Have to watch The Warriors one of my all-time favorites, that famous line by the way was a complete adlib, watched a documentary on the movie and they talked about that. I was a kid when I watched it and loved every minute of it. A movie that may have been inspired by it in my opinion is The Baytown Outlaws. Both deal with over-the-top gangs and it's amazing.
It's fun to note that, before being cast in this film, Kurt Russell had been known primarily for a number of squeaky-clean, family-friendly Disney films. Casting him as ultimate badass Snake Plissken was a stroke of John Carpenter genius. Also, the score is by Carpenter, himself.
In Kurt Russell's "Soldier" there's a computer screen displaying his service history, which has an absolute slew of Easter eggs in it, including awards "the Plisskin Patch" and the "Cash medal of Bravery" (Tango and Cash). But there are two screens full of references to Russell's career.
Agreed Kurt only has about five lines in the whole movie but his acting carried the story. A beautiful dark sci-fi set loosely in the blade runner universe. Sean Pertwee does his usual stellar job as a supporting actor.
Not to mention that some of his service record indicates that Soldier exists in the same universe as Blade Runner. Those little bits of information are not Easter Eggs, as it was explicity stated by the crew that it was a side-quel to Blade Runner.

The cool thing is Corridor Crew just went over the city wireframe effect on this film. CG wasn't good enough in 1981 to achieve a city wireframe, so they took a practical city model and used tape for the outlines, then used the negative, cranked up the contrast until it was 'glowing' and then ran it through a green filter. The only part that was CG was the little part showing the rooftop only, and that took forever to build.
A lot of it was filmed in St. Louis Missouri. The Chock Full Of Nuts was located just west of the Arch grounds. I was an extra in it. My two scenes were the station wagon ambush and the arena fight at Union Station. The bridge scene was filmed on the old Chain of Rocks Bridge. All the actors were very nice to the extras, John Carpenter was cool but a real task master. BTW, people falling down getting off a helicopter happens quite often with the lurching landing and the down draft from the rotors. Kurt Russell was worn out after spending ALL day filming the Arena fight scene. Adrienne Barbeau was quite the sight in that dress. 😍😍
thats awesome you were an extra in one of my fav films. I grew up in Saint Louis, my older brother kept talking about this movie until I saw it "cut" on regular television back then. I own it now on bluray.
Oh,on a side note, the character of Snake Plisken was basically John Carpenters' view of society. Snake was disillusioned by his government after fighting in various wars and well, didnt give a shit anymore.

Saw it when I was eleven or twelve. Got it off HBO and watched it every day for a month. Tried to write a screenplay based off of it. Could recite most of it by heart and can still do Jamie's opening narration (_never_ gonna forget that).
Kurt Russell's then-wife Season Hubley had just given birth to their son Boston Russell prior to doing this film. 'The Girl in the Chock Full O'Nuts' was her first role after Boston's birth.
Ox Baker lived in my town in CT after he retired from wrestling; he'd always have some little photo cards of himself he'd sign and give to people (mostly kids). Super nice giant of a man. RIP.
I saw Escape from LA first when it originally aired on cable and enjoyed it. My dad then told me it's sequel to Escape From NY which I hadn't heard of yet!
Kojima was a fan of the character that’s why in MGS 2 the main character of Solid snake goes undercover for a bit and his assumed name is Iroquois Plisken, a nod to this character.
Snake is another deliberate Man With No Name type of character. They cast Lee Van Cleef in this for that very reason to play off Snake much as he did in those movies with Eastwood.
I think I remember Billy Crystal or Gregory Hines on a talk show saying the title it was released under in some other country translated as "Running So Fast Nobody Can Catch Us."
It’s one of those things that, if you didn’t grow up through those times, it’s hard to explain how crazy it was to see Kurt go directly from a goofy, comedic Disney kid to this. It was pretty incredible.
NICE! One of my favorite John Carpenter action adventure thriller movies! The film takes place in an Alternative 1997, where WWIII broke out in 1985 after Russia launched a sneak attack against the US, destroying every major city on the east coast, except for New York and Washington. New York has been turned into a large maximum security prison in 1988 due to the rising crime rate. The state of Florida becomes its own government, having succeeded from America. US Marine "Snake" Plissken joined the military in several search and operations, until the Russians launched a deadly nerve gas in the Midwest United States that killed hundreds of innocent civilians in Plissken's hometown, including his own parents. He lost his right eye due to the nerve toxin, which explains why he wears the iconic patch. In 1991, he learned to despise the government for their failure for not helping him, becoming a famous outlaw, and the rest is history.
