@@funkydankspliff It would be great to have him on there , they would be blown away by all the knowledge he has on board set up's and truck designs.. And he rips hard on the board..
Wear them out for a while breaks then in nice. Taking them out to buggy clubs dancing is also the best to break them in, plus you feel great in a new pair of shoes 😁
Yup, now I’m a little older and I started wearing my half cabs to festivals and theme parks and after a couple of months I started skating them and man let me tell you they feel like gloves.
i remember the wave of vulc shoes that every company started doing around 2007-8, got hard to find decent cupsoles, i would always roll my ankle's in vulc shoe's due to the sharper edges and extra grip feel, you could say i'm a Anti-vulcanizer
I do love joslins marana shoes. They fit my foot shape perfectly. They last for a lot longer than any other shoe I've tried. I suppose they do take a bit of time to break in but they still skate well for me fresh outs the box. Vans and some others creat a weird pressure point in my foot when breaking in that causes real pain and makes it difficult to skate and not get hurt compensating for the weird foot pain. Just my two cents on my experience. Love your informative vids
Yeah those are crazy nice. They lasted me months. And I can still skate them now. Definitely one of my top favourites, especially in terms of durability.
I've been on a steady streak of Joslins and Maranas for about 3 years now, absolutely love them. They do have a little less board feel than Vans, but nothing you don't get used to. They do wear down eventually like any other skate shoe, but I've been impressed with the durability.
I loved the early 2000's Accels. The current OG ones aren't the same and feel excessively bulky for the sake of nostalgia. Currently skating some Joslins after seeing a lot of positive recommendations. The break-in period and boardfeel were much better than I expected.
Born in the early 00s so I don't know how they felt, but I wear the current OGs with some thick ass inserts in them. They're the only shoes that can fit my inserts and also keep my knees and feet from hurting from walking in them.
I have OG Accels and they aren't even nearly as bulky as they were back in the day. All of the reissue shoes by Es have been, quite frankly, garbage. They fall apart if you just look at them.
I rode some Duffs back in the old days and they helped me progress faster than other shoes. Didn’t think about it at the time but makes sense. I bought a pair of Adio after my duffs and almost lost all my tricks.
@@deadredeyes the Quattro currently out is amazing, in my opinion, but the Accels, Schemes, and Spartans all have been complete misses. That sole they used on all the reissues and the Silo is just weird. Silo SC and Quattro are the ones to get from Es right now. The Evant skates well, too, but you just gotta look past the weird parts of the sole (unless you like it) and then they're amazing
You and chad caruso are probably the best skateboard content youtubers. Always quality content and straight to the point. Never waisting my time. An you aren’t just using your channel as a marketing gimmick.
Favorite cup sole - Nike SB Dunk. Favorite vulcanized - Adidas Busenitz Vulc. Also really loving the original Vans Kyle Walker pro model which is a hybrid of both.
I like the busenitz original with the cupsole. Although it takes some while to get used to how point the toes caps are😂 dunks take a while to break in but the cool factor is 👌🏾
Used to love vulcanized soles but as I've gotten older I definitely prefer the support of a cupsoles nowadays. I recommend the new lakai telfords. Love the flick, ankle support and overall classic look
I felt the Telford sole is too thin :/ I have the Sabbath ones and even with a thicker inse in them, they feel too mushy brand new. :/ The XLK sole on the Atlantic and Proto would be a great idea for Lakai to try on the Telford I'm spoiled with Marana and Joslin models though.
I feel you. I did have to swap out the insoles for some FP elite orthotics. It'd be great to see a high top XLK shoe come out. Glad your liking your Etnies though 😁 I loved my Marana mids. If they had tongue centering straps they'd probably be all I skated haha
my new balance 306’s are one of the best skate shoes i’ve ever had until i they were on their way out. the dainty kickflips after they’ve been well worn resonated with me. overall amazing shoe, when they first came out of the box and i got used to them they were just flicking the board so easily and now i really need to use a lot of effort to make it work because of how worn they are. lasted over a month and i progressed a lot because of how long i had them
I've been skating hi top cons for about a year now and they're the best. Super easy to break in, great board feel, and the rubber toe cap helps them last!
The older I get the less "feel" the better. I get more tired with less absorbant shoes. I used to think it was the size of the wheels but I was wrong. It's DEFINITELY the sole of the shoe. Lately I've been skating a standard pair of Air Force Ones and I feel like I'm a teenager again. I'm not getting super tech with these but I last WAAAAY longer compared to shoes with less impact.
