I think it depends, a well thought out description can do a great job giving your players a sense of the world...plus most of us aren't professional voice actors :(
@@maxcompton3482 this is only my experience. I stsrted out being more descriptive and shy of making silly noises thinking the same thing; that I needed some kind of talent akin to a voice actor in order to sell the immersion. I've experimented with both, with a handful of groups. When asking for feedback, none of my players so far seem to prefer one or the other. Which is great. That was my response when I first found the show, "Four and a half hours? Nope, don't got time for that." Years later I lost my job and suddenly had time to kill, decided to watch the new episode to see if it was worth it. It was the Search for Grog live show. The first time ever when I went "holy shit Matt is good at sound effects" is when he made a screech (of a gaint bat like creature or smth) sound in an early episode. That particular one gave me goose bumps.
The sound he made for the giant purple worm creature when the M9 were traipsing across Eiselcross absolutely deserves to join the ranks of these legends
There was this one time when Matt made a chair scraping against the floor. I cannot remember the episode, but it was the most real sound that man ever made with his mouth.
Matt Mercer and the rest of Critical Role makes being stuck in traffic fun! I might be stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for an hour, but , for that hour, I am transported to the world of Exandria!

My favorite will always be Vax approaching the raven queen's lair, in the echoing hall, Matt brought it all the way down to footsteps echoing on approach. Still gives me chills, so simple but so good.

There was an excellent Raven Taliesin did that was so good!! Liam and Matt constantly impress each other at Sound effects. Plus there was Sam's Foley ad.
The unforgettable one for me was the one in Honey Heist 2. Matt produced a realistic face slapping sound with his mouth. I have to rewind and watch that multiple times to see that he didn't use his hands at all for that.

To this day, Taliesin's crow sounds make me look at the window to see if a bird has come in.
His crow reminds me of the cinematic intro to Diablo I.

Someone make a supercut of all the times he goes "GZSHH GZSHHH GZSSHHH" when a large creature is walking around! He does it all the time!
