- Kevin Hoagland uses a Minelab Xterra 705 Gold Pack Metal Detector to find a gold nugget at a GPAA claim near Boise Idaho. He also explains the process of ground balancing a detector to make the earth disappear.
love the video man, your one of the few people that shows the sound of a nugget on a xterra 705. keep the videos coming man. like and follow for sure
Hey,good luck to you my friend. This was a great video for me.I really, really learned a lot!Special thanks for the heads up about the GPAA.
I never knew that sensitivity would drift just thought ground balance did. Really learned something here. Thank you.
I am glad you shared how you pump the detector coil up and down like that...no one really shows that. They just show them finding the targets.
Thanks for the video. We are heading up that way soon and plan on going to this claim. Thanks for the info
Nicely made video. I'm just a newbie. I think I got as excited as you at finding the nugget. I will not initially be looking for gold but prospecting old home sites and parks. I like the idea of using my mind to imagine how people lived in a particular place and using that knowledge to find targets.
+Kirk Johnson Part of being a good prospector is just that. Being able to look back in time in your mind. The best place to find gold is where it has already found.
Great video Kevin. Some nice tips there regardless of what beeper someone might be swinging.
Great vid! you explained everything very understandably.
Great Video!! The X-Terra 70/705 is a underestimated machine by a lot of folks. With the settings right it will run with the best of them.
Easy voice to listen to, good video, lots of information.
Even after three years, it's nice to find a nice played out adventure in the Idaho wilderness, great job...
Ground balance is like shifting the noise floor, so to speak... and that noise floor can be closer or further away from the metal's discrimination that you seek (gold, silver, etc.).
you teached me some new tips thank you ;) very much I'm gonna start watching your videos to
I am so new to all of this that I just got my starter panning kit. I have wanted to do this for years now. I live in the area also. I learned a lot watching you and I will check out the GPA. Is there a way for a new person to get in touch with others to be able to learn and talk to. I have always learned by doing. I am getting my permit this next week for Idaho. Thank you.
You mention adjusting the sensitivity after hearing a little more ground noise when you had ground balanced. How do you know to turn it back up after you get out of that area that made you turn it down?
I just got Xterra 705 bargain in 2019. I know now in days this Metal Detector would be considered as Classic, it had the best days in the past but I will try it on Gold Prospecting. Lets see how it does on field.
Great Video Sir! Love it
Nice show Kevin!
Im joining gpaa youve convinced me .... Awesome!!!!
Kevin - I have the X-Terra 70 and the eTrac & I purchased them over the past couple of years mainly because I watched lots of your videos early on. You have as much (maybe more) detecting knowledge than anyone alive - especially when it comes to Minelab products. My point? Please consider filming more field detecting trips - share more of your knowledge with us. Make your films longer, maybe fill a 30 minute time slot like some of the old Garrett and Whites shows on TV. I know you love to specialize on gold nuggets but maybe branch out into some relic hunting near battlefields or hunting for gold / silver jewelry on the beaches using Minelab detectors. Pull in other locals who can add to the excitement - to go along with you. My friend, YOU are the pro with Minelab - help them become competitive with that other detector company (Garrett) who has no competition for their public TV shows. I know I'm rambling a bit but I'm hopeful that you understand my suggestion. More from you, more, more, more 😀.
Terry,
I will be working on creating a pretty detailed video series covering most of the manufactures, settings and so on plus getting back to relic hunting, yep I'm getting out of the gold fields and back into the battlefields, parks and beaches. I actually found my first three ringer before I found my first nugget.
Thank you for watching and your kind words. Hope to see you out there sometime.

I really like that pick! Well Kevin I have heard that in other places gpaa has good claims.the few left in the Prescott area seem to beat up and tired to waist time on..I did not renew with them
I noticed a good breeze in the trees around you. Did the wind have any affect on your headphones? Would you suggest a set of those style of headphones?
Awesome video Kevin.
I watch these videos and am amazed that no one uses classifiers to separate the dirt from the rocks...just saying
Awesome video!!!
I was just there and camped where your car is parked ,4th of July 2020. Did metal detect there on the same mounds. Lots of trash, shell casings, lead, cans, nails ect, ect but no gold. Lots of lead bullets in the creek bank on the otherside of creek. But, got gold in the stream sluice.
That's awesome me and my cousin are becoming Gpaa Members. That's a good day. I would love to find a nice flake/nug like that. And we are also from utah. Is there any good sites in utah you would recommend. Or a way to message you sir? Thanks
Thanks for the tips....
