I'm autistic, queer, nonbinary/genderfluid and all those elements of identity are deeply interwoven for me. Being free to be open and authentic with love and social connection has improved my wellbeing greatly. I work in advocacy and advisory at local and national levels and there is such a huge momentum growing to recognise and support the double rainbow community. I have a lot of hope for where things are headed. Being visible and having these conversations is great. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️💛✨️

However, for many in the lgbtqia+ communities, it's a way of identifying with a certain way if thinking - that there are many sexualities and genders and ways to express those. In this sense, queer emerges as a term of theory in the 1990s but also represents a more activist point of view than gay (which was often used to mean gay and lesbian in the 70s). Aids activists from ACT UP! started reclaiming queer so it wasn't a slur but a way if signalling being an activist and being "in your face" to achieve the political and medical victories needed to gain access to health care that saved lives. Many if us wouldn't be here today if it weren't for queers.

Hearing the panel talk about their relationships was interesting. My wife and I are cis, hetero, yet we share a lot of similarities in our relationship, and I have to wonder how much of it is because of the matching of my autism with her adhd. Many people would look at our relationship and say it is abnormal,, but it has worked for us for over 30 years, long before either of us knew we were neurodivergent.

Just looking at the kind of comments being posted before the video has even started... it would seem as though the topic "autistic and homophobic" deserves some attention too. I'm shocked that so many people would respond negatively... then again, perhaps I shouldn't be shocked by anything in this world.
At least one of the commenters wasn't even autistic and was an angry mother of an autistic son. No surprise but outside of the homophobia and transphobia her deleted comments were also infantilizing autistic adults and trying to speak over autistic adults.
I have the tism and I like girls and I hate it tbh I wish I could be straight. I’m also religious so it doesn’t help no matter what I try. Thankfully I swing both ways so I can chose to date a man but the curiosity is still there

Such a great topic well covered by all. I will give my own response to some of the questions as a non-binary (NB), bisexual AuDHDer. Similar to many i am both late diagnosed and late identified as bi/NB. I came out as gay at 18 but did not identify as bi until my late 20s. It was not until my late 30s I accepted and embraced being non-binary. I more identify as gender non conforming as I do infact identify as a man, just a man who wears a dress. Prior to my current workplace I worked as a contract teacher, i felt being open about being autistic was a liability to getting a contract for the next year. Contrast that with my current position with the federal government I was employed through a autistic inclusion program, I went through the selection process wearing dresses. Supported employment i have experienced feels very safe, the fact that i did not have one box when onboard to tick do you require workplace adjustments but a whole process to discover what adjustments might suit me best. With regard to community I think where successful i have often connected best with other NDs even before i knew or they knew(perhaps they never do). I feel the NT lgbtqia+ community can be tricky
Dating was interesting for me when I began looking for a long term partner, I met my wife before I discovered my autism and NB. However I was aware dating was something I was not good at. What worked well for me was my now wife was not ready to jump into dating. We spent months chatting and finding connections so that when we went on our first in-person date were able to keep the conversation going.
Since I am not gay, bisexual or transgender, I did not realize that I was still eligible to be a part of the LGBTQ community until after my therapist had suggested that I attend LGBTQ events so I can wear the outfits that I want to wear like faux leather short shorts and a faux leather tank top without getting any negative attention out in public for it.

This is interesting, I have masked my queerness a lot, but much much less masking on my ND. (I was okay with being a freak, but not okay being queer (and in fact I think I masked my queerness because I decidedly didn't want to run with no mask.))
Being on the spectrum and being in the diverse community is very difficult. In my case it has been very difficult. If coexistence with neurotypicals is difficult with those who are also in the lgbt community... it is worse since I do not understand what happens there. I am a man I like men I am gay but I don't understand their behavior and it causes me a lot of conflict being on the spectrum,

Yes. I’m American and I’m protected under various laws which prohibit discrimination based on disability, and require reasonable accommodations under most circumstances. There are similar laws elsewhere in the world, though quite a bit of work in this space is necessary. Th UN also provides legal guidance conferring protection for autistic people under the definition of disability rights.
