25 years ago. The Replacment Killers with Chow Yun-Fat (first American studio film) and Oscar winner Mira Sorvino. From executive producer John Woo and Antoine Fuqua's directorial debut. That's a must-see gem.
Part 3 looks awesome especially since he's in Italy against the Mafia. I also did not realize that this was Denzel's first sequel however, he will be in Gladiator 2 (2024) but I'm not sure that counts.
Fun fact: The actor who plays Miles interrupted an interview Denzel was having on a red carpet to tell him he was a big fan and they’d do a movie together one day. Soon after he was cast in this movie! Also, Miles painted the mural. 😊
Pedro Pascal killed in his part but got damn, that twist that i knew was coming still hits ya know. My favorite part is when Denzel says "The mistake you made is that you killed my friend..... So I'm gonna kill each and everyone one of you.... and the only disappointment is that i only get to do it once."
@@matthewmolloy6803 You don’t kill a legendary assassin’s dear friend and think you’re gonna get out unscathed. Denzel is like “I’m gonna kill you and it don’t even matter bitch”.
Hands down best line of the film. Edit: I like the lead up to that part too. "What you do, what you become, is not my concern. The world is full of so-called "men" like you, and, in a perfect world, everything we do comes with a price, but this ain't a perfect world. People do bad things. If you're lucky, you get a chance to set it right, but most of the time it goes unpunished. This ain't one of them times. The mistake you made was you killed my friend. So, I'm gonna kill each and every one of you, and the only disappointment in it for me is that I only get to do it once." I love that little monologue.
Thank you Reel Rejects for giving the Equalizer franchise the spotlight it deserves. I hope people will realize how good these movies are and get excited for EQ3! 😎
I loved seeing Denzel and Pedro together especially as they are said to be in Gladiator 2 together!!!!!! I love these films, the fight scenes are just so, so great…
You guys should look up Denzel talking about racial tensions. He is VERY passionate with regards to his beliefs and stance on it. Everything he said in that scene is what he wants to tell every kid in that situation. I guarantee that's where his passion in that scene comes from, it's from the heart. Most powerful scene in the movie.
Absolutely. Blaming others is just easier than accepting responsibility, but it never makes anything better. People say well that's not easy. Well, nothing worth having ever is. I respect Denzel immensely. Check out Morgan freeman and Thomas Sowell as well.
Antoine Fuqua is extremely underrated as a director, he's made so many well made, BADASS movies and projects... The Equaliser trilogy, Training Day, Tears Of The Sun, Shooter, Brooklyn's Finest, Olympus Has Fallen, South Paw, The Magnificent Seven, Terminal List. Not to mention his work in producing these and other great projects. Training Day is his masterpiece and one of my favourite movies ever made 👌
Just an FYI, the final scene wasn't a "set." It's an actual coastal village - including the tower - in the town of Marshfield here in Massachusetts. It's called Brant Rock. It's a popular summer destination for those of us that like to avoid Cape Cod. My cousin lives in BR, and his house is in this final scene many times lol
they did a lot scenes for the first movie in Massachusetts as well. That Russian Castle at the end of the first one, was where I took my engagement pictures. Forgot the name of the place though
i don’t think he killed those guys in the apartment, you can see them all writhing on the ground. more of a Batman esque “he didn’t kill them just beat them mercilessly”
@@andrewdunn8778 You know you don't die from a broken neck right? You only die if it severs the spinal cord, that would be called an internal decapitation. It's basically just a movie device where the neck breaking thing is supposed to tell you that someone is dead. Edit: I re-read your comment and I think I read it wrong the first time and that you're acknowledging it and not doubting that he survived, sorry about that. But will keep the comment up instead of deleting it.
Listen, I loved the original tv series with Edward Woodward. Even more, I am a fan of these movies. Denzel takes this character and brings a complicated heart to it. Part hardened and business-like, part caring/mentor/helper, part broken deep inside. The biggest two regrets are that even though I am hyped for #3, it points out the finite nature of this character in the movies, and that saddens me. My second regret is that he couldn’t kill those guys twice.
What's really poignant to me is that Robert tries so hard to compensate for the bad things he did in his life but the darkness still manages to peek through. He met the guy's wife and daughters and still had no qualms about killing Pedro Pascal's character despite knowing that he'd be rendering those girls fatherless.
