I’ve spent the last year in agony over how gross my fridge water was. Tried everything, even contacted whirlpool and they wanted me to hire a tech. This vid solved my issue. I took a straw from my compressed air can and put it in the end of my syringe to make loading the water line easier. You rock dude! Drinking water again right now!

It's crazy that there is nothing out there and the professionals didnt even think to make one! Glad there is one smart guy out there who is willing to take the time to do this for us! I appreciate it!
Thank you so much for this video. The first time watching it I missed the fact that I have to detach the water line from where it’s coming out of my wall after turning it off of course. But once I figured that out I put the vinegar on a flat container actually sitting on top of my refrigerator. I have a cabinet above my refrigerator like you do in your video, but my water line was not long enough for me to sit my bottle of vinegar in that cabinet so I put it on top of about a one and a half inch tall dish and it worked like a charm. The only thing I noticed while depressing the water lever is that I kept getting clean water which I expected it to be clean but since I noticed the level of the vinegar going down in my vinegar bottle I knew vinegar had to be in my water line. But my water never tasted like vinegar. So I had to take out my water filter and that did the trick. When I took out my water filter, the water tasted like vinegar so then I knew that it was all the way to the end of my water line. So I decided to let it sit for about an hour and I just set a timer to come and check on it. Next I’ll detach everything, reattach the water to the water coming out of the wall and turn it all back on. Then all I need to do is flush out the vinegar and put in a new filter and then I’ll be set. So thanks for the video.
Thanks for the vid! I did it and it worked! Didn't need to prime the water line with a syringe; I was able to just stick it into the vinegar bottle and place it on top of my fridge and it worked. Had to leave the filter in my fridge (GE) so the water dispenser functioned. Put a new water filter in after I reconnected the water line and flushed out the vinegar and water tastes great now! Cheers!
This was fantastic thank you! My fridge sat in storage for 5 months and I didn't realize a few things had been left in the freezer. I cleaned it many times but could not get rid of the smell. This worked the first time! For less than $2 worth of vinegar :)
I just ran vinegar through my fridge upon your recommendation to put the vinegar bottle up high. I did not have a syringe, so I just put my line in the vinegar bottle. It worked. Thanks!!! We'll see in a little if my ice still tastes funny.
Thank you for the video. This worked perfectly. Only thing I had to do was add a straw to the end of the dispenser and start the siphon. After that the vinegar ran through with no issues.

Thank you again. I did not have a plunger like yours, used a squeeze bottle and worked out for me. One more thank you Sir! Family is very happy!
Just a tip for everyone else I tried the baby syringe method and my line wouldnt take. It was completely unnecessary. You can just run the hose into the vinegar jug and push the water dispenser to get it to pull the vinegar. Also my fridge will not pump water unless the filter is plugged in so I had to plug it in to do this. I couldnt get the vinegar flavor out of the water when rinsing so I trashed the filter (it was due anyway) and put a new filter in. Water tastes so clean now Im not sure it ever tasted so fresh.

I didn’t see the point in draining and filling with a syringe… like you said, just put it in the jug and run the dispenser until you smell the vinegar let it sit and dissolve the deposits and then flush with water.
I've been meaning to do this and was not quite sure how exactly I'd get the water pressure and I had your technique in mind. Being a Nurse, I was like Duh, raise the liquid source above the fridge. In my defense, that's no longer an issue as we have pumps now that do this for you but I'm from the old school that I should know this. You gave me a great idea though, I may just take an empty IV bag fill it with the cleaning vinegar and this way I can apply a bit more force through the lines....or not.

Vinegar worked great as the cleaning agent. Thanks for the tip. I used the same set up as yours but was taking too long, so I used a syringe to inject the solution to speed up the process. It worked great.
This was the perfect video for me! We bought a house, frig is 6yrs old. We are finding more and more things werent taken care of. New water filter for the frig and all this mold came through the water line! I am definitely going to see if this works!
