So my Betta fish Swimothy wants you to know that you're pronouncing his breed name incorrectly - it's pronounced A L P H A. He's an alpha fish, thank you very much.
I am happy to know I did almost everything right. My veil tail is in a 10 gallon with Indian almond leaves. He hates his betta pellets but loves hikari micro pellets. He was alone in the tank but he is much happier with the mystery snail he loves inspecting the snail and swimming under him when he is on the glass. He loves Java moss more than Java ferns but he is also a fan of duckweed.
Thank you Lisa and John. Someone gave me a betta fish last year and never owning a fish before in my life, I wasn't sure what to do! I went online the same day and found your channel and got to work at creating the best home I could give him.. he's doing great! I appreciate your channel.
Just wanted to say thanks. When I got my first betta the tips and advice from your channel and a few others were such a huge help. Master came home to a ten gallon tank with plenty of plants and hiding places, he had a variety of protein-heavy foods, and when he had some ups and downs with his health I was able to troubleshoot and get him healthy again. He passed a few days ago at around three years old. I'd like to think he had a happy life, and you guys are part of the reason. Lots of love and merry Christmas.
New to your vids. Haven't had a tank since I was a kid and currently working on the 7th decade LOL. I found a 3 gal hex shaped tank in the trash on my street so took it home, set it up using gallon bottles of spring water since Philly water has already been flushed a few times and has over twice Fed levels of Iodine 131 since 2012. I'm surprised the carp in the rivers here don't glow. I went to Pet Smart and scored a betta a couple months ago and he is doing great. His name is Alpha Betta. He is a dark blue double fin Crowntail. His blue matches my 57 and 91 Harleys LOL. Dig all your info; thanks, bro.
If the natives are calling them BET-uhs, then I call them BET-uhs, afterall, it's their word for "fish". ;) Also, bay-tuhs is grammatically incorrect in English. The Thais have also been keeping them for 1,000 years. I think they're the true experts, not culturally appropriating, western boomers.
Wishing you two a Merry Christmas. I have to admit I was one of those people keeping a betta in a small vase. Thanks to your channel my betta now lives like a king with all the amenities 🤗.
I keep my bettas in minimum 5 gallons, preferably 10, oftentimes with smaller fish like ember tetras depending on their temperament. It helps to add the smaller fish first. I find bettas treat any new fish as "invaders" and try to scare them off, but if you put them into a tank already full of non threatening fish, most bettas will be peaceful and only occasionally chase the smaller fish away from food. Tons of hiding spots, preferably in the form of driftwood and plants is vital to allow your fish to claim a small territory instead of fighting over open space. And yes I'm talking about male bettas. I've had one I bought as an adult for 2 years now with neon tetras in a 10g, and another I bought as a baby that has lived with platies, ember tetras, corydoras, otocinclus, bristlenose plecos, and snails over the last 3 years in both a 20 long and a 29g tank.
Just to add. You need a filter and those filters must have a low filter rate, as higher flow can stress betta as they are not habitat to high current water. I personally lost two bettas without knowing. I have also read that bettas dont like bright light, but i am not sure if its correct.
Here in the tropics instead of heater, aquariums needs an aquarium cooling fans because when there's El Niño or it's Summertime temperature here rises up to 40 degrees celcius above so the water outside and inside houses are almost boiling.
One thing I've learned about trying to create betta sororities is that all bettas are not the same. I had about 8 in a 55-gallon, but found the smaller ones you typically find at a Petco were getting bullied by the larger koi bettas. I moved the smaller ones into a 29-gallon where they do great with neons, white clouds and aquatic frogs where there is tons of cover both at the top and bottom of the tank. I have the temp at 75 to prevent it getting too warm for the clouds. The koi are doing fine with rainbow praecox, yoyo loaches and harlequin rasboras for friends.
