    Just an FYI, a better option for a vacuum pump would be a UP28 Electric Vacuum Pump. These pumps are used in cars with diesel engines. They are on-demand pumps built for the job. I got mine off ebay for 45 bucks a few years back.

      Diesel uses either hydro boost which is ran from the power steering system or air brakes. The vacuum pump is used for mainly the hvac system.

    Engine vacuum does not " suck " on the master cylinder. It basically stores itself in the power brake booster. The check valve keeps it there, always ready for use. When you apply foot pressure to the brake pedal, a push rod activates a progressive valve within the booster causing a fairly large flexible diaphragm to react to a change in atmospheric pressure, ( lack of ). Normal atmosphere pressure at roughly 14.7 pounds per square inch acts upon the diaphragm, which is several square inches in diameter. That controlled "boosted" force overcomes a spring within the brake booster and exerts a force against a second push rod which actuates the spool piston in the master cylinder. Hydraulic line pressure to the calipers/brake pads then stops the car.
    Just wanted to clarify the physics of the thing. Like your channel and your efforts to help guys with their projects.

    thanks for the great info on basic electric car conversions! Man I want to do this so bad. I have some great ideas for a home charging station that would make it even more economical to almost Free. It would be so nice not to drive by the gas stations and smile.
    thanks again.

    !BREAK FAILURE WARNING!
    Use real brake hose tubing instead of aquarium hose, to prevent the tubes from collapsing under pressure.😨Also add clamps to the ends of the hoses. Safer for you and those around you. 😄This is a car we're talking about. Don't trust your life to straws.

      Linden Wyckoff Power brakes also work without vacuum, but they are no longer powered of course requiring a lot of pressure on the pedal.But you can always stop. True about aqarium hose not suitable for vacuum, only for positive pressure. Vacuum (underpressure) hoses have internal reinforcement against collapsing.

    Hey Benjamin! I'm starting to like your videos! It's kind of back to basic on how to make your own EV car, very nice! Do you know where the vaccum pump comes from? I mean, was it in a car before or something else?

      This vacuum pump came from the parts pile for my friends Battle Bots! There are cars which use vacuum pumps. If you know a certain make an model, you might find one at a junk yard. Vacuum pumps are also available through industrial and surplus catalogs.

    QUESTION: You don’t mention the general 12V battery anywhere in your videos other than that you’re keeping it and it run your electronics etc. How are you charging it? Is it only charged when your drive batteries are charging since you got rid of the alternator with the ICE I would assume.? I guess.it wouldn’t matter if the car can only drive 20 miles, but if someone puts in a lot of batteries and gets like 50+ miles, it might not be cool for night driving with all the lights, radio, power break vacuum pump going and could deplete the 12V battery before your drive batteries need recharging so it begs the question Is charging the onboard 12V general battery from the lager battery bank using a voltage divider a doable idea or would it be better to step down transform the main battery array to a 12V charger on the general 12V battery so it can change as needed from your main battery array so it Is less likely to be run own before the drive batteries cut out thus ensuring you don’t lose power breaks until after the car refuses to drive due to low charge on the drive batteries anyway? Trying to figure out the best way to handle that...

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  5 років тому

      This car had such a short range that I didn't even both with a DC/DC converter.
      When the car is plugged in, the 12V battery automatically charges, and that plenty for the accessory system in the car.
      Typically, you would install a DC/DC converter - a device which takes the higher voltage of the main traction battery pack and isolates and downconverts it to a lower voltage appropriate for charging the 12V battery.
      You can think of this as being the solid-state version of an alternator.
      On my motorcycle, I used a tiny DC/DC converter which was actually designed for rack mount computers!

    Hi Bejamin could you get away without power on your brakes if you have regenerative braking? And how do you install regenerative braking? BTW Thanks so much for doing these videos. Absolutely brilliant!

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  5 років тому +1

      Regenerative braking would be a feature of the motor and controller. You don't "install" regenerative brakes, you just need the motor to be in place and use it as a generator to slow the car instead of a motor to drive the car. Not all motors are appropriate for use with regenerative brakes. The motor used in this car was a DC Series-Wound motor. That is a style that is NOT easy to use for regen. Permanent magnet DC motors and AC motors work very well for regenerative braking.
      Even if a car DOES have regenerative brakes, you would still want service brakes that work properly as the manufacturer intended.

    Do you have a video running ac compressors and power steering pumps? Is it feasible to run those 2 off a secondary, smaller, electric motor?

    • @tatethompson2648
      @tatethompson2648 3 роки тому

      I mean it wouldn't necessarily have to be running the whole time, just switch it on when necessary. Dont forklifts have smaller motors I could use to drive those?

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  3 роки тому

      I do NOT have a video about that, but YES, people will run those off separate motors.
      There are now a fair number of vehicles which had electric Air Conditioning in the first place - such as the Toyota Prius. I do know that there have been some people who have reused those in their own home conversions.
      On older conversions, people would power an A/C compressor off the tail-shaft of a DC drive motor.

    Wouldn't think a pressure tested tank would be necessary with such low pressure and a scratch built one could be fitted more easily and look nicer. Could probably even use a plastic radiator expansion bottle.

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  6 років тому +3

      Hi Jim! This project did NOT have regenerative braking. The series-wound motor is not suited for regen. Many other motor types, such as permanent magnet motors and AC motors ARE. My Vectrix electric motorcycle uses a permanent magnet AC motor and DOES feature regenerative brakes. They are activated by twisting the motorcycle throttle backwards!

    Why not use simply Disc Brakes?

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  4 роки тому +1

      The car already has disc brakes in front. It's not a matter of disc vs drum. It's a matter of the fact that "Power Brakes" in a car are powered by the vacuum created by the engine. Without the engine, most of the braking force is not available, so it needs to be replaced with something else, such as an electric vacuum pump.
