. THE ENTIRE TIME not mentioning how to take off the part you took off, kinda fundamental to the point of the video wouldn't you say? that being said, thank you for posting, though your confusing presentation wasted an hour of me trying to figure things out (why you removed the throttle body is still confusing to me) on the internet when i should have just started working under the hood (you don't have to mess with the throttle body at all to work on the EGR btw), the fact that you made a presentation at all got me (eventually) to a clean EGR on my Lincoln town car! so thank you!
Hello sir you did a good job with this video. I have a 93 Lincoln Town Car signature. And I'm having e e g r valve problems it says low voltage high voltage on the scan machine. I'm going to now do what you just did but I have one question the part you took ouch that had the full bolts was it EGR attached to it?
Hey there thanks for the video , I also have a 95 town car with the same issue but what I did is that I removed the intake manifold completely I sand blasted the manifold repainted, clean & repainted the engine block, put new gasket, new thermostat, clean the fuel injectors, clean the radiator and now my car is running like a beast, thanks you very much it help me a lot.
on minute 5:25 what us the name of the Green hose line?
Hi I have a 94-- was your throttle plate normally that clean or dos u clean it ? and mine says not to clean it because of a some kind of coating -should I not clean even though it's black? Would a throttle cleaner actually damage something?
Replace an EGR valve or any of the components will not add any performance value the EGR valve merely takes off a segment of exhaust Andre Burns it it doesn't do anything else if you're experiencing increased timing maybe increase power you may have a vacuum line that you forgot increase vacuum increase timing increase exhaust increase RPM
Hey how are u I have the same year car almost same miles same code I was wonder did that code ever went away let me know?
A couple of things number one. That is a 1993 Lincoln Town Car. Number two what you're working on is the throttle body not the EGR valve. The EGR valve is located just under the throttle body on the left hand side of it. It's round it with a small pipe that comes from the bottom of it that has two bolt holes in a bracket
Its a 1995 look at the headlights , plus I had title for the car. Here look at al of these 1993 headlightswww.carsforsale.com/1993-lincoln-town-car-for-sale-C121272
Quick question...I have a 92 Lincoln town car and mine is also throwing codes, did your car run a specific way at times before you repaired the issue?
You have to clear the code yourself
Sir i have two questions for you i have a 1996 Lincoln Towncar. My car is chirping from the driving belt but the belt is Brand New what do you think it is? How do you get your Compass to work.
What the name of that gasket ?
An EGR error message Flo message could not only be blocked but the tube could be broken as in my case this is a horrific job I'm two minutes into your video I'm going to have an ulcer excuse me I'm going to puke
Ford is why I hate working on cars, why would you bury the EGR valve behind the engine, just dumb engineering.
Dealers got to make money too don't you want those poor guys to work make a
I hear ya 🤦 Same with the O2 sensors good luck trying to unplug them 😤
The DPFE sensor that's Square aluminum bodied thing with the electric plug and vacuum lines going off of it samples rate of flow sensor code this is what detects a problem mine was clogged and the weld broke you have a mess you have not recognize that yet you have about six vacuum lines various sizes seven or eight Clips clamps klax doodles that need to be disconnected and the throttle body is almost impossible to work free Andy not and the nut at the base of the tube in the exhaust manifold almost impossible to reach this is an impossible job while you're in there I would suggest replacing what makes sense take the EGR solenoid apart there'll be a little grommet in their shapes like a little barrel of oil little tiny barrel turn it upside down put it back in put it back together DPFE should be okay suck on the EGR valve see if the diaphragm holds air otherwise replace it if it blows through check the tube you've done all this work for nothing if you broke the tube
Cleaned mine and the light came back on. Turns out not only was it a clog. The EGR line coming from the valve has busted.
MendotaTech oh no! Mine was cleaned by my mechanic and light just came back on! :(
Great video thank you