I am skating airforce 1s now for about a year and dude they work really well and hold up really well. It is the most secret skate shoe i dont know why more people dont wear them.
@@michaelbalas3024 for me, no. Waffle vulc soles have better grip for transition. Cupsoles have better impact protection and better flick in my opinion.
@@michaelbalas3024 awful flick with cupsole? That's pretty rare. You get consistent, good flick with them. Vulcs give great flick, but not consistent. I'm cupsole in the streets and parks, personally. Good middle ground cupsoles exist that can do well in both areas.
@@kmrskates I'm trying Nikes new cupsole - Force 58. They're not too bad. Could use improvement in some areas. Def think I need to find another cupsole like the Tyshawn’s
So far ive tried both joslin 1 and joslin 2, break in period was like 10 minutes of flat, after that i was very confident with them down stairs, they break in fast and last a long while
The lakai Atlantic is my favorite shoe of all time. It is the perfect balance of cupsole beefiness but it never feels too bulky. And Vincent Alvarez is the man.
So grateful for your review have been talking about this with my friend now only i understand after watching your video. Been skating vans the whole time as i prefer having wider sole compared to most other brands which has a slimer profile that tends to be uncomfortable when u skate for a longer period of time.
For me, I've always leaned toward cupsoles that are fat up top and slim down towards the bottoms. The DVS comanche 2.0s are the closest I've seen to perfection for me plus you can find crazy deals on them
For me which one I prefer is really dependent on the shoe. I mostly use Vulc but I’ve had a few pairs of cupsoles that I really liked. The adidas city cup was one of my favorite shoes I’ve ever skated. I skated them for a whole summer until I ripped the toe, and that summer I progressed more than I ever had up until that point, that was when I really started to get comfortable and feel confident on my board and I attribute a lot of that to those shoes. I was a big fan of them
Those Westgates are the best cupsole shoe I’ve ever worn. Close second is the first Brian Sumner Adio (deep cut there). Best ever vulc was the Vans TNT 2 or 3, can’t quite remember which
@@ninmoron3150 Pretty good. I’m probably not the best judge tbf because I’m 34 and skate like once a month at this point. But the sole has held up well and the suede seems to be pretty durable as well, especially with the 1 piece toe
@@ninmoron3150 I have the Westgate 508s and just got some 440s as well. I haven't skated either yet. They look too rad to ruin yet. I think the 440s would hold up better. The 508s are extremely comfortable. The 440s are stiffer. There is more rubber on the sides of the cup sole on the 440s. It's pretty minimal on the 508s. Someone else mentioned that the heel is lose on the 508s. Compared to the 440s, I think this is true. The 440s seem to lock in your heels more. The 508s seem to have more board feel in the sole. I think they are thinner. The 508s have a single piece of rubber for the sole. The 440s have two. The 440s seem like they are pretty darn durable. It seems like they would take more breaking in. The 508s seem like they wouldn't require much break in at all. Also, the 440s sole seems to stick out more on the sides. I think maybe it's that way to prevent rolling your ankle, or maybe it's just the fact that the rubber on the side is beefier. They seem pretty damn durable to me. The ones I have are the black ones with the gum sole with suede. There are others that have more leather. Same thing for the 508s. I'm thinking the leather ones would probably hold up better. The rubber sole on the 440s seems pretty tough too. This is just my impression. Your mileage may vary. I haven't skated either of them yet. Overall, I think the 440s would hold up better.
Cupsoles all the way! I like the look and idea of vulcs, but I'd rather go for durability and support, because the boardfeel and flex comes fairly quickly in most modern cupsoles. Marana, Joslin (1 & 2), NB# 1010, Silo SC, Quattro, Evant, and Dunks are my primary cupsole recommendations!
Hi Ben. I’m skating vulcanised Adidas super suede and I like that they have quite good impact protection. I also LOVE how they are the same shape as my feet so I don’t slide around the insole. Good video. Have a good day, man
By far my favorite shoes are the vans wafflecup shoes (gilbert crockett pro’s, kyle walker pro’s, and the “new” vans wayvee) They’re the only shoe I’ve ever found that has cupsole in the heel and vulc in the toe. You still get amazing board feel and flick but you don’t get instant heel bruise jumping off anything bigger than a 3 stair. I highly recommend everyone try them. The gilbert crocketts are a bit slimmer and the kyle walker/ wayvees are a bit beefier. So there’s still options depending on what you like better🙏🏼 best shoes ever!