Mine is in a tank with Pristella Tetras. He has his favorite side that he likes amongst the soft leaved plants and the semi dark ,but likes to come out when I'm in the room and follow me around. I make sure he has a nice place to rest or sleep since they do sleep by laying down.
just a quick correction, tannins lower PH and KH, KH is a type of hardness, but its not the hardness we all think of, lower KH just makes the PH more volatile, when we say "bettas need soft water" we are refering to low GH, which isnt lowered by tannins, if you want to lower your GH you need a Reverse Osmosis system, or if you have a small tank it might be more worth it to just buy gallons of softer water brands (as Reverse Osmosis units can be pricey and they need their filters changed every year which only adds to its cost), check your personal situation
You buy fish from your local fish store. They live in city water. You transport those fish home after purchase. Then for years repeated same tap water. Adjusting ph or hardness is a losing battle. The fish is acclimated to you tap water. Most freshwater fish are raised vs wild caught saltwater fish. Both my salt and freshwater tanks are the same tap water. I live in Hawaii where it is always warm. I use chillers vs heaters especially for my salt tanks
My friend had two males bettas in a ten-gallon tank. Two veiltails, one red and one blue. Amazingly, they got along extremely well. They shared a territory in the middle, half the time there, the other half exploring the tank. In all the many times I went to watch them, they never flared at each other. There was no fin damage to either whatsoever. Even as a kid it struck me as dumb luck that they got along. Never mix males together! The odds of both getting along like this are ridiculously low.
I can't believe I just found this channel I love you guys so much thank you Jesus I hate it when people put bettas in tiny glasses I've been breeding bettas since I was somewhere between 18 and 20 years old and even when I got my first betta I never put it in a tiny little cup with no filtration and no heater it's just cruel and I hate seeing it just about everywhere especially in Petco and PetSmart and places like that 😢
Our betta came from a Chinese restaurant unfortunately they had them for sale at the register, we grabbed the only one that wasn’t on deaths door and added him to our ten gallon otocinclus tank, he does like to pick on the corys we added last month though, hoping the transition to a twenty gallon will help with that
Fish get selectively bred within reasonable limits to get used to certain water temperature. For example, I personally saw a 1940-s professional fish-keeping book published by a zoo that says bettas should be kept at a temperature of 68+. I understand why they wrote that. Bettas strains that didn't like that temperature didn't breed.
Regarding food, I always hear people say betta fish will eat anything you put in the tank, but my experience has always been my bettas are extremely finicky. Indeed, their tastes seem to change over time. My current little betta buddy started out loving his Fluval bug bites, but at some point he lost interest, and was happy to eat Top Fin betta crumbles instead. Then New Life Spectrum betta small granules. Now he really loves Aqueon Nutrinsects. But once he gets over a given food, he never wants to go back. Fortunately I also raise snails, so I can feed any left over betta food to the snails instead, they aren't so picky :-) Unfortunately, my betta also recently lost vision in one eye due to diamond eye, and can no longer eat flake or granule food off the surface. He wants to, but he misses almost every time, eventually gets super frustrated, trashes about for a few seconds in rage, and swims away to cool off. Instead he now needs bigger foods that he can more easily see and get into his mouth despite the blindness, and that means frozen blood worms and brine shrimp. I tried mysis as well, but he doesn't like that. Even with these bigger foods, he misses a fair bit, but with enough tries he eventually gets enough to fill his belly. Of course, I don't want to gravel vac after every meal, he gets super stressed at any gravel vac at all, but given how much ends up on the bottom, I have to address it somehow, so I have a lot of ramshorns in the tank (the pH is too low for their eggs to hatch out, so I never have to worry about them taking over the tank). I recently added some blackworms to the tank, hoping he would eat them as food, but for whatever reason he doesn't, but they are also detritus eaters, so that still works out ok. Despite the considerable amount of uneaten food that end up on the bottom after every feeding, the tank's water parameters always remain good because of how many detritus eaters are in the tank!
Thank you for the video!! Went through upgrades with first 4 ......had 4 5 g and who knows how many under 2 G lol. My fave liked to sit in my hand look at me with his adorable eyes, he loved his 5G upgrade. Hope to get a 20 G with a betta and small tetra/gold fish/molly community tank. Not so sure what to put with him, happy found your videos!
