Just please keep doing what you're doing, Katherine, these Transcontinental dispatches are great. And the more I see of these riders and their bikes, the more I like them. And they stay in hotels, cool--do they keep the little soaps and shampoos for the road ahead? I like those complimentary items, using a soap bar from a Holiday inn at present. And please tell Jon that these riders are like the ultimate in pimpin' their rides.

@@Tarmaccyclocross 5 years later, i think you could have a point with the crankset and the seatpost. Otherwise, i still stand by my judgement. But who cares!?
46/34 and 13-34 I love this guy. I’m all about gears like that. I own a 14-25 for time trials and a 46/30 crankset for hills.
And he said he would have gone even lower on the small chainring but couldn't because of the power meter. He doesn't have any ego about the gears - just wants to use what will work and obviously knows what he is doing.
You never get a tailwind in this race? Many times while bike touring I found myself riding at 45km/h with a strong tailwind. But with a 46x13 I should be pedalling at 100RPM to keep that speed, not very comfortable.
Such strong tailwind is extremely rare though. You may as well ride a bit slower and give your legs a rest during strong tailwind sections.
I'm watching the map last 3 days and James is in front whole time, not stopping even on red lights. He's allways almost a day ahead of the second one. What a guy! Unfair competition. He's near croatian flatest part. He'll go out of EU quicker than UK!

I've never watched one of these "look around a bike" videos to the end because I get bored - until now that is. Getting the *rider* to talk about why they've got stuff (rather than just listing out the kit), makes it way more interesting. (Yes, I realise James is probably a bit more engaging than some of the usual pros so wouldn't work with all of them)
James certainly has a lot of custom kit and it's fascinating learning the reason behind each bit!
And really, how different are any two random pro bikes? Events like this, Leadville, the Wheel Race, that's where the gear is actually interesting.
My knees were hurting watching this.

James is spot on with his thinking and setup. I have thought out the needs for gearing and come up with 13 28 to 34 depending if a triple or double is used. That is just one example of realistic thinking. No wonder he is a winner.

At 3.00 - getting onto the drops to relieve saddle pain works for me as well. But you do then have to avoid neck pain. Not peering out from under a hat brim helps.
I was thinking about fitting some mirrors on my bike glass'. Instead of letting me see behind me, I'd flip them so that they reflected what's ahead of me when I'm on the aero bars. That way my head wouldn't be forced to bend 90 degrees upwards, and I could see forward with the mirrors. A wonky idea, sure. Not practical, sure. But, it would be nice if a kit allowed me to not bend my head upwards. The pain really takes a hold after 500 miles. Day in, day out.
I love those mounts for rear lights, brilliant for bikepackers.

Curious of the choice of steel over carbon frame, weight wise. I personally love the steel frame frequency wise but I’m an odd duck so I’m surprised a pro level cyclist does the same. Good luck James, love your setup!
A great question for James perhaps... could be with the robust nature of steel over carbon for those mega distances?
Comfort. Depending on your routing, you may also find yourself on some gravel or some such.
Every edition of the Transcontinental Race has been won on a metal bike. Make of that what you will ;)
Exotic steel frames can actually be quite light. Obviously not as light as a equally expensive carbon frame. But that's not the point. Carbon is a much more delicate material, and is essentially unrepairable in the field. A steel frame can be welded by pretty much anyone with a welder and still be rideable.
An even better material would be a wood frame! Like a Renovo. Repair is wood glue and clamps!
They will dent on hits that would crack a carbon frame and you might not have to repair it at all. Fairly big dents and a steel frame are still rideable. Also for this sort of riding where you're loaded up with gear, a light bike is pretty much a lost cause.

