Hey Maggie, you should definitely check out the title track from Boston's 2nd album, "Don't Look Back"
How did he get up there? He's Brad Delp, that's how. React to literally any of their songs, because they don't have a bad one. This is one of the hottest debut albums of all time - blew us out of the water as teens.
Just pick any Boston tune from that list you gave at the beginning. You could start with Foreplay/Longtime but everything they do is great and special. Hitch a Ride will change your life. I'm so glad you have discovered Tom Scholz and Boston!
@LadyIarConnacht it's sad that he'd unalived himself, though
Did you notice that the "UFOs" on the album cover are actually guitars?
A band like BOSTON comes around only once in a lifetime.
You will not find a bad song on this amazing debut album
To this day II still say that Boston is the only band I have ever heard that never had a bad song! I love this band so very much. I loved this album when I was a kid. I love it now that I'm almost 60 years old. I still have all their original al;bums I bought when I was in school and I have worn out countless tapes of this band. RIP Brad Delp, so sad but his legacy lives on and always will!
As I like to say, you could confidently build a bomb shelter out of this album. That’s how utterly solid it is.
I was going to say something to that effect. All of the songs from this album, to this day, can still be heard on the radio. The best debut album of all. IMO.
It is arguably the greatest debut LP of all time. There are others than compete, but it's probably the greatest. AND, this is the opening song!
Top 10 best albums all time
Everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY needs to watch Rick Beato break this song down from start to finish to truly appreciate the depth of genius involved. The first time he isolated Brad Delp's voice I burst into tears. RIP Brad, sadly missed.
💯 💔
A man need a link!
Ha! I posted the same thing before I read your comment. And you are correct about Brad Delp!
lol was about to comment, but thanks for this shoutout 😀 Just wanted to add that (according to Ric Beato), Brad still continues with his vocals tho they are drowned by the lead guitar ... only after isolating the vocals from the rest of the instruments will we get to hear it ... RIP Brad (also love his "til' our love comes back around" when he was with RTZ)
Rick Beato is the SHIT!!
I love that guy.
As much respect and admiration as Brad Delp's vocals get, it's not enough. People obviously know Boston but so many people don't know Brad Delp's name. One of the absolute best voices in all of music...EVER.
Tom and Brad are music idols. Tom had an amazing talent for song writing as well as playing guitar and engineering the final product you hear. It's so very sad that Brad is no longer with us. His voice was epic. Such an incredible loss!! I might be biased but they never recorded an album I didn't like.
Brad and Freddie had the best voices and it’s amazing that their career’s overlapped.
Foreplay/Longtime is another MUST listen by Boston. Actually the entire first album is fantabulous!
I knew that suggestion was coming. 😏
I agree that this should be her next listen. And yeah, I would be hard pressed to recommend a better album to listen to in full.
YAAASSSS!!❤❤❤
Foreplay is the first metal song IMO
@@metal-adjacent Nah man that album was released in '75. Sabbath, Zeppelin and Deep Purple had all done their best work by then. It's great but not the first anything
This is a masterpiece of epic proportions. This entire song was recorded in Tom Schultz basement. He played all the instruments and Brad delp banged out the vocals. There are no spaces in this all spaces are filled from
The vocal doubling to the hand claps. He was an absolute prodigy!!!
It brings a tear to my eye when I realize we'll never have new music like what we had from '65 to '80. This was one of the best albums ever.
Word.
No doubt. Do you remember hearing this and other excellent tunes back in high school for the first time? Cruising with a friend who has a new tape or going to a party at someone's house or at the gravel pit or just at work hearing it coming on the radio for the first time. I didn't know how good we had it back then but so glad to have this as part of the audio wallpaper of my younger days.
@@dso227 Sounds just like my story!
Every single song on this album is an absolute banger.
Hours from now, drivers on the freeway are blown away as Maggie Renee passes them, windows open, in full throat, howling along with Tom Scholz!!
Wish i was there 😂
Brad Delp 😎
And just like that I'm back in my teenage days again. Thanks for the reminder Magee.
Brad Delp was the lead vocalist Tom Scholz played all of the instruments except the drums on the debut album
I do it
3:20 Brad Delp actually hamonises with the guitars and, yes, he went that high.