I know all this stuff, but I just really enjoy watching these types of videos anyways...I wish I could send this video to potential first time betta keepers that come into Petco, it would save me a lot of work as the employee trying to tell them not to get a tiny 1.4 gallon lol
I LOVE Live Plants, half of why I do betta fish is an excuse for live plants. I love setting up a whole little ecosystem, betta fish, live plants, a snail, maybe I’m gonna try a shrimp:)
I have my betta in a 6 gallons cube with heater, filter and heavy planted. I keeps the temperature at 77F. Funny thing, he ONLY eats cheap flakes. I have tried brine shrimps, blood worms, the little betta specific pellets.... he only eats the flakes. I have a few shrimps in the tank and he doesn't even look at them.
I have a question I am a new beta fish owner and would like to switch up his food every few days. I am currently giving him pellets but if I were to give him bug bites and blood worms how much should I give frequency wise? I give him 3 pellets a day
Looking for advice as apparently no one in australia can answer this. What do i need to do to get my males to build bubble nests. I have had one sucsessful spawn last year and have since tried over 50 times across 7 males and none build nests. I have tried PH from 8 down to 5.5, temps also varied water both crystal clear and tanned to the point of looking like week old tea. I have had males and females stay in breeding tank for up to a week together with little to no aggression ( this also is spread over a group of 10 females ) Botanicals ranging from katapa through Melaluca and eucalyptus. Has got to the point that i pushed so hard to figure out what is wrong that i lost my best male from depression as after a couple of tries when he went back into his stall he just gave up and died after three days of just sitting behind filter and sulking. Apparently if you ask shop owners or supposed experts here they just look at me and say thats not possible. So your thoughts please. :)
Hi, I'm a newbie regarding fish keeping. Ive got my male betta, now in with ember tetras. Ive gad him fir 3 weeks now, but today he started scavenging off the bottom. Is this normal?! He does eat from the top. Thanks Tracey from UK
Would really love to join but I can’t seem to get through always says I’m not able to anyway love your channel and if I couldn’t figure out how to rejoin I will someday right now I just can’t figure it out merry Christmas love you guys❤
awesome video as normal TY,, my question is in your opinion how hard would it be to keep A male mixed with 3 to 5 females, would there issues o not wise idea, can it be done in a 20 gallon TY for for any thoughts on doing this,,
Male cannot be kept with females because domestic males are bred to be unnaturally aggressive. But u can do so with wild bettas like smargadhina, mahachai or imbellis
Is keeping betta in cup an American things. In New Zealand they are shipped to stores in fish bags and houses in 30 litre tanks. Those little tanks are only available in the one big box store we have and don't sell well.
We adopted 3 females, one we name Aretha because she is nothing but attitude. I took too long to get the blood worms into the water and she jumped out of the water to snag them. That's not reason she was named Aretha, but just one of the many ongoing examples of her tude.
So say is a betta dies In a tank but I wanna keep another betta in that same tank do I just do a water change and it would be all good for the new fish or do I need to take all the live plants out, deep clean it and re plant it?
I'm willing to buy a 12gallons aquarium heavily planted for a betta. This fish tank is made of policarbonate, not glass. Also i would like not have a filter and that's why i'm planning to have lots of plants and get balance for one or two months before adding the fish. Do you think is good or bad idea? Would like to know before I start the setup :'3
Great video! I just checked my my water parameters and everything is good except the pH is way too high so I’ll definitely check out Indian almond leaves
Here in Bharath RO is safest PH is 7 and TDS is 130. Also 80 degrees F is spring cool climate here in down south Bharath/India. That's not warm😂 but for USA it is..
Best video I have seen from you guys. I would only add that , as with all fish, do not overfeed. A Betta's stomach is about the size of it's eyeball, and they can get constipated easily if you overfeed flake or pellets. Using a water rich food like bloodworms or brine shrimp can help prevent this. Feeding 2 bloodworms 4 days a week is plenty. Also, a male betta in a 5 gallon tank may or may not tolerate another fish in his territory. One of mine won't tolerate corys, platys....nothing.
living in the North Yorkshire England all my tanks need heaters it would cost me a fortune to keep my house heated year round certainly through the winter
My tap ph is 7.8, I’ve tried using almond leaves to get tannins and it ends up dropping my ph too low as far as 6 which drops my kh to 0 and crashes my cycle, what is the best way to get tannins and not ruin your ph? Thanks
Hi Guys, Do you think the sicce shark pro is a suitable filter for a Betta or too strong? Your video on the object shows a spray bar that looks very strong.
