- BIKEPACKING BC - PART 1 (Nanaimo, Squamish, Whistler)
Follow me on on this multi-part series as I go bikepacking from Nanaimo to Penticton (in a very roundabout way). In this episode, I travel from Nanaimo to Nairn Falls, just outside of Pemberton.

Love the watercolor artwork for your travel maps! looks outstanding.
Thank you. It's been a while since I painted.
I love the shoutout to VanDuzer! Excellent content my friend!
Thanks ! - he’s the bomb !
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures You and Ryan are both very inspirational. Thank you!
Now it is clear what Santa does in the summer!😉👍❄
You got that right!
LOL - your shout-out to Duzer...I love that guy. Awesome video Mr. Beard (lol). Cheers
Ian - clad you liked it… I’ve been watching Ryan for years.
What an amazing series
thank you very much... this was my first large trip project and I learned a great deal "after" I got home and started editing. Hopefully this learning curve shows in my future large projects (Explore North Vancouver Island)
I enjoyed your video. I did a lot of bicycle touring during the 70’s and 80’s.
Cool, thanks
Great job on the video's. I liked this one allot for a couple of reasons. I use to climb at squamish bavk in the eighties and early ninties. Have taken the Nanaimo , horseshoe bay ferry allot, and as a hammock camper i feel your comfort. Have not been to the coast for a very long time, so beautiful. Liked the shot out to Ryan as well. Thanks for taking us along.
Glad to have you along for the ride 🤘🏼I used to work & climb the Squamish / Whistler area 86-90 too.
A bikepacking trip in BC has been on my list since I was on vacation in Vancouver and Victoria a few years back. Your videos make it easier to put it high on my list. I can’t wait until the borders open up so I can head up there.
Keep up the great content!
There are so many places to ride, and just not enough time. I also can hardly wait for the borders to open, I have places in the US I want to go ride. Thanks for joining me on my adventures.
Way cool!!!!
Excellent. I’m glad you enjoyed it... more on the way !
Thanks for putting this video together. It's awesome! I really like your map graphics.
Glad you enjoy it! -- these were some of my earlier videos. I used to paint maps for magazines & books prior to major hand injury, and this was the first time I had painted again. It was fun putting them together.
Great job you did
Thanks 🤜🏼🤛🏽
Just found your video channel at video 10 in this series. Cool. Starting at video 1 and subscribing. 🚴♂️🙂
Welcome aboard Jeffrey! Glad you could join in. I hope you enjoy the series and all the other little trips have have posted. Feel free to comment and make suggestions any time. I’m still learning as I go. Take care.
Brave of anyone riding that highway, I prefer the slower gravel route (albeit not a completely connected route, only about 5km of highway) from Squamish to Whistler (except for maybe the 9km of washboard). Props to you sir.
My plan was to ride the trial, but after a delay at Squamish bike shop, and a campsite I had reserved almost in Pemberton, I opted to ride the road to make up time. Mind you there is a very wide safe shoulder all the way from the ferry and the route sees lots of cyclists. Traffic wasn't an issue at all.
Next time you are up for it, I recommend checking out the Sea to Sky Trail. Probably best ridden from north to south given the elevation change, but much more enjoyable than that highway. I have ridden the Whistler to Squamish section, and it is beautiful.
Yeah, it’s a blast. I’ve ridden the “new” trail a few times and raced the Checamus challenge back in the day. I didn’t ride the trail that trip because I was running behind schedule and had reservations at Nairn falls
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures Great to hear - it is a real gem. I would love to get over to the island for some bikepacking. I wish we had a few more overnighters for this stage in my life.
Im a new subscriber from the UK, just changing my Koga Signature with Rohloff hub from a Pannier Touring bike into a frame bike fast tourer. Thanks so much for sharing this amazing scenery,, reminds me of Scotland, but bigger and with blue skies :-). Cant wait to travel across USA.
Welcome aboard! I can hardly wait to ride Scotland !
