- Wil Wheaton is notorious for consistently rolling badly - so much so that there can be no explanation for it other than some sort of curse. This video shows that curse in action.

I love how at the beginning they are like "oh, yeah, the curse joke, funny", but slowly they just witness it and suffer psychological damage in real life.
They were getting increasingly scared with each dice roll :D

I have a friend who kept rolling horribly week after week (changed dice, didn't matter, went digital, didn't matter) and we finally figured it out - he shook Wil Wheaton's hand at a convention, and has been cursed ever since

@@davyt0247 Oh im well aware. I watched his show. Even games that with dice that didnt use numbers, he rolled poorly. The curse cares not for the system or the dice.. If there are bad rolls to be had, he will roll them consistently.
Its why on his own show, he RARELY won the games. And not for lack of trying.

I feel like Will Wheaton should be given advantage on all his roles simply for being Will Wheaton and having the courage to continue to play dice rolling games

Wil Wheaton is not alone. I have a friend with the same issue. We largely resolved it for her in the following way. We got a nice narrow wooden pencil box with a clear front. We bought a set of dice WHICH SHE NEVER TOUCHED. We put them in the pencil box and permanently sealed it. Now she just shakes the box and reads the appropriate die type without ever touching them.
Wheaton needs to see this!
One corner of the table at my parents' place has been dubbed "the Chris zone" and no matter who sits there, it hasn't seen a good roll in years.

I am so bad at rolling that when I DM'd I thought it would be fun to implement a fumble and crit table. None of the players fumbled and the monsters were so bad!!! after a couple of weeks we stopped using the tables otherwise my players could just sit back and watch the monsters practically kill themselves!

I like the fact that Will at least owns his curse and finds actual enjoyment in the fact he is so so terrible at rolling.
I’m admired by the pure dedication he must have to continue playing the game.
I remember watching him play a game where the results were flipped, 20 was bad and he got so many nat 20’s it was stupid.

@@xendordawnburst9969 not only that, but this curse apparently is hereditary because all of his family has it now. Watch all of them playing in the geek and sundry show tabletop, I don't remember the name but it was something about mice or rats.
I truly believe to this day that he decided to make his character a veteran of the guild thinking that would be hilarious when he rolled poorly, by using his curse as a gag on his character.
Myself and a friend met him at a convention in 2019 and we each gave him a d20 and a d12. Amazingly, he rolled a 19 on the d20 and a 12 on the d12. He was so amazed that he took a picture of it to save. It was great.

Wil is a grade A example of how to make the most of shit rolls. There are people who'll bring the whole session down because of a bad roll, but Wil shows us how to ride the wave and still have a good time.
I mean after all the years of rolling so horribly you have to develop some way to deal with it

The way that Matt immediately broke out into that rant the millisecond the guy finished the question really indicates to me how deeply it affected him.
I just love the image of Wheaton's dwarf character being like a totally overconfident badass in manner, but essentially a complete liability to the party through his ineptitude/bad luck.
So a worser Gimli in a sense.
I remember in a later episode, when the party visits The Take, Thorbir and someone else were playing cards, and Thorbir lost another hand, and the guy he was playing against makes a comment about his luck.

The fact that he try’s to make the best of his bad luck, instead of dragging down the game and ruining it,is an aspect of Wil Wheaton that makes him a good player.

one night when i was having some bad rolls a friend said something like "change dice, change your luck" to which i replied "i dont believe in *luck* the entire concept is utter nonsense" - then proceeded to roll 5x 1's in a fucking ROW before rage quitting... i have never besmirched the idea of luck again.

The thing I love the most about Wil is how not upset he is. He never complains, he is never grumpy or anything. Every time he rolls low he makes a joke out of it and keeps enjoying the whole thing and that's just really sweet
He's been doing to for so long hes become almost numb to it.
Plus, there were a couple that he got grumpy for a Moment, but quickly got over it.

