This Real VTOL Concept Was So Bad They Gave Up... SO I MADE ONE!

- Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I am attempting to recreate a failed VTOL concept known as the Grumman G-674 Nutcracker. It was a plane that had a folding fuselage allowing the tail to fold down 90 degrees from the cockpit, along with the engines. It was then intended to be able to hover in the position to vertically take off and land. Even at face value, it's questionable how good of an idea this was, but it's even worse than I had imagined.

About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

the nutcracker is embodiment of how childishly creative grown ups can be xD
I feel like if a bird and a plane merged into one . . . this seriosly messed up aircaft could be it
well it was probably made for aircraft carriers to save space on it keep in mind that back then vtol was a new concept
W- well y- you see it would fold like a nut cracker. what? W- well it's gonna land on a folding landing pad
This was probably how it went
I have a request scrapman, it's the 'praying mantis' tank, I think it was supposed to raise it's turret up so it can shoot from behind a wall, you can do more research for clear info
After some researching, I think it's worthy for Scrapman's attention. Not too overcomplicated, simple in concept, could be upgraded by Scrapman.
@@locke_ytb lol, I literally saw this after I posted a comment about this same tank. great minds think alike.
simple yet practical, my favorite
It got heartEd, it's getting made
GET THIS TO THE TOP!!!!!!!!!!
You , going through this, with the scrapman comb, is honestly, the best.
quality content + history lesson + interesting creations + scrapman = yes
nah, I think you just wrote the equation for entertainment
@@nixyndixy9431 any can be entertaining, but scrapman is the most (imo)
Quality content + history lesson + interesting creation = ScrapMan
Trailmakers+Scarp machine+quality content+history lesson +interesting creations +Scarp man=Ultimate Scarp man videos
Yes
Imagin manning the AA turret, you're told something is being picked up from the east, you look over, and you see a squadron of T-posing jets approaching, you freeze up unsure if it's the ridiculousness of the situation or the dominance asserted by the plane
I’d end up thinking they’re giant insects...
That would be quite effective paintjob
@@glauberglousger6643 that's terrifying
I would shoot myself if I saw this
All of them parking in a bridge like bats sleeping
Hey, Scrapman this creation reminds me of a Humming trying to use its long beak to drink nectar from flowers and it feels more like it when you count in the boom arm and the special landing pad made for it altogether.
When the landing mechanism is acalled a “boom arm” things are guaranteed to go wrong
hehe plane go boom boom
ScrapMan's videos are just the best, he has a really good production quality, he has a great personality and there is so much more but I am not here to write an essay. I just want to congratulate ScrapMan on becoming one of the best youtubers of all time, if not the best youtuber of all time. In my opinion he deserves to have over 10 million subscribers.
True
YES, i’ve been waiting for this!!
you play plane crazy?
@@Dxniel09 yes
@@jadenrhys_4987 cnxrw.
I’ve got three ideas. All of them have been built but never got past the testing phase. They are called tail sitters, rotodyne, and ekronoplan. You can find some good sources of it, including on a UA-cam channel named “Mustard” which was how I found them. It should be fun to see.
I love the "failed inventions" videos!
petitions for scrap to get his own gaming history TV show XD
actually if looked at from the aircraft carrier view it makes perfect sense as you could land launch these off the sides of ships not just carriers. could also hug buildings most ships and buildings could be adapted by adding 3 small platforms specifically for the lander gear instead of having full Heli pads installed i can see the money saving aspect if it hat actually flown and worked.
You could make a Cyclocopter?
*Cyclotech VTOL*
Or a skatopticor
Thank you for starting to make videos in trailmakers - i love it!
A build suggestion, the "Aerotrain". It's supposed to hover but not like the Japanese maglev trains.
:o
Inspector: how are you supposed to land
Creater: Haven’t ever thought about that
Best advise ever to receive
It's a bird, it's a plane, nope it's scrapman, DUCK, loving it brother lol
i had a feeling this one was only a matter of time to be made since i learned about it last week lol
And in this day we have the V 22 Osprey, An aircraft that accomplish this by combining a helicopter with a plane, of course by only moving its propellers.
M270 MLRS rocket artillery. You may even be able to make it in instruments of destruction, though it would be easier in trailmakers or heck even scrap mechanic
yes
Doesn't he only build interesting and quirky stuff? At least for now he does so i don't think he'll build it.
@@nikkiofthevalley it's cool but it doesn't have any quirky ideas like the thing that is shown in this video
4:38 the V-22 Osprey is kind of an airliner.. not civilian, but it’s a transport VTOL of troops and equipment.
you should try making the christmas bullet - a biplane which was supposed to flap it's wings like a bird
Hey scrap man, thank you for choosing my idea, I didn’t really expect you to choose my idea, I also thank found and explained for giving me the inspiration to ask you that.
I love it when you research these things and build them in trailmakers or scrap mechanic its very entertaining to see you keep essentially saying BUT WAIT THERES MORE since you now have become the most knowledgeable person in the world on some random failure XD
damn, I was building this for tomorrow lol, guess I’ll throw that one in the trash as well xD
Would still love to see your take on it :)
Son of Nutcracker: Concept
ScrapMan: "This never made it past the design stage".
