This was super helpful dude. Thanks so much. I’m a fantasy refugee from 20 years ago who has always struggled to get the hang of AoS listbuilding. I needed a video like this to get this stuff to click in my head. Thank you!
I concur with you on heroes, I find that named heroes are just straight up better than the unnamed heroes + artifacts and traits, and our spells are terrible, especially our unlimited spell. Prison of Grief is fine for a mortarch to cast, waste away is really terrible. just garbage. I would rather have a manfiestation every time. putting a gravetide between my hero and my opponent is gonna be way more valuable than using waste away. I'm kind of sad how dire wolf focused the faction is right now. I don't really see a way around it either, I've tried using skeletons to keep enemies off objectives, but man dire wolves just do everything better.
Your video is awesome. Would you mind calling wizards with 2 spell slots/unbinds level 2 wizards instead of +2 wizards? Confusing this with cast bonuses otherwise
Lash of the Sire is insanely powerful. You get to either position your hammer closer to their targets. You can lash Torgillius to place him where he can heal more units, or you can make sure you can reach objectives.. it's by far the best of the list and very valuable. Also Waste Away to make it worse only work until end of turn :S so bad.. Prison of Grief does work until next hero phase though, which is nice.
I agree that Lash is the best option out of the three. I just can't say that its an auto-include for all lists since its still a gamble to use. Sure a small gamble, but rolling a 1 does happen. I don't want to even mention waste away anymore. My heart aches too much 🥲
Great video and interesting points. I bought a SBGL army (for cheap, assembled and primed, not painted) but have not got around to playing them yet. The army is Vhordrai, Necromancer, x10 Blood Knights, x20 Grave Guard, x20 Grave Guard, x6 Varghiest. Any suggestions on what i should change up straight away, or just give it a go as is?
I would play with what you have and see how you like the army. Depending on your experience you can add to your collection to build the list/playstyle you find most enjoyable.
Drop the car gheists and a block of graveguard and bring neferata. She can make the 10 blood knights ethereal, meaning they ignore all rend, with a base 3+ save
2 units of 3 Vargheists are solid for objective pressure and battle tactics. Grave Guard are SBGL's best unit, straight-up. Vhordrai with reinforced Blood Knights is great. Necromancer loves reinforced Grave Guard. 2 drops, 2 spells, but not much room for manifestations. Honestly looks great. Give it a try. (Still recommend keeping the Vargheists separate.)
Note: You're not getting battle tactics with a Vampire Lord you've just teleported. It's also not a consistent teleport and you don't get any movement if it fails. Fell Bats are much better for it. Vargheists are as good and stronger in combat (but more expensive than Fell Bats), while also pressuring your opponent to babysit objectives better than a Vampire Lord could, all while not adding a drop to your list.
Thank you for the Video! But I wonder because of Amulet of Screams: Why would it be only one use? If there are more casters or the enemy caster casts more than one spell, it should trigger all the time imho?
You use the effects of the amulet as a reaction to their cast. As such you can only react to one of their casts during that phase. Sure you can use the reaction again again on another turn so it’s not a once per game but it’s a big nerf from how it functioned last edition.
No. You can have only your generals regiment (making it a 1 drop) as long as you don’t take any auxiliary units and your entire army fits in that regiment. For example, taking Nagash (general) which makes up roughly 900 points of your army, the remaining points must be put into units that fit in his regiment.
I just started building my soulblights as a 1st time player. This vid was insanely helpful Thanks!

Good explanation of faction, hero's, and list, great.

Absolutely. You are correct and I didn’t even think of it. I’ll make sure the fix my wording for any future videos. Thank you for the feedback. 😀👍

finally got to watch it. what is your oppinion on sekhar? she's a lvl 2 wizard, and i absolutely love the model. who would you run her with?
Sekhar can be used in any list you have the points for. I think I would run her with a block of Grave Guard to give her the 5+ ward.
Do you need to have two regiments?
