It’s definitely possible, even without the Rubicon. Completed it in a stock Willys during a hurricane (Laura). Out of the box rigs are capable, but any rig is only as good as its driver.
Willys has the advantage of 32" mud tires. I'd say a Sport could do it too, even with the Dana 35 and non-limited slip axle, but it would need a good set of AT tires (KO2s, Open Country AT3s, Ridge grapplers, etc).

Nice video, I drive past the trail all the time, but never make time to go do it. The shorter wheel base of the cj/yj/ and tj's means a lot of things you scrape on with a 4 door a 2 door will clear. I believe most people turning around has more to do with the driver and less about the vehicle. My only advice would be not to pulse through an obstacle. A little momentum with a steady foot will retain traction where stopping and going will result in lost of traction and lateral movement of the vehicle downhill. Always glad to see someone taking their kids outside.

It was over the summer during the rainy season when we went visiting from FL and I have to say the most nervous was going through that part next to the rock and tree roots that want to push you over the steep hill down to the creek! I've never seen it that wet. The first creek in may get to the hubs. You really have to pay attention to rain fall while in the mtns! My favorite part is the rutted out down hill we call peanut butter hill. It's a mess when dry. I didn't see it in this video. Perhaps your next visit. And again, hike the boys up Max Patch. It's a beautiful 360 degree mtn top view. Holla and I'll take you up there! Great editing again!
@@SimplyMustGo one of my springs was broken and I went to a junkyard to pickup two springs. After traveling nearly 40 miles to get them he only had the front springs after telling me he had the rear. So we searched the junkyard and the only springs we could find came out of a jeep liberty. They were 1” longer but much heavier springs, and not wanting to wait for springs I went ahead and decided to give them a try. He gave me a great price and I got them to use until I could buy new. The seemed to work great and I’m having no issues, no noise or vibrations I just kept them. And the jeep looks level, but you can see about an 1 1/2 difference. Anyone that’s been on that trail knows you need extra clearance for a couple obstacles. I’m disabled and I live on a budget, so I have to make do.
This trail is on my bucket list. We are planning a trip that starts by leaving our home in Johnston County, NC to Uwharrie. Then heading to Windrock in TN. I figured we can hit Hurricane Creek on our way from Uwharrie to Hurricane Creek.
I would love to try that trail in my 17 JKU SAHARA UNLIMITED. Skids custom bumpers and a 2.5 in lift with 33,s. I think it would be an awesome challenge. I've done some badly trails with her and she did great I did Broken Arrow in Sedona AZ with no lockers.👍 . loved your video.🙏
I’m looking forward to doing this trail. I’m in a 79 Ramcharger on 35s, rear LSD and Aussie locker in my front 44. So a few tight areas may pin stripe my old paint. But if a JK/JL/JT fits I should be fine. About to install a new wiring harness, hope to have it ready in August or Sept. 360 magnum/nv4500 from a 2000 Ram 2500, CJ Dana 300 and part time axles from a 83 W150 (4.56 gears) make a wheel rounded rig. My experience is all out west, CA, NV, AZ, UT, CO and Baja.
@@SimplyMustGo it was my very first trail ride in a vehicle. Multiple trail rides on ATVs growing up and I’ve owned a Bronco II on 44’s but never took it off-road. It’s a place I will come back to again for sure. There’s a few other good trails on the other side of the I-40 from Hurricane Creek. They are not as technical but very fun to ride and the view from the mountain top is gorgeous.
@@SimplyMustGo the Bronco performed flawlessly and did everything in mostly 2wd. I did decide to take the detour and go through the deep mud pits by the old school bus. 4wd with both lockers and trail turn assist made it a piece of cake!!!
Where does this come out and how far is the end of the trail to Pigeon Forge, TN. Thinking of hitting this trail of my way to Pigeon Forge this summer.
The loop we did brought us back to 40. There is another option that will bring you up to Max Patch. I haven’t done that section before though. It’s on my list for sure.
