I told a friend of mine that His 92 camaro just needed some TLC which means tender love and care and he went to autozone and asked the clerk for some TLC and they all looked at him like he was nuts
Thanx Scotty! As a retired auto mechanic now selling Auto Parts and handing out repair advice I've suggested this to many of my customers and shown them how to do it. Most of the time they come back doing virtual cartwheels saying "Thank you so much! You've saved me $75!" That makes for repeat customers!
They spent half that in gas $ instead just buyn part and installing hiself not long after i bet he bought egr why risk motor damage over 75or150$ called matainence stop bein tite asses lol
You sound a lot like me. Passed my wrenches down to my sons and starting selling parts. I sell people the gaskets and a can of carb or TB cleaner and tell them how to clean it. $20 vs. $200 always gets them
I had my EGR valve replaced by a mechanic, but it was defective. he refused to replace it, and I wasn't about to pay another mechanic to do it. So I replaced it myself. But I'm adding this video to my favorites, so that I can learn to keep this EGR valve clean and functioning well for years.
Took my '94 dodge colt to 2 different professionals who couldn't diagnose why the car was running poorly. I started doing some googling and youtubing... thought clogged egr sounded right. Man that thing had chunks of carbon coming out... ran like a top after that. Learned something about my car and " professional " mechanics
Pep boys billed me $100 for an hour diagnostics... they got it to run a little better for a little while. Come to find out they did that by fully advancing the distributor/timing. My neighbor who worked at an indie shop did not charge me... he swore it was a temp sensor. I only own rwd redblock volvos now and diy what needs done... very simple cars to work on.
You really don’t want to soak the EGR valve upside down - that diaphragm is made from material, not metal, and the carb cleaner or solvent can actually destroy that. It may also be a good idea to try to clean the passages that you see, when the EGR valve is off the car, as carbon can block those passages as well.
I love your channel, and all of your videos Scotty. Lately I've watched the "EGR cleaning" video and the "clamp for radiator hoses" videos. I always learn so much here. I don't want to spend oodles of cash at the shop when I can do most of this myself, and having mostly older vehicles (1990 F250 XLT, 1998 Nissan Sentra [insert sad face here], 2000 Mazda Protege) I would be spending more than just oodles to get them running decently again. I'm getting a bit more comfortable tackling larger repairs, and I wanted to thank you for making these jobs a little easier to handle. Keep up the good work and REV THOSE ENGINES!
On this particular V6 Toyota engine that he's working on, the old 3VZE (which I have) also exists the EGR probe (~6" long) which goes inside the intake plenum next to the EGR. That should be removed and cleaned as well as it gets corroded with deposits. And as you will see, there is also the EGR Modulator in front of the EGR which looks similar in that it has a round top. The EGR Modulator has 3 vacuum hoses (P, Q, R). There is a small disc-shaped filter in the top of this unit and it should be removed and cleaned out. Other things to look for in this smog system are the PAIR reed valve unit (further behind and lower from EGR), the Evap "charcoal" cannister on rear left fender, and lastly, check the inlet / oulet temps of the Catalytic converter with a laser thermometer which should be ~80 to 100 degrees in difference for a working cat If under 75, the cat is on its way out.. If under 50..replace it! Replacing the oxygen sensor down there is also not a bad idea. Those are all the main smog items on this engine.
Alright, finally took my EGR out to clean it after a few months of resetting the Check Engine light. OMG, it was dirty!! Black, black, black liquid came out after every spray for many sprays. And many wipes covered in black carbon. Sitting overnight now and going back in tomorrow. UPDATE: Check Engine light cleared with my scan tool and has not come back on. Car has periodic coughing/shaking, does not like 35mph range. Car otherwise drives just fine, getting 26 mpg in City driving / 33 Highway. That's good enough for me 👍
@@JonathanCheco Nope, sadly nope. Just driving with the Check Engine light on until I replace it, about $150. Car running pretty well. Thanks for asking.
I had the same problem. Check engine light for egr. Dealer said it is a digital egr and must be replaced $500 🏃. I took it apart, cleaned, changed 3 silver gaskets and check engine light gone.
