tbf they diluted their own cred by creating sub-brands in éS and Emerica. Financially nothing wrong with that but Etnies as a brand has less of a legacy now because of the others.
YES!!! Etnies' Marana and Joslin models are slept on! They're a workhorse shoe that protects your feet, flicks well, is durable, looks understated, and is reliable!
@@foreroa I had about 6 months of use (6-8 hours a week on average) with one pair before the upper blew out (I put plenty of shoe goo and super glue since the sole wouldn't quit). The sole was heading towards smooth, but still gripped well for the most part. You could definitely get a year out of them skating regularly. If you don't do 50 + kick flip style tricks every session then they'll last a long time for sure
@@theramplocal Yes. After so long, for sure the upper was messed up sooner than that. But since the sole was doing so good I wanted to see how long it would last. So I shoe glued the upper once, and kept going to the year record.
This is by far my favorite shoe. 2 full layers on toe cap. Extra grip and tread pattern is amazing. But the heel cup is where the magic kicks in!! The collar is so padded and locks your heel in super good
In Japan Etnies are pretty popular thanks to a local UA-camr(MDAskater) who kept pushing the brand and got his own Marana colorway. I'd be interested to see what you think of the Maranas. Despite the lack of tongue straps and protective toe cap being on the exterior, they feel similar to the Joslins.
Isn't that the Joslin 1? I have been using both exclusively for many years. I think the 2 is the one with velcro straps. If I remember correctly there was an Etnies Marana Michelin x Joslin before the Joslin 1.
That is correct. Joslin debuted colorways with the Michelin sole in 2017: 3 or 4 launch colorways before getting his own pro model in 2018. Joslin 2 came in 2020 and I think it would have done better, had it launched before or after the height of the pandemic. Miss the 2s tho!
@@kmrskates Aha. They feel very similar to me, but in my experience the 2:s, at least when really worn in, are easier to put on, seem to have a little more board feel and don't have ridiculously slippery laces like at least some of the 1:s. Some of it might be just due to much more wear on my 2:s, but the outsole certainly is a little different. I would buy more of the 2:s if it weren't so hard to find them at a really good price in Europe, when they are available at all. It seems hard to find shoes that protect my (somewhat damaged) feet enough other than Marana and Joslin so I just stick with them. I might try the Barge model at some point.
Marana and all the Etnies with the Michelin sole are undoubtedly the most durable skate shoe on the market. If you wanna safe and don't mind skating a cup sole, this is the shoes for you. I walked around in mine for three months and then skated them for another 4-5 months. Easily 50 sessions. They still didn't have a hole! I just blew the heel out at some point. It's not underrated though, at least in Europe it's one of the more popular shoes.
I had a pair of the Marana in Spring 2016. Skated them 4-5x a week for three months. This was before they had the Michelin outsole. The soles started balding after a month, but the uppers lasted a solid three months. I want to say they were under $30 when I picked up a pair.
Skating in a underrated shoe to testing the leather Joslin would help out with this shoe a lot better than the other previous shoe design at the market of many durable and cheap models to customizing a different generation in a new details to adding the insoles and foot support.
I skated this same pair in black last year, hands down it is one of my favorite shoes. Love the grip on the rubber sole (especially the Michelin ones) and it lasts longer than every shoes that I skated. The flick kinda perfect right out the box and barely need to adjust or break in, except the sole feels a bit too stiff on thr first couple seshs but still no problem.
i’ve been skating etnies joslins ever since they came out. FOR ME they’re the perfect shoe. simple design, comfort and durability. personally i don’t like board feel and i like how stiff they are. but they do get broken into after a couple of hours. i love this shoe
Looks like the updated Joslin 1. So the Josl1n. The Joslin 2 had a strap on it and was more bulky. Also more expensive. They discontinued them. They kinda looked more like dunks. Really dope shoes. I should skate them again but the Madness made me buy a ton of other shoes i have to go through first..
Only been wearing maranas for the past 5 or so years; FANTASTIC skate shoes, can't shill them enough. Long wear in process but after a few weeks the flick is fantastic, super comfortable, durable, and cushioning. Ive also probably saved the lives of thousands of laces with their underlace loops.