My first knowledge of the curse was sometime in campaign two when Laura is taking a die sent by a fan out of a plastic bag and someone tells her that wil touched it and she just about chucks it out of frame in panic

I have a friend in a similar situation who I gave weighted dice to. Imagine my face when she's given weighted dice and STILL has the worst roles of the session.

@@tomtedh5158 Yes sir, that is the spell. I was stunned by the dice showing him that level of disfavor for no known reason. At least with the spell there's a in game reason.
"Luck of Thorbir" - When affected by this debuff if you would roll a D20 instead roll a D6 and use the result as your D20 roll.
Ironically, I find Matt's conversion to a believer to be the best part of this. He starts off demanding an explanation, even getting Wil to change the dice, and is just flabbergasted... to eventual grim acceptance of what is the Wheaton dice curse.
i do enjoy that, but getting will to change the dice almost seems like an accusation of loaded dice just for the humor of it. kinda bummed me out, but maybe im just looking at it wayyyy wrong

@@declancampbell1277 I think being accused of having weighted dice to make you worse at the game is less offensive than being accused of having weighted dice to make you better at it. I know both would be accusations of dishonesty, but at least you're not being accused of cheating at the game to win.
@@declancampbell1277 I don't think there ever was an accusation. It's simply a fact that sometimes when people buy dice that the dice are just not balanced properly. There are tests that can showcase that sometimes a consistently low rolling dice weren't being used for cheating but were just made poorly in the mass production of dice.
It makes perfect sense to switch dice in the middle of a game where one rolls low. And since Matt traded the dice and took Will's, if balancing was an issue it would actually make the game easier for everyone because now the DM would be rolling low. I've done that as a DM and I've traded dice as well as a player.
In the case of Will Wheaton it turned out that it wasn't the dice and that variable was eliminated by Matt trading the d20.

When the crew had him touch Matt's dice before the fight with Kevdak the problem was that he didn't send out the bad rolls, he absorbed the bad rolls, making Matt roll higher
I think the most impressive part is he has a curse, knows about said curse yet still absolutely loves tabletop games and hasn't quit them hahaha

The Kevdak fight was one of my favorites. I’m in the 80s of c1 right now and I’m wondering if there’s a fight that’s better than Kevdak or Thordak. The was Vax finished the Thordak fight is something I want to draw

Having watched loads of TableTop as well, Wil's dice curse is amazing. He rolls low for games where low is bad, but high for games where high is bad. His dice defy all logic and physical probabilities

Out of 54 rolls, ten were natural 1s, seven were 2s, four were 3s, four were 4s, and one was a 5, for a total of 26 = 48% of his dice rolls getting a 5 or lower.
On the other side of the dice, he rolled no 16, one 17 and one 18, two 19s, and a 20, for a total of 5 = 9% of his dice rolls getting higher than 15.
I did something similar for the first two “Slayers take”.
I recorded all of will’s rolls and I rolled several control dice. The control dice had averages between 9-11, which is expected for d20s which should have an average of 10.5.
Will’s rolls averaged a 7, which biased HIGH because some of those include modifiers that I couldn’t figure out.
50 d4 with 25 1s. V(25%) is 3/16 A is .25. 50 is 150/16 or about 10, SD is 3ish. A is 12.5. That is 4 SD more 1s than mean.

My dad and I play a bunch of table top games, particularly Warhammer 40k and DnD, and we have both agreed, he is the person that Will is talking about. He cannot roll bellow 17 for D20s or 5 for D6s for some unexplainable reason. He is the Ying to Will's Yang. The Anti-Wheaton. Whenever my mates and I even dare try and face him in 40k, our armies are disintegrated and our souls reduced to blasted wastelands.

-DnD combat but when he rolls, we subtract that number from 21, and THAT'S what he gets, so he wants to roll low.
-DnD combat but *someone else* flips a coin to see which of the above results will be evaluated, each time Wil rolls.
-The above, but the coin is flipped AFTER Wil rolls.
-etc
See how distant we need to get from Wil's dice-rolling intent before the statistics normalize.

Watching Matt just slowly & painfully lose his sanity over Wil's rolls is my favourite part of all of this.
That being said, I want to just, be his Dice Scribe. I want to record the rolls over any given session & just study them. I want to figure out what's happening.