I couldn't get the vinegar suction going from the bottle so I used a suction bulb ( kind used for babies) and slowly squeezed about three cups of vinegar into the water line while my husband held a large glass on the water dispenser. I let some vinegar sit in the water line for about 15 minutes and it worked. Both the water and ice tastes great. I didn't replace the water filter. Seems to be okay. Thank you for your post. I wouldn't of tried this if it weren't for your post.
I knew there be a method. Thanks! Just bought a used refrigerator, water line looks new, but just to be safe, I'll be cleaning it with vinegar using the gravity fed method you show here. FYI, the syringe you used can be purchased at most drug stores. Now I just need to find where to purchase the cleaning vinegar. Thanks again.
@@craign.1751 No, it's not strong enough. You want vinegar made for cleaning, it has a higher acid content. I got mine at Home Depot in the section where they sell cleaning supplies.
@@87Rado I know it weaker, but white vinegar is actually strong enough. I even dilute it 50/50 with water as a household cleaner. Works great. Just have to stop and let it soak several times during the process.
I would never have thought to do this but it is a perfectly good solution. I think I would put a cutoff on the hose as well as a little clean out T below that where I could add a short length of pipe to be able to use a funnel to slowly pour the vinegar into the line. This is so good. I haven't looked yet, but I am hopeful you did more than this one video. You have a great mind for thinking outside the box. Appreciate your help. Jesus bless.
Just got done trying this out. We have a Maytag double door with drawer freezer model. The water intake is at the bottom so we weren’t able to get the suction going. Used the baby syringe to put about a half a liter in and ran it through until it was dispensing then vinegar from the water spout. Let it sit for 15 minutes. Hooked the water back up and dispensed about a cup and let it sit for another 15 to ensure the vinegar was all the way through the system. Let sit for 15 min. We didn’t notice any particles coming out, but the pressure might be a smidge better. Had to run over 10 liters of water through the fridge to get rid of the vinegar taste in the water though.
Very helpful. Thank you. My fridge has been sitting for over a year without water running through it... I plumbed the water filter pipe to the fridge this week, when I looked at the water from the fridge it was light brown in color. I definitely need to flush it out.
Thank you for this video! We live on a well and have to by-pass our filter on our fridge, but now after 4 years our fridge has slowed it's water output. I'm going to try this today, I hope it works. I'll try and come back here and update my comment if it worked or not.
No need for the syringe. Just unhook the water line from the wall without letting the water drain from the line. Stick the water line in the vinegar jug and set it on top of the fridge or in the cabinet above the fridge. Press the water dispenser flap and the water will draw the vinegar from the bottle.
Thank you, at least I got an honest guy, and you have the same knowledge as me, and can't spend all that money for something so simple. I appreciate you 😊
You should post more videos like this. I may try a pressurized vinegar system like a new hand pump sprayer bottle if I can seal it to the input water line. Thanks for the info!
Hey man. I have a used fridge that's been sitting a while so before we hook it up to the water line, I want to flush the lines in case of mold. Thanks for having a video on that because it's seemingly impossible to find. A question I have is that when you removed the water filter in the fridge, there was still a connection in the plumbing? It didn't leak into the fridge?
Our fridge needs a "bypass filter" to keep running. It comes with the fridge and is just a flat piece of plastic that fits into the filter's space. So don't throw it away, even if you think you'll never use it! Thank you for the detailed instructions on how to clean the water line! 👍👍👍
How about removing the water filter, emptying the water out and fill it back with vinegar...run a few gallons of water...then replace with new filter...maybe for maintenance , every time filter needs replacing...
This didn’t work for me, but gave me the idea to fill a 25’ line with vinegar and attach it between the fridge line and the line from the wall with Sharkbite connectors. I let enough water out of the dispenser until it was only vinegar in the fridge, and let it soak. Cleared up the water taste issue I was having, with a total cost of less than $15.