I skated a couple of pairs and loved them. They lasted a very long time. The sole was super stiff though. I’ve since been skating Etnies and Emerica cupsole slip-ons. They’re similar in durability and impact protection ( being another SoleTech shoe ) but with the comfort of a slip-on.
Thanks for the video, Ben. Love the lines. The colorway of this shoe looks good, the off-white and green colors always work on simple shoes like stan smiths. I'm ok with the logo as long as it's small.
8:05 that tailside was nasty!! I’ve seen interviews with the owner of Etnies, he seems passionate about his product after all these years and seems like they genuinely try to make a great product. I agree about the 96 era, I noticed them going more mainstream and BMX style which really turned me off as well but back in those days I was into éS
Love my Joslin shoes, the Michelin rubber is only matched by FP’s sole. They’re very long lasting and also the insole that Etnies provides is better than most skate shoes as far as impact absorption in my opinion, although my insoles aren’t gel like yours
I skated Maranas and then ES Swifts, both very similar to the Joslin but the ES has softer Upper and Sole. Emericas G6 Cupsoles are something I want to try in my life time.
good idea about the all white leather, and all black leather would be sick too (I like the way it goes grey with the wear and tear) the problem is getting the right type of leather that does not fall apart in one session like the old DVS Tim Gavins in 96-ish. Great video, Ben. Good to see you ripping again after your injury and recovery - being old it takes forever to heal up, so getting hurt is so annoying, lol.
Congrats on 100k. You are my favorite UA-camr. My favorite thing ever is talk skateboard specs with people and what you do is right up my alley. Thanks Ben.
These Joslins have, for me, been the best skate shoe that I've owned since the Emerica MJ-1. Although they are almost a direct copy of the Marana soles I found the Marana was cutting into my Achilles due to the material used on the upper heel cup. With the Joslin the shoe has a clean design & I don't get any rub on my Achilles at all. They're super grippy & they last for ages. The comfort is great & for me isn't too much. I didnt feel that I lost much boardfeel & the comfort lasted a long time afterwards. So much so that I wear them for long distance walking as they are so comfy. I didnt notice the soles being too stiff compared to the upper. I've also noticed over the years that eS & Emerica's that I've owned have over a few years been narrowed or the sole made thinner on the same models as if they're cheapening the shoe to cut costs, but Joslins still feel the same size & quality as they always have
Haven't tried the Joslin, but the Marana Michelin has been my daily shoe for almost everything since I got a pair in Jan. I use them for skating, cycling, weightlifting, working, walking around. My brakes on my bicycle were broke for a couple weeks until I had time to get them fixed and in that time, used the Maranas to foot break and the soles are still looking new! As for skating, they're super comfortable, support impact well and have great board feel for a cupsole. The hype is real!
Thats how i feel about Emericas now. Used to skate the herman g6 Vulcs then after he left quit skating vulcs all together haha. U got a great bag of consistent tricks btw!! That last park is mini Ledge heaven kinda reminds me of New york
éS Swift 1.5 are very similar to Etnies Maranas/Joslins.. such an underrated shoe.. it's the perfect midpoint between the slim éS shoes and the bulkier ones.
Etnies is definitely underrated. Back when they were making the Marana mid(skate edition) that was all I skated. Loved everything about that shoe, except that it didn't have tongue straps. Literally a perfect skate shoe minus that. It's unfortunate they stopped producing them.. 😕
I miss those, too!! Thankfully, I snagged a few to skate in the colder months of the year once I saw them going out of production. I wonder if the new improved MC Rap Hi could be a good alternative to the Marana Mid, but minus the michelin sole
I’m pretty joslin said in an interview the joslin is essentially the Marana, but he put an extra price of suede to hide the thermal moulded toe thingy. And he added a bit more padding.
I've got the vegan joslin and i love it. The shoe is super comfortable, the sole was kind of stiff in the begining but i used them as walking shoes first and they broke in great and the micheline rubber is one ofe the longest lasting, the vegan suede holds super strong and compared to the marana this hold my ankle way better. I was not a fan of the brand because of the early 2000s vibes i got from back then, it was like the skate jock brand, but now they have some cool riders and most of all i love the fact that they (and sole tech in general) always drop some quality vegan options. And i forgot to say that you look great in them, it is quite obvious that the shoes and the setup you ride right now make your tricks looks easy and clean, or you are just getting better and better :) Greetings!
