I've got a 01 ford f150 with the 4.2v6 and I've probably changed the DPFE twice on it. My engine will start "pinging" and changing that sensor out stops it. Thanks for the upload!
Yes sir. I can't take credit as I found that solution for the ping on an auto forum somewhere. No promises of course, but was lucky and worked for me and is not terrible expensive part on mine. Think it was less than 30 dollars on my truck.

I found the valve to exhaust manifold pipe leaking at the seams where they put the flex section between two steel pipes on a 1996 5.8 throwing a P1400.
Have had P0401 code for about a year, really want to get rid of the service engine light so about a year ago i changed the DPFE sensor but not with a oem one I’ve been hearing that if you don’t use an oem one might not read it right ? I also bout 8 months ago cleaned the throttle body but only from the intake on top, could it be that I need to take it entirely off and clean it all ? Or should I just replace the egr valve itself sitting at 150K miles 2003 f-150 5.4L
02 explorer 4.0 sohc here. Changed dpfe sensor 2x along with the connector, new egr valve, new Egr solenoid, took the line off the exhaust and cleaned it with a wire brush and throttle body cleaner, cleaned the port inside the intake manifold, and same code keeps popping up!!!!
same here. Everything is new oem motorsport I think I have an exhaust leak in cylinder #2 after repairing a spark plug ejection. when they retapped the threads it caused a whistling noise during accelleration. But I also have a bypassed vacuum canister that might be contributing to the problem
Have you had a cat converter starting to plug up cause the hoses to burn up at DPFE sensor? Seen it once awhile back when I was a Chrysler Tech. Great info and video. You packed great info and less than 5 minutes. Thanks!
Anytime I've seen hoses burnt going to the DPFE they were usually the wrong type of hose. The correct hose is made of a special rubber that resists burning. I suppose it could be possible that a clogged cat would cause that though. It makes sense to me anyway. Exhaust temperatures in that are would be higher.
Did you figure out what it was? My EGR valve and sensor also replaced but still throwing the code. Immediately on start up too. Was about to just try another sensor if I get a bad one but idk
I have a 2001 3.8 L v6 and I’m getting the p0401 Egr insufficient code along with bad engine sputtering, lack of power, bucking, and stalling. Do you have any idea what this could be I’ve swapped many things and still can’t find the issue.

Its possible you have two problems. Tackle one at a time. I don't believe this code on that vehicle will cause any noticeable engine performance issues.
I have a 03 crown victoria, 4.6 2v. Yesterday i developed a bad hesitation and breakup. I changed the coils, plugs, fuel filter, and cleaned my maf, and cleaned the "charcoal canister" underneath the tank. Its still doing it. Any ideas? I did the egr test where you stick your finger over the hole where the foam protector was and it didn't die, just ran very rough

i got a 98 f150 4.6 with a code p1299 and p0401..for the p1299 code ive replaced coolant temp sender and the cylinder head temp sensor but now i have a hole that just magically appeared on my rusted exhaust manifold🤔 im just wondering could this hole on my manifold cause p0401 and could it also be the cause of the ltfts on both banks to read very rich at about -19?...also p1299 reappeared any suggestion would be very helpful
I'd say the exhaust leak probably is affecting your fuel trim. P0401 is most likely not caused by the exhaust leak. I'd suspect the DPFE sensor or clogged EGR ports. P1299 sets if the vehicle is over heating. A bad CHT sensor could cause that code but it's more likely that the vehicle is actually overheating. You'll need to figure out if it is actually overheating and why. Hope that at least gets you pointed in the right direction.
Yo what’s up my dude idk if your still active or not but I have a question. So I got that code replaced the EGR thing your 2nd option and it still has the code right. Okay so when I drive it. When I cruise at about 45-50 or so sometimes slower it humps like it stutters a lot when I press the gas softly. But if I press it hard it goes fine no problem. Also idles perfect sounds fine.
Usually a studder when under light acceleration at that speed, especially when going up hills, is indicative of an ignition misfire. It's possible you need plugs. But as for the code, have you checked to make sure the ports aren't clogged up?

I have a 2006 explorer and had the same issue, engine light on, code p0401 and car would just die after 15min of driving. It would start after few moments and drive normal but then again would turn off at the first signal light. I changed every possible related part like egr valve, pcv valve, O2 sensors, evap purge valve and even the cats. Nothing worked, still same code and cars switching off after some driving. Turned out it was the whole ECU unit!! Paid the refurbished one from eBay 250USD and boom!! Car now drives like a charm!!

It's quite possible that the egr port in the intake is clogged. If you where to apply vacuum to the egr valve while the engine is running does the engine want to die out on you? If not, and the egr valve is actually opening then your port is probably clogged.

I'd replace the hoses when you replace everything else. Now those hoses are special. They are designed to withstand high temps. So be sure you get hoses designed for use on a DPFE sensor. It is normal for those hoses to get hot.
Oh ya,that's the ticket, when I activate EGR valve at idle engine bigs for a second, my understanding it should die. To me acting like low gas flow, so ill net a dime to a dollar intake potrts,clogged, in check in morning and let ya all know if that was the problem, thanks any thing on purge valve, hold,vacume has 12v I do not have scan tool to send ground to the valve, have a po443 code valve circuit, any way to check out problem without scan tool command?

No, I don't think the EGR system is causing the truck to stall. I'd be more concerned with the p0102. You may have a problem with the MAF sensor. This will cause the vehicle to run very poorly. Usually a dirty sensor is the cause.

Yes, I am aware. There are a bunch of things disconnected on this vehicle as it is in a "you pull it" junk yard. Just sharing info about the code. Not my vehicle and I wasn't working on it.

Heard that it should have engine off hi beams on then disconnect both battery ends for 24 hrs and try it again the memory and pcm have stored memory issues that dont let go
Its not my truck but its setting here in my drive way by tow truck at first now its 95% done all codes fix/cleared but this on and navi point direction but was broken before i work on funny when i hit the bump i swear to god 20 yrs of not working that indicates north south etc was on when the check engine went off. But heres something nothing in the booklet or diagrams say anything about this unit at all it was a special trail edition 4x4 one ownership

Yes it was my coil pack. And a dirty egr valve.

P0303= #3 cylinder has a problem, check plug, wire, fuel injector, and compression , if you can.

Well... it could mean you have bad gas and that caused the check engine light to come on.....or one of a thousand other things.

It may be that the hoses are bad. You also may have too much back pressure. I've seen hoses to be the more likely cause.
Could also be something that I'm not aware of. So, it never hurts to have a hands on tech take a look.

Show us how to delete the egr completely, with how to hook everything back to where the car or truck runs good. Not concerned with check engine light.

That’s the hose that delivers vacuum to the EGR valve diaphragm. When vacuum is applied the EGR valve opens allowing exhaust to enter the intake.

Was probably just a bit of carbon build up that tripped it one time and the rest cleared the light

All new the vacuum lines the sensor the valve the metal line that snap off
Heard that it should have engine off hi beams on then disconnect both battery ends for 24 hrs and try it again the memory and pcm have stored memory issues that dont let go
Its not my truck but its setting here in my drive way by tow truck at first now its 95% done all codes fix/cleared but this on and navi point direction but was broken before i work on funny when i hit the bump i swear to god 20 yrs of not working that indicates north south etc was on when the check engine went off. But heres something nothing in the booklet or diagrams say anything about this unit at all it was a special trail edition 4x4 one ownership

I have that too on my '97. That is the code he's talking about here (P0401). Hoping one of these three will fix it for us both!