Absolutely loved the DC Infinite S (vulcanized). Just so well-built and at least for my feet extremely comfy with great board feel - really an awesome and everlasting allrounder
@@kenshiroFNS Ok nice :D I only tried the suede ones but I think the canvas version will definitely benefit from the high rubber protection as well - and besides be way nicer for summer. Nice choice :)
Wow never even knew there was a difference 😄 Hell we used to wear worn out converse chucks back in the early 90s, talk about hurting feet primo 🤣 then I moved on to skating traditional 90s cup sole airwalks, etnies and emericas mostly. Sometimes DC. Really whatever was on sale. Think even a brand called Simple
Well the best skating I did was with a Prod 9 Elite, the Tiago S (+ extra insoles) from DC and the Suciu II ADV. I like not feeling that much impact, even when I skate flat.
after my accels im gonna get some tiago s's of of ebay since his on nb nowadays (so sad hoping that he will come back to DC) any thing you can tell me about them?
My Crockett's 2 have vulc/cup (wafflecup). One of my favorite shoes. They've lasted me awhile. And I've only skated 2 pairs in the past 2 years. But then again I skate transition more than flat nowadays.
That switch heel line was perfect. I like cupsoles more than vulcs, vulcs are good for skating the park though. I really feel like its easier to switch to cupsole from vulc than vice versa though, tere's something about the extra support that you get used to. I'm on my eigth pair of Elijah Berle's which is a cupsole with no insole. I switch to the NB Jamie Foy's if I wanna skate a rail or transition with a little extra confidence and boardfeel.
My favourite is the emerica romero laced. A cupsole that breaks in super fast and fits my feet very well. Since I have wide feet a lot shoes painfull for me.
Another awesome video! You're so right about a cup sole making a board feel older!!! I just got my favorite Romero laced and the first session was fun but my board felt 2 weeks older hahaha. Cheers Ben.
Biggest most reinforced cup soles I can find with nice thick soles and some airbag heels 👌🏻 I've never personally understood the "board feel" argument in recent years to justify these thinner shoes.. when I grew up we all had ultra thin boards and cinderblocks on our feet, often times stuffed with the cut up padding from old shoes to make them even bigger! Different strokes for different folks, but if I'm spending $100 on a pair I want it to last longer than a week and protect me from board impacts and heel bruises
True, Maranas and Joslins are my favorite. I have tried em all, and still switch it up. Maranas/Joslin's or any cupsole built similarly, firm and with a thicc double layer of suede is the way to go for me
I just got my first pair of vulc shoes. I went with the NB Numerics 379’s and I’m stoked on them. I’ve always been a cupsole boy, but these NBs have me hyped on them. I definitely need to get some orthotic insoles though
The fallen troopers are my number 1 currently. They are so damn tough, absolute workhorse of a shoe. I skate bowls so lots of running out. These shoes protect my toes really well.
Favourite/best vulcanized skate shoe: Vans Rowley (the one with the puffy tongue) Favourite cupsole skate shoe: Difficult to say, maybe the eS Accel or Quattro. I prefer cupsoles overall. Durability, support, impact protection, more style, tech, and colour options.
Hey Ben, one of my favorite cupsole shoes is the new balance 440 hi. Pretty good boardfeel and thick enough where if you primo on the arch or heel you’re gonna be fine. Forefront is a lil thin but throw in a thin pair of FP insole it’s solid.
@@getbuckgetbuck I have the white and green leather ones. Holding up pretty good after a couple weeks. Been doing a lot of heel flips and the mesh on the sides aren’t blown out just a lil frayed
The Joslin Vulc is a great one. I have been riding this model for the last 6 months. Excellent board feel and durable. Not as durable as the Marana, but still above average for vulcanized shoes.
I've probably skated 5 pairs of reebok Club C's and some other reeboks that I really like for cupsole shoes. For vulc I like converse w/ some nicer insoles (wear down really nice and the rubber toe lasts forever)
New Balance 440H are my current favorite cupsole. Little to no break-in period, great board feel, great flick, breathable, very lightweight, comfortable, and supportive.
Not necessarily a skate shoe but I really love the Adidas sambas. The design works really well for me. I have a heavy preference toward cupsoles and the more "soccer" shoe design.
