So sad to hear the news this holiday season. One year in Boston at the end of his career and he still was exciting to watch. RIP Ricky, one of the greatest overall offensive threats in MLB history.
RIP Rickey. I met him in the press box at Oakland last year when my boyfriend at the time was in Oakland to play against the Athletics. He made sure to say hello to every single person in the room and you could just tell he was bigger than life, and yet humble and so kind. Baseball lost one of its all time legends today. Thank you Letterman for this timely memory of Rickey Henderson.
Rickey Henderson was electrifying to watch. I only remember him as an athlete, as I was a young fan at the time. It is wonderful to read all the stories today about how great he was as a person too.
One of the greatest baseball players ever. When you really think about it, the A’s moved away and now Rickey is gone. They couldn’t live without each other. He was truly born to be an Oakland Athletic. RIP Rickey ❤
Hard to believe that Rickey's gone. I may be a Cardinals fan but I can recognize a great talent in the sport. Rickey seemed so healthy, and I would have loved to see him through his 80s. RIP Rickey, you were the greatest lead off hitter to ever live.
I really can't imagine having so much of a bias for a team that I feel the need to announce what team I'm a fan of before overcoming my mental and emotional handicaps to see what the rest of the world can plainly see, especially when someone dies.
During his prime years , after breaking the stolen bases record. i remember seeing Rickey play on Spanish TV in a Caribbean League during what was supposed to be the off season. Much later at 40, I met him while he was playing on an Independant League team in New Jersey. The Newark Bears. Rickey often spoke about Rickey playing until he was 50. That guy just loved playing the game. RIP SB King. They'll never be another!
Rickey Henderson was something else, man. He kept on going until his record was basically Cal-Ripken-Junior impossible to beat -- no, I tell a lie, it's more like CY YOUNG'S WIN TOTAL impossible to beat. I do love the story about being on the Mets one year and the Mariners the next, commenting on John Olerud's helmet on the field like "Oh yeah, someone on my team last year had to do that too." "Yeah, that was ME" -- even if it wasn't a true story, and it's been disputed, it feels kind of... how do I say this, kind of like it's plausible not because he was rude or self-centered so much as just on a different plane of existence. You know? (If you do, it's amazing, _I_ don't :P .)
I was like, why does this exist in my feed (and who's Jim Rice?). By the end my tbought was "that was brilliant" and I need to wTxh more Letterman clips
Jim Rice played for the Boston Red Sox from 1974 to 1989. He and Rickey Henderson entered the Hall of Fame in 2009, which is when this episode was filmed. Rice is currently with NESN, the Red Sox network.
Hey I never knew big Jim Ed was on your show. BTW, seems UA-cam finally stopped recommending your morbid uploads to me. Did you have to contact them and ask that they stop doing that?
very cool Rice was so strong..............he would check swings and snap his bat with his wrists alone... Henderson was a freak because he batted right handed and threw lefty... extremely rare in any league let alone MLB
CURT FLOOD DID MORE FOR BASEBALL, OH HELL, ALL PLAYERS IN ALL SPORTS, THAN THESE HUYS EVER DID. I DON'T KNOW IF CURT FLOOD IS IN THE HALL OF FAME🩸, but he sure as hell belongs there!
RIP to the GOAT. If scoring is the ultimate goal in baseball, he was the best at it. He’s stealing bases in heaven.
RIP the greatest base stealer of all times
You tell Rickey didn’t write these because they weren’t in the third person.
Loved watching Rickey when I was a kid, his early days in Oakland. One of the greats. RIP
Rip Rickey…my all time favorite and it’s not even close
My dad met him in a bathroom at oakland coliseum. My dad said wussup and Rickey said wussup back
In a trough?
@@maxscameraguywhat
@@IDN459 the bathrooms at the Coliseum were troughs?
@@maxscameraguy oh, I guess so. They were washing their hands.
RIP Rickey 🙏🏻 had the chance to meet him in 1990 or 1991 in Texas at the Sheraton Hotel at the time and he was gracious to take a pic with me
Rickey! He was so, so great. He played for Seattle for a year and I always loved seeing him play in our uniform.

The greatest leadoff hitter of all time, along with the greatest base stealer of all time. Rickey was 1/1. RIP
Not many baseball fans in audience....should have gotten standing ovation....
Rickey Henderson died from pneumonia on December 20, 2025, at the age of 65.

Does Jim Rice age? His face looks the same as it did in 1975.
Leadoff hitters today are a joke. “Let’s hit 39 home runs without anybody on base”.
That’s right worldwide pants had rights too all this malarchy
