Mate, you are sleeping on the VL. You have a teleporting, 3+ foot wizard/assassin that can easily take out enemy support pieces, recur health from said battle, then summon grave guard (with a 5+ a bonus from GHB if positioned correctly) right in the enemies back garden. On any turn you need.
Nice job on the hair! Thanks for showing how easy it can be
Do you need to have two regiments?
No. You can have only your generals regiment (making it a 1 drop) as long as you don’t take any auxiliary units and your entire army fits in that regiment. For example, taking Nagash (general) which makes up roughly 900 points of your army, the remaining points must be put into units that fit in his regiment.
What a nicce tutorial! You made my day. I was about to start magnetizing mine. Thanks!
Happy to help!
This was super helpful dude. Thanks so much. I’m a fantasy refugee from 20 years ago who has always struggled to get the hang of AoS listbuilding. I needed a video like this to get this stuff to click in my head. Thank you!
Good explanation of faction, hero's, and list, great.
thanks for this video dude! Found a local group to play with and am currently 3d printing some proxies to test out before I pull the trigger on official kits! Honestly, the Bloodknights themselves were enough to make we want to start collecting!
Excited for you to join the undead ranks! Keep in mind this video was done for 3rd edition. We are now in 4th edition. I have an updated guide if you're interested.
@@nopaintnogains948 Perfect to watch while I wait for rescaled Bloodknight Proxies!
As someone about to start up a soulblight collection, this really helped me set the correct expectations, and helped me make purchase priorities, so thank you
Thank you for the comment. Be aware that this guide is outdated as we are now in fourth edition. I still think the purchase boxes are good info but the way the army building works is different now. I have an updated guide if you’re interested.
awesome, so aparently efortless
Note: You're not getting battle tactics with a Vampire Lord you've just teleported. It's also not a consistent teleport and you don't get any movement if it fails. Fell Bats are much better for it. Vargheists are as good and stronger in combat (but more expensive than Fell Bats), while also pressuring your opponent to babysit objectives better than a Vampire Lord could, all while not adding a drop to your list.
Thank you for the Video! But I wonder because of Amulet of Screams: Why would it be only one use? If there are more casters or the enemy caster casts more than one spell, it should trigger all the time imho?
You use the effects of the amulet as a reaction to their cast. As such you can only react to one of their casts during that phase. Sure you can use the reaction again again on another turn so it’s not a once per game but it’s a big nerf from how it functioned last edition.
Great Video. Vampire Counts were my favourite army back in Warhammer Fantasy, and Soulblight Gravelords are great Hiers to them… I just can’t stand that they didn’t bring back Vlad Von Carstein 🧛🏻♂️ So, when the next video for an other Army?
Your video is awesome. Would you mind calling wizards with 2 spell slots/unbinds level 2 wizards instead of +2 wizards? Confusing this with cast bonuses otherwise
Absolutely. You are correct and I didn’t even think of it. I’ll make sure the fix my wording for any future videos. Thank you for the feedback. 😀👍
I just started building my soulblights as a 1st time player. This vid was insanely helpful Thanks!
nice
Lash of the Sire is insanely powerful. You get to either position your hammer closer to their targets. You can lash Torgillius to place him where he can heal more units, or you can make sure you can reach objectives.. it's by far the best of the list and very valuable. Also Waste Away to make it worse only work until end of turn :S so bad.. Prison of Grief does work until next hero phase though, which is nice.
I agree that Lash is the best option out of the three. I just can't say that its an auto-include for all lists since its still a gamble to use. Sure a small gamble, but rolling a 1 does happen. I don't want to even mention waste away anymore. My heart aches too much 🥲
Great video and interesting points. I bought a SBGL army (for cheap, assembled and primed, not painted) but have not got around to playing them yet. The army is Vhordrai, Necromancer, x10 Blood Knights, x20 Grave Guard, x20 Grave Guard, x6 Varghiest. Any suggestions on what i should change up straight away, or just give it a go as is?
I would play with what you have and see how you like the army. Depending on your experience you can add to your collection to build the list/playstyle you find most enjoyable.