Joslin is the only shoe that I have bought a second pair. On my experience I think the suede parts looseness prevents me of rolling my angle. I’ve found that the stiffer the upper, easier you roll your high angle area, because when you step wrong the stiff upper wont let you correct your foot position.
Etnies are very slept on. I've loved the Maranas for years because they're the greatest bang for your buck and the quality is always consistent. I'll agree with the logo, I'll go out in public sometimes and people see the logo on the shoe and say "Etnies?! They still make those?!" since it's tied to an era. Anyways, better cop a pair now before everyone buys them out because of this video haha.
I had a pair of the Michelin Marana’s and regular Marana’s a few years ago and they were some awesome shoes. Very durable upper for me. The soles just wore away quicker than I’d like, even with the Michelin tread. I’ve mainly been skating New Balance ever since.
I had a pair of the Sheckler ones. Best shoe I've ever had, should have got another pair. I hated the colors on the Sheckler shoe, black and white. But they felt amazing and lasted a good 3 and a half months. These tired ass dvs shoes were dusted on the second week with a hole in the sole on the back foot and a hole in the toe on the right. Will be sticking to the etnies from now on.
I bought the Joslin 1 Michelins when I first started skating about 4 years ago and they were one of the most comfy all around skate shoes I've tried. I ended up settling on Adidas 3ST.003s as my favorite skate shoe (now out of production) but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another pair of Joslins.
Just got my joslins after getting bored of my half cabs and skated them yesterday for the first time. I’m more of a heelflip guy so they felt really nice for the heelflips. The flick is super nice. Also TONS of impact protection when i was hitting stair sets. When i was doing my normal bag of tricks, everything felt fine and it wasn’t insanely different besides the level of cushion (which is a great change for me). Also i skated them fresh out of the box without breaking them in and they still felt great! I may make a video of how long they last for me. Hope this helps any of you guys!
i had a few of the old shoes pictured. the leather raps in red/blk/white were one of my all-time favorite skate shoes, got 2 pair on sale for around $35 each, lasted forever. i have the senix lo right now and they are very much the same shoe as the rap. also got 2 pair of screw mid vulc for $46/total, kinda remind me of an etnies take on a half cab
I got some Joslin's not long after getting back into skating a bit more and couldn't skate them. They are super comfy, loved the feel (still wear them to work most days after 3yrs) but I just had no board feel and even just ollying I had to work hard (tbf, I'm a super crap old man skater, but I love it!) I've ended up skating and loving the Etnies Score (the Berger Michelin's). They take a few sessions to settle on my small but wide-ish feet then they've been the most comfy and workable skate shoe I've had. I'm on my third pair now, and I'm patching the ollie hole on my 2nd pair like I did on the first pair, which have just become nearly unskateable after 2yrs. Love the Etnies 😍
Love the Joslins! The only thing I dislike is that in the summer I get pretty overheated in them. I like the Joslin Vulc a bit better since they're a tad thinner.
For gripyness and durability I go for vulc toacaps called the The Locs designed by Fallen. I know people hate the toe cap, but honestly you can walk the wet grass in them and have completely dry feet.
ive been saying this for years. nice to hear you say it too. by far the best cupsole ever made imo, for hardcore skating edit: I write this while currently riding nike vulcs and after 2 weeks they feel like some loose rugs wrapped around my feet, im in a vulc phase i love the initial feel, but it lasts a week and half max
Ive had my joslins for about a year and I skate probably a few times a week. They were highly recommended to me by the skateshop I go to and I dont regret buying them at all.
Original Joslin is one of the best shoes I’ve ever skated! Amazing flick, super comfy, loved the shape, super durable- Only thing I struggled with was heelflips
Literally have been saying this since they came out they are an amazing shoe for last ability and durability they have enough material where you don't even really kill your feet that bad for there price you can't go wrong!!
The Joslin Etnies are such a fantastic shoe in terms of board feel, durability and they break in so quickly. Would recommend anybody who likes a skinnier shoe to try them
Appreciate this r 10:04 eview Ben!! I really enjoy the joslin 1 and am glad they haven’t seized production on them. The Joslin 2 fazed out quickly which I’m not surprised since they wore out really quick. Thanks again for the video man!!
been skating the Joslin's with the green FP insoles for a year now which is nuts.... Only complaint is that they last so long I'm tired of my shoes and want to which them up! Otherwise they are going super strong, upper is great and tread still hasn't worn out on the bottom yet. Most durable skate shoe I've owned
Love the sesh at the end. Gonna need some new skate shoes soon and may try these although I’m not the biggest cup sole fan but I like the look of these.