Did you plug in a code scanner and did it say all your cylinders were misfiring? My car is running fine, but the check engine light is on and I'm getting codes that say all cylinders are misfiring. Some forums are pointing to the egr valve
@Rob in my case I already have an ultrasonic cleaner , so it makes more sense to clean it, assuming the diaphragm still functions . Even if you didn’t have an ultrasonic, it would still be better to clean it than buy a new one... again assuming the diaphragm and valve works .
For my Toyota Prius 3rg gen, I used an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three nuts in the back and good luck reaching the 4th HIDDEN 12 mm nut underneath the EGR cooler. Good video

Mine had a gasket between the throttle body and the EGR valve, don't lose it when cleaning the EGR! Also, it might be a good idea to clean the throttle body when there is a problem with the EGR, mine had to clogged holes that came from the EGR valve :P
Exactly- if those passages to intake or from exhaust are clogged- then there’s no / low flow. I think that’d cause the p0400-09 EGR insufficient flow codes- even with a good EGR

EGR valves are no good for a 90s model F150. You also have to breakdown the throttle body and clean out the ports where the EGR returns the gases. Carbon builds up in the ports and clogs.
Before cleaning your old EGR it is good to check first if the new one is available for a few bucks. That what happened to my 25 yr's old Sebring convertible 2.5 liter. The other valve worth to replace is PCV one, in case if it is not knocking loudly while shaking in your hand.
i think nowadays most cars w/ LEV and ULEV with variable valve timing don't use EGR. VVT controls enough valve overlap that the exhaust reenters into intake to fight NOx.
ive cleaned egr valve on 95 k1500 5.7l 350 and ford f250 6.0 diesel and both times my trucks ran better than id remebered in yrs. the chevy i cleaned on a whin after egr code on ford
Removing the EGR cooler is no joke. Spent a small fortune buying specialized tools. In retro, would have been better to take it to a mech and see if the mech will remove - clean the darn thing Myself, and have mech put it back together- to save $/time. Good vid, brother.
Scotty or anyone else in the know, I have a question. After chasing gremlins I found chunks of carbon deposits stuck in the EGR pintel keeping the valve open resulting in rough idle and acceleration . What or more so where are these chunks coming from? I periodically have to remove the EGR to free up the pieces whenever it starts acting up. I have placed the shop vac hose over the EGR port on the intake and sucked out a bunch.
i make sure my egr valve is clean by cleaning it with every oilchange but i drive like a fuckin maniac racing from stop light to stop light. my gas pedal has only 2 modes: on and off. +1 for keeping the environment clean #greenearth #dontpollute #itrusttheEPA #dieselgate
What?? PB Blaster and WD40 were designed to do two different things. PB Blaster in a corrosive that eats rust and is also a lubricant. WD40 is a cleaner, degreaser and protectant; not a lubricant and is crap compared to Zep, Liquid Wrench and PB Blaster.
@@dennisrandall9698 yeah, probably why he said to use it to break rusted bolts and nuts free....did you use your brain on this reply? Or did you.....Nvm obviously you're not using your brain
Thanks Scotty,,, and doing that for years,,, and disconnecting vacuum line and putting a screw in it,,,,, unplugging the electric,,,. Even using a block off plate,,,. But after learning more about aircraft engines,,,,. The EGR opens and let's hot exhaust into the combustion chamber,,, which cools the combustion chamber,,,, sounds weird but the hot exhaust draws Heat out of the head,,, !!!
0:32 sounds like your saying pumping hot exhaust gases into the intake manifold makes the engine run cooler . maybe no hot exhaust into the intake would make it cooler so it doesn't create nitrogen
I disconnected my egr and purge valves long ago. I ain't gonna run half burnt fuel back over my valves and sparkplugs. The car runs great and saves fuel.
Scotty. Do a video on blocking/deleting EGR and tell us if it's safe for the engine. There are topics out there that it will heat up the engines too high if done. Thanks.
Hey, not to be an armchair coach; but... when you're spraying carb clearner into that thing while it's turned upside down isn't there a risk of getting carb cleaner all over the rubber diaphram, thus deteriorating the integrity of the rubber?