Drop the car gheists and a block of graveguard and bring neferata. She can make the 10 blood knights ethereal, meaning they ignore all rend, with a base 3+ save
2 units of 3 Vargheists are solid for objective pressure and battle tactics. Grave Guard are SBGL's best unit, straight-up. Vhordrai with reinforced Blood Knights is great. Necromancer loves reinforced Grave Guard. 2 drops, 2 spells, but not much room for manifestations. Honestly looks great. Give it a try. (Still recommend keeping the Vargheists separate.)
I concur with you on heroes, I find that named heroes are just straight up better than the unnamed heroes + artifacts and traits, and our spells are terrible, especially our unlimited spell. Prison of Grief is fine for a mortarch to cast, waste away is really terrible. just garbage. I would rather have a manfiestation every time. putting a gravetide between my hero and my opponent is gonna be way more valuable than using waste away. I'm kind of sad how dire wolf focused the faction is right now. I don't really see a way around it either, I've tried using skeletons to keep enemies off objectives, but man dire wolves just do everything better.
finally got to watch it. what is your oppinion on sekhar? she's a lvl 2 wizard, and i absolutely love the model. who would you run her with?
Sekhar can be used in any list you have the points for. I think I would run her with a block of Grave Guard to give her the 5+ ward.
YEAH!
What are the chances of us getting an update to this great video for 4th edition? Like, pretty please
I had to take a UA-cam hobby break due to work. But things have finally settled down. Working on the 4th Ed video 😁👍

Yea, that’s a mistake on my part. Nothing wrong with being the guy who helps clarify the rules 😁 thank you for pointing it out
Ha, appreciate that :) great vid though. (Neffys -1 to hit debuff is friendly units in 12" though aswell not enemies)
Just seen this video now even tho its 2 years old, great video thank you.
Amazing advice!
Is that sticky foam tape holding it down ?
Yup.
Hi i'm having a hard time with the hunger ability of the blood Knights for example. So if they attack a unit and do some damage and then the enemy unit attacks back, do the knights heal the wounds they got from the enemy unit or do they have to attack last to heal their wounds?
For any model with The Hunger, they heal wounds after they have fought. So they would have to fight after the enemy to heal.
Just an example of a real use situation: 1. Good: Prince Vhordrai gets a spell cast at him and takes 3 wounds, then he gets charged and loses 8 wounds when that enemy activates. Then later Vhordrai attacks that squad, he deals 9 wounds, thus he will gain 6 Wounds (the cap for The Hunger) putting him back to full. 2) Bad: Vhordrai cast his spell for First Strike on his turn. Then takes 3W from spell, and gets charged. He attacks due to Fights First, dealing 9W, he will heal 3W from The Hunger (cant exceed max HP), then loses 8W on the activation. Now instead he is down 8W
Very good! Thanks!
Super cool and helpful video! Was just wondering how you come up with your lists? As a new player, I don't have anyone to bounce list ideas off of, so I might not realize a glaring weakness.
I build my competitive lists by researching current meta not only in Soulblight but other factions as well. Looking at the current GHB and tactics and building around the completion of these tactics with the most point per performance optimal units (as well as what I find fun). I am happy to look over a list you are considering and give my feedback on it.
@nopaintnogains948 Oh, thank you! I've yet to find a local community nearby, so I appreciate it. - Army Faction: Soulblight Gravelords - Army Type: Legion of Blood - Grand Strategy: Empire of Corpses - Triumph: Bloodthirsty LEADERS Neferata (410) - Spells: Waste Away Vengorian Lord (300) - General - Command Traits: Doomed Minions - Artefacts of Power: Cloak of Mists and Shadows - Spells: Flaming Weapon Vampire Lord (150) - Spells: Hoarfrost Necromancer (100) - Spells: Merciless Blizzard BATTLELINE Deathrattle Skeletons (220) - Skeleton Champion - Standard Bearer Deathrattle Skeletons (110) - Skeleton Champion - Standard Bearer Deathrattle Skeletons (110) OTHER Blood Knights (210) - Kastellan - Standard Bearer Grave Guard (160) - Seneschal - Standard Bearer - Hornblower - Great Wight Blade Blood Knights (210) - Kastellan - Standard Bearer TOTAL POINTS: 1980/2000 I bought the vanguard box alongside a skeleton box and really wanted to use blood knights because I think they're cool, lol. Instead of reinforced skeletons, I was considering 2 units of dire wolves as a screen for my blood knights, but didn't know if they would be a waste of 300 points.
