tik tok did this lol. genuinely. I have chronically on tiktok friends who can't go on a 3 minute car ride without scrolling. when we arrive they keep scrolling, when someone talks to them they say "hold on let me finish this one" we have literally evolved backwards
I have a friend who I absolutely love and will always have a piece of my heart, but I can NOT understand how she’s on Tik Tok as long as she is, and it’s kinda scary seeing and knowing how much she scrolls.
I mean, Tik Tok reinforced this, hard, but YT and video games started it with the weird, constantly bright, overstimulating videos and the bright flashing effects on the screen constantly. Hell, games like candy crush are probably the most guilty. Nobody enjoys the actual gameplay of those games, but the bright flashing effects when you get something trigger dopamine, getting people addicted and willing to pay for bonuses to get more of that dopamine.
I don’t think it’s really about attention spans, at least not in the way a lot of people think I think it’s more about dopamine seeking I think it’s about accidentally teaching yourself that if you’re not enjoying something after 1 second then u know that u can very easily and very quickly find something else that u will enjoy, so why stay on this thing that u might not enjoy and that is likely 1 of the millions of things that u’ll see and forget anyway Tho lots of people would probably argue that this is attention span
1:17 Surprisingly, Goldfish actually have longer attention spans than us human, with them having an attention span of 9 seconds of attention and us having an attention span of 8 seconds.
We used to make fun of Johnny Test for the constant barrage of sound effects every second but now I see that show was either ahead of it’s time or the catalyst to all these attention span problems
You know, I’ve hated and avoided TikTok for a long time, and I can proudly say that long form content is my favourite. A video could be 15 mins, 30 mins, 1 hour, 2 hours, it doesn’t matter, I will still watch it all the way through in one sitting. I haven’t watched Titanic yet and it’s roughly 3 hours 30 minutes if I remember correctly, but that doesn’t dissuade me from watching it in the slightest. I want to watch it, and I will watch it one day, and in one sitting, all the way through, the way I like it. Long form is just the best because you can get immersed into it, and if the content is really good, then you won’t have to deal with the heartbreak of that really good content ending too quickly, because it won’t end too quickly when it’s long form. If anyone truly believes short form content is better, you genuinely are not okay. It’s annoying, boring, moves too fast, and ends too fast. You haven’t experienced real content and content immersion if you haven’t watched long form content. TL;DR, I’m not putting one on here because that’s proof you have a low attention span. Just read my dang comment, thank you.
@@Dr.Funk8864 honestly I thought he put that in the title just to get people to click the video lol I wasn’t expecting him to actually be here either
Deadass. Never installed TikTok and I've kinda just stuck to longer videos on YT, "TV" shows (even tho most TV is just streaming), movies and documentaries. It's crazy that we actually got a taste of this with Vine (which is why the Vinestar era of YT saw some of the most intense growth for those people, they generally knew how to keep a constant flow of overstimulation).

As a fan of 1-3 hour video essays/icebergs, this is unbelievable. How can I even live in the world without a long form content, playing on the background as I'm working?
I think it's more so a reading comprehension issue. People can read, they just don't understand what they're reading. Mainly because they don't devote any deeper thought and just take in the words at a surface level. Like hearing someone vs actually listening to them.
the black and white penguinz0's crossover we didn't know we needed... more seriously, i think COVID-19 really got us all in the short videos content. idk i feel like it got worse since that period and that it's something that we'll never truly recover from.

Well that's crazy cuz I do post a lot of long form content from some of the games I play some can be anywhere from 18 minutes up to 2 hours but it's crazy a retention of one fucking second is insane the shortest I've seen on my videos that I make is maybe 50 seconds
@@clobzz same and I have to say it's because of the shorts I can't even read like that no more because I can't even keep my attention on reading books now
Attention itself is an incredible research to look into. There's very subtle things that web designers do to catch the eye and keep you locked into your own screen. I'm interested in how people and especially internet users would react if someone showed off all the small techniques that keeps them using media for so long.
@avatarwarmech it's just that people aren't interested. It's like with TV. People have been on UA-cam long enough that they've seen the formula, they know the cadences and they might not know the content but it just gets dull and repetitive. They are looking for that next spark of dopamine and the videos just don't hit like they used to. Not anyone's fault really, just a natural progression of a society that looks evermore towards tech as a comforting blanket instead of a solution to bettering their lives. This is all subjective because I see some people like the long form content, as do I but I think I'm very particular about where I tune into.
Yeah my parents always told me how damaging this technology is for your brain and I never understood until now when I am an adult. I am so glad to be old enough now to have a chance to break this addiction.