I just moved to nampa and if your still here in the area I would love to go out sometime with you
Since we all can't afford Minelab products I hope my Garrett AT Gold will suffice. As usual you give us great information and Thanks.
+Don McElyea
Don, The AT Gold is a great detector and one that I have added to my inventory. The first thing I noticed was it was a bit noisy in the factory presets on really hot ground. Learn to set the sensitivity to the ground and you will do great.
+Kevin Hoagland Great info. I plan to be going out with Calvin Bunker in Arizona for a day with the metal detector. Hopefully, he will be able to teach me how to use it. Thanks Kevin.
Thank you buddy
Hi; What. kind of metal detector you recommended for..?
Thanks
What an awesome find!
Thank's your a good teacher .
I wonder how many Sasquatch have watched you without you knowing. 🙂I hear stories from that area on Sasquatch Chronicles all the time.
what is yr id readings on the nugget hope u could share the readings .....
You should've hit me up while you were here! Me and the whole Dirt Fishin America crew are here in Boise. We'd love to meet up some day.
Brandon, You know that is going to happen.... Days in in the nugget patches.
Ese videio e de 2015.
Ese detector serve pra prospecção? .
Hi Kevin, just watched this again since I'm now living right near Boise. Is that the His and His 1 and 2 claim?
It is.
Kevin, you did a spot for minelab "Getting Started with the Minelab X-TERRA 705 Gold Pack Metal Detector ". I watched it last week, got my 705 yesterday, since then minelab killed their youtube account.. and now it's gone! :/ Was hop'n to watch that again before this weekend. I'm not sure if you still have that or not.. but.. weird that they would kill off their account!
+Jamie Burke
Jamie, I will look around and see if I can find the video somewhere and will send you a link.
Thank man, but they put their account back up. All good.
where can I get this Membership App ?? I enjoyed your Video.
+Roy Coll Hi Roy, Thanks for watching our videos! You can get more information on joining the Gold Prospectors Association of America by following this link: www.goldprospectors.org/join ... Membership gives you access to this claim and over 300 others starting at only $84.50 for the first year! - Happy Prospecting!
Ya know I forgot, I use to subscribe to the this Mining Mag. some years ago and it stipulated that ,' That was the case. but I'm up in the stiks of New York. and not around any gold fields. I'm just curious about what you do as all. I will subscribe to that after I finish this post. Most of the guys I knew at the time were just as curious as I was... that's why there isn't any of those Magazines left. I have been Metal Detecting for over 40 years and just now getting into the water aspects of it. Its a lot of fun. Thanks again.
Just got a 3 yr. Sub. Thank You
See your Goldprospectorsspace shirt on.Tim will love it..
UFODPI Heck yeah that is awesome
How does your kia do in the back roads and is it 4x4? By the way this is hot rock from alaska cripple river.
It's not 4x4 but it handled the terrain well. Then again it was a rental with insurance so no holding back ;) Haha. It was a very nice ride all kidding aside!
Yea dude. I use the gold bug 2 and have to ground balance often
@GoldTrails I was wondering the next time you go out. Can I tag along. I will help with gas and food? I have always wanted to do this.
great info...my question is,,is the dector in prospecting mode or AM...it sounds like its in prospecting mode,,i want to do more hunting in that setting,,,i live in the motherlode and there are LOTS of tailings and piles to work on,,just trying to figure out correct settings....thank you
+harold king
The 705 was in the prospecting mode. I seldom use the AM mode. If you have the current GPAA Mining Guide there is a section on setting up your detector that is universal to all machines.
thanks im gonna try this teqnuiqe
could someone explain to me what a claim is?
I have found lots of gold on gpaa claims. Well worth the $$
Someone plz help.. I won't some metal boxes insaid scanner. Android apps u now
Hi Kevin. Was this on the His and His claim?
Hello from western Montana.
Do you use a pin pointer?
even though I know you have fount a lot of gold, I love how excited you got. I'll be going bananas when I find my first picker/nugget. been prospecting for 3 years now and all I've found is flower 8/
Casey, stick with it no matter what. What you don't see are the piles and piles of non gold targets I dig for every gold nugget and I love digging trash!
One of my best nugget patches was in the middle of an old mine sites trash pile. Days of pulling junk out but the ounces of gold I found, worth every bad target.
Good luck on your hunts ,thanks for being a normal person about it not like some they are hard to watch
what is GPA?
Hello..sir
this is mesin how much
At 6.56, I swear i can see another bigger piece of gold just below your hand?!
Great video
What is a GPA gold mining guide and how can someone get one.