For those you think blanking the EGR is a good idea, think again, don't forget that it does not only lower emissions but also lowers the combustion chambers temperature, if the EGR is "deleted" the engine will probably make some pinging sounds due to pre-ignition (too high temps on combustion chambers).
pdidi1 very true on gas motors, leave it in place. Diesel? An entire different story.. it costs $1000+ to clean all the soot out of the cylinder heads and intake tract. When the motor gets clogged with carbon it ends up polluting worse than anything due to insufficient airflow to combust the fuel. This can happen in as little as 60k miles! I.e black smoke eew.
Dear Scotty, next time you get a turbo diesel in, can you do a egr clean video on that one? The TDI models are so much more complicated looking. Thanks
On mine VW golf 4 1.9 turbo diese when i just bought it EGR was so clogged and the intake manifold was almost fully clogged up. Oil and all of the Carbon mixed and made a big mess. Cleaned and just turned off EGR and blanked it. Car runs much better and fuel economy is better too
Awesome video Scotty been battling emissions gas recycle Gremlins and nightmares in my dad's 94 Dakota We would appreciate an uptaded video with a while vacuum map run down . Thanks keep on revin and rollin
About blanking off the egr: most emissions check test and have to pass only on CO2 and egr has no impact on CO2, but on NOx (and mostly on cold start idling anyway)
i got a new EGR valve and i tested it to make sure it works and doesnt leak and it checks out fine. when i hook up the vacuum hose to it, my truck starts misfiring. when i unhook it, it runs fine. only code i am getting is knock sensor. any ideas? should i change my knock sensor?
Scotty, some egr valves have a built in bleed, this will keep the valve from sticking open all the time. A vacuum gauge can and will fall on most valves, the diaphragm will move but not necessarily stay up.
Yes, most engine covers will say VVT on them or you can see on the top of the engine where the timing chain cover is and look for a pair of wires harness going to the top of the cover where the timing gears are. However, a 1998 Lexus ES 300 doesn't have VVT. It just has 4 cam shafts per cylinder head and a timing belt.
Hey Scotty great videos, very informative. I took my car into the shop yesterday cause the check engine light. They're a really nice shop, good people, and they came to the conclusion that my EGR valve needs to be replaced. They want to charge me 589 dollars to replace. Am I better off replacing it myself or cleaning it myself? Should i ask if it just needs to be cleaned and not replaced? What questions should I ask? Also my car runs very smoothly. Thanks for reading
I personally have 3 torque settings...the first is a light "hmmm thats tight enough" the second is a medium "grrrr thats tight enough" the third is a heavy "AARRRHHH!!! thats never coming off again" setting.
. Okay but if you bypass the egr valve won't the engine light come on ? The reason I'm asking is because my former mechanic sold me a 1995 Toyota Camry and the engine light would come on when the weather was hot but it would go off by itself when the weather was cool I found out that I had a trouble code 71 egr related I cleaned the egr valve and the code didn't go away I went underneath the car to look for the egr vsv solenoid valve and noticed that one of the little vacuum hoses was discontinued purposely my former mechanic had done a bypass on the egr and not only that the other two little vacuum hoses that are connected to the vsv valve were switched I found this out after looking at the Haynes repair manual to find out the proper location for each hoses so I reconnected the 3 little vacuum hoses in their proper place and the engine light issue was fixed . That is why I'm asking this question because I'm thinking if my engine will run better if I bypass the egr valve it might be worth doing it I can always reconnect the hoses back in their proper place when the time comes to smog the car.
Did your code resolve after cleaning like this. Everything on my vehicle is working but I can’t find the problem. Cleaned passages in throttle body as well and changed the VSV with a working one from the junk yard to no avail. Any suggestions?
Shame the video applies only to EGR's from over twenty years ago,not relevant on anything even remotely modern with electronic egrs, those old mechanical egrs are cheap to replace anyway and determined by how much build up you encounter if you don't clean the orifices to and from, including any fitted cooler you could still be left with a fault regardless.