Dude you got charlie thats awesome! Congrats man Also this video is so true, i feel like ive noticed even my attention span is awful because of the content i grew up with
I myself Have Autism and Adhd So I must apologies for being apart of that graph that falls off quickly But I would like to admit It’s not for every video I have sat down and engaged in lengthy multiple hour videos on documentaries, research, education of something niche. I also find a short content like TikTok being so strange to watch was it always feels malicious and predatory media to focus and jangle Keyes at peoples faces to keep engagement. But there are some shorts I watch. Which are nice smart and fun. Cleverly made and serve more than just being mindless engagement. Being entertaining. Being well made. More time in production rather than just small edits to fit the vertical aspect ratio. And on the other hand I do absolutely agree that, though not everyone (because I can only represent myself) I imagine people with ADHD, autism, ADD or any other form of neuro divergency Would get stuck in a habit of low attention and low engagement with content
Same but I'm not diagnosed neurodivergent. A well done long form video is going to get my attention without having crazy shit going on every second, and long as it fits my interests.
This, it depends. I watched a 12 hour video on The Phantom Menace once. But sometimes I click off a 20 minute video or immediately scroll to the comments. ADHD is weird sometimes
Or maybe these old youtubers are boring and are unwilling to put some self-criticism, and just blame everything but themselves. Like, imagine I just wrote a 20000 character essay on this comment and people said "I'm not going to read that", me as a doofus with no self-criticism would start chanting "OH LOW ATTENTION SPAN, OH GOLDFISH MEMORY, HOW DARE THEY NOT WASTE 6 HOURS READING WHAT I WROTE. SOCIETY SOMETHING". Like... No... These youtubers are just boring. Listen to critikals voice, he's not exciting, he's not optimistic when he speaks he just drops negativity, who would want to hear that? A cynical loser perhaps, but not normal people.

The lack of observance or open-mindedness is apparent too. Individuality is cooked
@@815cu1tb0ithe problem is that watching content online in general is what causes low attention span, sot specifically short form content. The way I had it explained to me is that getting anything immediately, without having to wait for it, makes it harder for your brain to take ANY sort of waiting. That can go to watching short form videos, to watching videos online instead of having to wait for scheduled shows. The key to having a better attention span is to cut off internet time as a whole. Every aspect of a website is meant to hold your attention, not just UA-cam Shorts, Instagram reels, or TikTok.

He will start watching a movie or TV show and leave it after a few minutes. He constantly changes songs while driving, like every 45-60 seconds. Whenever he’s on TikTok, he will scroll at lightspeed, less than a second per video. It’s all annoying to deal with.

100% agreed. I’ve been on this site for 13-14 years now and I’ve seen the meta change and whatnot but now it’s just over saturated over edited videos now. I’m old school and when I make videos I know I’m not good but I still refuse to adapt to the overly energetic personalities and over edited styled videos UA-cam pushes these days. I feel this pretty hard from both sides, honestly I'm a content creator myself. I stream, make shorts, music, all kinds of stuff. I gave up on checking Twitter analytics because no matter what I post, no matter how short or entertaining I think it is viewer retention drops off at the 1 or 2 second mark on the other side of the coin I also understand the need for stimulation. I'm one of the unfortunate many with a goldfish's short-term memory and the attention span of a wet peanut. As much as I love the advancement of technology and everything that the internet can provide there's one thing I really, really miss about yesteryear... being bored. Boredom sucked and it was kinda the worst thing ever, but it was really healthy to be bored because that's usually what would spur you to try and do something, get creative or make your fun just to have something to do. I have all these thoughts in my head about things that I want to do and things that I want to make whether it's music, games, art, whatever; I'm always constantly bombarded with stimulation to the point that I never have any time to even think about being bored. And if you look at the length of these videos some of them can be as long as 4-8 HOURS. And they still get a shit ton of views. In short I don’t think attention spans are cooked I just think short form content happens to be getting more popular too