AND GOOD VIDEO
It's a benefit of membership in the Gold Prospectors Association of America. You can join by following this link: www.goldprospectors.org/join
great job
Nice gold Kevin
wow i like that
how to get detector like that
Which coil did you use on that 705?
+RoadTripVidz
The coil was the 10" 18.75 kHz DD coil. Great coil covers just enough ground for the way I hunt and is pretty sensitive. When I take that one off I go to the 6" DD round. It is great on small shallow nuggets.
Kevin Hoagland Thank you for the reply, enjoy the videos... post up more!
i have a 705 myself. Whats the smallest gold you detected with the 705??
Nathan, my smallest find with a 705 was just a bit over 2grains that's grains not grams.
The soil was heavy iron, and I was using the 18.75kHz 6 inch coil.
It was just a bump in the threshold that I had to go back over a couple of times and change coil direction before it popped in my phones.
Had I not set up the 705 before detecting and kept on ear on it, I think I would have passed it over.
Sweet thanks!!! I'm very green and am glad to know it's a very capable machine. I started to think I should have gotten like a gold bug 2 to have the best chances but super glad to know it's all operator and not the machines capabilities. Thanks....Big fan of yours!!
Nathan Nieto The GBII is one of my favorite detectors but i seldom recommend it for a new user. It is a fully manual detector and for many starting out they become frustrated with the machine. At 71kHz it is capable of tiny gold and a lot of noise. Get used to your 705 spend lots of time using it in the three different ground balance modes, learn to set everything to the ground you are working and you will succeed.
Wish I had this in INDIA. But I will one day. I would love to get some more info on the metal detector used.
You ever find meteorites?
I do, it is not something I peruse but if I'm in a known field, you bet I will spend time detecting them.
at 6:58 it looks like a nugget on the ground directly below your left index finger
Wow!!! So cool
loved the video except you DIDN'T show us what you found-----it would be nice to see the final product next time.....
Take a look at the 7:35 time marker on the video.
Did I notice a coil swap in the middle of the video ?
Gene,
Nope started and ended with the 18.75 kHz DD coil. I was thinking about swapping to the HiFerq 6" coil and hitting some of the bedrock cracks that were underwater but just couldn't leave the push pile alone.
Where do you get the pants you wear? They look indestructible...
Bill, they are Mascot. Made in Sweden and distributed by DOAK (Design Of All Kinds) in Vancouver WA. Best pant I have ever worn. Kevlar knees with slip I pants and tough as steel.
+Kevin Hoagland I'm gonna see about getting some for my granpa he'd love those!!!
I need same of the machine
my country rich in gold
I don't know
I've been prospecting this exact area for a few years now and I've only come up with flower gold. I think it might have been a stunt. Can't say for sure. But I've detected. Panned sluiced and know people who dredge on this claim and it's all fine flower gold. I don't believe this
What detector where you using?
+Gram Nylen
Minelab Xterra 705 Gold with the 10" 18.75kHz DD coil
+Kevin Hoagland No way I just bought won
Nice Mascots! :)
roughly how much is that nugget worth?
10-20 bucks lol. its small
Where is this im n boise?
He's on the GPAA claim 2 miles up Grimes creek from Hwy 21. It's on the left as your going up Grimes Creek Road; you'll crest a small hill then as soon as you start to drop down, you pull in on the left. I watched all that ground go through a trommel in 1982, after the creek had been diverted in the 30's, that had been diverted in the 1800's.
I want buy machine
merci du partages
DOUGLAS
wow, lucky guy

Bigfoot stories from Idaho below.
nice one good luck
Bom Muito bom aqui brasil país
Tell me try your putt this nugget in the ground??? Before you make this video
I live right next to boise😏
I thank it is a Texas nugget blown there by a hurricane.
Its "Boy C" not "Boy Z"!
It's MY gold !!!! Bordel de cheat !!!
I find it hard to believe you are only going to find one tiny nug and NOTHING else. I believe it was planted
did you not watch? he found plenty of trash
Rebel,
What you do not see is the hours spent digging a great deal of trash. You just see a glimpse of the hours spent on the site while I was detecting. Just like a fishing show not every cast lands a fish but that's all you see.
@@KevinHoaglandAZ that's very true but in this case I was there with my wife & 3 children and had the amazing pleasure of meeting you during the filming.of this video. Having the site next to yours was unbelievable to say the least. What you taught us with our metal detectors is still with us to this day and has also inspired me to build my collection to 11 metal detectors ranging from basic coin detectors to Minelab and one detector (Valcan) that's had 3 tours of Afghanistan. If was definitely an honor meeting you.
Mine.... It's my gold that I will find by myself..... Bordel de cheat !!!