As someone who skipped these two episodes due to Orion being in them I wasn't privy to the sheer absurdity of the Wheaton dice curse. I thought it was a passing joke, something blown out of proportion. A minor occurrence that could be chalked up to simple bad luck over a few days. Something within the bounds of probability. The incomprehensible impossibility I have just witness has converted me. This man is truly and entirely cursed, and I don't wish his fortune upon anyone.
I found a d20 that is only 20s I feel like Will would still somehow roll a 1 on it.
Even on a flat surface the dice would still land between two sides
Or it will just somehow fall off the table and disappear
For him to roll high, he would need a sphere with the number 20 embedded in it a deep bowl such that the sphere doesn’t roll out, and the sphere and bowl don’t crack.
The same applies with low rolls but the sphere has an embedded 1.
Then you would need 98 more spheres to cover 1-100.
Finally, Chuggaaconroy needs to hold the bag contains said accurate spheres so it does not get lost, but also never interact with ProtonJon before he hands the bag to Wil Wheaton at the house where they are playing the game, and have another lucky person take back the 100 spheres without coming into contact with an unlucky person when the game ends, but not before they test the table, the bowl, the couches, the house, the community, and the weather where the game with Wil Wheaton is taking place. The bag also has to be rated high because 100 spheres could rip the bag.
Then Wil Wheaton will be able to roll more predictably.

I appreciate how he didn't go for a sorcerer or a wizard, someone that casts spells that requires the enemy to roll.
He purposefully went for the class that requires him to roll the most on HIS end
I do the opposite, in my group I roll really well (annoying when I DM and get 3/4 nat 20 attacks, using the same online generator as everyone else) so I useally play bards, which mainly make people roll against my save.
He came into this with something to prove man. They all mentioned that they'd heard about the curse and never believed it, and Thorbir was designed to show how a powerful character can struggle with bad rolls
@@SirFerrickWanderer I actually thought he decided to make an ironic character, where his backstory was that he was really seasoned and experienced but because of his rolls he end up being extremely incompetent.
I mean, you're half-right. Saves are a useful loophole, but if he wants a character to do damage he's gonna have to roll dice eventually. Few things hurt as much as rolling 11 on 6d8.

The fact that he was in for a total of like 6 hours of gametime and in a video dedicated to only his bad rolls, he managed to consume 30 minutes. Nearly 1/12th of the runtime to ONLY bad rolls.
But there were how many others rolling? Plus matt rolling enemies and such......

@@DeosPraetorian Statistically speaking, this represents a rather amusing and entirely impossible spread, assuming it remains consistent; ~50% of his rolls are 5 or lower; 25% are 6-10. 18% (I'd assume it ends up being closer to 15% with a larger spread) of his rolls are 11-15, and a meager 9% are above 5. The sad fact is that it definitely does remain consistent, no matter the dice, the system, or the situation. Wil Wheaton's rolls are weighted toward the worst possible result.

It's incredible to witness. On several TableTop episodes there are games where you *want* to roll low. Will rolls high on those games. Whatever is bad in the game, that's what he'll roll, virtually without fail

There's something I've seen nobody talk about regarding what Will said at the start of the video, he said to Liam: "I hope you're not attached to anything about your character" and we all know Vax's tragic fate, so yeah, the curse did get to him in a way, technically speaking.

I added a cursed necklace to my game to honor Thorbir. Any time a d20 would be rolled you must roll a d4 instead. Removing the curse is now the number one priority.

I have a D16, and I've been debating making it my "your character is cursed" die. So that way one player can never roll a crit
I love how everyone starts off chuckling because they think Wil is just being pessimistic. Everyone has bad days, etc.
Over the course of these sessions, they go from "wouldn't it be funny" to "haha, it's happening" to "wow, maybe you're right" to "how is this even possible" and finally to "this is honestly terrifying".

To put it into perspective: Wil Wheaton's Tabletop series was pre-edited, but he _still_ rolled consistently terrible. They had no good rolls to cut to.