My car idles hight when I turn it on it's very annoying I can't drive it cause it starts to idle higher and higher on it own at red rights any idea what it is Scotty thanks
My 2003 expedition has a code of banks one and two runs lean could it be this it idles fine but under acceleration it stalls for a while then runs better
In newer cars, the EGR is now an electrical part mounted close to the gas tank. Mine failed at 25 thousand miles and it would have cost me $900 dollars to replace if it wasn't still under [factory] warranty.
Shwalker07 You do realize you're making this comment with full knowledge that all modern fuel pumps are mounted in the gas tank and all modern fuel pumps are also electric.
Yes but what does fuel pumps have to do with a EGR valve? By or on the gas tank you have purge solenoids, evap solenoids, charcoal canisters, fuel level senders, ect.... What kind of vehicle uses a EGR valve near the gas tank?
This is a vehicle that’s easy to get to and get off some vehicles like ford will be very difficult to loosen the egr valve I recommend to put anti seize on the threads when in stalling Incase you come across the problem again
I have a Pontiac 2004 Pontiac Grand prix. car rattles and chugs . the stereo went wacky then the check engine light comes on. Could other problems arise and not show up on a tester. I have a whini g noise when i accelerate or turn. My trans fliud is full but almost black. Any thoughts?

It would have been nice to see a before and after video of this situation. But thanks Scotty, i was not sure what that thing of jig did.
Tip ,use some never seize on the threads this will help a bunch when you have to pull off in the future
Important for good EGR flow. Keep the environment clean! Never miss a video.
economic driving skills are a lot more important than egr valve.
i make sure my egr valve is clean by cleaning it with every oilchange but i drive like a fuckin maniac racing from stop light to stop light. my gas pedal has only 2 modes: on and off. +1 for keeping the environment clean #greenearth #dontpollute #itrusttheEPA #dieselgate
Ozzstar mine stays clean by blanking the bloody thing off.
That is like saying you can eat led paint because a led injection from a bullet is more dangerous.
You sir, are a fucking idiot.
I was never taught how an EGR valve works in school!! Appreciate you Scotty!
My school never told me anything about cars
Should use a penetrating fluid such as PB Blaster on the threads to get the EGR off instead of WD 40.
PB blaster is great... liquid wrench is as well
Buen video para limpiar la EGR saludos desde México
Hmph...Thanks Scotty.... I never knew what that *Lil Flying Saucer* lookin thing was :) x2 on the WD40 presoak!
Jonny DIY hahaha lil flying saucer
Lol I was thinking the same thing... hey now I know what that is!
That green three wheel car is in my video game lol
Mcleod0000 same thought
cars don't "create" nitrogen, nor any other element.
Bro you don't run a fusion drive in your car? Get on my level.
Matter is neither created nor destroyed, it ia simply changes.
I disconnected my egr and purge valves long ago. I ain't gonna run half burnt fuel back over my valves and sparkplugs. The car runs great and saves fuel.
Great video! I needed this video specifically!!
For those you think blanking the EGR is a good idea, think again, don't forget that it does not only lower emissions but also lowers the combustion chambers temperature, if the EGR is "deleted" the engine will probably make some pinging sounds due to
pre-ignition (too high temps on combustion chambers).
pdidi1 very true on gas motors, leave it in place.
Car runs much better and fuel economy is better too
Scotty Kilmer, now with pictures, me like
Awesome video Scotty been battling emissions gas recycle Gremlins and nightmares in my dad's 94 Dakota
We would appreciate an uptaded video with a while vacuum map run down . Thanks keep on revin and rollin
The last time I was this quick I was single afterwards
Earth shaker ewwww
i farted
... and before... and during... and ever after.
I always lay plastic wrap before shi**ing on her chest
Beans Vapes And then you eat it don’t you
About blanking off the egr: most emissions check test and have to pass only on CO2 and egr has no impact on CO2, but on NOx (and mostly on cold start idling anyway)
Best thing to do is block that off with a thin piece of metal, that way the exhaust and carbon doesn't get in there to stop it up.
Yes, thanks for that.