@@makenziesmith2166 good to know. The higher you put the vinegar and the more vinegar in the jug (as long as the tip of the hose is at the bottom) the more pressure there will be in the line. It's similar to how a water tower works. I'm glad you found a solution that works for you. Just thought I'd clarify for anybody reading.
I initially could not "inject" the vinegar with the syringe. If anyone else runs into this problem, it turns out that my GE needs to have a V-shaped plastic piece inserted (which is included with the refrig) into the filter holder in order for the filter to be bypassed. If you insert this piece, it bypasses the filter connection and the gravity feed from the vinegar bottle will work.At least this worked for me.
damnn and I was wondering why our fridge water tasted nasty after having it for a year constantly changing filters with no problem ... we got a new filter thinking the taste would go back to normal but it stayed the same and I think it’s because after moving the waterline got filthy particles in it maybe from the water source it was connected to in the wall. Gonna try this to see if it helps
Another solution is to take a new fridge water filter, fill it with white vinegar, install it, and run water pressure just until the vinegar runs into a glass. Let this sit for half hour. Now run a couple gallons thru the system until the smell/funk is gone. Also empty ice bin and clean with a vinegar solution. Taste the water and it should taste fresh and clean. This does not clean the water line from the wall to the filter as in this video, but usually the odor is bacteria in the filter and/or the water reservoir and lines feeding the ice maker and water dispenser.
I want to try this but my fridge's water dispenser doesnt dispense unless I have the filter in. I was trying not to use the filter as its new. Any suggestions?
There should be a little bypass piece that came with your fridge. If you don't have it anymore then you should be able to buy one. Im not sure, but I believe they're cheap since it's just a piece of plastic
Will this clean the white slim that is coming from the water dispenser? FYI- Just bought a house with a new fridge and the people were not that clean. Checked all other water outlets and no white slim, so thinking this may help. Anyone else have the white slim come from the water dispenser and this fix it?
I can't tell you for sure, but what I would suggest that you do a few cycles. If you can find a stronger cleaner that's safe for your fridge then maybe give that a try too. Either way, let us know what you did and if it worked
I did something else. Its tedious, but easier than this. I just run the water out in cup fulls for like 20 mins and I guess it just cleaned out the line of junk. However, should it happen again ill try this.
I haven't tried it myself, but it stands to reason that as long as the pressure is great enough to make it that high (you may need to find a higher place to place your vinegar) then it should work. People in the comments have seemed to confirm this. Make sure your ice maker is trying to make ice (metal handle in the down position), the filter is out to remove any extra resistance, and let it run for a while. Let me know if it's successful so others can also benefit.
Hope it helps. My water line goes through the floor as well. It connects to the main water pipe in the utilities room. You just have to close the valve, unscrew it, and pull it through the floor.
Depends on your fridge. Some will re route it automatically once the filter is out, others require a plastic Attachment that would have come with your fridge. I assume you can get one for your fridge online if you don't already have it. I would make sure you get one specific to your fridge
im struggling here man. i disconnect water supply line from wall valve. I stand up on chair and begin syringing vinegar into water line. i keep going until bubbles stop but vinegar begins to spew out. once it spews i flip into bottle of vinegar. then nothing happens. am i supposed to push the dispense button on the fridge while valve is in vinegar or just let it stay in assuming the vaccuum pressure is working?
It spewing out sounds like a large bubble coming up. There's no reason for it to do that with no air in the line. It might be worth it to turn the fridge water on while doing this, but you'd have to try to know for sure.
Dude it totally finally worked. Here is what I I didn't understand. Once I fill line and flip upside down, u literally have to do nothing for about 15 minutes. Once I came back to fridge I then began dispensing like normal and slowly the entire vinegar bottle got sucked in! You are the man!!!!
So mine automatically bypassed the water filter if it's not in. I've heard from others in the comments that their fridge came with a bypass attachment that they put in
Just had 2 black ice cubes in my ice bin, noticed after seeing sediment in the bottom of my water cup thingy. Fkn gross. I'm guessing some flushing was needed for the new filter put in? That was like 2 weeks ago. Wtf?