I went to the time bomb distribution warehouse sale and got 10 pairs of sole tech shoes for really cheap. Two of them are joslins and they do skate really well.
Speaking of Scheckler, his shoe was surprisingly good. Give it a try. I found it perfect out the box and just got more and more "comfy pair of slippers" feeling as time went on.
Fun fact, they also have hidden lace loops! Gotta love when shoes have those. I actually want to try shecklers new shoe. Something about it looks cool to me. I think I just like when shoes have exposed foam on the sole. Speaking of underrated shoes, have you tried footprints yet? They’re some of the best shoes I’ve ever skated. If they spent the money and got a good designer, I think they could take over.
For real! And they’re such an easy addition. I kind of understand that they’re afraid lacing systems like that might not look as appealing and not sell, but Etnies is doing it right. Hidden and completely optional.
I haven’t tried the Joslin’s yet, I have a pair I just haven’t wanted to skate them because I’m so used to the Jamie Foy 306 and I don’t wanna take the time to get used to a stiff cupsole, but I have tried the Marana and that shoe was awesome and extremely durable
The Joslin (1st gen) holds up amazong for me! The second generation seems a lot worse tho. The 2nd gen one got holes in the side after about half an hour and the leather keeps on getting torn. Maybe I got a bad model - but I was pretty disappointed! Sticking with the first gen!
I have a pair of Etnies vegan michelin marana shoes and they are my favorite. Super durable and comfy. Took me quite a while to break in though, but we’ll worth it.
Yes! I saw these in the skateshop and was super impressed with the quality and the way it felt in hand. I put game changer custom orthopedics by fp and that shoe combo is hard to beat. Also the hidden toe cap helps huge w the flick. Good vid Ben you rip 🙏
Those shoes are amazing. comfortable(yes), protecting(yes), durability(yes), flick(yes). Ben I had 3 pairs of those, but I switched to the 508s, you should try them. They are like thin Joslins.
The only good thing on the Joslin is the inset laces making it very hard to rip them. The laces also sit higher than the marana (break a lace every skate). The grip of the sole is not there in my opinion on every michelin sole - just a gimmick. The shoes are too chunky. The vulc option is slimmer but you get this weird back heel cap?
Skated this shoe twice and it would have been the perfect shoe but the toecap under the suede is so hard and plastic-ky that my pinky toe would always hurt and blister with anything involving the ollie area. Such a shame because everything else was everything i would have wanted :(
I'm typing this comment before watching the video, but this is very coincidental. I recently bought a pair of es accell slims because they were on sale, had low expectations, and they ended up being great. Maybe not the longest lasting shoe, but incredible flick and board feel. Plus they're super comfortable.
@Rob Mikels I hope not. I'm on day 3 right now and yea the outsole stitching near the toe is ripped and basically gone, but the shoe feels solid as hell still. I'll report back in a week.
Etnies in general is probably the most slept on shoe brand in skateboarding despite being around since the 80's.
A lot of skate shoes hurt my feet even after breaking them in. Never had that issue with Etnies, Es, or Emericas.

@10:02 SO glad you mentioned fit, thank you!
i had a few of the old shoes pictured. the leather raps in red/blk/white were one of my all-time favorite skate shoes, got 2 pair on sale for around $35 each, lasted forever. i have the senix lo right now and they are very much the same shoe as the rap. also got 2 pair of screw mid vulc for $46/total, kinda remind me of an etnies take on a half cab
the dudes clapping was so wholesome
i just wish etnies did more shoes similar to the windrow vulc, one of the only etnies that actually looks kinda cool
The windrow cupsole fit me like a glove 😅. I got the nassim lachab model
Yes, and I have had exact those colorways for over a year now, still holding strong, sadly the same goes for the smell xD
Your knee seems to be as good as new. Are you still doing exercises to keep the pain away? If so which?
Too many to get into in a comment.