Thanks again for another very helpful video I hope you're doing fantastically well
i got a new EGR valve and i tested it to make sure it works and doesnt leak and it checks out fine. when i hook up the vacuum hose to it, my truck starts misfiring. when i unhook it, it runs fine. only code i am getting is knock sensor. any ideas? should i change my knock sensor?
Scotty, some egr valves have a built in bleed, this will keep the valve from sticking open all the time. A vacuum gauge can and will fall on most valves, the diaphragm will move but not necessarily stay up.
Clean it and deaktivate that egr by unpluging that vacuum line and closing it up.
Egr is only bad for your engine
will the car still start, and run right?
will the car still start, and run right?
Is there any way you can visually tell if your car has variable valve timing by looking? I have a 98 Lexus es300
Does seem to be practical ranges.
I've cleaned my egr valve about 3 times, replaced it with a new one, checked all lines, and my car still runs better with it unplugged
That is why I'm asking this question because I'm thinking if my engine will run better if I bypass the egr valve it might be worth doing it I can always reconnect the hoses back in their proper place when the time comes to smog the car.
try some chevron supreme...
For the 3vze the code is P71. Thanks scotty this actually helped me out since I have the exact same engine...
Did your code resolve after cleaning like this. Everything on my vehicle is working but I can’t find the problem. Cleaned passages in throttle body as well and changed the VSV with a working one from the junk yard to no avail. Any suggestions?
What’s up Scotty!!! Thanks for all the amazing and helpful videos!
hello! thanks for watching
Fantastic, Timeless shirt. And dito on the video. You made my resolution for what I need to do easy. Replace the damn valve.
This egr valve problem ALWAYS occurs on the old Saturn s series cars so just a heads up if you have one of these old cars
The biggest problem with owning a Saturn is...
You own a saturn
Thanks for explaining how a Exhaust Gas Re circulation Valve (EGR) works and also posting the diagrams of it.
Mine just took a crap on my 08 Pontiac. Car started idling really hard and then a check engine light popped on. Super easy to replace thankfully!
Do every car have EGR valve ?? Like 2004 Camry and 2013 Rav4 ??
No. My 2003 Elantra doesn't have one.
CauseAndEffect then it's Good
Manufacturers predominantly use catalytic converters to address NOx emissions these days.
Those do have an egr.
Wayne S. I checked completely only oxygen sensor is connected with exhaust manifold...
i have that same engine in my Toyota, thanks for the video Scotty
Scotty is the g.o.a.t
Do you have any tips for cleaning the carbon out of the part of the air intake that has the port for the EGR valve without removing the intake?
شكرا على الشرح الممتاز جداً
Wow you sound so calm and suites even though I know you’re knowledgeable and very knowledgeable
Another excellent video. I learn something every time. Even if I know how to do it, there's always something to learn.
Thanks Scotty
My 2003 expedition has a code of banks one and two runs lean could it be this it idles fine but under acceleration it stalls for a while then runs better
Start with the simple stuff. Inspect electrical connectors. Intake duct leaks. it could be as little as tightening a loose bolt. Cheers.
Dude kills me whenever he exerts himself “ughn!” 😂😂
Thanks Scotty! As always, a great video. All the best from Dublin in Ireland!
In newer cars, the EGR is now an electrical part mounted close to the gas tank. Mine failed at 25 thousand miles and it would have cost me $900 dollars to replace if it wasn't still under [factory] warranty.
Are you sure you are not talking about a EVAP valve? You do not want hot exhaust gases by your gas tank.
@@Shwalker07 lol, this was funny, they stopped responding too!
Scotty is the REAL OG!
I like your green bike!
Merry christmas from England Scotty!
Brake cleaner works magic o. Things like this
This is a vehicle that’s easy to get to and get off some vehicles like ford will be very difficult to loosen the egr valve I recommend to put anti seize on the threads when in stalling Incase you come across the problem again
thanks scotty my car would not idle that fixed it thanks
I have a Pontiac 2004 Pontiac Grand prix. car rattles and chugs . the stereo went wacky then the check engine light comes on. Could other problems arise and not show up on a tester. I have a whini g noise when i accelerate or turn. My trans fliud is full but almost black. Any thoughts?