Rick Beato anaylised this song 5 years ago and let you hear Delp's voice with the guitars (Video: "What Makes This Song Great? Ep.71 BOSTON (#2)" about 8m30s in)
Rick Beato just broke down another one, "A Man I'll Never Be". "BREAKING DOWN MY FAVORITE BOSTON SONG"
Can't recommend Rick's work enough...go see his channel!!
I’m so glad you brought up Rick Beato’s breakdown of this song. Brad Delp’s isolated vocal tracks literally give me the chills every time I hear them. I’m so glad I got to witness Brad perform with Boston eons ago. He was an amazing live vocalist and he’s sorely missed.
@@kevinkaurin8383 No way, that's my favorite song of theirs too and I don't know many people who have heard it. I'll check his video out!
You're correct
Brad Delp was a freak of nature vocally! So good! If you dig the harmony guitars, check out the song "Hitch A Ride" from this record.
When Brad hits that ultra high note in the end chorus!😮 He's up in the nosebleed section!!
Brad Delp was an awesome singer who unfortunately was plagued with depression and self doubt. There are interviews of him on YT where he said he could never see himself part of something successful. No wonder he took his life back in 2007. I hope he knew how much he was loved and appreciated by his fans!
Funny how people don't believe what the rest of us know as fact
I miss Brad Delp so much. His voice was so amazing 😢
Tom Scholz graduated from MIT. He’s brilliant. Some of the effects on Boston’s recordings he designed himself. He did everything on the first album except play drums and sing. Brad Delp, the singer, did all the vocal parts himself.
The equipment he makes is still used today.
A key device was a “power soak,” which let him get the sound of an amp cranked up without destroying the neighbors.
@@jmolony31And was used extensively on the Def Leppard album Hysteria. Also, Alice In Chains used it too.
The Rockman is iconic.
Tom was also an engineer for Polaroid.
Brad Delp had boss level vocals. Few others through that time or even now could challenge his voice and range and still sound so smooth
Agreed. About the only other person I think is on the same level is Mickey Thomas.
So very true Michael Sweet maybe.
Boston, light years ahead of their time.
I listened to Boston’s first album almost everyday after school from 1976 to 1979 when I moved to Canada from the Philippines. I would put on the headphones and just block off the rest of the world. I listened to it so often I wore out the record. This was way before CDs. When no one was home I ‘borrowed’ my brother’s electric guitar and play air-guitar to Boston’s whole album. I play guitar, but no way could I play like Tom Scholz. I went to my very first concert in 1988 in Vancouver BC at the Pacific Coliseum. It was for BOSTON! I could not believe! There they were, my childhood heroes! They did not disappoint! After all these years this album is still magic! Years later I met my ‘Maryanne’. This song is now so bittersweet, as every now and then, I still dream of that girl I used to know, that I let slip away.
My "Boston" 8-track was worn out and would no longer play on my car stereo a year after I bought it. I wore that sucker out. (I can to this day hear the 8-track "breaks" in the songs in my head.)
You are not kidding, every guy has that MaryAnn, and this song lets us remember her
Maggie, loved your reaction so much. I picked up the guitar again. I remember the chords, one of the first I learned so long ago. I started playing this song again, and pretend I can play like Tom Scholz and pretend I can sing like Brad Delp. Crank up the volume and let the music take me away and pretend I’m a teenager again.
We all did (listen to it daily) along with Frampton Comes Alive
Look up Brad Delp's isolated vocals for this song. Absolutely incredible. If you want to really nerd out, check out Rick Beato's "What Makes This Song Great" episode on this song where he dissects the song and shows you just how brilliantly this was recorded.
What Makes This Song Great? Ep.71 BOSTON (#2)
THIS
The incredible guitar work
Rest In Peace, Original Boston Lead Singer Brad Delp . . . He Was 1 F'n Amazing Singer . . .
R.I.P. Brad Delp . . . :-o
I've always loved that song, over the many years since its release. Great reaction as always, Maggie.
🎉🥳🎶💖
Hello @Maggie Renee
This first album that Boston did was recorded over a 5 year period. The keyboardist and vocalist that you admire, was a MIT graduate and perfectionist. The Drummer and him would record as often as they could and did everything themselves.
The story goes that when they got their first record deal, they walked in and handed the executives their finished product and said here it is, all you have to do now is press it.
They did after hearing it, and the rest is music history.
You will not find a bad song from Boston. Check out Foreplay/Long Time. It starts off with an amazing Instrumental (Foreplay) and goes into a phenomenal song with more vocal acrobatics.