@@asmrchivist yeah not everyone is gonna watch an 8 hour documentary, but it doesn’t mean they watched 30 seconds and gave up, otherwise those videos would have 0 views because no one is every actually watching them
Sure! You see, when a stupid alpha gets too attached to short-form content, they start to get to a point where they need constant stimulation. If there's no skibidi toilet or grimace shake transformation tiktoks in the background, more and more people are unable to function. And, basically, that's not very sigma, if you know what I mean.
As someone with diagnosed ADD, (it was my actual diagnosis back when I was diagnosed as a kid). How I feel off my medication is basically needing constant stimulation. My brain without medication doesn't actually let me focus on anything it's a nightmare. It honestly is upsetting that a lot of people are now getting so used to short-form content and overstimulation at such a young age because it will seriously impair their ability to do anything actually productive. It's just going to turn people into mindless consumers who need constant stimulation from their phones and social media more so than it already is and I think that's a scary future
There is so much to consume at any point in time, and that fact is seeping its way into my art. I see so much cool but drastically different stuff everyday that I cannot figure out who actually inspires me. I work so hard on technical skills but don’t know what I want to express with them. The majority of what I watch is long form (40+ mins), but I’m still consuming far too much for my own comfort. It’s not just the overconsumption, but also the types of content being watched. Ask the average 12 year old what they’re watching, and there’s a good chance it’s either someone screaming at the top of their lungs or eye bleeding visuals on screen at all time. We can recover if we become self aware and act on it.

This is why some of this generation needs to start reading more tbh. This is coming from a 14 year old that used to do this, I started reading last year and now I don’t need those short dopamine hits over and over. Please start doing this, especially for people my age.
While both of you raise a valid concern; I think it's important to note that there is a massive growing market for long-form content. Podcasts, audiobooks, video essays, reviews, compilations, let's plays etc. wouldn't take off otherwise. This need for hyperstimulation can also drive viewers/listeners towards long-form content; they need constant noise in the background. I'd wager there is less room for content creators that exist in the middle of this attention spectrum. You either need to make your videos 5 minutes. I find that a compiled 1 hour video will eventually perform better than the sum of its individual parts.
Most video games are sorta like a constant stream of short form content im not going to lie It has all these video games rewards that motivate you and play with your dopamine receptors This is why most of us have trouble with the outside We feel like the outside is boring but in reality its the games that made our brains haywired to these coin rewards and victory jingles But theyre not as bad as tiktoks i can say that (Sorry if i sounded a boomer here I just wanted to tell you people my thoughts)
Only 3 seconds into the video and that time stat made me fearful. I'm really scared for this generation and the many generations to come. Personally, I have been making progress in shortening the time I use TikTok and I have been doing a good job. I've been replacing TikTok time by reading manga or watching shows that my friends have been recommending me for a long time. I also have been watching daily Sam Sulek videos as well as listening to podcasts like the SPEAKEEZY to combat this brainrot, short form content. There would be days I'd slip up for sure, and I would always find myself in those bad days disgusted and lazy to do basic chores.
i used to scroll so much on youtube shorts (i refused to get tiktok no matter what) until i realized my attention span was progressively getting worse, now i don't watch shorts at all anymore, and i have deleted all social media from my phone in order not to get addicted again, i'm so glad i stopped before it was too late
For me, my attention span fluctuates based on my mood. There are times when I click off a video after 2 mins cuz I got bored, and then there are times when I'm perfectly fine with watching a 40 minute video about stuff I've never heard of. Edit: I've never used nor downloaded Tiktok by the way Edit 2: This is my first time on this channel. How tf did you get Penguinz0 on here??
This is same with me too. And this is completely normal behaviour in my opinion since stress and mental health issues cause dopamine to get lower. But it can also mean youmay have adhd or add
I had this problem a while back because I decided to download TikTok(even though I had tried to avoid it for so long.) It literally fried my brain so much that my school grades were the worst I had EVER. I constantly tried gaslighting myself into thinking TikTok wasn’t the problem and I should blame my parents. That was when my life was going downhill. I didn’t realize-or didn’t want to accept-that TikTok was the problem. Recently though, I deleted TikTok because of a virtual class I took that had mentioned things like this. That virtual class literally saved my life.
as an awakened person ive deleted everything that can fry my attention span any longer and i rarely watch youtube shorts unless i see it and it genuinly interests me ive just been watching movies, shows and ive been socializing outside and i really feel like my dopamine receptors and attention span is slowly but surely healing so theres still a change to heal
FUCK. Social media and entertainment services nowadays just have plenty content to serve, just that can make someone be kinda lost in the sauce, so when we have a new product of fast food content like that, such as tiktok, reels and youtube shorts, people just get hypnotized and lose hours of potential productivity in their day. So i think what you're doing here is a very down to earth and important talk, i think it's important to push this topic so more people can realize that they have their own free will AND RIGHTS to cut off the garbage media out of their lives + establish limits to their habits, and this is the websites's out there that have this type of product fault, you can tell they are aware of the degeneracy that all of this can cause because now instagram has added some pop-up warnings about screen time and content breaks when it gets late at night. #BRINGLONGCONTENTBACK (also shoutout to u siah luv ur videos every since the skits pookie bear)

