@@rebel4721 I am in Australia so I can't give you a specific answer for the US, because while I have a historical knowledge, the amazing growth of Online Shopping has radically changed the Retail Market Sector, which is probably why the three new sport jackets that I bought in the Salvation Army's Charity Shop were Macey's house brand and the casual shirts were Abercrombie and Fitch line for the youth market.
But the classic way of conducting the current Market Research, required to correctly answer your questions, is by A. Walking around the largest Department Stores and seperating the clothes by A, B & C grade of quality by price.
      B. You will soon realise, that independent of both Brand and Quality of manufacture, that there are three distinct Price Points, with the best selling brands, not the same as the best quality brands, will have been allocated the most amount of both display and shelf space. Because that's how retailing operates in a large Department Stores.
Now having learnt what quality of clothing is available at each Price Point, with the difference being not only obvious, but often pointed our by store staff, you can then apply that knowledge by conducting the same evaluation exercise to the two other prime source of menswear, namely Shopping Mall specialist shops and the often more interesting source, which is the Menswear Shops that have been established in Main Street Shopping Strips for many decades.
Once you have that basic experience under your belt ---- at no cost other than the worn shoe leather ----, then watch the buying advice guidance on this channel, before you open your wallet to spend real money. And that knowledge will enable you to buy more clothes for the original budget. Phil.

@@rebel4721 There are lots of videos about that on this channel so check them out. The short answer is to shop by quality and not for brands, e.g. Gucci is usually overpriced. There are some brands that represent good value but usually in one category and not another. Or some that are better vintage because their newer clothes aren't as good. Look around this channel and watch the videos that interest you.

While the very detailed presentation took a long time, it was full of the details that I really wanted to know about, because I have never bought any second hand clothes online. As a very old Salesman, who was trained to make product presentations, in the classic 1960-80 IBM style, you "Topped the Class", which is something that is not well done by any of the YT "Lifestyle" channels. I think that this is the most interesting, and most practical, presentation that I have seen you make. Phil.

My ebay outfit consists of a Double breasted navy blazer from Tagliatore, for which I paid 50 bucks (retail: around 400 dollars), a light blue shirt from Turnbull and Asser for which I paid 10 bucks ( retail: 300 dollars), a pair of stone chinos from Incotex for which I payed 15 (retail: 150 dollars), a pocket square from Marinella, which cost me 5 bucks (retail: $75), dark brown longwings from grenson, which cost me 65 bucks (retail: $250), a Charvet tie for which I paid 15 bucks (retail: $200) and a pair of Persol 9649 sunglasses, for which I paid 70 bucks (retail: $113).
Btw love your outfit especially the jacket.

I bought a summer outfit (over a few months) on Ebay: Haspel Madras jacket = $25 / $400 new, lot of three Ralph Lauren Polo chinos = $20 / $240 new, Ledbury dress shirt = $25 / $175 new, Vintage Vines bow tie = $10 / $50 new, Seaward and Stearns pocket square = $30 / $80 new, and Allen Edmonds 'New Orleans' walnut oxfords = $60 / $400 new. I bought a Trafalgar walnut belt and Pantharella socks from my local men's shop. The outfit looks great, is very comfortable, and I'm pleased to look so good for such a reasonable price (I'm frugal).

For the people who can’t quite invest the time, the next step up from ebay I think are online stores which specialize in lightly used clothing/shoes. The prices will be higher, but they do the legwork for you, and will put their reputation behind the condition of the items. Some great deals to be had these as well!

eBay has been helpful to get a better understanding of a quality garments and material and most of my office wardrobe were eBay finds. Some particularly treasures that fit me perfectly and are a heavyweight wool/cashmere Ralph Lauren Purple Lapel flannel pants (about $40), a Huntsman RTW blue tweed sportcoat ($250). I've also had some duds that I didn't return and went to the donation box but considering that I never paid retail prices, I've never felt too stung by it.

As for the different combinations of clothes, your jacket is the thing that you kept in all outfits for a reason. It by itself starts you off at 98% discount from the retail price. All the other items are negligible compared to the savings from it.

