They gave her a high bill, hoping she wouldn't fight so they could seize the property. They need to see how many times this has happened to other properties.
The problem is, the bill was so high, no one would just accept it. What was her normal bill? $13 and change? That’s over 500 years worth of water usage. The entire city would have had to have been stealing her water!
You are right they even charge for solid waste on empty lots if they can’t pull money in that way. Crooks straight up. Ask about how high the water bills were when they built the Aquarium
Any fool would know that woman didn't use that much water!!! The system should shut itself down.....when they notice anything like this...... it's all about taking advantage of people.....and this needs to stop immediately!
Zero water usage for 10 years. Replace the meter and $81k of water gets used. Replace the meter again and back to zero water usage. But they had to go to court and a judge has to rule that it was clearly a bad meter.
Blatant attempted robbery by The watershed company is crazy. And to even go to court for it is just shameless. Get these people off the board ridiculous.
You could turn every faucet, garden hose, showers etc on in a house and you would NEVER hit 81,000 dollars in water useage fees in a month. Its not physically possible. They were going to put that 81,000 directly in their pockets
The city or someone working for the city out themselves. It looks like this is a tactic used to either steal someone's property or steal money. They should do an investigation to see if there are other cases like this.
Many years ago we got a $22,500 hydro bill when it was usually about $99. We called Toronto Hydro and she asked us how many kilowatt hours the bill said. When we read it to her she roared with laughter because it was so impossibly high. Turns out it was an incorrect meter read and was immediately reversed. Why are Atlanta water employees and appeals members so incompetent in this case?
City of Atlanta water shed is trying to do this to me. For the first two years of living in a newly built home my bill was $11.25. The first two months I thought that was strange since I used water for watering the yard, clothes, dishes, bathes, etc. I contacted them and they said everything was working properly and what is read on the meter is accurate. Almost 2 years to the day I received a bill for $2500. I immediately called and they said “Your meter wasn’t reading correctly and when that happens we can only bill you a flat fee of $11” I told them for two years you all should’ve known that, I even called to inform them something’s not right with the bill. They didn’t have any answers other than filling an adjustment. Now I’m waiting to see what they say but if it’s denied I’m for sure taking legal action.
I don't get it. If the meter was not working correctly two years later it works? And the amount they are charging pro rated over the period means they been under billing by $100 a month which is worst.
That's bs unless it's in the contract that they can hit you with a prorated bill. ATL and Decatur watershed have been doing this for years now and it's gotten worse. Having the new stores were great but didn't help- this winning case is great and still hopefully move towards ending this crap
@@isaacclark9825 reading is fundamental. Maybe you missed the part where I said “I reached out to the water company after realizing my bill was the same month after month even though I was using water” AND you must’ve missed where they said “Nothings wrong with your meter, what’s being read is accurate”. Also, I’m not using hundreds of dollars of water each month so that STILL wouldn’t add up to $2500 of prorated fees after two years. Do the math, you’re smart enough, I know you can do it.
She should never have to go through this circus. Sue the CITY and WATER DEPT. for NEGLIGENCE and IGNORANCE. Stress compensation for her and all of the customers.
Did you notice the clowns from the city (paid for by taxpayers) sitting at the table typing, what a disgusting shame that property taxes are paying for totally unprofessional clowns costing more money in court - City has to pay legal and court costs!
the fact that this HAD TO GO TO COURT tells me that every member of that water board who felt that this course of action was justified - every one of them needs to be recalled & removed from their position.
I think this should be a class action lawsuit against the water shed. The Dept of Justice should intervene and put this Kangaroo court back in its place. To many of these stories and no accountability for they decisions.

Our little po dunk town tried that after replacing the meters with the so called smart water meters. Our bill went from 60.00 to nearly 500.00 two months later. Thank God I keep all my receipts from our bill. I went down and told them I'm not paying it and that I had had a plumber come out anticipating them saying it was probably a leak. He checked everything and said everything was good no leaks and if there had been one it would be in their pipes outside our home and thats their problem. But he said if there was 20 thousand gallons of water leaking it would definitely be running down the street. He also said the smart meters are a joke. And screw up all the time. Well they went back into their records and found the errors in the meters records. I still only owed them 60 dollars. The accounting was a tee total mess. People started coming in with outrageous bills higher then ours. But what set it all off is when our neighbor who happens to be the mayor got a bill for 800.00 😂😂😂. This government entities think they can push us around. But things are changing.
i see the water meter that was replaced had to have a previous read on it and the customer was billed due to that reading, every water meter installed has to be at zero, if not the custome will be billed accordingly. the city screwed up on this one.
I remember this when it was originally reported. She needs to get that property cleaned up and roof fixed before they start fining her for that in order to “steal” the property.
This is crazy that it even had to go to court. Technology is a gift/a curse. People rely on technology so much that it cost many people their lives/livelihood because they don't want to believe it could ever be wrong.
Are we paying these board members to rubber stamp denials? If so, let's save ourselves money. Hire one da and send it all to court. Save the people and the city a ton of money
Even if there was a leak, outside the house/structure, it should be the government’s issue. The say they own that land, which is why you pay property taxes forever. So let them fix it/pay it.
I would request that the water district PROVIDE PROOF THAT THE MILLIONS OF GALLIONS OF WATER WERE SENT THRU A PUMPING STATION INTO THE CONNECTING WATER MAINS AND TO THE BUILDINGS SUPPLY LINE, ON THE DATES IN QUESTION!
I lived in Gwinnett county and had a house as a single man my water bill averaged $13-$15 a month. Not every county is run like trash. Even when I had a water leak in a pipe I showed them and they reimbursed my repairs for the month it was high from leak.

The city controls the water meter. They can change and charge it whatever they want. Just like mine. Our water meter is controlled by the city. They never come to our place to check it. They just keep sending bill to us and charging whatever they feel like.
Sounds like they Board of Atlanta Watershed needs to be replaced. How is it they acknowledge some of the same things the property owners says but wants to also disqualify plumbers and make up these excuses.
City told her, "fight us." She did. She shouldn't have had to. Ive seen another case like this in Atlanta and there wasn't even a house on the lot. The corruption is rampant in ATL.
Somebody needs to investigate the city for even thinking this was okay to do they're just not doing any work at all they're letting the system all I had to do was look at it for a second and they would have realized they have a problem with their employees that's for sure

Judge Richardson pretty much is a sane judge.
But it should not come to that. We need to fight back against government fraud!

Shame on the city for even attempting this.
