    Question: for the first table you talk about (S3), how useful are some of the metrics like age and BMI, if there is not a linear relationship. Especially in the case of age, the risk goes up substantially past 65, then dramatically past 75. Similarly for obesity, aren't those "per 1 bmi increase" numbers obfuscating the fact that an increase from 18 to 25 bmi probably has little to no effect compared to the increase from 25 to 30 or higher?

      A very interesting observation is that Japan has extremely good covid outcome (among lowest mortality in the world). Yet, they have the oldest population - I think of all countries. A country like Brazil has a younger and quiet obese population - and their covid death rate is a factor 18 of Japans.
      So I - surprisingly - obesity appears to be a much stronger risk factor than age.
      For age, I think the variable most are missing that age must be multiplied by how badly we eat and live - for each we age.
      If we live well, avoid severe stress and have a nutritious diet - then the years don't add much risk I think (as seen in he Japan case).
      Japan explainer: Obesity rate is under 5% while in US and UK it is in the range of 35-40%. Japan has to a bigger degree stuck to a traditional diet, rich in fresh produce, specially vegetables and fish (and lower in meat).

    One potential confounding variable that could be responsible for "omicron" being more mild than delta. Isn't omicron more similar to the common cold as compared to delta? Don't we know that coronaviruses offer at least some cross reactive T cell immunity for different coronaviruses (even the common cold protects at least a bit against severe illness from covid)? So putting these 2 pieces together, couldn't this be the reason for why omicron is more mild than delta? This is important, because it would only be more mild for people who had a cold more recently, but it would not be more mild than delta in those who have not gotten a common cold recently. If you look at the timing of omicron and delta, you will realize that much more people likely had a common cold before the omicron wave as opposed to the delta wave. I am baffled that no experts have thought of this and have made no attempt to control for this confounding variable, and instead are making blanket statements like "omicron" is more mild than delta.

    • @CaswellMazzei
      @CaswellMazzei 2 роки тому +5

      Even if pror immunity due to cold infection is a factor wouldn't it stand to reason that omicron is just inherently less severe due to how similar it is to the common cold?

    • @jonjones1336
      @jonjones1336 2 роки тому +6

      @@CaswellMazzei Only if we assume that the entire population has had a cold at roughly the same time, which is simply not the case. There are people who have went years without a cold, and not all colds are due to coronaviruses. So we might have people who have gone 15 years without a coronavirus-based common cold. It would simply be dangerous and erroneous to make the blanket claim that "omicron is more mild than delta" based on population based trends (that don't correct for confounding factors that have implications for individuals) and then have those people have a false sense of security, and potentially get severely ill if they catch omicron.

    • @CanUNotToday

      Common colds are caused by rhinoviruses.

    • @CaswellMazzei
      @CaswellMazzei 2 роки тому +5

      @@jonjones1336 common colds don't usually cause severe illness though. Most humans come into contact with multiple cold viruses every year since the time they were children so their immune memory is there ready to handle it by the time they're adults. This is why it's important for children to come into contact with these things to train their immune systems. Sure there are the rare cases of people with weaker immune systems that have more severe reactions to colds but that's generally not the case. Also we've gathered data from multiple countries around the world by this point and pretty much every country has reported milder illness in patients when compared to delta. So either omicron is inherently less pathogenic or if your theory is correct the vast majority of people have been exposed to the common cold because omicron is by most accounts less severe.

      Every nation is experiencing hospitalizations with Omicron. Canada here, we still have Delta patients in hospital, takes about 2 weeks from infection to end up in hospital from Delta. Omicron is now dominate but only this past week or so. It is expected to peak next week and start dropping the following week. Our health authorities are reporting similar to this study, it's milder but hospitalizations increase because of the huge amount of spread. Just as the US and Britain we are reporting large amounts of healthcare workers, first responders and transit drivers are off sick with Omicron. We have a high rate of vaccination in 12 to adult over 90% fully vaccinated and 30% boosted (not everyone can get boosters) and only 30% kids 5-11 are vaccinated. Our medical is non profit, everyone gets equal access, no or very low monthly premiums and no co-pay with unlimited access, so being busy is not what the government or taxpayer wants...goes over budget and increases our taxes.