I've been using those too. A big advantage is you can find them on sale on Amazon for $39 from time to time. Almost half the price of most of the skate shoes I've seen. The upper part of the shoes is pretty durable. It would be nice if there was a bit more rubber on the side, though that hasn't really been an issue for me so far. The weak point is the pattern on the soles (I don't like the circular suction cups, the tread in the back wears out in the heel from walking also). I've been wearing through them near my big toe. Next pair I start, I want to fill in the cracks in the treads with shoe goo. If you look at Adidas skate shoes you can see that a lot of them are just modified soccer shoes that they had previously. Also, the good thing about Sambas is that they have been around for decades and they don't get phased out like other shoes. If the rubber on the soles was filled in a little more, I think those shoes would be virtually indestructible. Certainly, for non-skate use.
I can’t ride vulc. At over 30 years old, they just don’t protect my feet enough. I have been riding the Joslin’s 1 for 3 pairs now and I absolutely love them! I just also tried the NB 508 too and while I really like the shoes, they don’t protect your feet that much from impact. Back to Joslins after I’m done with the 508
Dude thanks for sharing! 32 here and my old school pros just didn't protect my feet enough and brusied heels suck. Went with etnies Marana and am much happier. I'll give the Joslins a look.
I've skated a lot of the NB numerics and the the Westgate's felt like the least padded by far. The Foy's feel good on my 36 year old feet if you want something kind of like a more padded 508.
Best shoes for me is the DC Kalis (the new one with cupsole) and my favorite and only vulc that i love enough to buy was the New Balance Jami Foy 306. The DC have just enough protection and board feel and tough too. The 306 have really good board feel and they skate amazing out of the box but have less protection for my foot but i will have another one for sure! New Balance are surprisingly tough too!
The Mephisto Ludo are great too, they have super high quality leathers and are hand made in Europe. They have a natural rubber sole but some kind of vulcanization process where it allows them to resole your shoe when you need to. You just send them the shoe and they put a new sole on it. Also, they have an air-soft technology cushioning system in the heal and Air-relax.
the new balance numeric 212 has been my go to, the upper usually lastslonger than the bottom of the sole, and I often see them on sale for around 30 - 45, si I just buy them in bulk (2 - 3 pairs) when I see those sales. highly reccomend for a low profile, stylish, and relatively durable skate shoe for great board feel.
I can't recommend the eS' Accel Slims enough. Cupsole, a little on the thinner side, but with the STI insoles they come with, they really don't hurt on hard lands or primos.
Here's some insight; I'm 45 and will only wear hightop cupsoles to skate in. There is no better feeling than wearing slip on vulcs on a skateboard but I just can't do it anymore. 2 years ago my feet ached every day, I skate roughly 2-3 times a week, since wearing cupsoles only, my feet don't ache like they did. I also rolled my ankle about a year and a half ago, hightops took care of that, too. So, ride vulcs while your feet can take it, then get cupsoles when you get old. Or, wear vulcs to cruise in and cupsoles when you're gonna get buck...or just plan on running out of a something repeatedly. Nice video, the cupsole vs vulc never gets old.
Favorite show I ever skated was the Rowley XLT. They shredded up fast but everything felt good on them. I'm still stuck on bigger cupsoles so Accel OGs for me now.
Just picked up a pair of new balance foys. I’m pretty sure they are vulcanized. Best shoes I’ve had in a while. Like you said, really great board feel and barely any break in period. They cost a pretty penny but I’d buy them again for sure!
ive spent 6 months skating the NB 305 and spend most of the time doing heelflips and ollies and ive yet to put any holes thru the last layer of suede. love what NB is doing
have you ever tried the vans Kyle Walker? It's like a cupsole in the heel side but a vulcanized on the toe. Right now I'm skating the 2s and I'm loving them, but I heard a lot of people complain about the strap, so since classic old skools hurt your feet, meybe try the Kwals 1. Nice videos keep them coming
I'm the guy that can't ride without board feel. This is the most important thing in skateboarding for me. I've rolled ankles many, many times. Also what you're saying, that old grip + cupsole is a nightmare. I'm changing fabric soles to cheap orthopedic for better board feel and cushion:)
I have skated Shane’s and they are too good, so flexible and sticky, they feel great but once they are old, are so tiny and primos hurt a lot. I think cup soles have less board feel and grip, but they last longer. In my personal opinion, I’m down for vulcanized
Correction: They don't glue the tape on vulcanized shoes, they bake it on. That's what vulcanizing is, baking! No glue. Cupsoles are made with a "cold cement" process. Cold because they are not cooked, they use contact cement to glue the sole on.