I remember seeing this back in 1982-1983 after it came out on VHS. Loved watching John Carpenter movies growing up. Halloween, The Thing, Escape from NY, Princess of Darkness and They Live.
Doing the matches thing is much harder now because of the regulations on phosphorous. White phosphorous was used in matches up to 1910 and allowed very easy friction lighting on most surfaces. These created the image of cowboys lighting them on their boots, between fingers, etc. However white phosphorus exposure causes serious long term bone issues, so everything was switched to red. Red phosphorus strike anywhere matches started disappearing slowly in the 1960s. By the mid 1990s were pretty much down to Diamond as the only manufacturer left; and Diamond shifted manufacturing to use the 'greenlight' formulation which is much less effective. Basically almost all shipping and transport companies listed strike-anywhere companies as a hazardous material requiring special explosive permits to transport unless the red phosphorous content was either reformulated or distributed to separate physical items (the strike on box). So really the only way to make 'quality' strike-anywhere matches that function like they used to is to harvest red phosphorous and make them yourself.
I absolutely love this movie especially being from New York City myself. When Metal Gear Solid came out for PS1, this was the first movie I thought of when I played that game. Kojima was surely influenced by this movie for that game. As far as the movie, this checked every 80s action movie box, and the crazy thing, this movie was the beginning of that type of action. I was blown away to find out that James Cameron worked on some of the background sets. This movie had such an impact on action movies.
One of the beautiful things about being my age, is that my can enjoy watching people react to movies for the first time, that I got to experience in the theater. You guys should absolutely do Big Trouble In Little China.
For a good underrated dystopian future movie I’d suggest Freejack. On any John Carpenter reaction I always have to recommend In The Mouth Of Madness, it’s awesome. Have the balls to react to Escape From LA, not very good but would be an entertaining reaction.
Great film. Great Music. Great Characters. My little bit of Trivia, the ‘CGI’ in the glider scenes wasn’t. The Corridor Crew did a good video about it.
Snake set the tone for 80s anti-heroes. The man with the tracker singing Hail to the Chief is George "Buck" Flower a staple in a few of Carpenter's 70s/80s films. Fun fact: Maggie fires 7 shots and by the time this film was supposed to be set some 7 and even 8 shot .357 revolvers were in production.
Without this movie Hideo Kojima would not have found his inspiration for Solid Snake and Big Boss for Metal Gear Solid! It’s why IF we ever get a live action adaptation of MGS Kurt Russell has to play Big Boss!🤞🤞
well technically the box art for the original metal gear game was inspired by Kyle Reese from terminator but yeah the look of Snake in the series would never been as iconic without the eyepatch and kurt russell line delivery inspiration.

If you buy the 4K blu-ray, it comes with three discs that include alot of BTS stuff and several commentaries. The one with John and Kurt mention that the blonde guy banging on the door of Air Force One at the beginning of the movie is actually Gerald Ford's son. Well worth picking up if you support physical media.
Once you see it, you can't not see it. Kurt Russell has a bum knee in real life. His characters often injure their legs to cover for when he runs with a limp.
Great show, great pick! A great movie with a great soundtrack! What makes me prefer this over Big Trouble In Little China is the movie's ending when Snake says something to the effect of, "A lot of people died to save you, I just wanted to know how you feel about that." It doesn't matter if the formula was on a cassette tape or a computer file or a piece of paper. That's when I realized Snake Plissken is the most bad-ass Carpenter character of them all. Even more bad-ass than R. J. MacReady or Jack Burton. When it's on television, I'll sit through the whole movie just to see that beautiful ending. Best to you-
@@votdfak Don't do that. You know casuals don't know this movie. Movie buffs like your basically hinting at that you are, are the minority. People just want to disagree, lol.
I get a chuckle out of the prop department keeping cost down. The guards are using M16s but they just stripped the handguard and gas tube from them to change the look. Snake is carrying an Ingram sub machine gun, a very short range gun, the prop guys stuck a scope on top to change the profile. That isn't a big phone, it's a field radio. I saw this in the theater since I'm old. I think before going in there may have been tequila involved.