I’m a new subscriber and love your videos bud!! Keep up the good work!
Hey Nevan, thanks for the compliments 👍 I’m glad your enjoying them. Feel free to make suggestion anytime 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Loved the video. Keep up the good work.
Working hard at keeping thing real
Thank you very much for sharing
My pleasure, I hope you're enjoying the adventures.
I have my road bike on a trainer and really enjoy watching your beautiful videos. I lived for almost 8 years in various places in BC.. I have travelled throughout on a motorcycle and you bring back some wonderful memories. Thank you... Oh , I now live in NS
Thanks / I’m glad I was able to transport you back to BC in 10 min increments. I’ve heard there are a some good bikepacking routes in NS. All you have to worry about is dodging the moose.
Nice! I have enjoyed watching your videos! They really remind me how much I enjoy my own adventure rides!
Glad you like them! More to come. This round I did more "documenting" than story telling, and now in the editing phase, I realize sooo many things I could have done differently. AND and I'm having issues with purple hue in the sky/trees, that is really difficult to get rid of. I'm shooting everything in ProTune flat, but still this cast is hard to correct. Frustrating.
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures I know your pain!
Very much enjoyed your video what an incredible scenery, I was up that neck of the woods 5 years ago and have very fond memories and always have the longing to get back to BC one day soon hopefully. Happy Pedaling🤗
Thanks for commenting - means a lot to me 😊 there are some amazing places to see!
Great video just came back from a week if camping in that area. Waiting until the kids are a little older to bikepack this route. Looking forward to watching the rest of the videos.
That is awesome! I hope you enjoy them, and it inspires some ride ideas. Take care :))
4.01 The Dozer definitely has great taste in UA-camrs!
Agreed!
Can’t wait to see part 2. I just might have to do the same ride next summer. 🤙🏼
I learned a lot on this ride when come to shooting / unfortunately you learn them in the editing process AFTER the ride! I’d happy your enjoying them.
part 3 uploading now :))
Refreshing trails in BC. I’m thrilled to see trees and water TY for taking the time and effort . Great vid . I’m 61 BP in hot dry Arizona🌵 🤙new sub !
AWESOME!!! Riding keeps us young at heart. I'm glad you're enjoying the BC scenery. The Flagstaff area is actually very similar to the souther interior of BC. Thanks for watching, subscribing and dropping me a comment. Be Safe & Have Fun !
Some pretty solid camping spots. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Most on this trip were designated camping areas, and a few wild camps. I learned a lot on this trip about how much I forgot to shoot. Hard lessons, but hey, gotta start somewhere. More to come!
This is really well put together, deserves more attention
Cheers
Thanks a bunch :) Be sport... spread the word (wink wink)
G'day mate, just found your channel and look forward to sifting through your videos. Cheers and have a great Christmas 👍
Glad to have you aboard. Feel free to fire me questions, suggestions, comments, and criticism. Also pop over to my RideWithGPS account (same name) if you want any route info. ~ salty
Sounds familiar that music
Since the start of the BIkepacking BC series I’ve been using Epidemic Sound / it’s one of the 2-3 top music licensing services, so chances are your going hear something, somewhere on UA-cam. I’ve already come across a handful. That’s the way it goes.
I've done the lower half of The Isle Golen Ears Harrison and Cultus Lake. But no way would I ride the highway to Whistler
Its actually not bad at all. Wide shoulders and a surprising number of cyclists. Due to time constraints, and a mechanical that had me in Squamish, I didn’t have the time to ride the Sea to Sky trail that runs from Squamish to the north end of Green Lake ~ maybe another day.
Just stumbled on to your channel. Really good content, keep up the great work! Bonus points for the Duzer shoutout. 👍
I’m glad you stumbled you way here :). Thanks for the compliments. Ryan’s a great inspiration and helpful dude. Hats off to him.
Came across your profile on Instagram and now made my way into your UA-cam channel. Great touring shots!