Happy New Year and I wish you much continued success, happiness, great health and prosperity in 2024. 🙏❤️🎤🎶
Saw these guys on their 1976 tour!
Fantastic and will NEVER Firget the great Sounds!!❤
Imagine how we felt as 16 year olds here in this for the very first time 😮❤😂
How many others also still have the original album?
I love that you listened to this… This was the power ballad of my generation. Boston, Kansas, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Queen, Peter Frampton the memories come flooding back. Glad you enjoyed it! ❤❤❤
This is easily the one of the best written and performed songs all time!
From the best rock debut album ever. When you have some personal time, I suggest playing the whole album. You will not be disappointed. ❤❤❤
Arena Rock perhaps. But Black Sabbath on line 1, changed the music industry forever. Both in the Top 5 though.
I'd say Can't Buy a Thrill or The Doors were even better.
Absolutely brilliant piece of music. In my opinion, this is a historical significant album.
This is the music I grew up on - real musicians using talent and hard work. Among the brilliant bands of the 1970s and 1980s, Boston was among the greatest. So glad you found them. You just entered the rabbit hole.
Most of their biggest songs are from the 70s Though I use to be a huge 70s fan but mostly that's in my past, now i have put all my trust in the Lord Jesus Christ Because Of what he has done for me personally. His death burial and resurrection Has redeemed me. And i know he died for me personally. I know I'm going to be with him forever in Heaven. Because i have put all my trust in The Son of God. I now have so much peace and joy . I hope you put all your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. He loves you enough to take your place on the cross because we all deserve Hell, But its total peace now for me.This will be the best news you will ever hear Have a great day God bless you ..
This song reminds me of high school 74 to 78. This song packs all the same power today as it did when it first came out.
One of the best rock bands and the best rock song ever! Everything they did was that clean and amazing. Brad was a fantabulous singer. I'd recommend Piece of Mind and Amanda next.
I am so fortunate to have been in college in the late 70's/early 80's and was able to enjoy this type of music when it was just being created. Excellent rock, clean sounds, beautiful harmonies, powerful yet melodic, and bands that could actually sound like their albums when playing live! I never saw Boston live, but I did see Zeppelin, Heart, Queen, and others.
His use of double layered guitars and vocals is absolutely genuis
Brad Delp is a GOAT and unfortunately didn't ever get the recognition he should have...great review...it does bring goosebumps every time I hear this song. Your facial expressions are so genuine and fun...good luck in life, wish you the best you put a smile on my face today.
I just love watching a young person appreciating the music I grew up with and they wonder why older people think modern music sucks ! Cheers from New Zealand
Tom Scholz was a design engineer for Polaroid (cameras) and an MIT grad. He made his own guitar effects etc.
The voice at the end was sustained with studio trickery. Although Delp probably held it a long time before it started to be manipulated because he was an incredible singer.
Dude! Thank you for explaining that long note at the end.
For me this is the ultimate rock anthem.
Thw spacey sustain at the end comes from the composer and guitarist (and bassist and keyboard player) Tom Scholz. He invented and built the one of a kind effects pedal used here and on all Boston tunes, which allows him to do endless sustains as well as the spacey sound effects. A true genius.
Bostons “A Man I’ll Never Be” is a favorite.
I dont want to go back in time but being born in 55 I was so glad to have so many forms of great music to grow up on from the early days of rock to the 70's and 80's
I’m a 40 yr old guy and I’m so thankful my dad was a drummer in a rock band all throughout the 1970’s. He and my mom introduced me to “classic” rock. I became a drummer myself. Rock is my favorite genre to listen to and play as well. This band, this album will never go out of style. IMHO.
Nothing I enjoy more than listening to those that can sing amazingly. I want so bad to do that!
Boston guitarist Tom Scholz was an M.I.T. trained engineer. He designed and built his own guitar effects and rewired his amps to achieve that distinctive "Boston" guitar sound and tone.
Long Time/Foreplay is a masterpiece!!! ❤❤❤ Love Boston
Brad Delp's voice was legendary.
It was the voice that went up there simultaneously with the guitar
their debut album is pure fire, every song is amazing.
Instantly fell in love w/ this song from the radio back in the day (1976-77) and is still one of my favorites of all time.
I was privileged to see Boston on their debut concert tour one of the most memorable concerts of my lifetime. Truly more than a feeling!
This song is like butter for my ears.
