@@rebel4721 I am in Australia so I can't give you a specific answer for the US, because while I have a historical knowledge, the amazing growth of Online Shopping has radically changed the Retail Market Sector, which is probably why the three new sport jackets that I bought in the Salvation Army's Charity Shop were Macey's house brand and the casual shirts were Abercrombie and Fitch line for the youth market. But the classic way of conducting the current Market Research, required to correctly answer your questions, is by A. Walking around the largest Department Stores and seperating the clothes by A, B & C grade of quality by price. B. You will soon realise, that independent of both Brand and Quality of manufacture, that there are three distinct Price Points, with the best selling brands, not the same as the best quality brands, will have been allocated the most amount of both display and shelf space. Because that's how retailing operates in a large Department Stores. Now having learnt what quality of clothing is available at each Price Point, with the difference being not only obvious, but often pointed our by store staff, you can then apply that knowledge by conducting the same evaluation exercise to the two other prime source of menswear, namely Shopping Mall specialist shops and the often more interesting source, which is the Menswear Shops that have been established in Main Street Shopping Strips for many decades. Once you have that basic experience under your belt ---- at no cost other than the worn shoe leather ----, then watch the buying advice guidance on this channel, before you open your wallet to spend real money. And that knowledge will enable you to buy more clothes for the original budget. Phil.
@@rebel4721 There are lots of videos about that on this channel so check them out. The short answer is to shop by quality and not for brands, e.g. Gucci is usually overpriced. There are some brands that represent good value but usually in one category and not another. Or some that are better vintage because their newer clothes aren't as good. Look around this channel and watch the videos that interest you.
I remember when we asked for a video on online shopping. I don’t think anyone expected two videos of 20+ minutes within rapid succession of each other. You are so awesome, Raphael!
Not only a masterclass on second-hand shopping but pulling it all together as well. The Isaia jacket is stunning! This would make a great series- Showing us real-world second-hand finds and how to mix and match them!
I was always one of those people that would look at well dressed people and just think “One day that’ll be me.” This video has really changed my life. Thank you so much.
Used shopping can be time consuming, but there is also a certain sense of adventure and excitement that comes with finding something you weren't looking for and falling in love with it.
While the very detailed presentation took a long time, it was full of the details that I really wanted to know about, because I have never bought any second hand clothes online. As a very old Salesman, who was trained to make product presentations, in the classic 1960-80 IBM style, you "Topped the Class", which is something that is not well done by any of the YT "Lifestyle" channels. I think that this is the most interesting, and most practical, presentation that I have seen you make. Phil.
Always love the content, and I especially appreciate you sharing your EBay/second-hand tips. Thank you for helping me achieve my men’s style goals, and helping me stay dressed so well through the years.
This is one of my favorite videos from your channel. It is highly relatable, and instantly useful. I enjoy the price comparisons and including multiple styles with a single jacket. It's strange that this was not followed up with a winter version. I've noticed much more menswear in thrift shops as the pandemic and resignations have continued. It might be a perfect time to roll out a sequel. Thanks for the excellent content!
I always enjoy your advice on sartorial and on how to create a good wardrobe that does not go out of style or leave us bankrupt. So I would love to see more in this format PS - The video of the visit to the second-hand stores enchanted me and was very useful.
Thank you. We want to be a place for people interested in menswear no matter where they are in their journey and what budget they have. Of course, this video is not going to drive sales, and people who have little means will likely not be able to support us on Patreon. So from a pure business perspective, it sucks for us, but we just want to show a little love for every segment of our following. At the end of the day, we care about our audience, and we felt that it might be helpful to some people.
@@gentlemansgazette It's going to be useful for a lot of people. 😊 Unfortunately we don't have a good used/ vintage market here in India. Could you guys please make a video about what a gentleman should wear at home particularly during the summer months or what to wear at home in quarantine?
A video about Gianni Agnellis style would be great, you mention him often but an in depth video about the king of sprezzatura would be wonderful, keep up the great work!
For the people who can’t quite invest the time, the next step up from ebay I think are online stores which specialize in lightly used clothing/shoes. The prices will be higher, but they do the legwork for you, and will put their reputation behind the condition of the items. Some great deals to be had these as well!
Raphael, challenge accepted 😉. My ebay outfit consists of a Double breasted navy blazer from Tagliatore, for which I paid 50 bucks (retail: around 400 dollars), a light blue shirt from Turnbull and Asser for which I paid 10 bucks ( retail: 300 dollars), a pair of stone chinos from Incotex for which I payed 15 (retail: 150 dollars), a pocket square from Marinella, which cost me 5 bucks (retail: $75), dark brown longwings from grenson, which cost me 65 bucks (retail: $250), a Charvet tie for which I paid 15 bucks (retail: $200) and a pair of Persol 9649 sunglasses, for which I paid 70 bucks (retail: $113). Btw love your outfit especially the jacket.
I bought a summer outfit (over a few months) on Ebay: Haspel Madras jacket = $25 / $400 new, lot of three Ralph Lauren Polo chinos = $20 / $240 new, Ledbury dress shirt = $25 / $175 new, Vintage Vines bow tie = $10 / $50 new, Seaward and Stearns pocket square = $30 / $80 new, and Allen Edmonds 'New Orleans' walnut oxfords = $60 / $400 new. I bought a Trafalgar walnut belt and Pantharella socks from my local men's shop. The outfit looks great, is very comfortable, and I'm pleased to look so good for such a reasonable price (I'm frugal).
Almost all of my nicer clothes come from ebay or a local thrift store. Great clothes that would have cost a fortune otherwise. I avoid dress shirts, but mainly because they wear out so fast. The transformation of those shoes is AMAZING!!
That ending point of Monetary savings verse time spent is a very big thing I have to keep in mind. It's so easy to get lost looking! I wonder if there's a list of brands you should trust for specific items outright to make it easier
I am a 68 yr old retiree. I like clothes but do not have the budget for too much. This gives me a lot of things to consider when I buy more clothes. The time investment means nothing to me. I have been watching The Elegant Oxford as well and have started looking for some nice shoes on Ebay. Wish me well, I need it.
I recently picked up a similar pair of brown Polo glen check trousers off of eBay. After seeing how you combined them, I’m even happier with my purchase.
Im not a woman but I have never managed to find a similar site or channel for ladies... The closest I have seen are people like Bernadette Banner, but they're closer to historical costuming and sewing than practical classic wear
Good job. I would say that there are some issue I am having, specifically with the fact that for the fort belvedere items you need to include shipping which increases the price. As for the different combinations of clothes, your jacket is the thing that you kept in all outfits for a reason. It by itself starts you off at 98% discount from the retail price. All the other items are negligible compared to the savings from it.
eBay has been helpful to get a better understanding of a quality garments and material and most of my office wardrobe were eBay finds. Some particularly treasures that fit me perfectly and are a heavyweight wool/cashmere Ralph Lauren Purple Lapel flannel pants (about $40), a Huntsman RTW blue tweed sportcoat ($250). I've also had some duds that I didn't return and went to the donation box but considering that I never paid retail prices, I've never felt too stung by it.
I like this video a lot, it’d be fun to combine this concept with second hand and vintage shopping. More people need to learn about second hand :) if you go to Finland after winter there’s some sales on fur ;) I got a mink coat for 10€
Once you go down the Ebay rabbit hole there's no coming back. Have been doing this since the lockdown and I picked some very nice item through similar techniques. Thanks for the tips great video series!