My favourite skate shoes are always my previous shoe (as I got used to them) - just really don't like getting used to new shoes. Definitely like how long cupsole shoes seem to last, like the feel of vulcanized more, but they only seem to last me 3-4 weeks max.
Thanks for the video, helpful. I'll probably get a pair of those Newbalance shoes, as I get older I value a more comfortable shoe but I don't like it when they feel too bulky or heavy.
I really liked the Nike Koston 3 Hyperfeel. Quite expensive but great feel. Unfortunately they're unavailable now... A couple of months ago I bought several pairsin eBay, when I foresaw they were disappearing, so I still have my own personal stock....
so comfortable! both the 913 and 508 are equally as comfortable imo. 913s come up a lil higher so has more ankle support but other than that, they're both pretty dope.
There are some 440s like that. All white. I just ordered some of the "skate shop day" ones which are all white with gum sole. There's another pair out now that are all white as well, but, the side of the sole is white as well. I liked the look of the ones that were all gum colored on the sole.
Awsome video. That's exactly the same thing I noticed on heels w- the cup. My faverite vulc was probably blazers and Chuck taylors, then for cups, probably dunk or af1. I don't mind nollie heel in vulc slip ons even, but almost avoid heels unless I'm wearing cupsoles. You pretty much nailed it on this one
I recently picked back up skateboarding again after a 15+ year hiatus, a few days ago, that the ripe old age of 40. Currently I've been just using my daily work boots as skate shoes. The problem with work boots is that they grip the board too much, but I do like the support that a work boot gives me.
I've started skating a pair of Marana's, I've only ever skated Vans and Nike Blazers before now and I go through them. in no time at all. I guess I skate a lot but as much as I love the board feel of Vans and the look of the shoes (Half Cab and Classics all the way) I just can't be buying shoes as often as I have, it's both expensive and ecologically terrible, I do try to always patch up shoes with shoe goo so I can get some wear out of them even when they have holes in the soles but even so. The feel of the cup sole is indeed very different, at first I hated it, I couldn't feel my board at all, but gradually it's coming back and I'm getting used to it. Durability so far has been good, we'll see how they last longer term.
I would like to share a little experience, I started skating about three years ago or so with vulcanized shoes because there were the most inexpensive I could find new or used( $8-$25), I didn't notice my sessions will only last around 30 minutes to an hour before my feet started hurting at the heel, I just recently bought cupsole puffy shoes from world Industries ($24 with discount) and this past week I've been skating for about 3 hours a day and my feet love it! The only downside is I had to get used to the taller soul and the sturdiness of the cup Sole shoe it took me a couple of days to relearn my ollie's, nose slides and 50/50
Had a pair of reissued scams recently, they were amazing. They felt good straight away and lasted about 5 months before wearing through the sole. Van's feel awesome, but I'm always through the sole after a couple of months.
I had both, both very good shoes. Accels are like pillows around your feet, but the boardfeel is surprisingly good after breaking them in. Manchesters felt very good for the shape of my foot.
My favorite vulcanized skate shoes are mostly HUF's especially the Clive and the Galaxy (i also say that the Classic and the Hupper) and recently i've got the last Brad Cromer pro model, the reason cuz i enjoyed skating these cuz the flexibility they have (for ledges and rail tricks really sticks on your feet the first days, then you could get more consistent your flat ground tricks), the way they feel in the board (pretty smooth) and the time of break in (just need like 1 or 2 sessions to make them feel like an extension of your feet), the durability also is another great thing the galaxy lasted me 2 months and 1 week til they ripped from the outsole. Still skating the Clive just got a little wore down area in the outsole but it a little pattern even having in mind that i've been skating em for a month.. I also mention Vans shoes like the Rowan Pro's and the old skool, they really great, the only thing i dont like about em its the duration (Vans usually last like 1 month and half) but i wanna try the Saddle Sid Pro, seems pretty cool.. Wanna try also the Globe Surplus and Los Angered 2, also the new Emerica model, the Temple.. But yeah mostly HUF's but it's a sad thing that they no longer making shoes:"(
Just bought cupsoles at as a over 40 skater, it has breathed new life into my feet!!!! PS just bought a parking block, could you do a series on tricks on a parking block? Your board slide on a curb from years back was great
I'd rather skate vulcanized shoes and if I need a bit more support I'd add an insole. Cupsoles are ok but most that I skated recently had really long break in period and I did not like it. Favourite vulc shoes: lakai Newport (I don't think they're producing this model anymore and I'm super sad), Busentiz vulc, Cons 1star. Favourite cupsole shoes: Busenitz, Vans Kyle Walker 1.