Same
This song is a classic and the entire first album is like a greatest hits!!!! There are definitely more fantastic songs, like the more romantic "Amanda," but this is probably my favorite. "Foreplay/Longtime" is also a great one on the first album. Don't be put off by the song's length, because it is a musical extravaganza!!!! Trillion times of fun watching this video with you and happy new year my beautiful friend!!!!❤
I saw them in 1979 on their "Don't Look Back" tour. It was FANTASTIC! Yeah, I'm old but grew up listening to great music such as this. 😂
Saw them on the same tour and it was amazing! Delp’s voice live was incredible as well. Such a great era for rock ‘n roll!
You need to watch the live video. Brad makes it look sooo easy. And his smile gets me every time. Never breaks a sweat.
When this song came out, you couldn't turn on the radio without hearing it 😊
Bostons first album is a masterpiece. Every song is a stand alone masterpiece.
It is amazing how many young people today are discovering music from my generation of 50 years ago.
It is amazing but in a way they’re forced to because the music of today sucks. Nothing is real anymore. And the lyrics are degrading and foul.
“Epic” is really the perfect word.
Quite possibly one of the greatest rock songs of all time. If it were re-released today in would go to number one.
This was recorded by 2 people. Tom played all the instruments, Brad did all the vocal tracks. Unbelievable talent.
Jim Masdea played drums on “Rock and Roll Band”. He later replaced Sib Hashian as the band’s drummer.
I forgot to mention: Mr. Masdea also claims to have helped Mr. Scholz compose the songs that ended up on the debut album. Mr. Masdea hasn’t proved that claim, but his testimony is compelling evidence for it.
Brad is one of the most severely underrated vocalists of all time.
Have a great day!
Not at all. Considered one of the greatest after Mercury.
Not remotely underrated
3:13, yes it switches to the guitar but Brad Delp ALSO sings a high "ah" sound there in the background. So much layering... so genius!
1978 I was 17 and a senior in high school and we listened to this "8-track tape" all the time in the locker room - cars and parked at the M System on Saturday nights - my town was only 1200 people lol
Boston, Don't look back and Third Stage are 3 of my favourite albums 😊
Boston and Kansas sustained me through my high school years. The talent and musical genius from both groups was amazing! Thanks for the reaction Maggie.
Likewise! But so many more...it astounds me that we were blessed with such great music in the 70s.
Maggie you got me excited and up ready to run a marathon after watching you react to Boston 😂😂
RIP Brad Delp.... He was a truly amazing singer. Sorely missed....
This band led by Tom Scholtz , who recorded this whole album in his basement , and I believe played every instrument himself , and the vocal where done by his friend Brad Delph, one the greatest singers on the planet
Brad Delp
@anthonyhaylock6655 Not quite. All of Brads vocals were recorded at Capital Studios Studio C by producer John Boylan sans the vocals on Let Me Take You Home a song that was written by Brad and recorded in its entirety at The Record Plant LA by the band as pictured on the back of the record. Tom did not play all of the instrument tracks, Sib plays drums on every track except Rock and Roll Band and Jim Masdea plays on that song.
Brad Delp vocals are off the chain and Toms ear for recording and guitars are second to none
17 years old, sleeping over at a friend's house, getting high, then he asks me, " Have you ever heard of Boston?" I said "You mean the city?" He puts the album on and OH MY GOD!! My first truly mesmerizing experience in my life. Every song was amazing and that sound was completely different from what was on the radio. I'll never forget it.
It truly is the greatest rock and roll song ever recorded. I've spent a lot of time thinking about what song I would miss the most if I could never hear it again, this would be it!
The opening guitar melody is probably the most recognizable ever !
I LOVE this song and band, but I'd put the guitar open to "Sweet Child O' Mine" above it. Honestly, the fade in makes it a perfect song to use as your alarm, but I found myself not liking this song as much so I had to remove it as my alarm. Lol
Rest in Peace, Brad Delp. His depression took him away from us.
His Mary Ann really did slip away and he never got over it
The trick of the singing turning into a guitar sound, is his voice being faded into a guitar pedal. So it's still him singing. It's a great effect that makes this song so memorable.
You just heard one of the best songs ever produced, ever.
More Than A Feeling is one of the greatest rock songs ever recorded.
This is regarded as one of the most important debut albums in rock music history. You really couldn't go wrong doing what I have seen other reactors do, which is just start with the first song on the album, which you just did, and then reaction by reaction, just work your way through the album and the sequencing on it is great as well. But its iconic for a reason. Everything on this album is just fantastic in its own way.