At the beginning of the movie, the bad guys make a little boy an orphan and set things up so he things that his father killed his mother and then himself. If Robert does not stop them, they will make many more children into orphans.
@@przemekkozlowski7835 Oh, I'm not criticising him or saying that he was wrong for doing it. It's just that his mindset doesn't even make that a question for him which makes him incredibly dangerous. Those men were dead long before their hearts stopped beating.
I agree with your statement but, it really holds no point. Pedro’s character had no problem in killing Susan leaving her daughter without a mother and husband without a wife. That’s why it’s Equal. Hence EQUALIZER.
@@TheGoodDeacon Not saying otherwise. Just speaking to Robert's own demons, that's all. The dinner conversation scene from the first movie always comes to mind when Robert asks the Russian what he sees when he looks at him and in that moment he looks dead in the eyes. My initial comment was more of an observation and expansion of a thought present in the film rather than a critique on Robert or even an attempt at making a point.
EQ2. Another kick-a** sequel. It just never ceases to amaze in having one of the great actors of all time in a well-honed action thriller. Fun reaction. Thanks. Pedro and Denzel will also both be in Gladiator 2. Neither of their parts has been disclosed yet. Pascal I have noticed dies alot in everything he does whether he is playing a good guy or a bad guy. Oh here's a tell for you to look for with Pedro - he is usually clean shaven only when playing the bad guy I've noticed. Try it for yourselves.
Melissa Leo hold her own against those intruders that were paid by Pedro Pascal's character. I kind of knew right away from the beginning as I started watching Pedro's character was the traitor and the buildup of that was done in the most precise way possible.
LOVED watching you guys react. Greg, you’re the best. I’ve never met you and likely never will but, I know you are a good human and it’s great that you aren’t afraid to let your emotions show. This franchise has been great and I can’t wait for the third.
The POV of his rediscovery of self. The first movie externalizes the equalization: the typical trope of leveling the field for the little guy. This movie is the leveling of the field within, finding pieces of himself he hadn't yet fully processed. The elimination of his old team, even Melissa's character, was the step by step erasure of the worst parts of his past. Really enjoyed this movie. And, while I'm 100% all for a John Wick, Atomic Blonde, and Equalizer crossover (an Expendables with actual depth and character, god forbid)... I'll also be perfectly fine with 3 being the end of everything. No doubt he'll finally meet his actual match, the equalization will take place from there. It's been nice for the 1st to have leaned light, the 2nd leaned dark. The psychosomatic pulley system they're going to have to use for #3 is going to be so, so good.
Robert said it himself. " I wasn't his partner. I was his superior." when talking to Pedro's wife. or something along those lines. if anyone knows your mistakes and the ones you're likely to make. it's going to be your teacher. but they're both creatures of habit. except movie one he stepped out of retirement. Pedro stepped in but he didn't refine his craft. even the way Susan treated Pedro says a lot.
Up until now, I‘ve never watched a single scene of The Equalizer movies. But daaaaamn, this movie is so good. I‘ll definitely have to watch it for myself now!
Nice! I liked this one almost as much as the first and the addition of Pedro is always a plus for me. People: never hurt anyone in Robert’s orbit or you will get gotten 😆
Pedro's character also was internally decapitated so he was conscious for his fall onto the rocks below. Half were merciful quick kills, half were slow and lingering.
He actually left all those assholes in the condo alive. The credit card just put a good cut on the head of the one guy, and he didn't actually twist that other guy's neck enough to kill him. He does resort to maming but not always killing
Yeah they showed the guy who had his neck twisted holding his neck in pain in the next shot. I do wish they had chosen different choreography against that guy, because in Hollywood logic neck twists/snaps typically = death, including just early in this movie. While I'm sure Robert could choose to only incapacitate people with neck twists in this universe, it makes it a bit unclear in a quick fight scene like that. I completely see why Greg and Coy thought he killed them.