Completely changed my mind since I made this comment. Now I skate only cupsoles. Lakai Telford are a favourite, also any Lakai with the XLK cupsoles (I skated the Fades, now they’re selling the Trudge with the same soles) Etnies Marana are also incredibly good. Am currently skating the Nike Ishods and even though are a bit more on the skinny side, I am really really liking them
Tried the Nikes ended up giving them to my brother straightaway cupsole no cushioning, no board feel. Switched over to Vans and have been riding them ever since Rowans being my preferred. Purchase them a half size down for length so my toe has little space forward and slightly tight width. They break in beautifully after about a week and the cushioning lasts for the duration of riding them. Complete feel of the board admittedly the flips take a little while to break in but when it does its perfect for a long time and the shoes last about 5 months without issue. Some have lasted longer but not as young as used to be.
Hey Ben, cool video - I've really gotten a lot out of my Adidas 3ST.004 cup soles. Just enough boardfeel with perfect support, impact protection, and grip. There's exposed boost foam in the back of the shoe so that might complicate your heelflips / nollie heelflips but I haven't noticed that being an issue. On the flipside, since I'm recovering from an ankle surgery, I'm trying to skate Nike SB Blazer Mids. For a vulcanized shoe they're pretty supportive underfoot and offer me a lot of ankle protection.
Atm i‘m wearing Etnies Veer. Light, kinda flexable, good grip, good boardfeel and Cupsole cause I had heel bruises with vulc before (even when I most likely skate transition). Would recommend them to everyone, they are also a bit cheaper than Maranas and less bulky 👍🏻

Woah so crazy seeing you here, and also skating on Instagram. Are you Canadian?
I learned heelflips, got a new pair of vans and immediately lost my heelflips and went insane, this video explains a lot, thanks Ben.
In the 90s, we would plan ahead by wearing our shoes in non-skating situations (like to school) for a couple of weeks before skating them. No biggie.
Yeah, who wants to immediately thrash a sweet pair of shoes either.
Wear them out for a while breaks then in nice. Taking them out to buggy clubs dancing is also the best to break them in, plus you feel great in a new pair of shoes 😁
Thats what I do up this day

Agreed on rolling the ankle situation
Yep, Globe cupsole shoes ftw all day long!!
So cupsole saves the rolling ankle because your foot is lodged inside the U shaped rubber footing right?

I love the Joslins...they feel like pillows on my 40 year old feet. Yeah maybe a bit stiff at first but protection is a priority.
I use a new pair of Marana while I skate the previous. It means that when I start skating another pair it is broken in already.

Silo SC and Quattro are the ones to get from Es right now. The Evant skates well, too, but you just gotta look past the weird parts of the sole (unless you like it) and then they're amazing
Get the accel slims

The legend of Chad Caruso. Most tenacious dude in skateboarding.
Favorite cup sole - Nike SB Dunk. Favorite vulcanized - Adidas Busenitz Vulc. Also really loving the original Vans Kyle Walker pro model which is a hybrid of both.
I like the busenitz original with the cupsole. Although it takes some while to get used to how point the toes caps are😂 dunks take a while to break in but the cool factor is 👌🏾
@@LuisGarcia-sq5mm i got the cupsole busenitz on right now 😂
Used to love vulcanized soles but as I've gotten older I definitely prefer the support of a cupsoles nowadays. I recommend the new lakai telfords. Love the flick, ankle support and overall classic look
I felt the Telford sole is too thin :/
I have the Sabbath ones and even with a thicker inse in them, they feel too mushy brand new. :/
The XLK sole on the Atlantic and Proto would be a great idea for Lakai to try on the Telford
I'm spoiled with Marana and Joslin models though.