@@anon_domini6603 Happy to help in any way I can. I highly recommend joining the AoS Coach Discord server. Great source of community feedback and knowledge. Regarding your list, I would personally drop the 10 Grave Guard as you normally want them in a block of 20 to really deal significant damage, at 10 I feel like the points can be better spent on a unit of Zombies or Dire Wolves. You could run the two units of Wolves with 2 base units of Skeletons or with one 20 block of Skeletons. The Wolves aren't a waste of 300 points, you want to use them to grab objectives and potentially die early so you can work towards your Grand Strategy. I would test out a few games with two list variations: 1. Make the Blood Knights a block of 10 and pair them with Nefy casting Dark Mist on them to make them a very tanky unit to remove. 2. A list with reinforced skeletons and one with two units of 10 with the wolves. Best way to know what works for you is to also play as many games as you can. That way you'll learn the units you like to play and how you like to play them. Hope this was helpful and try to get other peoples opinions too. I'm just one guy after all
@nopaintnogains948 thank you! I went ahead and made two separate lists on the AoS app following your recommendations, and I joined that discord! You help make this hobby super welcoming for newcomers. You deserve more views and subscriptions
@@anon_domini6603 Hey thanks for the super kind words. I am by no means an expert and still mess up a ton. Just love the game, Soulblight, and hobby in general. If I can provide a small fraction of help to someone I am happy.
This is the second video I’ve seen that says Black Knights impact effect, but it is not in the battle tome or errata’s that I can see - can someone please tell me what I am missing? Edit: Apparently I was sold an old battle tome?? No where seems to list editions online 😕
I was about to say that you might have picked up the second edition battle tome. I am sorry to hear that happened to you. The way their ability works is that after the charge you pick 1 enemy unit within 1" of this unit. You roll 2 dice for each model black knight model, on 5+ the target suffers 1 mortal wound. You do not need to have the entire black knight unit within 1" just at least 1 knight model
Picked up some models for the army last weekend and this has been extremely helpful!
Vengorian lord is not keyword locked sure but it has abilities that only work with units you’d only ever run in Avengorii. I’d never run a vengorian lord outside of Avengorii. Lauka Vai, the named variant, however is a very self sufficient and effective hero monster priced at the same 300 points
You bring up some good points. I agree with you that Vargheist are currently in a weird spot and definitely need to be looked at and reworked to fit a specific role. I do however feel as though the Veng Lord is a strong piece even outside of Avengorii. Monster, wizard, with rend reduction, the hunger and not keyworded is a big thing. For someone who is brand new and looking to learn the box offers a lot of pieces with different game components at a reasonable price. I find Lauka Vai to be fantastic in LoN but I would rather take the regular Vengo in any other bloodline. The beauty of this game is that we can have our opinions and still be correct since our experiences are all shaped by our local meta 😁 love the detailed comment! Keep ‘em coming!
@er4din903 A tourney list for Kastellai Dynasty uses a Vengorian Lord with Undead Blademaster and Fragment of the Keep to get the Kastellai buff when another model receives one, and then has 2 "if in engagement range of this model" auras/debuffs to lower Rend of attacks by enemies by 1, and -1 on Wound rolls against your army. His heal a monster to full is considered extraneous and he is still good enough to take in other chapters, although Kastellai is the 2nd best use Ive seen to Avengorii
My issue with the current start collecting box are the Vargheists. They’re that weird kind of in between unit that can’t decide what it’s role is. They’re too expensive for chaff / trash objective grabbing mobs, those are fell bats, and they’re not as strong / durable as a unit of blood knights would be in kastelai. All in all they just don’t have a clear role on the roster meaning that they’d be the first unit I’d cut to fit something else
mine bigger
Damn tried this techique and love it. It's extremely quick and easy, while having great result.