Excellent reactions and insights! I am definitely not in the 2.5% commenters that asked you to “talk less.” So many things to ponder. A small one that really struck me was how the character of his wife is revealed: her glowing smile in the portrait, her cheerful Cape Cod bakery, the companionable chairs looking out to sea. Then you have to imagine how they balanced each other and how her loss sent him into self-exile and coldness. Here he had Miles sit in that chair with him for a while, mindfully put his wedding ring on his other hand, and is back home. He is open in a way he hasn’t been since her death. At the same time, he has finished the list of books. From what we saw of them, they were all about self-reclaiming, finding a life purpose, other things he needed to understand to be able to move on to something positive. Like you, I LOVED the whole subplot with Miles. The reveal of Miles’ glorious, sunny, hope-filled wall painting, his new confidence, all believable and so well done. It’s a balance to the darkness in the story. By the way, I don’t think he killed all the abusers in that early scene as a Lyft driver. I think he hurt them and broke limbs, but he knows the fine line before bringing death. If one really was close to killing him, he might have killed that one in a self-defensive reflex, but most I believe he left alive with a lesson learned.
23:22..That scene, "YOU DON'T KNOW DEATH IS", the stark intensity of those words gives me the chills everytime I see it.Denzel absolutely kills it in that scene and the whole movie..Outstanding Actor, check out "MAN ON FIRE".
Fun fact the lighthouse was built during ww2 in a section of Marshfield Massachusetts called Brant Rock it's located at 23 south street my family owned it from the late 70s to the early 90s
Thanks for the reaction! Robert actually doesn’t kill those guys in the penthouse. You can still hear/see them moving in the background after he beats them down. He’s so cold with it that he knows how to neutralize without killing!
If you haven't seen it, Man On Fire is another really interesting movie. Denzel doesn't make standard action pics, they have this more contemplative nature.
The CBS series from the 80s had a similar drama vibe, with pretty tense action for a TV program at the time. Fuqua and Denzel are able to ratchet everything up to 11!
I really enjoyed this reaction! I loved the atmosphere in this film - the weather build-up worked really well. My favourite scene was the villain reveal in the kitchen followed by Denzel's character using Dave's family as cover to leave safely. Brilliant stuff. As a big fan of your reactions, I'd like to recommend The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. It would be such a fun and interesting film to react to because it has Nic Cage playing himself, plus Pedro playing a VERY different role to what we're used to!
I think the main reason the film has moved on from the first installment is based on the original TV series. They linked back to the drifter aspect of the character and how he moved on to help different people. How they developed it further with Denzel was pure cinematic joy 😊 He is now the Equaliser and I can't wait for 3 ❤
Anyone who knows the Northeastern New England coast knows how accurate this is. The towns. The streets. The fact that the Tobin Bridge heads out of Boston to the North. The scale and ferocity of a **REAL** Nor'Easter storm. (Sorry.....Nor'Eastah for the uninitiated.) I was born in Lowell and I've lived on the Northern New England coast for my entire life.....50 years.
Robert McCall is the guy they do not want to underestimate him, and mess with and come after him and the people closet to him. Because if they do, he will come after them and ruthlessly hurt and break them leaving them broken and crippled for the rest of thier lives and if by choice kill them; ruin and humiliate their lives, dignities, and reputation horribly; and tear and destroy everything they have, desire and own all their lives into pieces and ashes. All of them both mentally, physically, and psychologically. He is their worst nightmare to them.
A lot of people don't know who Antoine Fuqua is, but he is an incredible writer/director. The perfect blend of action, violence, and emotion makes him one of the best. If anyone is interested in more from him, watch Training Day and End of Watch.
I really love this franchise and am glad we are getting more. its so well done, so underrated. also, that scene wrapping up the plot with the old man and the painting just broke me. it was such an unexpected ending to that, and so emotional. i straight up wept due to that.
I lived in that neighborhood for 28 years and while they filmed this, everyday was mostly sunny the editing in this is very good, if you want to see what it normally looks like not drying a movie look up Brant Rock Massachusetts, Esplanade that’s where these final scenes were filmed. I met Denzel he’s a super good dude
The way that he analyzes the situation before he initiates the fight is how Batman should approach combat. He is a master tactician and it’s time that they convey that on the big screen. RDJ did the same thing in the Sherlock Holmes movies.
I COME HERE FOR YOUR COMMENTARY! I'M A LONELY UA-cam GOBLIN AND IT'S NICE TO HEAR PEOPLE TALK ABOUT THINGS I ENJOY! Longer than I thought it would be but I committed to caps already.
I remember I watched this before the first one. Loved that they work really well as stand-alone movies but the stuff in the 2nd hit a lot harder after watching the first.
