Whereas pitches walked Bonds because they were trying to avoid giving him anything to hit, pitchers actively tried NOT to walk Henderson because of his stolen base acumen, but he walked anyway. A Rickey walk involved him working the count and fouling off a bunch of pitches, he truly earned his way on base.
His whole batting stance was just absolutely built for walks. It's in the rules if that's your normal batting stance they will give you that small strike zone. The real miracle is how this man was able to hit so well in that hunched over stance lmao truly one of the GOATs for me .400 OBP in the days before anyone cared about OBP 🤣
@@derryvickery6896 This is why I question the whole concept of robot umpires. While they can call inside and outside pitches accurately because those are fixed points, high and low is variable. The only way I see that working is if the batters are forced to wear nipple rings with computer chips.

Supposedly on the Mets team bus, Rickey got in an engaging conversation with Willie Randolph and at one point said “Rickey likes you, what’s your name?” to which Randolph responded “I’m Willie Randolph, we played together in New York for several seasons.”

my all time favorite player to watch. I had every baseball card of his, would cut out his box scores and bought all his magazines. Never a dull moment watching him play!
I’m a Giants fan but, living in the Bay Area, I got to watch a ton of Ricky on the local A’s affiliate. I hated the A’s but would watch their games just to see him in his prime. His numbers, as crazy as they are, don’t even do him justice. If you didn’t get to watch prime Ricky, I’ll put it to you this way: I’ve been watching baseball for 40+ years, and the only player I have ever seen play that was more disruptive to the other team’s pitching staff and manager than Ricky was Barry Bonds. End of story. The man was an absolute menace and so distracting if he was on base that he probably added 30 points to the batting averages of the 3 players batting behind him. Barry did that for the 2 guys hitting in front of him and the 2 guys hitting behind him. The fear of walking Ricky was such that pitchers frequently preferred serving up BP in 3 ball counts rather than walk him and he could do damage with those. If he walked he had total control of the game. The pitcher probably couldn’t remember who was even at the plate most of the time. It was insane to watch. I’ve never seen anything like it since. Ricky is one of one.
And he did it without using steroids😂😂 he did a little Coke from time to time but never steroids😂😂 I lived in Oakland doing the 80s and 90s and the A's and the Raiders we're killing it Illinois times😮😮 I watch some of the players on the opposing teams just be so frustrated because there was nothing they could do to keep him from stealing bases😂 I remember that cold windy Candlestick Park😂😂
@@robroyharris7418, Nobody knows who was using steroids as steroids were in MLB all the way back in the 1970s. Certainly many players in that A’s locker room were using. Nolan Ryan was using. Kirby Puckett was using. It was everywhere so it’s pointless to try to claim that we know who was and who wasn’t. He was a great player. That’s all we know for sure. RIP Ricky.
Agreed. He had a way of getting under opponents' skin like nobody else could. Just ask Mitch Williams. In game 6 of the World Series, he very deliberately messed up Williams by timing a time out perfectly to throw off Mith's game to the point he literally stumbled off the mound - Mitch was never the same pitcher the rest of the inning setting up Molitor's base hit and Carter's home run. Rickey knew more ways to beat you in baseball than anybody.
rip to the greatest of all time. Rickey was all i looked up to as a kid, and i still think of his work ethic whenever im tired. If everyone tried to work as hard as Rickey imagine what the world would look like. Rip to my hero
I heard somebody on the radio say recently that other than Bo Jackson, Rickey Henderson in his heyday and in that particular time frame was probably the most electrifying, entertaining man to play Major League Baseball. I mean, Bo and Rickey were probably the closest things to "human highlight reels" that you find. Rickey Henderson just had this swagger about him, which is the best way that I could describe him. He would pop his collar, snatch his glove when he would make a catch, and he was absolutely nerve-wracking to pitchers when he got on base. Mitch Williams literally had to alter the way that he pitched in the 1993 World Series (throwing out of a slide-step motion, which he had never done before in his career) as a hopeful remedy to Rickey Henderson.
Along with Cal Ripken Jr's consecutive game record, I seriously think Rickey's SB records are the only other ones that will never be broken without vast changes to the game
Remember in 84 or something, Yankees stadium, the Yanks just got creamed by the Brewers and the fans gathered outside for autographs. Rickey was the only star player that sat there in the rain and signed the fan's stuff. Lost the ball in one of my moves, but I always got the memory.
Arguably the best all-around baseball player of all time, and in Rickey's world Rickey's says the best entertainer and showman to round those bases. Wow to soon, my condolences to the Henderson family, to Oakland, and the MLB you will be truly missed but never forgotten King. Rest In Paradise Rickey.
The 1993 highlights always show Joe Carters World Series winning homer for the Jays but what doesn't get talked about enough is this - Not only did the world's greatest leadoff man work Mitch Williams for a walk and get on to start the inning.... Rickey's timeout against Mitch in that at bat is probably the most impactful timeout in baseball history. Mitch Williams stumbled off the mound clumsy and disoriented from it and never fully recovered in that inning since. Add to that Rickey's constant threat to steal and distract on first base and Mitch became unraveled. Carter may have hit the home run - But without Rickey's timeout, working Mitch for a leadoff walk, and distracting him from first then I believe the home run never has a chance to even happen.
Grew up watching him play in the 90's and early 2000's and when it was all said and done I thought he belonged in a select club of player who deserves 100% of the HOF vote. Ricky is the man!