@@colewarner but how do you know? I'm worried you can't physically see the mould being removed from the pipes? Thinking to remove all the pipes and put new ones in.
You had me at hey .. you had me at hey. My water line is stopped up .. the ice maker works fine but the door will not dispense water when I try to fill my glass.
My problem is the clear hose that comes out the front. It’s green. :(. I don’t know if this is the same. Is there someone I can pay to come do this? I am a 1 hammer girl. :(.

Sir you did great,, you got the job done,,, i could not even think of this, better than me you did,,, good job
Thank you very much 😊
This didn’t work for me, but gave me the idea to fill a 25’ line with vinegar and attach it between the fridge line and the line from the wall with Sharkbite connectors. I let enough water out of the dispenser until it was only vinegar in the fridge, and let it soak. Cleared up the water taste issue I was having, with a total cost of less than $15.
What part of it didn't work for you? Thanks for posting an alternate idea for those who can't get it to work
Cole Warner gravity didn’t seem to give it enough pressure to flow trough the fridge, but I did use the concept to siphon the vinegar into the tube
Cole Warner - Good to know. Thanks for the video, which I would have found it before I swapped out other parts!
Thanks! This worked perfectly! That is a clever, easy solution.
Look useful information ma. Thank you and I didn't think that would create enough suction but sure enough. I'll eat my hat to that
Hey quick question. How much vinegar did it take to start coming out the dispenser? I’m buying 1 liter bottles tomorrow for this
One liter was more than enough for me. It wiill differ by maker, but the lines are really small, so it shouldn't take much.
Very clever. I tried it and it worked. Thanks for the idea.
Happy to help
Not sure if anyone has said this - you can use a cheap circulation pump like is used to clean a tankless water heater.
damnn and I was wondering why our fridge water tasted nasty after having it for a year constantly changing filters with no problem ... we got a new filter thinking the taste would go back to normal but it stayed the same and I think it’s because after moving the waterline got filthy particles in it maybe from the water source it was connected to in the wall. Gonna try this to see if it helps
Curious if this help with your water.
I want to subscribe only because you said not to. Yet had the perfect video of just what I needed.
Well i haven't released a video since then, so I don't know how beneficial it would be for you. But don't let me keep you from chasing your dreams
Vinegar! The universal cleaning agent.
thanks going to try this. seems like a good idea. im getting white flakes out my dispenser hope this will help
Did it help? Mines is getting flakes too.
Thanks Normal Dude. It really helped.
Cole, I'm gonna need some more hot chocolate brother.
I'm gonna need an address for that one
Telling me not to subscribe made me want to 😂
Lol it may be another few years before I think of something novel enough to make a video for again. But maybe your patience will pay off 😂
Cole, did you have a compression fitting on the coil line? How did you get that syringe(plunger) to create a suction?
Sam Ficic said to put a straw on the dispences tube and suck it. Read above your comment.
Thanks man, just did this and it worked great!
Go to a supply house chain and order ice machine cleaner. Food safe.

You sir are a saint. Thank you!
I will give this a try thank you so much 👍🏼👍🏼
Welcome 😊
Nice job Sir. Worked for me. Thanks!
Worked great. Thank you!!!
Just ordered one for my kenmore from amazon.
It worked thank you so much. I cancelled the service call.
Good stuff man. Glad I could be of service
Thanks. About to do this myself.
Trying it tonight. Subscribed
I'm just glad to see you survived the snowboard crash landing. I'll try this at home. Thanks!
🤣 for the last 14 years I've blamed every memory problem I've had on the concussion I got in that crash
This looks like a great fix.. but also a lot of work! Hahaha Thanks for the idea .
It's about as easy as you will get if you want to continue using your fridge water as far as I can tell
Thanks, greatly appreciate your video !!
