This is 2 weeks after recording the Smart Sessions in Madison with Butch. Nevermind in its embryonic stage pre-Dave Grohl. They were nearing the cusp of so much change and so much success right here.
i mean this was before every one like him no one recognized him in public. he had a normal life. not just courtney he also had fame that he didnt like aswell
@@DG20-04 also it was pre-heroin, he didn't start shooting heroin until later in 1990, definitely started to change as a person as his addictions got worse and worse
I love when Kurt breaks out the smokes, Krist and Chad both perk up and tunnel in on the pack like dogs at the food bowl. Starving artists caught on film. This is actually a great interview, despite the interviewer, and one that I'd not seen before, somehow.

This just another example of the fact that these guys were funny as hell. Always a funny remark and some wise crack if they get a stupid question. They also show that they are smart and known how the world is put together. I really identify with what they say about small town mentality as I grew up in a shithole like Aberdeen myself. Man I wish I could have knows they were gonna be around for such a short period. I would call them up and pay to be their roadie, or just follow them around the world. That is my dream.
Ps. So funny to see people who smoke. I smoked for 16 years before I quit and back them most of my friends did smoke. It was so common, and now it's so rare.
Something about the way you’ve said this is very impactful. I’m now the same age as he is in this interview. I don’t have the words for the odd feeling
Awesome interview from that years, they talking about old songs,Jason Everman, Jack Endino ,Butch Vig and even they make jokes of mainstream rock, and paradoxically is what they became MUCHAS GRACIAS ❤️
15:19, "yea chad, your the next to go" 😂. Poor chad got booted. Also, crazy how different Kurt is in later interviews. He is so young and lively here. Media and fame really drained the f outta him (one baby to another says...)
I dont understand this comment. Overall, he's exactly the same in later interviews. The subject matter is usually quite different, but he's the same. He's in a good mood here. There are interviews where he's in a good mood in '91, '92, '93 and even the very last (Naardwar), he's in as good a mood as you can be while being abused by Naardwar
i love how they talk about falling in love with each others fathers in this interview and the other one on the same day. it must be one of those things if you repeat it enough you believe it.
Wow what a fascinating interview! Interesting to see Chad in a interview and their dynamics. He talks a little more than Dave. So interesting given it's before everything exploded and they'd only just started working with Butch. Also it's the only time I've ever heard Kurt refer to grunge as a description rather than as a mocking expression in an interview I think?
It is so lovely to see Kurt so stable and fun here. It kinda makes me mad at him for ever putting a needle in his arm. Here he is clean, happy, has direction, is achieving goals and living his dream. Why couldn't that have been enough?
Have you ever had morphine pills or such after a surgery or something ? You are definately "stable". You don't see pink elephants. I've never tried LSD but i don't think you see pink elephants then either. What is this shit about "stable" ? Oh - you are a stable moron. And there's NOTHING you can do about it ! Sorry..... Genes, huh ? Now THAT'S stable for ya ! HAHAHAHAHAAHAAAAA
You notice that they're a lot more sincere in their early interviews. After Nevermind, they deliberately appeared more apathetic because they didn't want to be seen as sellouts
Nice (Kurt) shout out to Hardcore Punk legends D.O.A. ! (later they played 2 shows with them in 1988, so i'm sure he made his $12 back to re-buy those albums he sold to see them live in 1987) @7:20
Kurt, we all miss you.
For all I know he wanted to be successful with his music (which doesn't necessarily mean becoming mainstream) but ended up getting way more than he ever wished for. Kurt had internal conflicts because he felt like a sellout and, well fame is a bitch, imagine not being able to go anywhere without everyone recognizing you and treating you differently. It's just one of those things you only understand that has a really bad side once you get it..
I wish I could go back in time to warn Kurt of Courtney and his/ their success. Its nice to see Kurt in a good mood here, he seems chilled out. Chad i feel was a better drummer than Dave. Both are brilliant, really, it's just i like Chad's drumming better. Bleach is a brilliant album, my second, first is in utero.. that's a masterpiece as far as im concerned. Incesticide has great songs on that record too. 👍🏻🎸
It's sad to see Kurt openly showing so much contempt for Chad here. Which by the way is the smoking gun death nail of any human relationship. It's kind of rare to see this kind of behavior in a video, the ugly side of human behavior that people usually like to hide, but it makes a perfect example of the point above. It would have been good for Chad to have walked away from the band himself and not tolerated this behavior but who can blame him? They're all so young at the time anyway. In bands, these sorts of dynamics are not uncommon. My feeling is Kurt behaving that way to Chad there was probably a lot of Kurt's insecurities and other emotional issues at the time being wrongly misguided towards chad. I doubt it was simply that Chad's drumming wasn't up to par or whatever they may say. I think Kurt was lashing out at Chad for other reasons that had little to do with Chad and more about Kurt himself.
An actual lucid and intelligent comment on UA-cam? Wow this is rare. But, yeah. i perceived the same things you did. The whole "You're the next to go" line honestly shocked me as an empathetic person. The only way I could rationalize it in my head (As a biased Nirvana fan) is that Kurt and Krist were extremely aware of the conversational dynamic at play and how Chad would often "Contradict" them, maybe they were looking for someone who could assimilate into the group a little better. However, I don't see any of the emotional issues that you are apparently seeing, Kurt seems relatively stable at that moment in time, it was before both his addiction and stardom. What really got me about what Kurt said is that he seemed to have known the leverage and power he held, he also says things such as "it's hip to be environmentalist now isn't it?" and "I learn everything i know on MTV" (The latter probably being in jest.) Which also brings into question the genuineness of a lot of Kurt's positions, almost hinting that it's purely performative. This interview, in the anthology of Nirvana interviews is certainly unique and the most insightful. I wonder what Krist and Chad thought when they first saw this.
I disagree. They are just sparring. And to be fair, when Chad was booted, Kurt and Krist had NO IDEA what was about to happen to them. Dave played on Nevermind. So even though they replaced Chad, at the time, there was always the chance that Chad could have auditioned with and ended up in a bigger band. I mean Jason ended up in Soundgarden.
Godd so extra🙄 , and for what? This was nothing about insecurity or whatever, they were clearly joking around, this wasn’t “lashing out” at chad or an ugly side of kurt lol just say you want anything to twist the narrative of it and project your insecurities into kurt

before the heroin i believe, that started in 91, before the big fame, how he wanted to be. You can see how healthy and happy he looks
Nah, he was consuming heroin - maybe not shooting it, but definitely “doing” it - from 1987. He became a full-fledged addict in the early 90s though.
Yes, so sad, fu...drugs😢
He did heroin way before then hence the album named BLEACH
I see a sad person here. Bored already and hadn't done shit.
pretty sure he first tried it in the late 80s -- is mentioned in one of his letters from that journals book