I'm just getting into AoS, really found myself liking soulblight. Your videos have been a Nagash send. I really like your format and info. Excited to see whats next. Kastelai?
Thanks for the comment! I’m slowly working on LoN and a video about the Regiments of Renown usable in Soulblight. Takes me a while due to work schedule to get things made, recorded, and edited but stick around. They are coming!
Thoughts on Blood Knights with this bloodline?
Blood Knights used to be a core unit when the book first launched. You would take a reinforced unit and apply Dark Mist on them making them a very difficult piece to remove. They fell out of favor with subsequent points nerfs. Their problem comes more from the fact that the current book format favors Summonable very heavily. That coupled with how expensive core LoB units are make it difficult to justify bringing Blood Knights. You can for sure try running something like: Nefy, VLoZD, Vamp Lord, Dire Wolves, Dire Wolves, Skeletons x2, Blood Knights, Blood Knights (Maybe 1 unit reinforced and have Nefy use Dark Mist again). But I can't guarantee it will perform exceptionally well. Hope this ramble made sense and helped :)
It did! Thanks for the response!@@nopaintnogains948
Hey can you make a guide on how to paint crystal like the ones from the new godzilla movie coming out. The monsters mame is shemo
I wish I had seen this video before i started my collection...I have a ton of models for age of sigmar and now realize I either will have some sitting on the shelf collecting dust or I am gonna have to purchase more models to flesh out other armies
can you suggest a list using all of the characters from cursed city, complete of radukar with the bodyguards? or is it a really bad list and shouldn't be used? btw love the video thanks for the explanation!
Thank you for checking out the video, really means a lot. It would be a fun thematic list, but I wouldn't call it competitive....It's also a tough question. I will assume you mean all the characters from the Curse City board game box for the list. I would prob use something like this: Army Faction: Soulblight Gravelords - Army Type: Vyrkos LEADER 1 x Radukar the Wolf (130) 1 x Gorslav the Gravekeeper (140) 1 x Torgillius the Chamberlain (180) 1 x Watch Captain Halgrim (100) 1 x Necromancer (100) BATTLELINE 40 x Deadwalker Zombies (150) 40 x Deadwalker Zombies (150) 30 x Deathrattle Skeletons (110) 10 x Dire Wolves (150) OTHER 2 x Kosargi Nightguard (80) 1 x Vargskyr (90) 3 x Vyrkos Blood-born (90) TOTAL POINTS: (1990/2000)
For Deathly Invocation, can you heal Wight Kings by 3 wounds each turn and can they use the ability on themselves? They are summonable after all. That would almost make the mounted ones unkillable, especially in Vyrkos with the Phylactery. 7 wounds, 3+ save, 5+ ward, heal 3 wounds every SBGL Hero phase.
Yes you can. And they can come back once slain as well.
which would be best for a weight heavy list ?
If you're looking for a wound heavy list then I would recommend Vyrkos. The low hero cost allows for a lot of room to flood the board with models.
even tho he aint the best character. Radukar the beast made me pick this army as my first ever warhammer army!! :D! Right now i got Belladamma, Vamplord,Necromancer,Radukar the beast, gorslav! 116 zombies, 20 direwolves, 1 corpsecart (magnitised the lodestone and fire to switch if i ever wanted) so i can surely build something :D i will get a chamberlain now that i seen this video :D! THANKS!!! liked and sub!
If anyone has an answer for me, my friend and I are having a debate. He insists that if I have 2 vampire lords on foot (VL), standing next to 2 units of skeletons, that I can only use Crimson Feast with 1 VL. I say each VL can use Crimson Feast in the same turn as long as they are each targeting a different unit. Thoughts?
You are correct. Each Vamp Lord can use Crimson Feast so long as they do not target the same Summonable unit. This works b/c the wording on the ability does not classify Crimson Feast as a command and as such is not subject to core rule 6.1
@@nopaintnogains948 Thanks!
Great video! Thanks for the detailed breakdown.