I love that trail. I took it in a stock 1984 f-150 300 I6 pulling a 90’s model K1500 with a blown out front chunk. With a 6 month old baby wife and the people we pulled out of the trail. Ready to take my Bronco this time.
Yeah. I didn’t disconnect them only because I didn’t think it was needed and I was trying to use as few “rubicon” tools as I could until I knew I had to.
I’m heading to Asheville from FL in June and wanted to know if you know of a Jeep badge of honor trail nearby? I may try this trail as well as it’s me and my wife. Enjoy your channel and keep up the great work.
I did it in my 87 yj, but it does have a bigger tire(31s) and a 2 inch body lift to account for the tires, and I have also been re-geared. Getting lockers soon then I'm going back. ( Definitely waiting on my lockers!) Also, GREAT video. You're the only video that shows how hurricane really is. Thanks
That was my first trail in a tj with only 31"tires as my upgrade and it was so much fun. It was difficult with open diffs but with some spotting and a friend with a winch I made it through
I just bought a 2023 Tacoma TRD off road model 4x4 with the rear locking differential. 8 would live to gettogether with some other Tacoma and heep owners sometime over a long weekend to go try riding on this hurricane creek trail. I live near kingspoet,tn di o live close by to drive over early one Friday or Saturday morning to have a little bit of muddy fun.
Looks fun, how long did it take? I would love to run it some time. I agree, a stock Rubicon with lockers should get you through most of the obstables from what you put on the video. 35's appear like they would help too. I may have to wait until another time. We'll be headed from Jacksonville, FL to western Virginia and I'm not sure I can stick it in during the middle of the road trip. I think as Kelly mentions below, the most key issue is driver knowledge and skill and the right amount of caution. And while many trails can be done without lockers, it's still nice to have them when you need them.
@@SimplyMustGo Yeah true, filming does take some time for sure, but even if you weren't it sounds like a 1-2 hour trail ride, may have to park Hurricane Creek Trail for a different trip another time, but definitely want to hit it at some point. Thanks for the quick response.
@@abuck2844 Honestly depends on the time of year. Later in summer, when it grows in, there are some tight spots if you’re worried about scratches. But it’s usually fine. I’ve driven it 3 or 4 times.
I have 150 Ram short wheel base on 33's and 9 in clearance at the diffs and almost 11 in at the lowest point, but it is wide. also have a winch. My biggest issue the approach angle, but don't mind scraping the front bumper as their is already some trail damage to it. Do you think I would be able to make with this truck? It's a 05 and plan on keeping until the wheels fall off.
I want to say for the most part yes, you probably can, but I’m worried about a few sections. As long as you have the ability to recovery you should be fine.
@@SimplyMustGo Thank you I do have some recovery experience as I have a 12 ton winch on my truck and quite a bit of recovery equipment, I've never had to get myself out but I have used it for other people. I guess I haven't tried hard enough yet.
Could I make ir in my new 2023 Tacoma TRD Off Road truck. I have the crawl modes and the rear locking electronic differential. I also have gooodyear wrangler all terrain size 265/70R16 tires on it. We brought our TJ (Heavily modified) to the WNC Jeep Fest this year, June 2022, we stayed a full week before and we wanted to run Hurricane Creek SOOO bad but could not find Anyone willing to run it with us and was talked out of running it alone. For some reason, every local that we spoke to about it was afraid to run it, which deterred me from running it alone, even more than before. (Granted, many of the locals we spoke to about it were in Mall Crawlers, but I wouldn’t have thought it would be so difficult to find a local to go). We did run a lot of the other local trails and we had a blast! I wish I had seen this video prior, we would have run it solo! (I know that violates Rule #1, but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do!
It really was. There is another option that takes you up into Tennessee instead of looping back to I-40 and that’s on my short list of trips / trails to take.