I created a god of misfortune as a twin of tymora (or whatever god of luck I happen to use) named for Mr Wheaton.
If anyone happens to roll two 20s in a row for the next 24 hours lady luck is with them and they can instead of rolling choose to automatically crit on any 3 roll, once per turn in combat.
If they roll two 1s then for the next 24 hours they are in the presence of Wheaton and the DM chooses 3 rolls to auto fail. Rarely used in combat.
I genuinely went through 5 stages of grief while watching this.
Ah yes, the session that made Taliesin bring a smudge stick to cleanse the air.... and he still rolled a one that session.
He really should have gotten some preists from at least 6 different faiths for preform an exorcism on the spot to really cleanse it

It is more impressive that the curse can transfer a little. If I remember the fight correctly, he had an ability to command others to attack during his turn. Probably an attempt to get around the dice curse.
He ordered Keyleth to attack and then she rolled low on every attack he ordered her to do. I don't think she landed a single attack that was ordered by Thorbir.

@@ItsAnotherDanny Remember also that d20's have the numbers placed in a specific way as to lessen the effect of weighted dice. 19 is next to 1 and 2 is next to 20. If his dice were weighted to give him more 1's, it's incredibly unlikely for him to also roll this many 2's since the 2 is almost on the opposite side of the die.
Also in TableTop, when the game requires low rolls to win he always rolled 18s to 20s

So by the end of the Campaign, Vax had the most Natural 1s at somewhere around 60. That's over the course of a 100 and some odd change episodes.
Will has 10 in just the two episodes he's in.
Based on that math, Will would have rolled a total of 500 Natural 1s if he had been in from the beginning.
Additionally, half of Wil's total rolls were 5 or less.

Having never watched the curse in action until today, I am amazed... It's like watching a train wreck; it's horrible, awful, but you just can't stop watching it unfold...
Go watch his TableTop series on Geek and Sundry, he plays a variety of other table top games with various guests (always a pretty fun bunch too) and whenever a game involves dice you can see the curse on full display there too.
Having started watching Campaign 3 recently, I believe the halfling passive Liam is enjoying with protection against 1 rolls is a direct sideeffect of Will's existence :p

Dragon's Blood incense is something used in spellcraft as a power booster, of sorts. I use it when I need a major kick in the ass to whatever magick I'm doing. Combined with sage, that's essentially purging negativity by bathing the area in theoretical dragonfire. Tal was NOT fucking around.

Can I just say I admire the level of this curse's vindictiveness? I mean, when the roles were reversed and Wil was playing a game where rolling LOWER was actually BETTER then the dice curse literally said, "welp, guess WHAT? NOW YOU ROLL HIGH!" That's spiteful. I can at least respect that.

Back in 1982 or 1983, a friend who was running a D&D campaign showed me the latest issue of Dragon magazine which had an article about creating and playing a barbarian. I was so on board! While rolling his stats, I rolled 18/00 for his strength (how appropriate). But in the course of playing the game, this guy couldn't hit the broadside of an orc! Every time I rolled, I missed. Until, the character only had 5 or less hit points left; then suddenly I was rolling hits and often criticals. With his strength, he became a lawn mower to the monsters. Myself and the other players were discussing this odd behaviour of the dice and it got to the point where the archer in our party would shoot my character in the back just to knock his hit points down so he would "go berserk". I literally had no control over this, it was just how the dice worked for that character. He was truly a berserker barbarian would defeat death at the last moment.

As someone who routinely rolls a D6 on a D20, I feel this pain so bad. My biggest dice streak records is 4 1's in a row, and another where I had 5 2's in a row. My DM couldn't believe it, but she watched it happen all throughout the session. The worst part of the 2 streak, is that the 2-5 were 2 rolls at advantage.
Now unlike Wil, there is a saving grace. Every 6ish sessions, statistically the impossible happens on the other side, and my largest 20 streak is 6. I also roll divine interventions like a god. Have about a 50% success rate on divine intervention.
