  • Old House Gap Road is a off-road trail / Forest Road 1530 in the Pisgah Nathan Forest of North Carolina. I read differing opinions on how hard it was to traverse, so I took a day to check it out and know I know I will be going back. For overview, the roads leading to Old House Gap Road are gravel and can be accessed by almost any vehicle. The Trail itself seems to be not too hard, but best for vehicles with clearance. I have hear that Subaru Foresters with electronic differentials can make it. I plan to travel it front to back in Feb and then I can give my full thoughts then.

Nice video. Those are the type of trails I appreciate. 👍

Thanks. It was a beautiful ride, and was still enough here and there technically to keep some attention on the wheels as well.

Just got back from doing some trail riding up that way today. Ended up turning around at the exact spot you did. Busted my rear end trying to scout out the road beyond that section. Had It not been so muddy and had I been with another vehicle I definitely wouldnt have been so concerned. Anyway, a beautiful ride indeed. Not sure how familiar you are with the area but if you're ever in the neighborhood again and want to ride, hmu. I can show you some pretty cool places in the area.

Hi Josh, Awesome that we are scouting some of the same trails. I expect to try old house gap again soon. Do you have any suggestions on other trails in general area that are worth a try?

Have you had any issues out of your LR3?

Yes but few. While I consider it a great truck overall, it has some electrical errors that come and go. This may not be entirely Rover's fault since mine is a salvage and had issues to begin with. But I would still buy it again.

Enjoyed your video, did you get to go back and run the trail ? My gf and I did this road last weekend in the dry in our Raptor . You made the right call , I was a little nervous about going through it solo in the dry bc I’ve never been on it and we only had about 2 hours before dark. Going though it in the wet with a couple of other rigs would be fun.

Hi you where right to stop ✋

Yeah, it gets rougher up ahead. We went back a couple weeks later and finished the trail in the "dry". If it had been muddy, one section right before the gap was crossing up rigs left and right even with damp conditions.

I noticed you had an L322 in previous videos. Do you still have it? Also, if you had to choose between the LR3 and Range Rover which would you lean more to? I currently have a 2006 L322 with 189k running beautifully, but may purchase an 2006 LR3 with lower miles. Not sure because I’d may miss the Range too much.

I sold the L322 Range Rover a while back. Depending on needs I could see picking either over the other. For me, the ability to carry 7 people of the LR3 was a big factor. Plus I like that I can more easily sleep in the back of the LR3 when car camping. Plus i can comfortably haul 4x8 sheets of plywood in the LR3, so it wins for being a better utility vehicle. But for date night or cruising around town, the RR was the one to have. It is a classic look.

Far Reach Engineering I could totally see that. Caring supplies from the hardware store is a bit difficult in the Range Rover, especially since the seats only fold up. I do love the look of the L322 but I would use the vehicle more if it could do more than just look nice. Not that it’s not capable of off-roading but I don’t want to damage it. I love the way it rides on the road though, feels terrific.

Are you ever afraid of it leaving you stranded out there in the middle of nowhere?

With some vehicles I have in the past yes, but not with the LR3 on this trip. I've been through all the main systems recently and while there is the always a possibility of the unexpected, there was no worries this round, outside of the potential of getting stuck, yes. But breaking down. no. ---- this does remind me of a story. Back when I was on top of a mountain in the Rockies, and a rock was flung into my radiator of my Jeep XJ at the time. Shredded it. Miles and miles away from anything. But i filled up water bottles during river crossings, and let the Jeep roll down the mountain with the engine off. Then used the bottles of river water once I landed in the valley, to enable me to limp it into the next mountain town. That was an adventure - but still didn't leave me stranded. :)

Far Reach Engineering Awesome man, subbed. I have an LR3 that didn’t have a great previous owner. About 124k miles now. Was thinking about selling it, but it’s probably my favourite vehicle I’ve ever owned.. I just don’t trust it. How many miles does yours have, and do you have a diagnostic tool? Cheers

Your inner adventure is begging to be released.
Get a jeep and release it.
Don't buy a new $60K one. Find one that's already been scratched up a bit. Lift it, spread it, find a jeep club and go!
    You won't regret it.
    BTW what you're driving isn't a rig.
