THE AERIAL SCREW: There's a Reason da Vinci's Helicopter Was Never Built

  • Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I am attempting to replicate Leonardo da Vinci's aerial screw. It was essentially a pre-helicopter design that was never fully realized. There might be some reasons for that.

    About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
    Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

Da Vinci would be so proud that his creation actually works in a simulated world inside the personal thinking machine of a guy called Man of Scrap. And that people can watch a moving and talking picture of his creation actually working on their own thinking machines.

I think you can get this thing to work better by adding vertical fins to the lower part, increasing the drag when it rotates. This in essence allows the rotating servo to push against the air to rotate the top part. (angular momentum is conserved as the air (in real life at least) would be pushed back)

Theres a paper “plane” design where its just a tube with fins all around the rim on one end of the tube
And you’d throw it while giving it a spin and it should fly
Quoted “plane” because its not really a plane, its just a tube lol

On the PlayStation port (I assume for Xbox, too, but I don't own one), The achievement named "Leonardo Da Vinci", which requires to be in the air for 60 seconds without power cores, and it shows an image of the aerial screw, sadly no power cores would probably mean a glider, instead of an aerial screw.

Upgrade time: 2 counter-rotating devices should be stable aside from the stability of the sails. And you should need half as many sails so maybe that would be more stable.

A long time ago in brick rigs I made a series of 'tornadoea' which were effectively spinning screws, that games build grind allows for different axes but in trailmakers you could make a series of layers that are plus shaped with a servo between each layer, and then as they spawn they rotate by like 45 degrees or so, then adding more servos to angle the sails, this making a corkscrew shape

Fun Fact: There are drones being developed using the aerial screw type of prop. It is show to be comparable in stability and power to propellers of a similar threshold with the possibility of being a lot quieter and more thrust at lower RPMs, along with some other advantages - though its major drawback is its weight of construction.
The fun bit is that it generates lift in an entirely different way to most conventional methods, so a whole lot isn't known about it at this time and they haven't yet determined an ideal shape for them.

That was the first thing I made when sail were added. Add some counter rotation to the bottom and you can stop the spinning. Attach a compass on a servo to the counter rotation and you can control you facing. Add some shifting weights and you can sort of control tilt to give forward/back control.

  • @barefootalien

This actually wouldn't be all that hard to modify to get working in Trailmakers. I can think of two different ways.
One, tailfins or sails extending radially outward from the base would provide a lot more rotational drag, putting much more of the power into the air-screw.
Alternatively, any even number of them connected to each other, with corkscrews in counter-rotating pairs would work, though then it'd just be a primitive quad-copter.
You could also make one with two concentric corkscrews on concentric axles with gearing to make them counter-rotate, but... I think that'd far outstrip the materials available and understanding of mechanics of the time.

There is this device kids played decades ago. It is lost to history now. It has ball/disc like pointy bottom and a lever on top, if you press it down it spins until it looses its momentum due to time or collisions. Could be fun to make something like that and see how fast and how long you can make it spin.

Try making the French "Marquis' Multiplane" of 1908. It was originally a flightless machine, but seeing how you tinker in trailmakers, i think you can pull it off and make a flying version.
Also, you could use magnets to try and 'grab' the sails in a certain positions like the transformer you showed in this video of yours.

I feel like because you have a 2x2 wide core you could use pistons attached to the last sail and go down or up with them. Or even off of the side of the core rod with a trailer or free hinge to adjust for any angle to make it a little more stable but at the same time maybe not with the connection points idk.
Ps. Techblox devs are looking to add small jet engines and simple sensors next update and there was the memory logic bits last update.

You could anchor the bottom of the creation with a piston and a anchor block that attaches to the sail

The original model was connected for stability and avoid collision.. if you connect the sails to the rotating platform, it may work. Still not sure about that

8:17 Woah woah woah woah woah woah woah, That reminds me of the Japanese Anime Scenes "Ore ore ore ore ore ore ore ore.........." Anyways even I was surprised when I saw that thing lift of for a little time especially when Scrapman explained that it isn't supposed to fly.............. 🙂
Anyways I was thinking after watching this video It might be easy for you to make a Sail Beyblade!....Right? If it is easy then pls make one cause even it would be fun to watch it...........👍🏻

What about putting an anchor block at the bottom of the sail. have it on a piston or rotating arm to extend out and attached to the central column once the sails are fully extended. would that make the sails none adjustable but more stable. Also you should use this sail idea and flip it horizontally and see if you can use it to propel and land car.

You, kan and kosmo should do a challenge where you create vehicles for each other then do a race or derby. you can't rig the entire thing it still has to be driveable

I think trying to make the BV 141 would be fun. It's and asymmetrical German plane from WWII. It could pose an interesting challenge when trying to get it to fly well.

If I'm not mistaken, your modified version has a state, where the corkscrew is in the Buildmode-position. Wouldn't that mean, that you could brace the bottom of the corkscrew against the main mast, too, and move the brace up and down when extending the corkscrew, perhaps via pistons?

I play besiege and this accurately looks like the flying block from beseige. Trailmakers meets besiege!

I think you could potentially use a piston on another servo thing to stabilize the screw part. I don't have the game, but I think that's a decent solution.

I would have attached the sails to the central shaft at inervals that line up when the sails are angled.

What is you put a piston(s) on the senter pole that is connected to the end of the sail/propeller so it's (hopefully) more stable and it can still move up and down.

You should try to make a sailboat that stabilizes using a hiking system in Trail Makers. #33

put sails on the bottom platform so you create some drag so it flies better