We saw this when it hit VHS back in the 80's, still a great movie. Now when I watch it, I can't help but hear Chef from South Park when Isaac Hayes talks... lol Glad you two enjoyed it.
If you think the plane crash in Escape was weird to watch, just wait till you see The Lone Gunmen episode...As for the voice hes doing an impression of Clint Eastwood.
I love how he had the wherewithal to turn the station wagon around at the barrier and then crashed thru it going backwards….had he tried crashing thru it with the front of the car he would risk damaging the engine and the car would be broke down in the midst of that street gang.
Probably my all time favorite EFNY reference was in Grand Theft Auto 3. There was a hidden vehicle, a post apocalyptic Checker Cab called "The Borgnine." 😊
This was the first time John Carpenter had lenses that were good enough to shoot with natural light. The innovation let him play with sets in new ways that he took advantage.
John Carpenter is from Bowling Green Kentucky, his father lived on my route and he was home for Christmas, and signed for a package…. Really normal guy in person
Good reaction to one of my favorite classics. I just found some deleted scenes I wish they would have kept in. When Snake talks to Brain about him leaving him in Kansas City and Fresno Bob getting killed , that was actually one of the deleted scenes
I lived in the san fernando valley when they were shooting this. The beginning was hot in this part of the LA river. I remember seeing the set from the freeway when they were filming
Proud to say I live in the city where a lot of this was shot- good ol' St. Louis! Lots of iconic buildings in this movie still stand, including the current Schlafly Brewery, the Fox Theater and several other buildings. Legend has it that there was very little set decoration needed to transform downtown St. Louis into a dystopian hellscape of future New York. My town was in rough shape back then. The final segment of the movie is filmed on the famous Chain Of Rocks Bridge- one of the original Route 66 alignments that crossed the Mississippi River. It famously has a bend 1/3 of the way across, making for awkward traffic. Its a pedestrian bridge now, and also the site of two gruesome murders back in the 80s. You should check out filming locations on this one- its really interesting even if you don't live in 314
For me the most mind-blowing part is that the computer graphics during the glider sequence was done using a miniature set and bunch of florescent paint/tape.
fun fact: there is a 9 minute alternate beginning to Escape from New York. it can be found on the UA-cam It is meant to be like a James Bond intro, but, James Carpenter felt it did a disservice to Snake and the pacing of the movie over all.
Yeah the guy that was wearing the President’s bracelet when he got to that play was in They Live…he was the homeless guy who sold out and then later was wearing the nice suit and gave them the tour of the alien’s facility…
This was the movie that inspired Hideo Kajima to do metal gear solid. His method of entry was very similar to how Kurt Russell’s character was inserted into New York.
Other John Carpenter films to watch include Assault on Precinct 13, The Fog, Christine, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live!, Vampires, Prince of Darkness and Escape from LA. The opening narration is provided by Jamie Lee Curtis. An overlooked Kurt Russell film to watch is Tango and Cash

The bridge they used connects Missouri and Illinois. It had been closed for many years. Now it's a bike and foot trail. Chain of Rocks Bridge
I'm a synth/keyboard player and I've been fascinated by Carpenter's music for decades.
Yes watch Escape for LA!!
Possibly the greatest movie tagline ever:
"1997. New York City is now a maximum security prison. Breaking out is impossible. Breaking in is insane."
🐍
If you buy the 4K blu-ray, it comes with three discs that include alot of BTS stuff and several commentaries. The one with John and Kurt mention that the blonde guy banging on the door of Air Force One at the beginning of the movie is actually Gerald Ford's son. Well worth picking up if you support physical media.
7:50 - TOM ATKINS portrays Van Cleef's second-in-command, Rehme. He also portrayed Murtaugh's ex-army buddy, Hunsecker, in 'Lethal Weapon'.
Once you see it, you can't not see it.
Kurt Russell has a bum knee in real life. His characters often injure their legs to cover for when he runs with a limp.
The Prince of Darkness, you wont be disapointed! Great reaction as always guys!👍
Great show, great pick!
A great movie with a great soundtrack!
What makes me prefer this over Big Trouble In Little China is the movie's ending when Snake says something to the effect of, "A lot of people died to save you, I just wanted to know how you feel about that."
It doesn't matter if the formula was on a cassette tape or a computer file or a piece of paper. That's when I realized Snake Plissken is the most bad-ass Carpenter character of them all.