V-22 Osprey: Am I a joke to you?
Wow impressive. I honestly was already starting to give up on this being viable after seeing the model version.
This is very interesting that you were able to get this to react so stably as well as the control method they chose.
Personally I feel like with some central venting ports facing forwards and backwards from a turbine, this could be somewhat viable for a drone with current technology and calculation speed.
However idk about on a boat, any sort of strong gusts to contend with and this wouldn't be able to launch or land / dock. VTOL would present way too unstable a surface for any sort of flight.
Easy way to test or show an example of this would be to take it into the high seas, and put it in Vtol, you don't even need to try any manoeuvres, it's just going to flip all over the place probably.
Love this sort of technical engineering from the past series of videos and creations.
Wonder if this inspired Robotech/Macross... 🤔 Great job on another build!!
Son: Mom can we get an Osprey
Mom: No we have an Osprey at home
The Osprey at home
This thing reminds me of the Dragonflies in Black Panther… maybe that’s where they got the inspiration for their vertical takeoff sequence
16:50
Scrapman getting "historically" streesed
This just looks like a semi-normal plane T-posing to assert dominance
Failed war creations are cool and all, but it would be really cool for you to try to build the arctic snow cruiser, a HUGE truck that was made to... Well... Cruise trough the arctic and it have a mini bi-plane to aid in recon or help stranded expeditioners, if failed for so many reason, it was abandoned somewhere for so long, it got covered in snow and NOBODY KNOWS WHERE IT ENDED UP, so that's a pretty good title too: "This arctic snow cruiser was so flawed, it got abandoned and nobody know where it ended up"
Someone probably already said this but if just the engines were on a gimbal (like the v22 osprey) i feel like it would have had a much better chance at success
Edit: oh look scrapman himself said it
Edit 2: oh look the engineers said it too
Super enjoying this series. Really inte1resting concept and rather well executed. Good effort, good sir
More 8 minutes of Scrapman dissing the ingenious naivety of the engineers of old. Loving the historical rebuilds
This made me wanna rewatch Planes for some reason.
The music when you finally managed was epic.
WOOO MORE FALIURES AND WEIRD STUFF FROM HISTORY IN VIDEOGAMES!!!!
I just watches found and explained for this and this thing is just weird lol
scrapman sead it wrong scrapman should say i will tank this creator for giving me a good content
What I've gathered from this is that for military this thing would be awful but for stunt flying this thing would be incredible
Just totally ignored the whole torque imbalance lol. There is no way the thrust lines up with the center of mass in the hinged position.
In my opinion as shown on 7:29 that the jet/engine/thruster is right in front of the wing and tail so I think that’s why scrap man ignored it?
Edit I just finished watching the vid and he did exactly what you said in the comment
Honestly, considering you're not a fighter jet pilot, this seems very practical
for all that you bashed it, it seems to work great
Love your videos man! I work 6 days a week 11 hours a day no cap, you get me thru it most of the time! So thank you for making such awesome content!
This would be a rather cool albeit still nonsensical concept for some kind of alien (star)fighter. I imagine huge carrier vessels with entire swarms of those fighters perching on rows of those 90° racks like giant insects....
Can you do a screw drive vehicle in trailmakers?
I really enjoy watching these historical failures!
The magazine looks like something you would see in Fallout.
If it took that many tries, imagine they are testing this with people, how many lives just fly away
I learned more about practical engineering in this channel than in uni.
After seeing this, I'd love to see a build of a 1980s Starscream toy.
i never even realized this is what the dragon fly plane that was in black panther!!
Hey scrapman if you use the liner chrome extension it will make your life much easier for searching things.
Oh hey scrapman never gives up and never lets down
scrapman, you are making great video but, it may be better if you can provide all the information as you build the creation. I know information is not boring , i am saying that breaking it up can be more entertaining.
Love your videos though!
If you're looking for more unique aircrafts to replicate you should look at the VZ-9AV Avrocar or the LTV XC-142, both are experimental VTOLs
How different a world it would be. Thanks fer the link, My Dad had subscriptions to the Popular(Science, Mechanics) series of magazines.
Looks more like a hummingbird than a nutcracker. I'm wonder why Son of Nutcracker wasn't build since it's basically a V-22 Osprey.
I did a full video on it on my channel
Amazing series, love the content
You should build the Lockheed flatbed, its a plane that is "pickup truck"
Another failure of history is the ekranoplan and honestly I think it would be fun to build
If you think about it, the rotating exhaust hood thing of a F35 is similar in concept, although it'd got a secondary lift fan in its mid section to help its stability and lift.
The plane when folded has the posture of COME AT ME BRO
it so neat to see these machines recrated, and learn about them and why it failed
14:10 Basically how unstable my DeLorean fly mode is
I just realized that your intro song reminds me of DanTDM's intro song
I mean this in the BEST way!