That can go to watching short form videos, to watching videos online instead of having to wait for scheduled shows. The key to having a better attention span is to cut off internet time as a whole. Sure! You see, when a stupid alpha gets too attached to short-form content, they start to get to a point where they need constant stimulation. I had only seen a couple of your black Charlie videos before this, but I did watch them all the way through (as with this video).

But theyre not as bad as tiktoks i can say that
(Sorry if i sounded a boomer here I just wanted to tell you people my thoughts)
me in league hugging my tower for 30 minutes cuz enemy assassin will one shot me if i step out for a second
Me playing Stellaris for 3 hours straight:
U use tiktok, so, your automatically gay and have less of an opinion. It's the rules, buddy. Don't hate the player. Hate the game. Fuck it, we ball.
i used to scroll so much on youtube shorts (i refused to get tiktok no matter what) until i realized my attention span was progressively getting worse, now i don't watch shorts at all anymore, and i have deleted all social media from my phone in order not to get addicted again, i'm so glad i stopped before it was too late
i either have brain rot or i watch wendigoon 4 hour video essays
Ive been starting to watch longer videos ever since the beginning of the year. Im doing a good job at staying focused now
this is a W of a collab but that aside i’m rockin wit these commentary vids. 🔥
Siah growing so fast🥹
No tiktok no reels no shorts for a year now and it's the best thing I've ever done
Even though attention spans don't exist, this man deserves full attention
For me, my attention span fluctuates based on my mood. There are times when I click off a video after 2 mins cuz I got bored, and then there are times when I'm perfectly fine with watching a 40 minute video about stuff I've never heard of.
Edit: I've never used nor downloaded Tiktok by the way
Edit 2: This is my first time on this channel. How tf did you get Penguinz0 on here??
This is same with me too. And this is completely normal behaviour in my opinion since stress and mental health issues cause dopamine to get lower. But it can also mean youmay have adhd or add
UA-cam used to only be 5 minutes in the golden age
I had this problem a while back because I decided to download TikTok(even though I had tried to avoid it for so long.) It literally fried my brain so much that my school grades were the worst I had EVER. I constantly tried gaslighting myself into thinking TikTok wasn’t the problem and I should blame my parents. That was when my life was going downhill. I didn’t realize-or didn’t want to accept-that TikTok was the problem. Recently though, I deleted TikTok because of a virtual class I took that had mentioned things like this. That virtual class literally saved my life.
The collab I wasn’t expecting
Aye W collab but you guys are completely correct.
as an awakened person ive deleted everything that can fry my attention span any longer and i rarely watch youtube shorts unless i see it and it genuinly interests me ive just been watching movies, shows and ive been socializing outside and i really feel like my dopamine receptors and attention span is slowly but surely healing so theres still a change to heal
I forced myself to watch this all the way through
It’s so insane but so real, yet so mind blowing
love how the most replayed is the first three seconds
This appeared out of nowhere.