Even more bad-ass than R. J. MacReady or Jack Burton. When it's on television, I'll sit through the whole movie just to see that beautiful ending.
Best to you-
Lee Van Cleef: stands and stares intently.
John: He's so good at this! 😂😂😂
Please watch Christine. One of the most underrated movie by Carpenter. A masterpiece. One of the few movies adaptation that is better than the book.
I watched a mostly unknown John Carpenter movie last night on stream named Prince of Darkness. Guess what auto played after? Escape from New York.
Mostly unknown? Cmon now.
@@votdfak Don't do that. You know casuals don't know this movie. Movie buffs like your basically hinting at that you are, are the minority. People just want to disagree, lol.
@@DeadMuzan I am not really a movie buff, just average movie lover and that movie freaked me out as a kid.
Hell yeah, one of my favorites. Recently picked up the 4K. Sounds like a dope double feature
@@votdfak"Prince" is damn good, but it isn't one of Carpenter's best known works, so it's understandable if a casual viewer hadn't heard of it.
Have y'all NOT seen Carpenter's masterwork: "The Thing"?
I have the score of vinyl record. I love putting it on and just vibing to it.
If you've never seen "Dark Star" (John Carpenter's student film project with Dan Obannon), you really should watch it. It's an absolute blast.
That honking big walkie Lee uses towards the end was a dressed up AN/PRC-6. In case, you wanted to find one and turn it into a cell phone.
A legendary movie. Never gets old. Man, Carpenter had such a great run.
We saw this when it hit VHS back in the 80's, still a great movie. Now when I watch it, I can't help but hear Chef from South Park when Isaac Hayes talks... lol Glad you two enjoyed it.
They Live is awesome, and so is Vampires!
If you think the plane crash in Escape was weird to watch, just wait till you see The Lone Gunmen episode...As for the voice hes doing an impression of Clint Eastwood.
They Live is one of the most underrated movies ever, the premise is amazing. And yes, possibly the best fight scene ever 😂
I love how he had the wherewithal to turn the station wagon around at the barrier and then crashed thru it going backwards….had he tried crashing thru it with the front of the car he would risk damaging the engine and the car would be broke down in the midst of that street gang.
Snake's an instinctual survivalist. Dude is pragmatic as a mfka.
Love the Carpenter snuck in Jamie Lee Curtis as the voice over as Snake is entering the prison
Probably my all time favorite EFNY reference was in Grand Theft Auto 3.
There was a hidden vehicle, a post apocalyptic Checker Cab called "The Borgnine." 😊
Haven't watched The Warriors???
You need to watch The Warriors.
This!
"🎶 A number one, King of the hill, top of the heap. 🎶"
Coy and John should watch the Warriors together. Theatrical cut, please.
I agree 1,000%!
Yes, the cartoon inserts of the DC don't work.
This was the first time John Carpenter had lenses that were good enough to shoot with natural light. The innovation let him play with sets in new ways that he took advantage.
Wow this movie hits different today
Also, the computerized voice that opens the film and is heard in Liberty prison is Jaime Lee Curtis.
An immediate like. One of my favorite movies to rewatch.
Jake Pliskin approves!
Any reaction video with John and Coy is a good one!!!!!!!
Think I’ll wear my Snake Plissken ‘I❤NY’ shirt today
When I saw the thumb and it was you two, and then saw the movie title, I knew this would be fun.
Now check out Captain Ron. Kurt is a badass in this too. But, it's a comedy
38:17 - chandeliers on the car. Greatest car intro scene ever.
You should check out filming locations on this one- its really interesting even if you don't live in 314
Snake!!! Kurt Russell!! John Carpenter!!!🎯🤘
The female voice when they bring Snake in cuffs in the begining of the movie is Jamie Lee Curtis
For me the most mind-blowing part is that the computer graphics during the glider sequence was done using a miniature set and bunch of florescent paint/tape.
Big Trouble in little China Pls.😊 its soooo good and a huge cult classic. Kurt russel is the man!
fun fact:
there is a 9 minute alternate beginning to Escape from New York.
it can be found on the UA-cam
It is meant to be like a James Bond intro,
but,
James Carpenter felt it did a disservice to Snake and the pacing of the movie over all.
Russell's four best '90s movies; Unlawful Entry, Executive Decision, Stargate, Breakdown.
