Great video! Will this direction of slipping work for a South Paw fighter as well? e.g. if it's south paw vs orthadox, would you still slip to the same side as the punch you last threw?
Man I L-O-V-E to watch all of your head movement training videos. I want to get My head moving like Lerdsila, Travis Roesler and Canelo Alvarez and you. 🙃
Foam strikers will add ALOT to your dodges. Foam strikers don't hurt and move FASTER than fist. So after all that comfy training your head will be faster than fists. Another good one is put a string or elastic band on the wall and string it horizontally at head level near your bag. Then practice ducking under this string as you practice striking on the bag. You can lower this line more and more over time for deeper rolls.
just gotta let you know, gabriel from the bottom of my heart, thank you. i absolutely love your videos, your energy, your fighting style, and the way you carry yourself are/is honestly (i’m only 18 but) what i hope myself and children embody characteristically. Never changing who you are for someone else but always evolving. Much love from Maryland!!-raider x
Damn, man. You just dispelled the MYSTERY of good head action. My coach talks about slipping all the time but never really the mechanics of it and WHY for each movement. Took you 6 minutes. Thank you! If you are reading this and you are my coach...somebody hacked my account and it isn't me shit talking you!
I did this drill a lot to get my head movement on point. A mirror really helps. If you're too reliant on this you'd seriously have a rhythm, and I feel that beginners may not be aware of that cause simply moving your head can create a false sense of security. Say you slip after a certain punch, the other guy would be waiting for you to slip, time your head movement and be ready to throw when your head is at a certain position. It's good to develop your high guard in tandem with moving your head to make your counters more unpredictable. You can also combine slipping and weaving to vary your rhythm. Or move your head when out of range sometimes to get a sense of your own timing and the other guy's rhythm. If the other guy can't time you then it doesn't matter if he knows what you're going to do.
@@Semitruck1 preferably have your hands up when you're in your opponent's range and know where your hands are at all times so that you're always ready to defend. And if you move your head all the time to defend, especially if it's always either slipping or weaving, then you're definitely going to have a rhythm. If your opponent is experienced enough and has good timing, then he'll eventually get a feel for your rhythm and catch you as you're moving your head. So it's good to vary your defense with parries or just the conventional guard and countering after that together with head movement to vary your timing.
Started spending a lot more time on this channel when I began applying gabes tips… his focus on fluidity in regards to your technique really elevates your game; truly grateful and humbled by this mans expertise! Best part is he makes it so easy to understand.
Gabriel these are great videos which really and practically explain the benefits and pitfalls of different moves. I must admit I make a lot of these mistakes and I can now see why. So many boxing moves are taught as isolated moves but they are all linked and if one move is weak then the chain is weak. I learn something every time I watch. Thank you and I wish you well.
Thanks gabriel love these videos on head movement after taking a very hard punch to my head in the second fight it made me realize how badly i need to work on this
Thank you so much for this Video from Germany. I train Shootboxing for almost 2 years and my skill improofed in the last couple month so much since i have been watching your amazing videos. I am realy greatful for your knowledge and haveing the chance learning from a goat :). Special thanks for shareing you mindset and your opinion on how to be a respectful and humble fighter. A learned that when you're doing head movement to the left after jab for example, it is important to raise right hand up to prevent left hook etc. Peace!
If done correctly then I would say no. A Slip is only a small movement and I train my pupils so that they throw a jap without throwing a jap. SO you rotate your hips and shoulders like a jap/punch but the hand stays locked to your head. That way its only a small movement which often times is enough evasion for most straight counters and if not you still have your shoulder as a guard.
Some fighters do pendulum like movements including arms and shoulders and panches coming without telegraphing saw one in Karate Combat he had American Karate background
I have a question for you, what should be my focus when sparring? Should I focus on head movement for slipping and countering or should my movements be fainting to set up shots? It seems if you were slipping you would give him the mindset that you don’t want to be aggressive, but if you were fainting, you could set him up and play that chess match with hands to get a reaction , overload his nervous system and start catching him. I have considered why not do both, but it seems like there should be an emphasis on one or the other . Would I only perform random head slipping when I see him closing distance and the rest of the time I should be fainting?