When you were demonstrating the high singing, suddenly it reminded me of another classic rock song that it is popular to react to although this one is a few years older, and it is called Child In Time, by Deep Purple. Ian Gillan, their lead singer, was on the Broadway recording for Jesus Christ Superstar as the voice of Jesus Christ. They were a heavy hard rock band but that guy can flat out sing. I know you will lose your marbles if you hear it.
One of the best songs ever made,i love you Maggie ,you need to react more 😁🍀🌞!
All hail Brad Delp! One of my favorite rock singers!
I remember when this album dropped. I must have listened to it 10,000+ times.
I'm 65, and when that song comes on the car radio, it is turned up loud. I am back to 17 again. Brad Delp was a treasure, and so, so sad he is gone.
Also, please do Don't Look Back next!
Ditto. But I’m only 61. 😂
She gets it! I’m 54 and I know when they get it ! Awesome! Keeping digging there’s another world of music that will blow your mind!
"A man I'll never be" is going to rock your world!
Every song on this debut album was a hit. Next up "Foreplay/Long Time", "Rock and Roll Band", "Let Me Take You Home Tonight", ... yeah, all of them.
It's really fun to see young people discover my old fogie music and dig it the way we all used to when we were your age! I saw Boston live on tour for this album in 1976...they were touring with Kansas!! I can assure you that the musicianship was top notch and Mr. Delp did in fact hit every note without cheating or sliding or wavering. Nearly every song on the first two albums is an anthem...I understand Scholtz is kind of an ass, but he sure was smart and talented.
Boston is perhaps the best debut album of all time. Every song is excellent, and the story of how it came to be is amazing!
This is Real Music. Never gets old
You have to listen to this entire album from start to finish. All hits.
Not all hits, but definitely all hit-caliber.
The most underrated leadvocalist there is ...
He’s pretty much universally regarded as one of the top two or three vocalists in rock n roll history. He’s not remotely underrated.
Driving around in my 69 Plymouth with a pioneer sound system blasting this cassette for the whole neighborhood !! Great times !
Forty eight years ago...almost half a century. Welcome to our generation (boomers) of real music. Very pleased to see how well you understand the caliber. I think you're spot on.
From what I've read, the instrumentals were worked on over 6 years before final recording. Which explains why there's no "filler" songs on the first album, and they were all instant classics and hard to pick a favorite.
Reminds me I need to buy another CD of this album since mine 'disappeared'. Brad Delp is simply amazing. I worked with a part-time Paramedic name Mary Ann and when she would walk in the room, we'd start singing this to her. LOL Love to see you digging and getting into a song so much, Maggie.
I saw Boston in concert several times, in the seventies and early eighties. From the first time i heard 'more than a feeling' when it first came out, has been my favorite song all these years. RIP Brad...there will never be another who can match him.
Another Boston fan is born. Been one since 1972. Yes, I'm that old.
God bless you.
More Boston please! Loved your reaction to a band that is truly greatness!
As @still-kickin says "You will not find a bad song on this amazing debut album". If you recognize the chorus it is probably because this song has been used on several TV commercials over the years. AND as us old farts often (too often) say, the best rock came out of the 70s!
There are some songs that you never forget the first time you hear them. This is one of those for me: Summer of '76, as a college student living in Santa Cruz.
Welcome to what is probably the greatest song of the rock era. Been a fan since the album first came out, but I've grown to appreciate it more as I watch people react. The amazing thing is that the vocals were done live to tape. So if he didn't hit that note.....Oh, and the other amazing thing is it was all recorded in Tom Sholz's basement. That's what happens when you combine an MIT trained engineer with virtuoso musical skills.
BTW, at the beginning when you were looking at the "best known songs".... they included (I think) every song on their debut album. It was HUUUUGGGGEEEEE.
This is such a great song. Their songs "Amanda" and "peace of mind" are good too, if you're going to continue checking out their music.
Their debut album was like nothing we had ever heard. It hit like a thunderbolt and I for one was hooked and 47 years later they are still one of my favorite bands. Their only downside is their very small catalog. Once you have reacted to a few of their songs, you need to listen to the whole album from start to finish. Pure genius.
What a happy, beautiful, instinctual reaction to what was going on in that recording. Your music sense and training do you credit.