Somethings I learned being poor and wanting to look your best:
Price is not equal to beauty
A nice fitting suit is great, buy a cheap one, get it tailored (do this with your shirts, pants, jackets) and it will always look great.
Just because is cheap, doesn't mean it should be treated as cheap, get it ironed, keep it clean and look for quality.
Style is not for sale, don't be affraid of experimenting and trying, everyone has a unique style, find yours and evolve it to your routine and needs (Energetic? Comfort and mobility are your go to; Doesn't spend much time at home? Comfort and utility is your need, boots and polos are something that keeps you in everyday casual style; )
Is not how many clothes you have that matters, is how much combinations can you make, a good jacket changes your style with a right shirt to a total new thing with a different shirt that still makes sense to your general style.
Brands are not a certificate to style, and neither should you use it to promote you, your style should compliment your body, your hair, beard, face and personality, so be honest with you.
Shoes are something that it is worth while to spend a little bit much, as long as you use it to what was made for; Boots for running, social shoes to spend the day walking, sport shoes to stand up all day, and not only will the shoe be worn out ten times quicker, it screws up your whole outfit, so keep this in mind.
Leather is beautiful, but besides being expensive, you have to take care of it, so remember, the higher the price, the higher the maintenance, so be carefull.
It's no shame being poor, the shame only starts when you allow it to define you and when you try to live a live that you can not afford.
Work hard and you'll be able to, sell yourself by the price of your clothes and you'll find that you have no value behind it, like a golden garbage bag in a diamond box.

hidden truth here: all of this is much easier if you're a common size. depending upon what you're shopping for, what's most common can vary (e.g. the secondhand market for designer garments tends to run smaller than that for classic menswear garments), but for instance, it's a *huge* plus wearing a regular (vs. short or long) when shopping for a jacket. be prepared to be more patient if you wear an uncommon size. great tips throughout though!

I disagree short and let me jackets are plentiful and sell for less on eBay in my experience

Very nice video as always. I used to enjoy searching for used clothing a lot in the past, but now I've found the market has been flooded with a lot of low quality items that bury really valuable stuff. Maybe it's just that good items from the 90s and early 2000s is gone now and stuff produced in the last 10-12 years is plain rubbish either in terms of quality or style. I'm also finding increasingly more difficult to find my size either because smaller sizes are slowly disappearing and because my square and skeleton-like shoulders do not pair well with the modern cuts, made to accommodate the large trapezia of many gym-lovers.

Hey Raphael and everyone at the Gentleman's Gazette, I have an urging question. Much like you I have bought from eBay new or slightly used clothes and shoes, but something came about that I don't understand, or know how actually to take measurements. When on an pair of pants it says, for example "Waist 32", Is this the circumference of your waist ? Converted to inches, mine is 42.51" or 108cm, I have all my other measurements fir the garment that I am watching, but I can't comprehend on this different method of taking a measurement. Thank you.

I have to do that all the time cause though i have an excessively limited amount of clothes; i try to wear solely genuine 1880s 1890s clothes; So ebay and etsy the way to go. Having said that I cannot do so for things like socks, boots, slippers and gloves cause none have survived (at least none in my size for boots)

i suppose all the Ebay items, you got from the US. Right? Being I D live in Spain I look at listings in Europe as US postage apart from IMPORT/EXPORT TAX ON TOP OF DOESN'T MAKE IT VIABLE. However, buying from eastern european countries, such as POLAND, LUTHUANIA, HUNGARY ETC IS MOST BENEFICIAL FOR ME. e.g. Paid 8 euros for a striped Eton Winchester shirt, which I received this week in immaculate condition, practically wrinkle free. Postage WAS JUST 7 EUROS.

I have literally dozens of Ralph Lauren ties, both Polo and Purple Label, but I have never seen one before that was made outside of Italy.... so it must be an old one.

What a wonderful series this is turning out to be, well done Rafael and team!
I have had good success with laundry bar wetted with hydrogen peroxide, however, as with any cleaner, test in an inconspicuous place first. I use a hog hair brush or old toothbrush first, as a laundry brush can cause nap.
Is there any truth to not buying used shoes because have formed to the first wearer?