    People didn't talk about the "llness" later because it was, for most, very ghoulish.
    Imagine not being able to go out, down in bed for days, and unable to feed yourself much less travel to get essentials.
    No one cared for your bodily needs as they do so well in hospitals nowadays.
    It was horrific but contained as best as could be she said.
    Later, my grandparents always had easy to prepare meals on hand ( canned or bottled. ) And helped others in need.
    I still don't understand why we ( today) took this long to get N95 masks and testing kits. They help in the long run along with volunteer social distancing.
    What did we learn?
    What we do today will also affect our tomorrows if we pay attention to what our elders said and did?
    Or quibble about who is right and who is wrong?
    Be well everyone.

    I was diagnosed with Kikuchi Fujimoto Disease (KFD) in 2017. I want to know if you have any information or data about person with KFD can take Covid vaccine or not. My two lymph nodes behind ear have not shrunk. Any side effects likely? What can be done in such case? Covaxine is available to me. Anyone having substantial info please reply here.

    So, to sum it up, every demographic and comorbidity group is many times less at risk with Omicron. Except....
    The primary difference is that tmprss2 is no longer used by Omicron, which flips the Hazzard ratio between smokers and non smokers, as well as males v. Females, as we would expect based on the excellently explained mechanisms in the 2020 Drbeen series of heavily censored suppressed videos on this platform.

      And it's still better to be young, vaccinated, low bmi, high Vitamin D, and do all the right things, because at the end of the day, it is still the immune system that clears the virus.

    Sorry, realize you were outlining free tests! Apologies! Still, main concern in attempting to make conclusions, how are the variants confirmed? What confidence level is there in specific accurate identification? Is there one test which determines which variant? Or, is there a separate test for each of the three? Alpha, delta & Omicron? If this has been previously explained, I apologize? ER here in chicago didn’t confirm to my son-in-law what variant he had infection with, just confirmed had Covid?

    • @whatevergoesforme5129
      @whatevergoesforme5129 2 роки тому

      Yes, that is my question as well. How do they know if it is alpha, delta, omicron, whatever when they said gene sequencing is needed for that? Do they do gene sequencing after each PCR test? isn't that every tedious? Or are they lying when they say it is delta or omicron or covid? Can distinguish between the flu and Covid? Common cold and covid/omicron? I predict another strain on the horizon to push more of the leaky liquid.

      Please don’t refer to the shot therapy as a vaccine, for any one over the age of 2 should know that vaccines stomp out and eventually eradicate disease. We should all be able to see by now that the shots are one means to protect one’s self from this virus and it’s mutations. What the shot doesn’t do is stop those who take it from infecting and being infected by which ever variant is the flavor of the day. Please please please understand what is being given is a form of a therapeutic and is why many shots have been given within a years time.

    I don’t believe that it is irrational to equate poor health practices that result in inflammatory and metabolic disease with poor outcomes when it comes not only to Covid but other diseases as well. Having a SAD diet can only exacerbate the conditions.

    • @kimfleury
      @kimfleury 2 роки тому

      However, it _is_ irrational to blame all case number increases on it, as that particular PhD nurse does in his videos, and it's even more irrational that he declares that everyone in the US is on a SAD diet because he was in the US once and went to the grocery store for bread, and out of all the massive selection he couldn't find a single loaf that didn't have sugar. That was his only bit of evidence. That's irrational. It's also irrational to fear monger over it. Nobody is superior based on diet. You have no idea what influences people's dietary intake, or how much is choice vs necessity. As Elton John sang in the song written by Bernie Taupin, "Times are changing, now the poor get fat, and the fever's gonna catch you when the bitch gets back." For crying out loud, I was caring for an elderly couple who received Meals on Wheels meals for seniors, which are very healthy, but mostly designed for the more well-to-do elderly who volunteer for the program, who have all their own teeth and good dental health. The elderly couple I cared for wore upper dentures, but the lower jaw had shrunken too much to fit lowers, and Meals on Wheels brought them raw broccoli and carrots. It was impossible for them to chew those vegetables, and they couldn't use their stove to cook them, which was the reason they qualified for Meals on Wheels. That's just one example. I'm personally on a Mediterranean diet, and have been for about 20 years at least. I've always watched what I eat. But I've been in the position where I left home at 5AM and didn't return until 10PM, and in between, the only food available was fast food, with no healthy restaurants in the vicinity. Thankfully it only lasted a couple years, but some people actually work that much for much of their lives. It doesn't help to shame those people with irrational fears, especially when the data Dr. Been showed doesn't support the fear.