Thanks SO much for making this video!!
Thank you for sharing , this was very helpful:)
This worked perfect!!!! thank you for this Video!!!
Thank you sir, helped me out👍
Does this clean out the lines conected to the ice maker ?
I haven't tried it myself, but it stands to reason that as long as the pressure is great enough to make it that high (you may need to find a higher place to place your vinegar) then it should work. People in the comments have seemed to confirm this. Make sure your ice maker is trying to make ice (metal handle in the down position), the filter is out to remove any extra resistance, and let it run for a while. Let me know if it's successful so others can also benefit.
I’ll have to try this. My water line comes out of the floor so I’ll need to find where it connects
Hope it helps. My water line goes through the floor as well. It connects to the main water pipe in the utilities room. You just have to close the valve, unscrew it, and pull it through the floor.
Nice shirt.
Thanks normal dude good idea
One of the few 😂
Thank you for this!
I know this is an old post. If you take out the water filter won't the water just pour out at the filter location and never make it to the dispenser?
Depends on your fridge. Some will re route it automatically once the filter is out, others require a plastic Attachment that would have come with your fridge. I assume you can get one for your fridge online if you don't already have it. I would make sure you get one specific to your fridge
@@colewarner ok, thank you
im struggling here man. i disconnect water supply line from wall valve.
Also, try to make sure the hose is vertical and doesn't bend much as it's coming out of the back
Dude it totally finally worked. Here is what I I didn't understand. Once I fill line and flip upside down, u literally have to do nothing for about 15 minutes. Once I came back to fridge I then began dispensing like normal and slowly the entire vinegar bottle got sucked in!
You are the man!!!!
@@nubar5 hell ya! 👍 glad to be of service
One more like and you, a normal non-youtuber dude, will have 500 thumbs up!
It appears that I need to find more problems to solve 👍
+1 & sub’d, because, “Normal Dude” wins!
My freezer keeps over freezing and then the refrigerator gets warm. I saw the freezer out and everything is back to normal for a little while
siphon, EXCELLENT
If there is no water filter it still flows?
So mine automatically bypassed the water filter if it's not in. I've heard from others in the comments that their fridge came with a bypass attachment that they put in
Just found out mine has one also. Thanks
@@tb7246 anytime
Thank you.
😁
pretty smart.
Just had 2 black ice cubes in my ice bin, noticed after seeing sediment in the bottom of my water cup thingy. Fkn gross. I'm guessing some flushing was needed for the new filter put in? That was like 2 weeks ago. Wtf?
Definitely doesn't sound good. Try cleaning and running the ice maker with vinegar in it. Melt the ice and see if it smells like mold.
@@colewarner thank you!
Does this remove mould?
Yes
@@colewarner but how do you know? I'm worried you can't physically see the mould being removed from the pipes? Thinking to remove all the pipes and put new ones in.
@@DSS-Renzokuken a little research shows that vinegar is effective at killing mold
You had me at hey .. you had me at hey. My water line is stopped up .. the ice maker works fine but the door will not dispense water when I try to fill my glass.
Sounds like your solenoid is out
What diameter was your water line, does it matter?
I'm almost positive the size is standardized. So equal across all.
Make sure you install the water filter in the fridge or you'll piss vinegar all over the floor like me 😅
My problem is the clear hose that comes out the front. It’s green. :(. I don’t know if this is the same. Is there someone I can pay to come do this? I am a 1 hammer girl. :(.
You mean the clear hose that is inside the fridge itself?
Thank you so much!!!
Thanks for the video!! I really hope you're daughter got that hot chocolate
THANKS ALOT!... , and u dont need to apologize for anything ever, no one is perfect only God is.
Thank you!!!!!
I do what i can
What about the ice maker? Did it clean that as well?
You would have to turn the ice maker on since the line splits inside the fridge, but it should work
This is a job for my Husband…. Which I don’t have at the moment 😩