Thanks for sharing. We finally had the opportunity to ride Hurricane Creek while in town for the Jeep Invasion. Unfortunately, a large (for fee) group didn’t know the trail is treated as one-way. A group of 25 coming down met three groups totaling 26 about 2/3 of the way up and created a mess. Our group of four turned around and backtracked to I-40. We will shoot for a less busy time on our next attempt.
You're welcome! Yeah, I don't get when people argue about it being a 1 way. You get groups coming in opposite directions and it's a nightmare. I hope you get a chance to ride it soon!
@@SimplyMustGo I’m with you. The two head to head groups looked like they were ready to start fighting. That’s when we decided to turn around. It didn’t help that two for fee groups had inexperienced riders and were head to head on the trail. Not a good situation. Drivers in both groups were not feeling it with having to back up or down the rail.
I have a 2013 jeep wrangler sport 4x4 with a 6speed trans and I'm going to put a set of 285/70/16 AT on very soon. Do you think I could do the same trip that you did. I love my jeep and going to have fun

Oh man. Good question. Generally I would say yes, you’ll probably get some bushes hitting the sides for sure, but there are 2 or 3 spots that I might be a little worried about with something that wide.
Can you explain what you mean when you say lockers I heard you say a few times i had to use my lockers I use to own a 1973 CJ with locking hubs I just bought a 1995 stock YJ they don't have manual locking hubs So im lost to what you mean Iby saying HAD TO USE MY LOCKERS Thanks and nice video
Lockers refers to a way of locking your differentials and or locking your transfer case. Basically meaning that when you apply lockers, either via electronic lockers, air lockers, manual lockers or something like a lunchbox locker, you connecting the front (or rear, or both) axels so that all the wheels spin together and the same rate. Without lockers engaged you could have one tire spinning and another tire not spinning at all (in the case of open differentials like on a YJ). Lockers basically make your front tires spin together at the same rate no matter what. Same with rear lockers. This is ideal for harder obstacles where traction is critical but would be awful on the street. So vehicle don’t come with their differentials locked, they wouldn’t drive well on the road, but off road where their is less traction they are often the difference between getting through a spot or getting stuck.
I'm late to the party. But the second week I had my JKU I went to Hurricane Creek with some friends (with built up rigs). I walked through the trail nice and easy with my drive out tag still on. Lol.
If you have normal ground clearance and 4x4 you'll be find. The creek crossing isn't deep. Just keep it it 4lo the entire time...less stress on your rig. Great beginner trail
Great adventure. Fellow SC Jeep guy here with an M 416 trailer overland setup. I noticed you had no plates on your trailer, no registration like the rest of us? Any issues going out of state with the trailer? I’m looking to adventure into northern Georgia soon.
Cause I've put the trailer through a lot and I know it can handle some crazy stuff. Also, because I didn't really have a choice. It's a 2 day trip for me and that's the only camping setup I have. I also know from experience that, with another vehicle there, I can get recovered out of most situations or have the bigger more built vehicle pull the trailer through a tougher obstacle, it's why the gladiator had a hitch mounted to it, just in case we had to make a switch.
The HomeBozs / Boz Inda Hood "music" was a definite turnoff. If i wanna hear that i'll step out and go to the Barrio of Compton or E. LA, Watts . . . ☆
Nice! Thanks for sharing. Question, I just got a new F-150 Quad Cab 4x4. I put a 3" lift on it and 34" Toyo's. Do you think this trail will accommodate a full size rig? I'm down near Greenville, SC and looking for some nice trails, water crossings, etc. to take my family on.
Yeah I think so, but there are going to be some places that are tighter and more over grown. So your chances of getting some scratches are probably higher. Also just keep in mind it will be harder to pass other vehicles if you encounter any going through the other way.
Neat stuff. I'm guessing our "Hard Rock Rubi" will be just fine. :) Thanks for sharing. Cheers and God Bless. ~M&E~ P.S. We went to Francis Marion last weekend and had a really weird experience with someone that claimed he was stuck and out of gas for two days in the swamp. He was only a mile from the end of the trail. Not sure what was going on so we gave him some water and exited stage left.