Rhys Williams, err... every hotel I’ve ever stayed in rents by the night (not by the hour) and you can leave whenever you want. What kind of hotels do you frequent? 😬😂
As a frequent commuter/light tourer in the dark I love his light setup, especially the clamp mounted ones in the rear - it actually looks really sleek. I want to get some now, don't really use the rack mounts anyway

This is the type of bike that most people should be riding. Comfortable, sturdy, even practical. Maybe not for fast club riding or racing but for recreation or regular transportion this bike is near perfect.

a question for James (or anyone for that matter): I just rode a measly 120km in Germany and had a big problem refiling water, there doesn't seem to be any public taps and most of the cafes a) have only 200ml bottles, mostly from glass and most commonly sparkling water, b) they look you like an alien if you ask them to fill you up from the mains, most of them deny it. So the question how do you fill up? Do you plan that much detail in advance?

gute Idee, aber so viele Friedhöfe oder Tankstellen gibt es nicht auf dedicated Radwege, wir sind auf einem Teil von Euro15 am Rhein gefahren. Und ich in DE haben leider nicht alle Friedhöfe Wasser, in Mediterane Länder ist es ein muss, ich habe 4 Besucht in Duisburg oder Dortmund, einen frei zugänglichen Wasserhahn habe ich nicht gefunden.
Cafés that are frequently visited by cyclists will refill your bottles from tap water - but only if you drunk or ate something there. The others...yeah..forget it, will happily charge you huge amounts.
@mantis athans Very simple. Visit their loo. Fill up at the tap of the sink. I always do that. Always drinkable. And nobody ever complained. Buy a coke as well and nobody will ever complain.

Cracking vid. Looks like he's running custom mounts for those Exposure Blazes. That Rapha saddebag looks a load better designed than the Apidura version... although maybe that's down to poor installation of the ones you see out there.
Look like the exposure brackets made for go pro mounts, mounted on the rack bosses of the bike. Quite ingenious though. I'm wondering if he has another front light though. I doubt it will be easy fixing a flat in the dark having to turn the front wheel for the dynamo or with the little blinky. For that I have a backup front & rear light (made by Exposure too) on my helmet.
I'll be he carries a headlamp.

Hi, i'm just getting into long rides. I wonder how many miles/km these folks are doing per day? I just rode down the Korean Peninsula and absolutely loved it. Rode more than I've ever ridden and want to learn more about gear and setups. And tips of course. thanks for the video!

GCN Tech thanks! Mine punctured like crazy (4 times per week) after less than a years use.. really interesting to see these guys using them... And not tubeless (probabbly more hastle than it's worth)... or something heavyer duty... I went with schwalbe durano as winter tyres and haven't swapped back for fear of more punctures and extra training gains!
Yikes. Personally I've used them for 2 years and change annually, (obviously not covering as many miles as you Jon) on road/light gravel and have on had 1 pinch flat on lower pressures, wouldn't bother with tubeless on road. I think there are some other Continental alternatives for winter like the hardshell that may offer more puncture protection. Cheers, Katherine

Is there any advantage of the saddle bag over racks+panniers besides being more aero? I tried saddle bag once and for me it's much worse solution. At least for adventure, not a race...
Probably weight too, but lots of these riders won't be carrying much either.

di2 over mechanical for transcontinental? hmm
Good point. Over many days of long hours in the saddle, many prefer Di2 etc. as it reduces hand fatigue, and can also help if you've got a large handlebar bag that gets in the way of the levers. Makes sense really!
For sure. I've done some long hauls as well and your hands become very weak to the point where you absolutely loathe the long twisting motion needed to shift your bike (and thus shift less, often leading to inefficient cadence), especially the front chainring. James mentions loosing feeling in the two smaller fingers ("cyclists' palsy") which I've experienced a few times as well. With Di2 that pretty much becomes a non-problem. Also you're always in the aerobars, and it's a bit annoying having to leave the aerobars just to shift. The aerobar satellite shifts solve that as well. Every edition of the Trans Am Bike Race (similar to Transcontinental, but in the US and longer) has been won on Di2...even the current Tour Divide record (4000km mountain bike race) was on Di2. Honestly Di2 is even more reliable than mechanical as well, don't have to worry about snapping cables or derailleurs going out of alignment. And you can charge while riding from the dynamo charger.
