      Do you have segmented clips of these (maybe UA-cam shorts)? I own Blade of the Immortal and would love to use your review of that from here for some people I want to talk into seeing it but who wouldn't sit through a whole video like this.

      I don't know if I've ever agreed with a post more in my life. One of those movies like the horror movie April fool's Day where once you've watched the movie once you can never put that back in the can you know you can never get past the holy s*** ending. And I understand it requires a whole lot of willing suspension of disbelief to really fully enjoy it but I bought in completely because Fincher's style at the time was really A+.
      So basically I just let go and enjoy it and at least on that first viewing it was one of my favorite movie going experiences of the 90s.

    Tubi is incredible; it takes work to dig through the dross, but the gems that are buried here are undeniable. The Shout Factory section in particular is a damn revelation - a ton of hard-to-find Wernor Herzog films, just sitting there for FREE.

      Can you explain the appeal to me? To me it was a long format demo for practical effects like Avatar was a long format demo for CGI. It had very little plot, and that little still had holes. It is slightly more watchable if you mute the dialog and just look at the pretty pictures. Where is the rewatch potential I'm missing?

    • @OkyDooky
      @OkyDooky 10 місяців тому +3

      It sounds like you're more interested in quality screenwriting and acting than the other aspects of cinema. That's fine, but of you're deliberately shunning those other elements to pursue "something higher," then I think you're missing out on a lot.
      If not and you genuinely don't naturally connect with what many call "spectacle," I'd recommend giving a little bit of effort to develop a personal appreciation for those elements.
      For Avatar, it's less about "the CG" and more about experiencing the wonder of an alien world and generally that sense of the fantastic that many haven't felt since they were children and heard or saw stories of something otherworldly and special that captivated them or evoke awe and something enjoyable but difficult to describe.
      Fury Road is the embodiment of a statement given by George Miller, the director (I can't remember if he was quoting someone else or not), "action is the purist syntax of cinema." Aesthetics in motion for the purpose of causing something to happen. The movie was developed using storyboards (3500~ panels) and *then* a screenplay was made for the actors to read and use. It is a visual-first movie that treats action as a legitimate art in cinema. It is one of the only action movies to win multiple Oscars (with pretty much only The Revenant preventing a clean sweep) for this reason. While screenplay and acting are important elements, cinema is not a novel or a stage play or a painting or photograph. Fury Road understands and embraces that fully, having enough of a story to give substance to what we see on screen (which, yes, definitely has holes and many decently-sized imperfections).
      A couple of examples of purely visual (well, with some music and non-studio sounds) cinema, Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka are usually concerned good picks.
      Anyway, that's the "serious" answer. The short of it is that Mad Max: Fury Road is damn impressive, has cool and gritty aesthetics, and is just a lot of fun to watch. It is filmed incredibly well and doesn't hold our hand with the world-building. I also often describe it as basically a Wagnerian opera on wheels, in the desert, with guns and explosions, and without any singing or songs. If you watch it in that way, it may make a bit more sense, viewing experience-wise. Hope that helps!

    • @1retiredknight
      @1retiredknight 10 місяців тому

      @@OkyDooky It sounds like you are looking at what technical boxes for a specific art form something checks. I've seen the same thing at car shows, and the cars that win all the categorizes except the purely subjective judges chaise award are usually usually so ugly as the be almost painful to look at.
      For actual entertainment, a terrible plot is simply too distracting to me. Its like looking at a house in the neighborhood that may be well framed but has a peeling paint-job in multiple clashing colors.
      The behind the scenes features on Fury road were more entertaining than the actual movie because they just focused on the impressive achievements of the practical effects.
      Similarly, with Avatar any wonder at the beautifully animated environment was ruined by the nonsensical and rather offensive plot.

    @Flick Connection. For you to rate Showgirls over Belly only confirms you were on Coke as much as anyone you’re talkin about with that trash a** movie. I typically agree with you but you’re off on that one. Belly could’ve had better acting. BUT, let’s ask ourselves would we rather have real street oriented playas that REALLY know about the life to play the roles, or have really great renowned actors that don’t know, or have any idea about the life playin the roles? There are some things that are better portrayed by real people about that life, than great actors that have no idea. No matter your skill in the craft, some things can’t be done well if you haven’t lived it. I’ll take the first hands down all day everyday, cause I truly come from that life, and know about that life. I can and have watched that movie numerous times. It doesn’t expire in my opinion.
    Love your work brotha.
    Keep it up. ☝🏼🤙🏼…

    The Game is one of those movies where you can still find surprises in the details, even if you've seen it before. There's also some Christian allegory in there, if you know what you're looking for.

    You know, you gave away the ending of The Game... "play along..." Hopefully those who haven't seen the movie weren't paying attention to what you were saying.

    You essentially spoiled The Game after saying the less you know, the better...but okay. I saw it before, anyway.

    I disagree that Showgirls is entertaining. It did, however, manage to do the impossible - make tits boring.