I feel you. I did have to swap out the insoles for some FP elite orthotics. It'd be great to see a high top XLK shoe come out. Glad your liking your Etnies though 😁 I loved my Marana mids. If they had tongue centering straps they'd probably be all I skated haha
my new balance 306’s are one of the best skate shoes i’ve ever had until i they were on their way out. the dainty kickflips after they’ve been well worn resonated with me. overall amazing shoe, when they first came out of the box and i got used to them they were just flicking the board so easily and now i really need to use a lot of effort to make it work because of how worn they are. lasted over a month and i progressed a lot because of how long i had them
Mate bit random but did you also feel like they are a lil heavy?
Dang Ben, your style in skating has gotten so nice as of late!
For real. That back 180 was so steezy and his halfcab heel and halfcab flip were so clean and fully rotated.
Man is ripping
I loved the emericas leo laced, they are cup soles but it has great board feel and fast break in period
As a personal rule: vulcanized for transition and cupsole for street skating
Bruh what it’s the other way around. You get such better grip with cupsole but awful flick and vulcanized he not as good grip but a beautiful flick.
I’m with @@michaelbalas3024 vulc all day for street, get great flick
@@kmrskates I'm trying Nikes new cupsole - Force 58. They're not too bad. Could use improvement in some areas. Def think I need to find another cupsole like the Tyshawn’s

loved this video
Perfect timing to get me hyped for the skate sesh 🤙🏽
So far ive tried both joslin 1 and joslin 2, break in period was like 10 minutes of flat, after that i was very confident with them down stairs, they break in fast and last a long while
Try microwaving your shoes for 30 seconds then walking in them for 5 mins they break in asap
The lakai Atlantic is my favorite shoe of all time. It is the perfect balance of cupsole beefiness but it never feels too bulky. And Vincent Alvarez is the man.
Thanks for this. I was wondering why my new shoes made my decks feel so soggy and waterlogged. I typically skate vulcs so super helpful
Kyle Walker 2s waffle cup is amazing. Had two pair so far and by far the most comfortable I've ever skated. Great impact support and good board feel.
Best ever vulc was the Vans TNT 2 or 3, can’t quite remember which
How long do the westgates last ? They caught my eye but idk abt the durability
I love the Crockett highs. It's the perfect skate shoe for me personally
we need a flick tutorial. you have some of the most consistent flat ground ever!! so controlled, teach us!
i think the secret is just skating for 30 somethin years lol
@@frankie3351 the secret might also be getting less than 6 hours of sleep a day with 4 kids lol
He explained this before, but the key to having good flick is to develop the muscles in your leg needed for it.
Absolutely loved the DC Infinite S (vulcanized). Just so well-built and at least for my feet extremely comfy with great board feel - really an awesome and everlasting allrounder
I just bought them last night. The canvas ones which is weird. I hope they hold up
@@kenshiroFNS Ok nice :D I only tried the suede ones but I think the canvas version will definitely benefit from the high rubber protection as well - and besides be way nicer for summer.
So now you're teaching me about drywall aaaand sneakers?!!! Bravo
The fallen troopers are my number 1 currently. They are so damn tough, absolute workhorse of a shoe. I skate bowls so lots of running out. These shoes protect my toes really well.
Favourite/best vulcanized skate shoe: Vans Rowley (the one with the puffy tongue)
Favourite cupsole skate shoe: Difficult to say, maybe the eS Accel or Quattro.
Are they holding up well? I've had my eye on the 440 high for a while but never had NB and some were canvas so I was hesitant
That half cab flip with authority!!
Been wanting these are they holding up well? Some are canvas so I was hesitant
@@getbuckgetbuck I wouldn't buy the canvas ones, but with some shoe goo on the seams, they're actually holding up really well.
Fellow Canadian here
I enjoy both types of shoe, but my favourite across the board (no pun intended) is the Globe Mahalo Plus
Y’all should try out FP insoles, they are crazy on protecting your feet
I've skated a lot of the NB numerics and the the Westgate's felt like the least padded by far. The Foy's feel good on my 36 year old feet if you want something kind of like a more padded 508.
@@funkydankspliff I got some, but with the Joslin’s I don’t feel the need of wearing them.
< 33. The Rowan Pros were not bad. But have found goodness in the Tyshawn’s.
Man, this is such a good video. Thank your for actually taking the time
I love the busenitz vulc II. No break in time, great boardfeel, and they have little offset where the laces are so they don't rip.