Love the Joslins! The only thing I dislike is that in the summer I get pretty overheated in them. I like the Joslin Vulc a bit better since they're a tad thinner.
Just got my Marana's yesterday, same sole as the Joslin. My first pair of Etnies and I'm stoked!
For gripyness and durability I go for vulc toacaps called the The Locs designed by Fallen. I know people hate the toe cap, but honestly you can walk the wet grass in them and have completely dry feet.
Man, back in the day I was dying to skate the Enties Artos but for the exact reasons Ben described I stuck with the other two Soletech brands
ive been saying this for years. nice to hear you say it too. by far the best cupsole ever made imo, for hardcore skating
edit: I write this while currently riding nike vulcs and after 2 weeks they feel like some loose rugs wrapped around my feet, im in a vulc phase i love the initial feel, but it lasts a week and half max
I've had 4 pair of these. Glad to see these shoes getting some love. Great video, Ben!
Ive had my joslins for about a year and I skate probably a few times a week. They were highly recommended to me by the skateshop I go to and I dont regret buying them at all.
Good looking shoe, and what an awesome skatepark too!
That park with ledges galore is the sickest park I've ever seen
skated etnies back in that same era, then eS for years, picked up these same shoes a couple years ago and was very impressed
Been skating the Joslin 1 nonstop for a few years. Favorite shoes I’ve skated in 15ish years
You’re skating really well mate. Nice to see you out exploring.
Is it me or is this the joslin 1 and not the 2
You are correct
I like joslins as well, but I just nabbed a pair of the es accel slims. I really like them so far. Cup sole with board feel.
I always wanted to skate etnies but ended up buying DVS , globes or osirus's back in the day , I still wish they would remake the the Czar OG
They re-released the Czar two years ago; keep an eye on them cos they periodically put out another colourway 👊
Hidden lace loops are so good, blowing out laces and tying up the remaining bits of lace to keep a session going is so annoying
For real! And they’re such an easy addition. I kind of understand that they’re afraid lacing systems like that might not look as appealing and not sell, but Etnies is doing it right. Hidden and completely optional.
@@ejlopez6637 definitely, the ones on the Marana have been amazing. Don't have to think about the shoes any more, they just work!
Mad love DeGros. Wear my Josl1ns all the time. The colourway your showing off is on ice right now 🎉
I have a pair of Etnies vegan michelin marana shoes and they are my favorite. Super durable and comfy. Took me quite a while to break in though, but we’ll worth it.
Ben you gotta do a review of some last resort abs. I just picked up the Chris milics and personally I think they’re phenomenal skate shoes.
Yes! I saw these in the skateshop and was super impressed with the quality and the way it felt in hand. I put game changer custom orthopedics by fp and that shoe combo is hard to beat. Also the hidden toe cap helps huge w the flick. Good vid Ben you rip 🙏
Congrats on 100k sir 🫡
Those shoes are amazing. comfortable(yes), protecting(yes), durability(yes), flick(yes).
Ben I had 3 pairs of those, but I switched to the 508s, you should try them. They are like thin Joslins.
Tempting me to try a cup sole 🤔🧐 congrats on 100k subs Ben!!!
what setup were u on? the skating looked great in the clips
I really love my Joslins, mainly for durability. I keep swapping between these and Sk8Hi Vans, if they made a Marana high top I would be all over it
Been waiting for you to review this shoe for years, recommend Trying the vulc they are not like most vulc shoes and have good foot protection
Joslin vulc have been delivered to me today,my first etnies joslins
YES IT IS. The Josl1n is amazing shoe. lasts forever and great impact protection.
Dang I've been wearing different versions of the Force 58s for like a year now- might have to try these!
Not as precise of a flick as the force 58.
Skated this shoe twice and it would have been the perfect shoe but the toecap under the suede is so hard and plastic-ky that my pinky toe would always hurt and blister with anything involving the ollie area. Such a shame because everything else was everything i would have wanted :(
Ben is now taking his tour of showing up dudes 20 years younger than him at their local park internationally. All hail!
Love the chill review, congrats on 100k on this channel as well!
I feel the michelin gum has less grip but definitely more durable I also had white leather arto saari etnies.. they were amazing
You should review the comanche DVS shoe. Would love to see you skating them
I'm typing this comment before watching the video, but this is very coincidental.