The film was fun to watch and tapped into a fuller deeper range that is meant to be immersive and interactive like VR or a video game without the actually VR visuals and game. This film was clearly meant to be felt like his autobiography. The audience is meant to understand the emotion of his training, past, psychology and being with him. It was a personal thriller while WIck is mostly a fantasy escape.
The speech that he gives to the young kid that he tries to help was improvised by Denzel and the Director gets along so well with him he just let him go with it
Your grieving observation, is spot on. I think the very notion of ‘equalizing’ implicitly suggests the scales are imbalanced and someone’s loss is almost always at the heart of the disparity
He always refused to do sequels, but the way this was written, crafted and directed by someone he respects in Antoine Fuqua makes you understand why he agreed to do this series. Listen, I love John Wick and the preposterous thing it is, but it lacks character background or reasoning behind the things he does. I'm very excited for part 3!
Agreed. John Wick does really well with stunt work, and even cinematography and world building as the movies continue. The overall writing and character development doesn't hold a candle to Equalizer though. Two very different types of action series, and both great in their own rights.
The benefits of being almost 70. The old man was Orson Bean. When I was a kid he was well known. Also the original Robert McCall was a 60s something White man with a team. Then Denzel as basically a loner, then Queen Latifa as 50s something Equalizer with a team. Franchise.
A scene that always breaks me is when Robert & Susan chat in his apartment, and when Robert recalls doing laundry with his wife, he doesn't look up once. Not until well after the thought haunts.
Amazing reaction Reel Rejects. I appreciate you guys showing these movies love because they definitely deserve it. Looking forward to the 3rd film. Denzel Washington is a national treasure.
Do people not know who the reel rejects are!? I LOVE the commentary and the back and forth between Greg, John, coy, roxy, ericka and all their other guests! They have the best reactions and discussions on anything they react to! They enjoy what they’re watching but also have so much fun while they’re doing it aswell!
Liam Neeson from Taken in an interview says he's a huge Denzel Washington fan, but he was obsessed with this series and he watches them repeatedly... This is Denzel's first sequel and it was no coincidence it was with Antoine Fuqua. Fuqua said Denzel has free range to freelance with the script which he often does, like his legendary "King Kong" line from Training Day and "When you pray for rain line" in part one. Fuqua said his only concern was it wasn't captured. The chemistry they have came together for part 3 set for release Sept 1
The kid from American saga on a red carpet he actually met Denzel on that carpet and he talked to him and he told Denzel that they were gonna be working together real soon then boom they are working together for the first time in equalizer 2 fucking amazing 🔥🔥🔥
Just finished watching your reactions and was glad to see this sequel impacted you the way it did. This is such a well thought out franchise. Loved the shift in the atmosphere for this one, and as you say, it's so well shot! ❤
I feel like the unique commentary we get through the various couples/triples per episode is at this point vital to the overall brand of the channel, special episodes I feel like could warrant even 4 ppl, if you could fit on screen, anyways, keep up the great work guys, love y’all ❤
I was really happy that you two reacted to the second one so soon after the first one! I have seen both about 5 or 6 times, and "The Equalizer 2" is my favorite. 38:25 Fun fact, flour is flammable when it’s dispersed in the air. That much of it, in an enclosed space, could actually combust.
I couldn't wait for them to react to this. Yes the listing gave it away. Please do Pelican Brief, Bone Collector oh goodness can't name all.😂😂🎉
Pedro's character also was internally decapitated so he was conscious for his fall onto the rocks below. Half were merciful quick kills, half were slow and lingering.
I love how he’s portrayed as a superhero.
This guy is Batman!
Very true
I love this duo of movies. Cant wait for The Equalizer 3!
Denzel as a bad guy in John Wick is something I need lol
John is a dead man. Denzel's moves are much quicker and efficient.
I want to see them team up not fight each other.
That’s not fair to Keanu, as soon as he sets his watch it’s over.
Excellent reactions and insights! I am definitely not in the 2.5% commenters that asked you to “talk less.”
So many things to ponder.
When he kept saying "shhh" when miles was hiding was very to me 😂
I forgot how strong this one hits, especially with Miles’ story brought into it. Totally agree with y’all here, really excited for EQ3
Perfect timing, i have not seen this one either…should be a good watch
Much goodness to you both, great reaction
23:22..That scene, "YOU DON'T KNOW DEATH IS", the stark intensity of those words gives me the chills everytime I see it.Denzel absolutely kills it in that scene and the whole movie..Outstanding Actor, check out "MAN ON FIRE".