Do they fit large for you? I usually wear 11s in shoes but the vulc 2s felt like clown shoes even a half size small
the new balance numeric 212 has been my go to, the upper usually lastslonger than the bottom of the sole, and I often see them on sale for around 30 - 45, si I just buy them in bulk (2 - 3 pairs) when I see those sales. highly reccomend for a low profile, stylish, and relatively durable skate shoe for great board feel.
I like cups for the extra padding and support. Great video as always!
Dude you were shredding ! in those cup souls , love to see it , great video dude
Favorite show I ever skated was the Rowley XLT. They shredded up fast but everything felt good on them.
I'm still stuck on bigger cupsoles so Accel OGs for me now.
Favourite cupsole these days is the Adidas Tyshawn, great shoe and last pretty well...skated 3 pairs in a row now.
You mean the Kyle walker 2s?
The strap is the only thing that stops me getting the Walker 2s
I'm the guy that can't ride without board feel. This is the most important thing in skateboarding for me. I've rolled ankles many, many times. Also what you're saying, that old grip + cupsole is a nightmare. I'm changing fabric soles to cheap orthopedic for better board feel and cushion:)
I have skated Shane’s and they are too good, so flexible and sticky, they feel great but once they are old, are so tiny and primos hurt a lot. I think cup soles have less board feel and grip, but they last longer. In my personal opinion, I’m down for vulcanized
felt like the shanes didnt last long enough, got soggy quick, recently got cupsole slips and they’re holding up great definitely recommend
Correction: They don't glue the tape on vulcanized shoes, they bake it on. That's what vulcanizing is, baking! No glue. Cupsoles are made with a "cold cement" process. Cold because they are not cooked, they use contact cement to glue the sole on.
You were mentioned in a John Hill Instagram story yesterday in his Progress Daily page. It was a skatetuber appreciation thingy
I just quit Instagram last week so I never saw it :(
@@bendegros Good to hear, dude. Nothing to frown over.
why did you quit instagram? just curious.
great video to watch on a monday morning before going off to work
My favourite skate shoes are always my previous shoe (as I got used to them) - just really don't like getting used to new shoes. Definitely like how long cupsole shoes seem to last, like the feel of vulcanized more, but they only seem to last me 3-4 weeks max.
You sound almost like Ben, who likes all his setups and likes his current setup the best no matter what it is
Thanks for the video, helpful.
Those Westgates are fly as hell. If they had a model with a non contrasting “N” (ie same color as the main shoe) and gum soles I would buy 10 pairs.
so comfortable! both the 913 and 508 are equally as comfortable imo.
Very interesting I hope indepth skateboard shoe videos become more common some day I love this!
I recently picked back up skateboarding again after a 15+ year hiatus, a few days ago, that the ripe old age of 40. Currently I've been just using my daily work boots as skate shoes. The problem with work boots is that they grip the board too much, but I do like the support that a work boot gives me.
Sounds like a recipe for a cracked board. Do they have steel shanks? That might affect board feel. LOL!
Ben degros is my favorite skate products reviewer because he gets straight to the point
Should I get Ventures, Indy’s or thunders on my 8.25 Setup?
Lakai Telford has a really good outsole. The Vincent Alvarez model wore out really fast but had great board feel and grip.
Favorite cupsole - original es accel, favorite vulcanized - lakai manchester
I had both, both very good shoes. Accels are like pillows around your feet, but the boardfeel is surprisingly good after breaking them in. Manchesters felt very good for the shape of my foot.
footprint kingfoam elite insoles are really helpfull!
far less trouble with heel bruises, even when skating stairs in vulc shoes
But yeah mostly HUF's but it's a sad thing that they no longer making shoes:"(
Just bought a pair of the 440 new balances and I’m even more excited to skate them
Me too
Did you skate yours yet? I got mine today. They seem pretty darn durable.
Just bought cupsoles at as a over 40 skater, it has breathed new life into my feet!!!!
PS just bought a parking block, could you do a series on tricks on a parking block?
Your board slide on a curb from years back was great
Ive been loving the vans berle shoes. a good cupsole is a must for me.
LOL come for shoe video and found Vancouver Carpenter. Good times.
I like the grip and board feel of the vulc but I think the cupsole will be better for me long term once I adjust to this pair.
Awesome video Ben!!! Been looking at new shoes lately and this will be a big help in my deliberations. Haha might have to get a new board too!!!