I asked my coach this question exactly. I said do I need to slip and move my head even when I'm out of punching range? he said yes. do it all the time whether you're in range or not. It makes sense because if you face a good opponent he can close the distance with his footwork very quickly
@@Tamim1994 so do you focus more on feinting when standing in front of an opponent or head slips or a mix of both ? I guess it depends if you have an opponent walking forward and pressuring you focus on head slips and if he’s standing still waiting to counter you focus on feints ?
@@Rombodamus do both. You can feint different ways, it doesn’t always have to be physically demanding. You can feint with your eyes or just your feet too.
The weird thing is that my head movement is pretty on point in sparring and I don’t practice it much, or make it an area of focus. It just kinda happens. BUT pairing the strikes to the head movement is something I need work on. I just get into this mindset of making them miss and feeling untouchable, just super defensive and forget I need to capitalize on it.
What if you slip your head to the side where he is throwing his counter and walk into it? Also rolling when you are close and throwing the hook to the body changing levels I'm worried about the knee, if everytime you do that he may read you and knee you. Also worried about high kicks
There is a trick you can do to DEEP roll where you learn to let your legs go out from under you and catch them again almost like russian dance squat and you can shrug your shoulder or use your forearm in wing guard so it glances or so their strike mostly goes over your head hopefully.
I ended up improving my head movement practicing peekaboo style boxing after I ended up using it on a whim during some boxing only sparring against guys who were way bigger than me
What if to counter the straight punches and slipping, your opponent tries to time those slips to the side with kicks? What's the safest way to do head movement if kicks and knees are involved with punching so as to avoid being timed by a kick as soon as you slip to the side after those straight punches?
You have to minimize the motions by not dropping as much and just barely getting your head off of the center. Dropping low like in boxing would almost always guarantee a knee/kick so you have to keep it high and minimal.
Hi from Colombia Gabriel! Thanks for the content. One question.. after throwing the 1,2 I'll need to do advance one step to be in short distance right? And, would be good to practice without advancing just for the case when your oponent would be the person that takes that step? Thanks 👊💥
In MHO, this is one of your top clips. I wish top muaythai fighters who go international would invest money to hire expert mentor in preparing for fight with punching opponent. Too many times they just rely on normal prefight routine, and fall flat on the canvas.
What if I'm fighting someone taller and longer? If I throw a straight punch and slip to the outside, what if the longer guy catches me with a hook? Can it happen?
When a world champion teaches you, it just hits you into whole another level! Thank you, Gabriel! BTW, have you thought about creating a monthly subscription videos for workouts and different types of training? Love you, bro!
Gabriel, I have a question about your first video on neck training. is it necessary to hold your upper torso and hands up in the air when training the back of the neck? I just started working out again last week and can't hold the position even for 10 seconds without shaking, and I don't want my neck to be trained unevenly. Thank you.
If you're having trouble with the neck bridge (or if you're concerned about being able to do it safely), I'd suggest following Gabriel's other neck workout video "The Only Neck Workout You Need". It basically just uses the weight of your head as resistance, so very well-suited for people who aren't used to neck exercise.
@@versa5864 Ah, sorry, I'd thought it was about the neck training video from earlier this week 😅 If you want an easier place to start, maybe Joe Valtellini's video "Add These 3 Marital Arts Conditioning Exercises To Your Training" would be useful (neck stuff starts at the 6-minute mark)? They're done with your shoulders supported on a bench/chair/bed/whatever with your neck sticking out.
I notice your left hand drops down to shoulder level when slipping right and same for other side Whats the disadvantage of having both your hands high and close temples while slipping, is it just too slow to execute combos when fighting at high level like you are? Or does dropping the slipping side hand just give more room for their punch to go past?
Work today's combo into your training routine. It will definitely help you start moving your head more.