Man On Fire may easily be my fav Denzel movie
"I like how he is more joyous."
Well, he is no longer working retail.
I felt that in my soul🤣🤣
I saw this movie first and had tk go back and watch the first one. Its a very underrated series
Fun fact the lighthouse was built during ww2 in a section of Marshfield Massachusetts called Brant Rock it's located at 23 south street my family owned it from the late 70s to the early 90s
"Things got equalized." As a writer, that was brilliantly written. Got a sub.
Thanks for the reaction! Robert actually doesn’t kill those guys in the penthouse. You can still hear/see them moving in the background after he beats them down. He’s so cold with it that he knows how to neutralize without killing!
I love your commentary and I personally am delighted you threw in even more commentary just to equalize the stupid hate comments 😎
Equalizer 3 almost looks like it's a prequel to man on fire..this will be interesting
If you haven't seen it, Man On Fire is another really interesting movie. Denzel doesn't make standard action pics, they have this more contemplative nature.
there is a red carpet scene with this young actor meeting Denzel on the carpet that was so wholesome
The CBS series from the 80s had a similar drama vibe, with pretty tense action for a TV program at the time. Fuqua and Denzel are able to ratchet everything up to 11!
I loved it when Denzel says in this movie “Its equalizing time”
I really enjoyed this reaction!
How they developed it further with Denzel was pure cinematic joy 😊
He is now the Equaliser and I can't wait for 3 ❤
For me, this film belongs in the “Best Sequels Ever” conversation. The first is great, but this one is something else entirely. 🙂
I'm so looking forward to Equilizer 3,
I'm rewatching the first 2 again.
Great movie, Denzle is awesome in these movies
Can't wait for the prequel, unequalizer.
Now go for the EQZ 3 trailer
This film was clearly meant to be
felt like his autobiography. The audience
is meant to understand the emotion of his training, past, psychology and being with him. It was a personal thriller while WIck is mostly a fantasy escape.
The 3rd and final instalment will be epic.
When Pedro shows his face, he’s a bad guy lol
The speech that he gives to the young kid that he tries to help was improvised by Denzel and the Director gets along so well with him he just let him go with it
Your grieving observation, is spot on. I think the very notion of ‘equalizing’ implicitly suggests the scales are imbalanced and someone’s loss is almost always at the heart of the disparity
Great Reaction! Can’t wait to see The Equalizer 3! 👍
Yay equalizer 2 ,thx for reacting love you two reacting together your a great duo.
Franchise.
I'm so happy you guys are doing the Equalizers. It's such a great movie 1 and 2. I can't wait to see 3.
A scene that always breaks me is when Robert & Susan chat in his apartment, and when Robert recalls doing laundry with his wife, he doesn't look up once. Not until well after the thought haunts.
both movies are great and very different. Really excited about #3
Amazing reaction Reel Rejects. I appreciate you guys showing these movies love because they definitely deserve it. Looking forward to the 3rd film. Denzel Washington is a national treasure.
Again how many times do I have to watch people react to this film lol
I can't wait until September when Equalizer 3 comes out.
Love this movie and strongly recommend the film book of eli for more denzel action
Only took me a quarter of the way thru the video to recognize the Kindgom Navy Street t-shirt. Just started the series a week ago.
Well Greg, to go off your hope for the third movie, the tagline is actually "Vengeance meets its equal" so i guess everything is equalized in the end
Choosing to patronize your local small business instead of using Amazon, just another way Robert is here to help. The Equalshopper.
😂😂😂
I feel like the unique commentary we get through the various couples/triples per episode is at this point vital to the overall brand of the channel, special episodes I feel like could warrant even 4 ppl, if you could fit on screen, anyways, keep up the great work guys, love y’all ❤
Yeahh that hallway scene with miles is one of my favorites from the franchise. “A man ain’t spelled G U N son” his line delivery is top tier
I see The Equalizer movies as superhero films.
I was really happy that you two reacted to the second one so soon after the first one! I have seen both about 5 or 6 times, and "The Equalizer 2" is my favorite. Love this franchise and can't wait to see the third one! I'm a new subscriber, and I've been going through your catalog and watching past reactions, and I'm really enjoying your channel! Great reaction and analysis, guys, thank you! ✌💙✌
I hope they make 10 of these movies