Muito bom nunca achei correto o jeito que vendem ou criam esse peixe por aqui sou do brasil e muito obrigado pelo conhecimento tenho uma pequena criaçao de kinguios
Why am I even watching this video 😂 I'm obsessive about research and I can safely say that I'm no impulse buyer. I'm literally saving up for a 200 liter (52.8 gallon) tank for the betta I plan on buying... And the betta definitely won't arrive until I've got the tank, equipment and plants. And have cycled the tank, and quarantined the plants.
Just rescued? A betta that had trouble swimming from petco. I hope he makes it!!! 😢 anyone have tips? I put him in a 20 gallon I was almost done cycling but will be moving him to his own 10 soon

They normally eat bloodworms and incests you can buy bloodworm cubes and defrost them in water

my bettas are in 40 breeders fully planted and they love it. i like using them for fry control of guppies and platies

Imagine how awesome it would be if you could keep males together. That would be a very colorful tank. Thanks for the video!
I'm 62 years old from the S.F. Bay area. Keeping fish since the 1970's. It's always been BAYTA!😉

Queria conselhos para criar um Betta, vou montar um aquário e quero cuidar muito bem deles

Great info. Learned a couple things. Thank you for teaching. We appreciate it.
I have 2 betta with 2 nano aquarium tank with some mate like snail, red cherry shrimp, tetra, octocinclus.
Merry Christmas and happy new year!
That black and white beta @ 9:00 was so sweet looking!...awsome video guys!...great info!!...👍👍
I seen one of those recently, they are really nice.

I’m ready to get my betta ! But I’m not doing live plants sorry this is my first tank. Everything else is good
Do you have a video showing how to set up a 5 gallon planted betta tank for beginners?
I absolutely love darkwater tanks too!
I LOVE Live Plants, half of why I do betta fish is an excuse for live plants. I love setting up a whole little ecosystem, betta fish, live plants, a snail, maybe I’m gonna try a shrimp:)
Oh and Merry Christmas!
fill the big blue jugs. you can buy one and fill it for cheep its soft and free of anything you don't want.
Excellent content. Every betta should be sold with a highly detailed guide. 🦈
I recommend turning up the temperature to about 80F. Im currently keeping mine around 83F but he has fin rot so I turned it up a bit extra.
Well,a lot of humans only eat junk food ,too😅
Thanks a lot for your videos, merry Christmas😊
Love watching your channel :)... I live in Indonesia and yes we do have a lot bettas....
I have a question I am a new beta fish owner and would like to switch up his food every few days. I am currently giving him pellets but if I were to give him bug bites and blood worms how much should I give frequency wise? I give him 3 pellets a day

Best video I ever saw on keeping Betta, Thank you so much ❤
Helpful to newbies, too judgemental, not everyone is an Idiot and most people know the basics. Unfortunately people learn by experience
Being from the uk I pronounce it siamese fighter..lol
Do you have any information on the floo of the water for Betas
Hi👋I'm thinking of getting six dalmatian mollys for my fish tank, 😄and I wanted to ask if a 🔟 gallon is enough space for them 🧐🐟
66 degrees?? holy moly. on super cold winter days my house will drop around to that temp and i find it freezing
I just got my betta fish on Friday morning love it I'm brand new to betta fish so I hope I do ok with him
I got an ad from Custom Aquariums with you on it, on your video!
I found that pretty funny so I needed to point that out
I know I already said it but thank you for bringing back this song! It brings back memories of when I started watching your videos 😁
awesome video as normal TY,, my question is in your opinion how hard would it be to keep A male mixed with 3 to 5 females, would there issues o not wise idea, can it be done in a 20 gallon TY for for any thoughts on doing this,,
Male cannot be kept with females because domestic males are bred to be unnaturally aggressive. But u can do so with wild bettas like smargadhina, mahachai or imbellis
What type of Betta is that starting at 8:50? That black and steel color is my favorite variant, other than Bumblebees and Blue Paradise.
