Agreeing with the comments that this is a great video. I understand how floating shelves are supported now. However, I would certainly use the detector or stud finder to find studs to drill into. If you want to put any significant weight or something if significant value on the floating shelf (a movie projector) consider drilling into a stud using either the center hole or the edge holes. The pop-out metal mollies are great but drywall or sheet rock or whatever you call it has low tolerances for holding heavy stuff. Just something I found odd with the video and perhaps you should consider.
Totally agree with you Patrick and thanks for the comments, anyone purchasing these kind of shelves who are fitting out themselves should be guided by the instructions from the manufactures of the weight they can hold for each type of walling.
I've just seen so many videos in the last 5 mins about installing a hanging shelf and all were a snooze fest that I couldn't sit through. Yours explained it so easily and well. You've been a great help, cheers mate!
Wasn't expecting Craig from Big Brother but it makes sense knowing his background. Great video. Very helpful. This is actually the best video I've seen so far. Thanks!
Thank you so much😁😁 Just the information I need. I bought these nice floating shelves and my boyfriend was going to put them up. But, it's been 3 weeks. So I'm going to do it myself with the help of his tools. Thank you for your help. I am my own handyman now.
Thankful I found this video as this is exactly the kind of shelf I have been handed down and am trying to install myself for the first time. Thank goodness for you posting this!
Thank you so much for the video. could you please give links of the product you use in the video: the detector, the little T screwer you use at the end etc.
Craig, if you're going to be putting anything moderately heavy on the shelf and it's a plasterboard wall, do you need to drill the screws into one of the wall studs to give it some extra support?
Really Appreciate you man....(Y)....Soon i am going to buy new house and will do some decorative ideas and floating shelves is one of them...Thnks for giving me idea how to fix it :)
Great video. Sir a quick question. Why do we use wall plug? Can't we just put screw directly into the wall? When I drill to the wall, the whole gets bigger than required and wall plug gets loosen. On the other hand, when I put screw direct into the wall, it remains tight and I can hang my wall clocks etc on that screw. Kindly advise the difference? Thank you in advance
if you’re just screwing into wood or a stud then you won’t need anchors for that portion. I would also find a stud regardless if you plan on putting any substantial amount of weight on it.
I have an IKEA small floating LACK shelf...I am trying to hang it on the wall but it's not staying. I'm seeing all these videos with brackets to put on the wall. I don't have one. Is there another way to hang my shelf?
1. A 10-lb capacity shelf will be used for 20 lb worth of stuff, and 2. it will sag, then 3. you'll need to pull the anchors out and re-plaster the wall and 4. mount another shelf to studs.
Hi i wanted to know if I buy nd kallax shelf... what will be best things to use etc plugs screws ..... Any help is very welcome and will.be much appreciated
pghjr62 Not true. The issue is the total weight and the dimensions of the shelf. Any shelf that is installed using SIX(!) wall anchors like that will definitely hold that much weight. But how deep are those items? Take that into consideration, too. Considering how many people here incorrectly think that you must only install shelves into wall studs, let’s see what the professionals from hunker.com say: “Toggles, anchors or molly bolts are surprisingly strong. A 1/8 toggle can hold 30 pounds on 1/2-inch drywall and a 3/8-inch toggle can handle a hefty 50 pounds or more safely. When applying any kind of drywall anchor, you should understand how they work and which screw anchor may work best to put into a hollow wall.”
cut thru the shelf about 2" out from the wall with sawzall, handsaw etc. This will expose the piece screwed to the wall, Unscrew it and you have a blank wall will a couple holes in it.
cdouglas1942 like he showed on the video there are two screws underneath the shelf to stop it slipping off, there's no need to cut a perfectly good shelf in half.
Can someone please help me. I want to know which type of screw he used and which type of wall plug? I am an architectural student, designing a floating shelf.
Hi Farzaana Ahmed, All tools used in the video are Silverline tools. Screws: Machine Screws Pack 524221 Plugs: Wall Plugs Pack 576689 Please visit silverlinetools.com to find your nearest stockist.
+farzaana ahmed He used hollow wall anchors but didn't set them using the gun. This isn't a demonstration of how to do it, it's an advert for Silverline tools. That shelf would last 5 minutes.
Hi Malone Solo, The one used in this video is a shelf from Ikea but most good decoration stores sell similar floating shelves. Good luck on your project! Thanks, Silverline.
Those plasterboard fixing are ok but if you want a shelf that can stand a lot of weight then better to use a GripIt fixing, british invention featured on dragons den
+Yogi Berrra , There are a few different types of wall plugs that can be used, i find the plastic screw in wall anchors the best for a light shelve like these.
Floating shelves are not fit purpose on any wall... the rods that slide into the rear of the shelf is smaller in diameter compared to the bored out holes in the rear of the shelf itself, therefore when you screw the x2 screws from underneath they pull the shelf downwards and over time when the weight you put on the shelf will sag over time and will eventually make the wall plugs pull out ever so slightly causing cracks in the walls etc

I imagine weight might be an issue. Is going thru drywall alone enough to sustain that shelf if you loaded it with books?
Thank you for this! You make it look easy enough for even non-carpenter types like me. Yay!
finally someone using the right hollow wall anchor for this shelf instead of them stupid little plastic plugs well done