Thanks Kent! I appreciate that!!!
I’ve often wondered if my 2020 Subaru outback with a 2 inch lift and skid plates accomplish this trail I’ve drove by the entrance so many times
I don’t know. I saw some other lifted SUVs turn around after about 2 miles.
I'm thinking about taking my 21 forester
Took my 05 forester down it partially.. decided to turn back .. was alone..
I’ve done it once in a stock TJ, then upgraded to a 2” lift in the front and 4” in the back on 31/10.50 15’s and done it both ways.
What was your reasoning behind the 4inch in the back, I ended up doing a 2.5 inch in the front for the JKU and 3.5 in the back.
That sounds like an epic trip!!
Dude you have a stock rubicon ypu can possobly do anything following the correct line ! Great video !
Yeah. It’s incredible just how capable it is stock.
Yeah you’d probably be just fine! It’s a ton of fun!
Yeah you should be good! You’re gonna have a blast!
I did this trail back around Thanksgiving 2021 in my stock Bronco Badlands!!!
Nice! How did it do? I imagine it crushed it.
It's not too bad of a trail. I got my 2010 silverado up without much issue. Its a single cab shortbed, with a leveling kit, 33's and open diffs
Nice! I’m bet you had a blast on it!
You should go read the pinned comment telling me I was dishonest for making it look to EASY. 😂
Just added this trail to my “to do” list, looked awesome, very well edited video 💯🤙
Thank you! You'll love it!
4wd also allows you to disconnect the sway bar which makes a world of difference to the ride in addition to the traction.
I’m so glad you and the boys got to do this!! Can’t wait to do the HC myself. What an awesome trail! Great video too 😍😍
Thank you. I missed you on this trip!
I did it in my 87 yj, but it does have a bigger tire(31s) and a 2 inch body lift to account for the tires, and I have also been re-geared. Getting lockers soon then I'm going back. ( Definitely waiting on my lockers!)
Also, GREAT video. You're the only video that shows how hurricane really is. Thanks
Thank you so much! Your YJ sounds awesome! I’d love to get another YJ and build it up.
Looks like a trail that could have been done on my sons power wheel jeep. Hardcore
This comment too, feels like something a child would do.
You should go read the pinned comment telling me I was dishonest for making it look to EASY.
That was my first trail in a tj with only 31"tires as my upgrade and it was so much fun. It was difficult with open diffs but with some spotting and a friend with a winch I made it through
Yeah. It’s so much fun, but I’d make sure to go with someone my first time.
Did u ever say who made the jacket or make a video on it?
Yes, It's the Teren Designs Campfire Puffy. ua-cam.com/video/QDkRB4iA48M/v-deo.html
Finally someone makes a great video on this place
Thank you!!
Love seeing the Campfire Puffy out on that trail! Can't wait for the review. 💪
It has been awesome so far. Saved my bacon some too, the wet wood put out a ton of sparks and I didn’t have to worry about damaging my jacket.
Very cool! I wonder if a stock Tacoma can make it!?
I think if it’s relatively dry you’ll make it, just make sure you have good tires and go with a buddy.
It took about 3 maybe 4 hours. Took us longer cause I was filming. 🤣
@@SimplyMustGo Yeah true, filming does take some time for sure, but even if you weren't it sounds like a 1-2 hour trail ride, may have to park Hurricane Creek Trail for a different trip another time, but definitely want to hit it at some point. Thanks for the quick response.
Awesome video. Wondering if my new JLU Willys is able to do this.
I’m sure you could. But bring a buddy and recovery gear just incase.
Me and my buddy don it back in 2013 in a 2002 Nissan maxima. We came in from the top some how got lost and made it to I-40
Haha. I bet that was an adventure.
Done this trail several times in stock Gen2 Raptor. Lots of fun!
This wasnt too wide?