They were siamese fighting fish in the 70s when I was a boy
Can you feed them a mix of dried daphnia, dried scuds and deshelled brine shrimp eggs?
Do cattapa leaves lower the ph? Mine comes out of the tap at 7. Won't it be too low if I put them in my Betta's tank?
Yes, but not too much. Try adding just half a leaf
Merry Christmas, John and Lisa!! 🎅☃️🌲🎁⛄️

im soon to be building a paludarium with a cave like thing at the bottom and i hope would be a good fit for a betta.
The Beta is awesome but then the VHS came out and was even Betta.
In Canada my house stays at about 20 degrees so I def need a heater aha 😅
Yep fighter is what we call them also I am from Trinidad 🇹🇹
Here in Bharath RO is safest PH is 7 and TDS is 130. Also 80 degrees F is spring cool climate here in down south Bharath/India. That's not warm😂 but for USA it is..
Thank you guys so much! I was just wondering what filter you guys use? The black one with the curvy sponge. Otherwise thank you!!
Put a lid on your betta tank as well.
I wish i had this when i got my first betta in first grade. Rip shamoo your missed
I like a 6 gallon cube for bettas
im getting a new betta and this video helped me alot!
I use easy life catappa x in my betta tanks works a dream and doesn't make ur tank look like a British cup of tea 😅
Does it matter what leaves you add for tannins?
EXCELENTE VIDEO.......ABRAZO DESDE VENEZUELA
Merry Christmas and god bless you and your family.
Live plants try regular plants like lucky bamboo or peace lily ec
living in the North Yorkshire England all my tanks need heaters it would cost me a fortune to keep my house heated year round certainly through the winter
Same with me. I’m in North west Lancashire and energy prices just keep going up. My fish are warmer than me.
66 degrees in your house!??????? I would fade away.
Haha.I'm a senior citizen a n d l ive in New England. Mine is set at 55 degrees.
That's a dope Sweatshirt Lisa!
My tap ph is 7.8, I’ve tried using almond leaves to get tannins and it ends up dropping my ph too low as far as 6 which drops my kh to 0 and crashes my cycle, what is the best way to get tannins and not ruin your ph? Thanks
I have driftwood in my big tank .That also puts tannins in there.
There are plenty of "betta safe" fish that they can be with in a community tank, and also plenty of other fish that aren't safe (i.e. Angelfish)
Hi Guys, Do you think the sicce shark pro is a suitable filter for a Betta or too strong? Your video on the object shows a spray bar that looks very strong.
i just learned its beTTa and i just got my first. thanks for the info
No AC in summer open windows unless it’s 110 and we keep it at 78 in winter 😁
I just watched Father Fish say, keep them in a gallon container. Boo to him
Muito bom nunca achei correto o jeito que vendem ou criam esse peixe por aqui sou do brasil e muito obrigado pelo conhecimento tenho uma pequena criaçao de kinguios
All the Small tank heaters i find are preset at 78° where is one that is 80 to 85
I pronounce “betta” as “Siamese Fighting Fish.”
I have a guppy tank, could I add 1 female beta to it?
The fish that you have in these pictures, they're like red white and blue, what kind of fish are they? What specific betta fish are they
what if i live in hawaii do i need a heater still?
Why am I even watching this video 😂 I'm obsessive about research and I can safely say that I'm no impulse buyer.
I'm literally saving up for a 200 liter (52.8 gallon) tank for the betta I plan on buying... And the betta definitely won't arrive until I've got the tank, equipment and plants.
And have cycled the tank, and quarantined the plants.
why your website don't sell betta anymore?
i’ve been watching a lot of videos about bettas most of them say don’t need filters
How do you feel about pet stores that sell a male & female together as a “peaceful set”.
Just rescued? A betta that had trouble swimming from petco. I hope he makes it!!! 😢 anyone have tips? I put him in a 20 gallon I was almost done cycling but will be moving him to his own 10 soon