Son of Nut became the harrier, they’re perfect for ships without runways but the powerful jets damage the deck
If you wanna learn more about this aircraft, Found and Explained made a really good video about it
Lol you should’ve added that interstellar docking song when you were trying to get it up onto the bridge on the last try.
Bruh I just watched a video about this v tol thing last night, and now your building it 😀
Incompetent Boss: So what yur sayin is... It's possible...
Exasperated Engineer: If you completely disregard the safety of the pilots, ignore the glaring budget problems, and overlook the fact that the landing system alone would take up MORE space than a regular aircraft, I guess.
IB: PERFECT! I want a scale model by Wednesday!
EE: (Sighs in defeat) Yes sir...
Here is a challenge. The A-10 Warthog. It is not a failed creation, far from it. The challenge is to make it work like the real life version (it can also fly if one wing breaks and one of 2 engines fail)
The plane that T-Poses to assert its dominance
Scrap man the best Channel for history of machines
I just realized that the one where only the thrusters turn was the inspiration for the V22 Osprey
"it's interesting seeing how the past people had this hopeful optimism for Science."
I... don't think that has even changed even today.
Hi Scrapman I really love this serie... But as real ingineer I have to say that I struggle every time you bring us one more wierd failure project 😣 how can a man imagine such complex and crazy ideas 😂 I mean my purpose everytime I start a new blueprint is make it simple
I just played the song in the background at 4:20 at a concert 2 days ago. Funny coincidence!
Scrapman, I dare you...
To make a Kugelpanzer.
Also known as, the German Ball Tank
ALSO HAVE yOU HEARD OF THE HOLY ROLLER?!
its a true wonder of Canadian engineering :)
It served in countless engagments in the second world war!
At one point of time, it was even outfitted as a bridge layer and a mine sweeper!
Its the only tank of the First Hussars (from London, Ontario) to have survived!
If you're interested in touching a true gold mine for grabbing new viewers then you should see if it'd tickle your interests!
It's quite the legend where I'm from, I reckon that Draegast knows a fair bit about it too, given how I lived in the same town as him for a while (London, Ontario)
The City of London is hoping to get it field worthy again, but its extremely expensive and the fact one of the tracks was rebuilt using parts from a newer model of tank means that even if it does run, it'll never be quite as elegant as it once was!
Lastly, in case you ever feel like you don't get much reach past the USA, here in the Windsor essexs, you're extremely popular :D
I started a club at my school, dedicated to you :)
it is #blessed
I'm honored to be subscribed to you!
Sincerely,
some rando on the internet
I could imagine test pilots would have looked at the model and said NOPE
18:05 Trailmakers does that with positive hinge output. If you just rotate hinges and use negative (aka read arrows) output, you would get constant speed in both directions. Im actually suprised You didn't know that but i guess you dont build that much.
Idk if its a glitch or feature but you can actually use this for complicated stuff like folding gears or something.... Also im pretty positive, its the reason why TM steering is TRASH.
reminds me of a dragonfly, makes it look cute trying to land
you should revisit this one but build a platform that folds flat or 90 degrees to take off with
I believe the Harrier is the first capable VTOL but was replaced by the joint strike force!.
i think they say a humming bird and was like thats a good look for a vtol plane
4:33 I googled Ben Kocivar and he was born on the 13th April 1916 so would be almost 106 years old if he's still alive.
Hey Scrapman, you should try to make a Blackbird Vehicle in Trailmakers: High Seas. I would love to see you try that… day 3
You can check out the UA-cam channel found and explained because he provides quite a lot of information about old plane designs that were weird or couldn’t be built and u could get a bunch of ideas
That second plane you showed looked really close to the Osprey so that's probably what lead into it I'm guessing
Ideas:build a Lun(project 903) it's a military sea plane that never use it on wars .It might be harder to build it bc the thrusters has to put on the cockpit.
Thrusters on the cockpit? What could go wrong!? 😆
Tbh its a cool concept, imagine seeing a jet just hover there in that position looking at you
You should try to make another failed vtol called the pogo aircraft
can you do a make a car challenge that has assistance features built-in with your multiplayer friends? You can go for any assistance feature but i suggest you go for a mid-air assistance that allows for smooth and no-damage landing
You might get better results if you put the thrusters right under the forward wings in the vtol mode like it was in the original version.
That one is the "son of nutcracker" which is essentially a V-22 Osprey, but jets
This guy should do a satisfactory playthrough
cant wait when i see video 100 of failed inventions and guess what, ill watch em all
Out of curiosity, did you try reversing the folding hinge? I'm not sure but I know trailmakers isn't perfect but that could fix the folding in the air. May be worth a test
I heard the blunderbirds intro, im ready
I'd love to see you attempt to build any successful VTOL aircraft (Osprey, Harrier, whatever) in one of your vijeos. See if a gamer can overcome game physics challenges that have actually been solved in the real world.
I think he did make an osprey, saying that i believe it was about 2yrs ago when the physics were far different, but it would be interesting to see him make a harrier or f35
It's similar to a tail-sitter. A drone/plane with rotors and wings that lands on it's tail. The tail-sitter is an actual good idea and they work very well.