Thanks greatly / more to come / and I hope to get better at my shooting & editing over time.
This looks amazing! I live in Philadelphia, I would love to see BC by bike someday. I found your channel from hearing you on a podcast I listen to. I forget which one it was.
Thank 🤜🤛 I was recently a guest on the My Back 40. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. I’m learning and getting better, but for now, just trying to have fun, pass on some knowledge and show a few places I’ve been too. Feel free to comment any time !
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures Awesome! Definitely looks like fun and the videos are great!
Thanks 😊 it was a fun :) - glad you are liking the vids - next one coming out soon
Awesome videos and what gorgeous scenery! Thanks for the hard work while making these videos and I love the shout out to Duzer's channel! Keep doing what your doing man! Love the adventures! I have a few bike packing vids up if you would like to check then out! God bless brother!
Thanks man! Glad your enjoying them. I’ll check out yours too !
Really enjoyed that! I'm curious: what did you do with your bike when you walked into Brandywine Falls?
Locked it to a post, take my knife, bear bangers, & Electronics then hide my bear spray.
Ha, very nice start of another great trip! 17 days 🥰 When was this? Nice ref to Duzerman, he might come up there one day! Stay safe.
Sept 10th to 26th. 1 rest day, 1 rain day. And a bunch of route changes because of the heavy smoke. I didn't think climbing to 8000ft in some very remote areas to see more smoke was wise given the heat wave, and my sea-level conditioning. Yeah, hope I can ride with Duzer at some point in my life.
Such a great video! Makes me want to fly to Canada and go riding!
Cant wait to see the next one :)
There is so much to ride in BC, as the episodes roll out, you'll see a wide variety of landscapes, and that just barely scratches the surface. Thanks for commenting :)
You might enjoy our ride on The Great Trail.
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures I lived in Squamish for 7 months in 2016 and didnt realise there was so much to see! Looking forward to seeing the next episodes :) Thanks for making such great videos!
@@PiquePictures thanks, ill have a look
@@tedpanozzo7632 yeah, so much to explore. up the Squamish River & Callaghan area, or hiking in Garibaldi. I spent a number of years exploring the whistler/Squamish area in the late 80s.
Hello from Cumberland.
Hello, hello !!! I gotta get north and do some trips from the comox area - I have friends up there so I can park and ride / too many places not enough time.
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures the wife and I are planning to ride from our house around the backside of Comox lake to Port Alberni and home should be a one-nighter cant weight for the spring!
When ?
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures sorry spring
Yeah.... my plan this summer is to make more trips up island - I have friends in Courtenay/Comox I can leave my vehicle.
KONA should sponsor you.
I’ve owned many Kona’s in my life… and my kids/wife too. I would be flattered if they did - “You listening Kona?
eeek! haha, awesome
Also, I'm craving tacos now!
LOL - yummy & craft beer!
Fun video! I’m curious about what editing software you use? Also, I really like the animated map with your route; how was that accomplished? Is it a separate plug-in or software? Keep on riding and filming!
I use an older MacBook Pro with DaVinci Resolve which has a their own embedded software for graphic animation called Fusion. In Final Cut Pro, they have Motion, and Adobe Premier, they have a another program call After Effects .
I painted the map, and built the animation including the simulated “flying” - it takes a long time to do, only because my laptop is seriously underpowered for rendering such complex tasks. I’m hoping to upgrade in the spring.
Great range of skills, used really well. 👍
Thanks 🤛🤜🤘
@@arlo37 thanks a bunch !
I dont see Duzer commenting. Lmao.
LOL / he actually contacted me directly on Instagram. We chat often.
Touring, not bike packing.
Well, wait until you watched them all… it is a 1000+ km long trip.
Hay Salty, great channel but please wear your helmet.
I hear you... it usually only comes off on brutal climbs when I'm overheating. I know, I know... I really should have it on ALL the time. A bad habit of my younger days. Thanks for making the observation and comment. :))