On Sunday 5/7/23 I did the parsons branch 8 mile gravel road trail heading from back of cades cove park heading over across the mountain to hwy 129 the snake. That road comes out several miles below the fontana dam.
I’m sure you could. But I’d always recommend going with a buddy (another rig) just in case.
Oh man! I was at WNC Jeep fest too. It’s a great trail. If you have a lot of experience off-roading and a good rig you can do it solo.
Man that looks like a fun trail.
@@TealOxAdv Ugh yeah. It sucks for sure.
Great video. So jealous of your amazing countryside.
Man. Rarely do we hear people say that. Where are you from?
@@SimplyMustGo Brisbane Australia. We spent nearly 10yrs in New Zealand miss the beautiful forests which look like yours from this video.
@@filthyoffroadadventures wow, I would absolutely love to visit New Zealand, It's on my bucket list. But I'd also love to go to Australia too.
Could a stock 2023 Wrangler high tide handle this? It does come with the 35in tires and decent stock lift. Only thing it's missing is a rear locker.
Yeah I’m sure you would be fine!
I wonder if I would be able to do this trail on a stock larger pickup truck? Nissan Titan XD Pro-4x to be exact.
Then, maybe, but this whole trail was completely wiped out by Hurricane Helene
@ yea I figured it would be much worse after the storm. Didn't realize it's completely gone.
I have a 2013 jeep wrangler sport 4x4 with a 6speed trans and I'm going to put a set of 285/70/16 AT on very soon. Do you think I could do the same trip that you did. I love my jeep and going to have fun
I think so. I’d still recommend having a buddy with you and recovery gear but you should be ok
Thanks. I'll have someone to go with alright. It's better to have someone with you and make a fun and safe trip out of it
MtnRoo did it no big problems. Happy trails
Looking to take on this trail when I go up to nc in 3 weeks I got a 2000 mazda b3000 5 speed 4x4 on 33’s I’ve been overlanding in for a while my only fear is breaking something and not being able to get out the way lol
You’ll have a blast, just bring a buddy in another rig!
Hey tell Brandon to check out NC Gladiators. Hope to see you at Smoky Mountain Jeep Invasion this year.
Yep! I’ll be there! And I’ll tell him!
Wonder if the trail is wide enough to take a 1st Gen Raptor through it and getting away with nothing more than a few scuff marks?
Lol.
Haha awesome!!!
It made me wonder how you justified the trailer if you were worried about the Jeep making it.
LA, Watts . . .

You should wrap the JK in Army green to match the trail box from TCC💪💪
Haha. Actually the trailer is about to get changed up to to match the Jeeps. 😀
Did this trail in my frontier without any issues. Jeep would crush it
Nice! Did you get a chance to camp or did you just run the trail?
It’s the Jurassic Park tee from target for me 🔥🤘🏽
Haha. You’re a poet!
looks like a fun trail. Definitely a little technical going up that rocky rooty hill. What in the world was your buddy thinking wheeling alone?
I think we was underestimating the trail. He was pretty grateful to have met up with us.
Great footage and that bus was cool!
Thank you!! It’s such a cool trail. I want to go back and do another section of it.
Hey I moved from colorado and I am having the hardest time finding any kind of guide books or anything for off roading out here. Any ideas?
I do in fact. I have a whole video coming out on Friday about where to overland in the South East.
Rubi is super competent. But…. That trailer is like an anchor in the tuff stuff.
I doubt a full size pickup would make it pass the tree roots area, too narrow?
I would be real worried about that, yeah.
Yikes... That's bizarre! Glad you got out of there ok.
@@SimplyMustGo Yeah, no worries. I'm pretty wylie and smelled something fishy. Our dog was even a bit disgruntled. Dampened the day but no worries. Keep the great content coming.
I'm curious if my wife's 2019 Jeep Renegade Sport could handle it, I know my built 05 Rubicon would have no problems at all
I’m be a little worried about some sections, but if you brought your Rubicon as a recovery vehicle just incase it might work out.
